We shall study minimal complex surfaces with $c^2 = 9$ and $χ=5$ whose canonical classes are divisible by $3$ in the integral cohomology groups, where $c_1^2$ and $χ$ denote the first Chern number of an algebraic surface and the Euler characteristic of the structure sheaf, respectively. The main results are a structure theorem for such surfaces, the unirationality of the moduli space, and a description of the behavior of the canonical map. As a byproduct, we shall also rule out a certain case mentioned in a paper by Ciliberto--Francia--Mendes Lopes. Since the irregularity $q$ vanishes for our surfaces, our surfaces have geometric genus $p_g = 4$.
We totally classify the projective toric varieties whose canonical divisors are divisible by their dimensions. In Appendix, we show that Reid's toric Mori theory implies Mabuchi's characterization of the projective space for toric varieties.
This work is the first part in a series of three dedicated to the foundations of integral aspects of Shimura varieties and of Fontaine's categories. It deals mostly with the unramified context of (arbitrary) mixed characteristic (0,p). Among the topics covered we mention: the generalization of the classical Serre-Tate theory of ordinary p-divisible groups and of their canonical lifts, the generalization of the classical Serre-Tate-Dwork-Katz theory of (crystalline) coordinates for ordinary abelian varieties, the strong form of the generalized Manin problem, global deformations in the generaliz…
Let R be a complete rank-1 valuation ring of mixed characteristic (0,p), and let K be its field of fractions. A g-dimensional truncated Barsotti-Tate group G of level n over R is said to have a level-n canonical subgroup if there is a K-subgroup of G\tensor_R K with geometric structure (\Z/p^n\Z)^g consisting of points "closest to zero". We give a nontrivial condition on the Hasse invariant of G that guarantees the existence of the canonical subgroup, analogous to a result of Katz and Lubin for elliptic curves. The bound is independent of the height and dimension of G.
We use E. Lau's classification of 2-divisible groups using Dieudonné displays to construct integral canonical models for Shimura varieties of abelian type at 2-adic places where the level is hyperspecial. We apply this to prove the Tate conjecture for K3 surfaces in characteristic 2.
We present the construction of canonical lifts of $\ell$-adic cycle classes of sections of $p$-adic projective anabelian curves to the cohomology of arbitrary proper, regular, flat models. This answers a question of Esnault and Wittenberg.
We express the Segre class of a monomial scheme in projective space in terms of log canonical thresholds of associated ideals. Explicit instances of the relation amount to identities involving the classical polygamma functions.
Some divisor class relations are proved and used to compute the Cartier divisor class of the virtual canonical bundle for genus 0 maps to a smooth target.
We extend the Serre-Tate theory of canonical lifts of ordinary abelian varieties to arbitrary unpolarised families of ordinary abelian varieties parameterised by a $p$-adic formal scheme $S$. We show that the canonical lift is the unique lift to $W(S)$ which admits a $δ$-structure in the sense of Joyal, Buium, and Bousfield. We prove analogous statements for families of ordinary $p$-groups and $p$-divisible groups.
This paper, first written in 1997, aims at a simplified and more elementary construction of algebraic-geometric virtual fundamental classes as defined by Li/Tian and Behrend/Fantechi. We replace the use of Artin stacks in the latter approach by a yoga of cone bundles of possible independent interest. We also observe a formula for virtual fundamental classes involving only the total Chern class of the index bundle and Fulton's canonical class of the moduli space.
We discuss the Borisov-Nuer conjecture in connection with the canonical maps from the moduli spaces $\mathcal M_{En,h}^a$of polarized Enriques surfaces with fixed polarization type $h$ to the moduli space $\mathcal F_g$ of polarized $K3$ surfaces of genus $g$ with $g=h^2+1$, and we exhibit a naturally defined locus $Σ_g\subset\mathcal F_g$. One direct consequence of the Borisov-Nuer conjecture is that $Σ_g$ would be contained in a particular Noether-Lefschetz divisor in $\mathcal F_g$, which we call the Borisov-Nuer divisor and we denote by $\mathcal{BN}_g$. In this short note, we prove that $…

In this paper, we prove a generalization of Reznikov's theorem which says that the Chern-Simons classes and in particular the Deligne Chern classes (in degrees $>1$) are torsion, of a flat bundle on a smooth complex projective variety. We consider the case of a smooth quasi--projective variety with an irreducible smooth divisor at infinity. We define the Chern-Simons classes of Deligne's canonical extension of a flat vector bundle with unipotent monodromy at infinity, which lift the Deligne Chern classes and prove that these classes are torsion.
