When noisy intermediate scalable quantum (NISQ) devices are applied in information processing, all of the stages through preparation, manipulation, and measurement of multipartite qubit states contain various types of noise that are generally hard to be verified in practice. In this work, we present a scheme to deal with unknown quantum noise and show that it can be used to mitigate errors in measurement readout with NISQ devices. Quantum detector tomography that identifies a type of noise in a measurement can be circumvented. The scheme applies single-qubit operations only, that are with relatively higher precision than measurement readout or two-qubit gates. A classical post-processing is then performed with measurement outcomes. The scheme is implemented in quantum algorithms with NISQ devices: the Bernstein-Vazirani algorithm and a quantum amplitude estimation algorithm in IBMQ yorktown and IBMQ essex. The enhancement in the statistics of the measurement outcomes is presented for both of the algorithms with NISQ devices.
Quantum algorithms for molecular electronic structure have been developed with lower computational scaling than their classical counterparts, but emerging quantum hardware is far from being capable of the coherence, connectivity and gate errors required for their experimental realization. Here we propose a class of quantum-classical hybrid algorithms that compute the energy from a two-electron reduced density matrix (2-RDM). The 2-RDM is constrained by $N$-representability conditions, conditions for representing an $N$-electron wavefunction, that mitigates noise from the quantum circuit. We com…
We investigate new features, especially of entanglement dynamics, which arise in a quantum-classical hybrid. As a model, we study the coupling between two quantum mechanical two-level systems, i.e. two q-bits, and a classical harmonic oscillator. Their interaction is described by a hybrid coupling, in accordance with a recently developed quantum-classical hybrid theory. We discuss various situations in which entanglement of the q-bits does (not) evolve. Furthermore, we point out an experimental application in a hybrid cooling scheme and indicate topics for future study.
We revisit quantum-classical hybrid systems of the Sudarshan type under the light of Galilean covariance. We show that these kind of hybrids cannot be given as a unitary representation of the Galilei group and at the same time conserve the total linear momentum unless the interaction term only depends on the relative canonical velocities.
Reducing measurement errors in multi-qubit quantum devices is critical for performing any quantum algorithm. Here we show how to mitigate measurement errors by a classical post-processing of the measured outcomes. Our techniques apply to any experiment where measurement outcomes are used for computing expected values of observables. Two error mitigation schemes are presented based on tensor product and correlated Markovian noise models. Error rates parameterizing these noise models can be extracted from the measurement calibration data using a simple formula. Error mitigation is achieved by ap…
Using the example of the harmonic oscillator, we illustrate the use of hybrid dynamical brackets in analyzing quantum-classical interaction. We only assume that a hybrid dynamical bracket exists, is bilinear, and reduces to the pure quantum/classical bracket when acting on pure quantum/classical variables. Any hybrid bracket obeying these natural requirements will produce the same dynamics for pure classical or quantum variables, given a hybrid Hamiltonian. Backreaction is manifested in the evolution of a nonvanishing commutator between classical variables. The more massive the classical syste…
A hybrid classical-quantum approach for the solution of nonlinear ordinary differential equations using Walsh-Hadamard basis functions is proposed. Central to this hybrid approach is the computation of the Walsh-Hadamard transform of arbitrary vectors, which is enabled in our framework using quantum Hadamard gates along with state preparation, shifting, scaling, and measurement operations. It is estimated that the proposed hybrid classical-quantum approach for the Walsh-Hadamard transform of an input vector of size N results in a considerably lower computational complexity (O(N) operations) co…
Hybrid quantum-classical algorithms have drawn much attention because of their potential to realize the "quantum advantage" in noisy, intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. Here we introduce QRunes, a cross-platform quantum language for hybrid programming. QRunes can be compiled to various host backends, allowing the user to write portable quantum subprograms. The hybrid programming is based on the type system, which is used to decide where a statement should be run. We also introduce Qurator, a VSCode plugin that has QRunes language support and two host backends.
Hybrid quantum-classical algorithms are central to much of the current research in quantum computing, particularly when considering the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era, with a number of experimental demonstrations having already been performed. In this perspective, we discuss in a very broad sense what it means for an algorithm to be hybrid quantum-classical. We first explore this concept very directly, by building a definition based on previous work in abstraction/representation theory, arguing that what makes an algorithm hybrid is not directly how it is run (or how many classica…
We present a hybrid quantum classical neural network that can be trained to perform electronic structure calculation and generate potential energy curves of simple molecules. The method is based on the combination of parameterized quantum circuits and measurements. With unsupervised training, the neural network can generate electronic potential energy curves based on training at certain bond lengths. To demonstrate the power of the proposed new method, we present results of using the quantum-classical hybrid neural network to calculate ground state potential energy curves of simple molecules s…
Deep learning has been shown to be able to recognize data patterns better than humans in specific circumstances or contexts. In parallel, quantum computing has demonstrated to be able to output complex wave functions with a few number of gate operations, which could generate distributions that are hard for a classical computer to produce. Here we propose a hybrid quantum-classical convolutional neural network (QCCNN), inspired by convolutional neural networks (CNNs) but adapted to quantum computing to enhance the feature mapping process. QCCNN is friendly to currently noisy intermediate-scale …
Recent computations involving quantum processing units (QPUs) have demonstrated a series of challenges inherent to hybrid classical-quantum programming, compilation, execution, and verification and validation. Despite considerable progress, system-level noise, limited low-level instructions sets, remote access models, and an overall lack of portability and classical integration presents near-term programming challenges that must be overcome in order to enable reliable scientific quantum computing and support robust hardware benchmarking. In this work, we draw on our experience in programming Q…
We propose a realistic hybrid classical-quantum linear solver to solve systems of linear equations of a specific type, and demonstrate its feasibility using Qiskit on IBM Q systems. This algorithm makes use of quantum random walk that runs in $\mathcal{O}(N\log(N))$ time on a quantum circuit made of $\mathcal{O}(\log(N))$ qubits. The input and output are classical data, and so can be easily accessed. It is robust against noise, and ready for implementation in applications such as machine learning.
