We prove existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions to the Einstein vacuum equations taking the form $${^{(4)}g} = -dt^2 + \sum_{i,j = 1}^3 a_{ij}t^{2p_{\max\{i,j\}}}\, \mathrm{d} x^i\, \mathrm{d} x^j$$ on $(0,T]_t \times \mathbb T^3_x$, where $a_{ij}(t,x)$ and $p_i(x)$ are regular functions without symmetry or analyticity assumptions. These metrics are singular and asymptotically Kasner-like as $t\to 0^+$. These solutions are expected to be highly non-generic, and our construction can be viewed as solving a singular initial value problem with Fuchsian-type analysis where the data are posed on the "singular hypersurface" $\{ t = 0\}$. This is the first such result without imposing symmetry or analyticity.
To carry out the analysis, we study the problem in a synchronized coordinate system. In particular, we introduce a novel way to perform (weighted) energy estimates in such a coordinate system based on estimating the second fundamental forms of the constant-$t$ hypersurfaces.
We consider the wave equation, $\square_gψ=0$, in fixed flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker and Kasner spacetimes with topology $\mathbb{R}_+\times\mathbb{T}^3$. We obtain generic blow up results for solutions to the wave equation towards the Big Bang singularity in both backgrounds. In particular, we characterize open sets of initial data prescribed at a spacelike hypersurface close to the singularity, which give rise to solutions that blow up in an open set of the Big Bang hypersurface $\{t=0\}$. The initial data sets are characterized by the condition that the Neumann data should domin…
In this work we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the Einstein equations with a minimally coupled scalar field. The primary focus of the present paper here establishing under what conditions a solution becomes "asymptotically Kasner" sufficiently close to the initial singularity. To address this question we restrict our attention to Bianchi I space-times. By restricting our attention to a strictly monotonic scalar field we are able to provide necessary conditions on a potential so that the resulting solution is asymptotically Kasner. Moreover, we provide both explicit and nu…
We explore properties of path integral complexity in field theories on time dependent backgrounds using its dual description in terms of Hartle-Hawking wavefunctions. In particular, we consider boundary theories with time dependent couplings which are dual to Kasner-AdS metrics in the bulk with a time dependent dilaton. We show that holographic path integral complexity decreases as we approach the singularity, consistent with earlier results from holographic complexity conjectures. Furthermore, we find examples where the complexity becomes universal i.e., independent of the Kasner exponents, b…
We present an exact solution in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity describing a spacetime with an anisotropic Kasner-type singularity and Lifshitz asymptotics. This configuration can also be supported by a phantom scalar while still satisfying the Null Energy Condition. For certain parameters of this solution, null geodesics can have an infinitely deep effective potential, thus trapping photons in a finite region along the radial direction. Some examples of periodic null geodesics are obtained. A particularly interesting special case of this solution is a regular, soliton-type metric that retain…
We study the behavior of black hole singularities across the Hawking-Page phase transitions, uncovering possible connections between the physics inside and outside the horizon. We focus on the case of spacelike singularities in Einstein-scalar theory which are of the Kasner form. We find that the Kasner exponents are continuous and non-differentiable during the second order phase transitions, while discontinuous in the first order phase transitions. We give some arguments on the universality of this behavior. We also discuss possible observables in the dual field theory which encode the Kasner…
Exact solutions to Einstein's equations for holographic models are presented and studied. The IR geometry has a timelike cousin of the Kasner singularity, which is the less generic case of the BKL (Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz) singularity, and the UV is asymptotically AdS. This solution describes a holographic RG flow between them. The solution's appearance is an interpolation between the planar AdS black hole and the AdS soliton. The causality constraint is always satisfied. The entanglement entropy and Wilson loops are discussed. The boundary condition for the current-current correlation f…

We revise the one-pair complex poles soliton solutions on a Kasner background. In the literature, these were rejected as solutions with no cosmological interest due to singularities that supposedly show up at space-like infinity. The only accepted solutions of this kind were those with background metric parameter $d=\pm 1$. By computing the scalars $I, J$ we find that there are no scalar singularities at all, for a wide range of the background parameter $d$. This means that there are actually an enormous number of acceptable simple complex-poles solutions, besides the $d=\pm1$ cases. These sol…
We derive transition rules for Kasner exponents in bouncing Bianchi I models with generic perfect fluid matter fields for a broad class of modified gravity theories where cosmological singularities are resolved and replaced by a non-singular bounce. This is a generalization of results obtained previously in limiting curvature mimetic gravity and loop quantum cosmology. A geometric interpretation is provided for the transition rule as a linear map in the Kasner plane. We show that the general evolution of anisotropies in a Bianchi I universe -- including during the bounce phase -- is equivalent…
We use Fuchsian Reduction to construct singular solutions of Einstein's equations which belong to the class of Gowdy spacetimes. The solutions have the maximum number of arbitrary functions. Special cases correspond to polarized, or other known solutions. The method provides precise asymptotics at the singularity, which is Kasner-like. All of these solutions are asymptotically velocity-dominated. The results account for the fact that solutions with velocity parameter uniformly greater than one are not observed numerically. They also provide a justification of formal expansions proposed by Grub…

Global existence results in the past time direction of cosmological models with collisionless matter and a massless scalar field are presented. It is shown that the singularity is crushing and that the Kretschmann scalar diverges uniformly as the singularity is approached. In the case without Vlasov matter, the singularity is velocity dominated and the generalized Kasner exponents converge at each spatial point as the singularity is approached.