We prove that the graded ring of modular forms of weight divisible by 3 is naturally isomorphic to a certain log canonical ring of the corresponding elliptic modular surface.
A K3-surface is a (smooth) surface which is simply connected and has trivial canonical bundle. In these notes we investigate three particular pencils of K3-surfaces with maximal Picard number. More precisely the general member in each pencil has Picard number 19 and each pencil contains four surfaces with Picard number 20. These surfaces are obtained as the minimal resolution of quotients X/G, where $G\subset SO(4,\R)$ is some finite subgroup and $X\subset ¶_3(\C)$ denotes a G-invariant surface. The singularities of X/G come from fix points of G on X or from singularities of X. In any case the…
Let $G$ be a $p$-divisible group over the ring of integers of $\mathbb{C}_p$, and assume that it is endowed with an action of the ring of integers of a finite unramified extension $F$ of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. Let us fix the type $μ$ of this action on the sheaf of differentials $ω_G$. V. Hernandez, following a construction of Goldring and Nicole, defined partial Hasse invariants for $G$. The product of these invariants is the $μ$-ordinary Hasse invariant, and it is non-zero if and only if the $p$-divisible group is $μ$-ordinary (i.e. the Newton polygon is minimal given the type of the action). \\ We …
We classify completely the surfaces of general type whose canonical map is 3-to-1 onto a surface of minimal degree in projective space. These surfaces fall into 5 distinct classes and we give explicit examples belonging to each of these classes. As far as we know, one of the examples thus constructed was unknown and it is a surface whose canonical system has two infinitely near base points.
We extend the known classification of threefolds of general type that are complete intersections to various classes of non-complete intersections, and find other classes of polarised varieties, including Calabi-Yau threefolds with canonical singularities, that are not complete intersections. Our methods apply more generally to construct orbifolds described by equations in given Gorenstein formats.
T.Kishimoto raised the problem to classify all compactifications of contractible affine 3-folds into smooth Fano 3-folds with second Betti number two and classified such compactifications whose log canonical divisors are not nef. In this article, we show that there are 14 deformation equivalence classes of smooth Fano 3-folds which can admit structures of such compactifications whose log canonical divisors are trivial. We also construct an example of such compactifications with trivial log canonical divisors for each of all the 14 classes.
Four-folds with trivial canonical bundles are divided into six classes according to their holonomy group. We consider examples that are fibred by abelian surfaces over the projective plane. We construct such fibrations in five of the six classes, and prove that there is no such fibration in the sixth class. We classify all such fibrations whose generic fibre is the Jacobian of a genus two curve.