This paper proposes a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm to solve a fundamental power system problem called unit commitment (UC). The UC problem is decomposed into a quadratic subproblem, a quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) subproblem, and an unconstrained quadratic subproblem. A classical optimization solver solves the first and third subproblems, while the QUBO subproblem is solved by a quantum algorithm called quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA). The three subproblems are then coordinated iteratively using a three-block alternating direction method of multipli…
We report on experimental implementation of a machine-learned quantum gate driven by a classical control. The gate learns optimal phase-covariant cloning in a reinforcement learning scenario having fidelity of the clones as reward. In our experiment, the gate learns to achieve nearly optimal cloning fidelity allowed for this particular class of states. This makes it a proof of present-day feasibility and practical applicability of the hybrid machine learning approach combining quantum information processing with classical control. Moreover, our experiment can be directly generalized to larger …
Implicit methods are attractive for hybrid quantum-classical CFD solvers as the flow equations are combined into a single coupled matrix that is solved on the quantum device, leaving only the CFD discretisation and matrix assembly on the classical device. In this paper, an implicit hybrid solver is investigated using emulated HHL circuits. The hybrid solutions are compared with classical solutions including full eigen-system decompositions. A thorough analysis is made of how the number of qubits in the HHL eigenvalue inversion circuit affect the CFD solver's convergence rates. Loss of precisio…
Quantum embedding learning is an important step in the application of quantum machine learning to classical data. In this paper we propose a quantum few-shot embedding learning paradigm, which learns embeddings useful for training downstream quantum machine learning tasks. Crucially, we identify the circuit bypass problem in hybrid neural networks, where learned classical parameters do not utilize the Hilbert space efficiently. We observe that the few-shot learned embeddings generalize to unseen classes and suffer less from the circuit bypass problem compared with other approaches.
We re-analyse the optomechanical interferometer experiment proposed by Marshall, Simon, Penrose and Bouwmeester with the help of a recently developed quantum-classical hybrid theory. This leads to an alternative evaluation of the mirror induced decoherence. Surprisingly, we find that it behaves essentially in the same way for suitable initial conditions and experimentally relevant parameters, no matter whether the mirror is considered a classical or quantum mechanical object. We discuss the parameter ranges where this result holds and possible implications for a test of spontaneous collapse mo…
Despite the successes of recent works in quantum reinforcement learning, there are still severe limitations on its applications due to the challenge of encoding large observation spaces into quantum systems. To address this challenge, we propose using a neural network as a data encoder, with the Atari games as our testbed. Specifically, the neural network converts the pixel input from the games to quantum data for a Quantum Variational Circuit (QVC); this hybrid model is then used as a function approximator in the Double Deep Q Networks algorithm. We explore a number of variations of this algo…
In this work we provide a complete model of semiclassical theories by including back-reaction and correlation into the picture. We specially aim at the interaction between light and a two-level atom, and we also illustrate it via the coupling of two harmonic oscillators. Quantum and classical systems are treated on the same grounds via the Wigner-Weyl phase-space correspondence of the quantum theory. We show that this model provides a suitable mixture of the quantum and classical degrees of freedom, including the fact that the evolution transfers nonclassical features to the classical subsyste…
We study the problem of constructing a general hybrid quantum-classical bracket from a partial classical limit of a full quantum bracket. Introducing a hybrid composition product, we show that such a bracket is the commutator of that product. From this we see that the hybrid bracket will obey the Jacobi identity and the Leibniz rule provided the composition product is associative. This suggests that the set of hybrid variables belonging to an associative subalgebra with the composition product will have consistent quantum-classical dynamics. This restricts the class of allowed quantum-classica…
Recently, Vedral and one of us proposed an entanglement-based witness of non-classicality in systems that need not obey quantum theory, based on constructor-information-theoretic ideas, which offers a robust foundation for recently proposed table-top tests of non-classicality in gravity. The witness asserts that if a mediator can entangle locally two quantum systems, then it has to be non-classical. Hall and Reginatto claimed that there are classical systems that can entangle two quantum systems, thus violating our proposed witness. Here we refute that claim, explaining that the counterexample…
We consider a quantum system continuously monitored in time which in turn is coupled to an arbitrary dissipative classical system (diagonal reduced density matrix). The quantum and classical dynamics can modify each other, being described by an arbitrary time-irreversible hybrid Lindblad equation. Given a measurement trajectory, a conditional bipartite stochastic state can be inferred by taking into account all previous recording information (filtering). Here, we demonstrate that the joint quantum-classical state can also be inferred by taking into account both past and future measurement resu…
We propose a Hybrid classical-quantum Autoencoder (HAE) model, which is a synergy of a classical autoencoder (AE) and a parametrized quantum circuit (PQC) that is inserted into its bottleneck. The PQC augments the latent space, on which a standard outlier detection method is applied to search for anomalous data points within a classical dataset. Using this model and applying it to both standard benchmarking datasets, and a specific use-case dataset which relates to predictive maintenance of gas power plants, we show that the addition of the PQC leads to a performance enhancement in terms of pr…