An idea which has been around in general relativity for more than forty years is that in the approach to a big bang singularity solutions of the Einstein equations can be approximated by the Kasner map, which describes a succession of Kasner epochs. This is already a highly non-trivial statement in the spatially homogeneous case. There the Einstein equations reduce to ordinary differential equations and it becomes a statement that the solutions of the Einstein equations can be approximated by heteroclinic chains of the corresponding dynamical system. For a long time progress on proving a state…
We study the occurrence, visibility, and curvature strength of singularities in dust-containing Szekeres spacetimes (which possess no Killing vectors) with a positive cosmological constant. We find that such singularities can be locally naked, Tipler strong, and develop from a non-zero-measure set of regular initial data. When examined along timelike geodesics, the singularity's curvature strength is found to be independent of the initial data.
We prove that certain asymptotically flat initial data sets with nontrivial topology and/or differentiable structure collapse to form singularities. The class of such initial data sets is characterized by a new smooth invariant, the maximal Yamabe invariant, defined through smooth compactification of the asymptotically flat manifold. Our singularity theorem applies to spacetimes admitting a Cauchy surface of nonpositive maximal Yamabe invariant with initial data that satisfies the dominant energy condition. This class of spacetimes includes simply connected spacetimes with a single asymptotic …
We examine the thermodynamical properties of a number of asymptotically flat, stationary (but not static) solutions having conical singularities, with both connected and non-connected event horizons, using the thermodynamical description recently proposed in arXiv:0912.3386 [gr-qc]. The examples considered are the double-Kerr solution, the black ring rotating in either S^2 or S^1 and the black Saturn, where the balance condition is not imposed for the latter two solutions. We show that not only the Bekenstein-Hawking area law is recovered from the thermodynamical description but also the therm…
In this paper, we consider conformal metrics on a unit 4-disc with an asymptotically hyperbolic end and possible isolated conic singularities. We define a mass term of the AH end. If the $σ_{2}$ curvature has lower bound $σ_{2}\geq\frac{3}{2}$, we prove a Penrose type inequality relating the mass and contributions from singularities. We also classify sharp cases, which is the standard hyperbolic 4-space $\mathbb{H}^{4}$ when no singularity occurs. It is worth noting that our curvature condition implies non-positive energy density.