Let $X$ be a nonsingular projective $n$-fold $(n\ge 2)$ of Fano or of general type with ample canonical bundle $K_X$ over an algebraic closed field $κ$ of any characteristic. We produce a new method to give a bunch of inequalities in terms of all the Chern classes $c_1, c_2, \cdots, c_n$ by pulling back Schubert classes in the Chow group of Grassmannian under the Gauss map. Moreover, we show that if the characteristic of $κ$ is $0$, then the Chern ratios $(\frac{c_{2,1^{n-2}}}{c_{1^n}}, \frac{c_{2,2,1^{n-4}}}{c_{1^n}}, \cdots, \frac{c_{n}}{c_{1^n}})$ are contained in a convex polyhedron for al…
We study the Cox ring and monoid of effective divisor classes of $\overline{M}_{0,n} = Bl\mathbb{P}^{n-3}$, over a ring R. We provide a bijection between elements of the Cox ring, not divisible by any exceptional divisor section, and pure-dimensional singular simplicial complexes on {1,...,n-1} with nonzero weights in R satisfying a zero-tension condition. This leads to a combinatorial criterion, satisfied by many triangulations of closed manifolds, for a divisor class to be among the minimal generators for the effective monoid. For classes obtained as the strict transform of quadrics, we pres…
There are several ways to generalize characteristic classes for singular algebraic varieties. The simplest ones to describe are Chern-Mather classes obtained by Nash blow up. They serve as an ingredient to construct Chern-MacPherson-Schwartz classes. Unfortunately, they all are defined in homology. There are examples showing, that they do not lie in the image of Poincaré morphism. On the other hand they are represented by an algebraic cycles. Barthel, Brasselet, Fiesler, Kaup and Gabber have shown that, any algebraic cycle can be lifted to intersection homology. Nevertheless, a lift is not uni…
In the present paper, we derive an adjunction formula for the Grauert-Riemenschneider canonical sheaf of a singular hypersurface V in a complex manifold M. This adjunction formula is used to study the problem of extending L2-cohomology classes of dbar-closed forms from the singular hypersurface V to the manifold M in the spirit of the Ohsawa-Takegoshi-Manivel extension theorem. We do that by showing that our formulation of the L2-extension problem is invariant under bimeromorphic modifications, so that we can reduce the problem to the smooth case by use of an embedded resolution of V in M. The…
In this note, we report on a work jointly done with C. Simpson on a generalization of Reznikov's theorem which says that the Chern-Simons classes and in particular the Deligne Chern classes (in degrees $> 1$) are torsion, of a flat vector bundle on a smooth complex projective variety. We consider the case of a smooth quasi--projective variety with an irreducible smooth divisor at infinity. We define the Chern-Simons classes of the Deligne's \textit{canonical extension} of a flat vector bundle with unipotent monodromy at infinity, which lift the Deligne Chern classes and prove that these classe…
The signature of closed oriented manifolds is well-known to be multiplicative under finite covers. This fails for Poincaré complexes as examples of C. T. C. Wall show. We establish the multiplicativity of the signature, and more generally, the topological L-class, for closed oriented stratified pseudomanifolds that can be equipped with a middle-perverse Verdier self-dual complex of sheaves, determined by Lagrangian sheaves along strata of odd codimension (so-called L-pseudomanifolds). This class of spaces contains all Witt spaces and thus all pure-dimensional complex algebraic varieties. We ap…
The aim of this paper is to unveil an unexpected relationship between the normal form of a polynomial with respect to a polynomial ideal and the more geometric concept of orthogonality. We present a new way to calculate the normal form of a polynomial with respect to a polynomial ideal I in the ring of multivariate polynomials over a field K, provided the field K is finite and the ideal I is a vanishing ideal. In order to use the concept of orthogonality, we introduce a symmetric bilinear form on a vector space over a finite field.
We determine the isogeny classes of abelian surfaces over F_q whose group of F_q-rational points has order divisible by q^2. We also solve the same problem for Jacobians of genus-2 curves.

The main purpose of this article is to extend some of the ideas from Schubert calculus to the more general setting of Hamiltonian torus actions on compact symplectic manifolds with isolated fixed points. Given a generic component of the moment map, we define a canonical class α_p in the equivariant cohomology of the manifold M for each fixed point p of M. When they exist, canonical classes form a natural basis of the equivariant cohomology of M; in particular, when M is a flag variety, these classes are the equivariant Schubert classes. We show that the restriction of a canonical class α_p to …
Let $Γ$ be a compact tropical curve (or metric graph) of genus $g$. Using the theory of tropical theta functions, Mikhalkin and Zharkov proved that there is a canonical effective representative (called a break divisor) for each linear equivalence class of divisors of degree $g$ on $Γ$. We present a new combinatorial proof of the fact that there is a unique break divisor in each equivalence class, establishing in the process an "integral" version of this result which is of independent interest. As an application, we provide a "geometric proof" of (a dual version of) Kirchhoff's celebrated Matri…