The possibility that the asymptotic quasi-normal mode (QNM) frequencies can be used to obtain the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for the Schwarzschild black hole -- commonly referred to as Hod's conjecture -- has received considerable attention. To test this conjecture, using monodromy technique, attempts have been made to analytically compute the asymptotic frequencies for a large class of black hole spacetimes. In an earlier work, two of the current authors computed the high frequency QNMs for scalar perturbations of $(D+2)$ dimensional spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat, single horizon …
We analyze the semiclassical polymer dynamics of the inhomogeneous Mixmaster model by choosing the cubed scale factor as the discretized configurational variable, while the anisotropies remain pure Einsteinian variables. Such a modified theory of gravity should be regarded as the appropriate framework to describe the behavior of quantum mean values, both in polymer quantum mechanics and in Loop Quantum Cosmology. We first construct the generalized Kasner solution, including a massless scalar field and a cosmological constant in the dynamics. They account for a quasi-isotropization, inflationar…
This paper continues the investigation of the formation of naked singularities in the collapse of collisionless matter initiated in [RV]. There the existence of certain classes of non-smooth solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system was proved. Those solutions are self-similar and hence not asymptotically flat. To obtain solutions which are more physically relevant it makes sense to attempt to cut off these solutions in a suitable way so as to make them asymptotically flat. This task, which turns out to be technically challenging, will be carried out in this paper. [RV] A. D. Rendall and J. J. L…

The BKL conjecture, stated in the 60s and early 70s by Belinski, Khalatnikov and Lifshitz, proposes a detailed description of the generic asymptotic dynamics of spacetimes as they approach a spacelike singularity. It predicts complicated chaotic behaviour in the generic case, but simpler non-chaotic one in cases with symmetry assumptions or certain kinds of matter fields. Here we construct a new class of four-dimensional vacuum spacetimes containing spacelike singularities which show non-chaotic behaviour. In contrast with previous constructions, no symmetry assumptions are made. Rather, the m…
We consider the problem of collapse of a self-gravitating Higgs field, with potential bounded below by a (possibly negative) constant. The behaviour at infinity may be either asymptotically flat or asymptotically AdS. This problem has received much attention as a source for possible violations of weak cosmic censorship in string theory. In this paper, we prove under spherical symmetry that ``first singularities'' arising in the non-trapped region must necessarily emanate from the centre. In particular, this excludes the formation of a certain type of naked singularity which was recently conjec…
Solutions describing the gravitational collapse of asymptotically flat cylindrical and prolate shells of (null) dust are shown to admit globally naked singularities.
It is proved that the Riemann tensor squared is divergent as $τ\ra 0$ for a wide class of cosmological metrics with non-exceptional Kasner-like behaviour of scale factors as $τ\ra 0$, where $τ$ is synchronous time. Using this result it is shown that any non-trivial generalization of the spherically-symmetric Tangherlini solution to the case of $n$ Ricci-flat internal spaces \cite{FIM} has a divergent Riemann tensor squared as $R \ra R_0$, where $R_0$ is parameter of length of the solution. Multitemporal naked singularities are also considered.
Assuming the Bousso bound, we prove a singularity theorem: if the light rays entering a hyperentropic region contract, then at least one light ray must be incomplete. "Hyperentropic" means that the entropy of the region exceeds the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of its spatial boundary. Our theorem provides a direct link between singularities and quantum information. The hyperentropic condition replaces the noncompactness assumption in Penrose's theorem, so our theorem is applicable even in a closed universe. In an asymptotically de Sitter spacetime, for example, a big bang singularity can be diag…
Interest in cosmological singularities has remarkably grown in recent times, particularly on future singularities with the discovery of late-time acceleration of the universe and dark energy. While such explorations have previously been done in various modified gravity and quantum gravitationally inspired cosmologies (besides standard general relativistic cosmology), no such an endeavour has been taken up till now in the realms of renormalization group approaches to cosmology and we have hence took up on this journey. In this work, we consider the formation of cosmological singularities in an …
We find new static, spherically symmetric, and asymptotically flat vacuum solutions without horizon in Starobinsky's quadratic f(R) gravity. We systematically classify these solutions by an asymptotic analysis around the origin and find seven different integer Frobenius families. We numerically solve the exact equations of motion by a double-shooting method and specify boundary conditions by matching the numerical solution to the analytic solution of the linearised field equations in the weak field regime. We find that all integer Frobenius families can be connected to asymptotically flat solu…
In this paper, we derive general conditions for a shadow to occur, without a photon sphere in a spacetime, caused by central nulllike or timelike naked singularities. Using these conditions, we propose classes of spacetimes which have nulllike and timelike naked singularities at the center, and that fulfill these `shadow without photon sphere' conditions. Considering additional asymptotically flat conditions, we show that, for a fixed Schwarzschild mass, the timelike naked singularities can cast a shadow of a size that is equal to, greater or smaller, than the size of a black hole shadow. On t…
We write down the relevant field equations for a stationary axially symmetric rigidly rotating dust source in such a way that the general solution depends upon the solution of an elliptic equation and upon harmonic functions. Starting with the dipole Bonnor solution, we built an asymptotically flat solution with two curvature singularities on the rotational axis with diverging mass. Apart from the two point singularities on the axis, the metric is regular everywhere. Finally, we study a non-asymptotically flat solution with NUT charge and a massless ring singularity, but with a well-defined ma…
