We investigate the age-chemical abundance structure of the outer Galactic disc at a galactocentric distance of r > 10 kpc as recently revealed by the SDSS/APOGEE survey. Two sequences are present in the [alpha/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane with systematically different stellar ages. Surprisingly, the young sequence is less metal-rich, suggesting a recent dilution process by additional gas accretion. As the stars with the lowest iron abundance in the younger sequence also show an enhancement in alpha-element abundance, the gas accretion event must have involved a burst of star formation. In order to explain these observations, we construct a chemical evolution model. In this model we include a relatively short episode of gas accretion at late times on top of an underlying secular accretion over long timescales. Our model is successful at reproducing the observed distribution of stars in the three dimensional space of [alpha/Fe]-[Fe/H]-Age in the outer disc. We find that a late-time accretion with a delay of 8.2 Gyr and a timescale of 0.7 Gyr best fits the observed data, in particular the presence of the young, metal-poor sequence. Our best-fit model further implies that the amount of accreted gas in the late-time accretion event needs to be about three times the local gas reservoir in the outer disc at the time of accretion in order to sufficiently dilute the metal abundance. Given this large fraction, we interpret the late-time accretion event as a minor merger presumably with a gas-rich dwarf galaxy with a mass M_* < 10^9 M_Sun and a gas fraction of ~ 75 per cent.
We investigate the nature of HI-rich galaxies from the ALFALFA and GASS surveys, which are defined as galaxies in the top 10th percentile in atomic gas fraction at a given stellar mass. We analyze outer (R>1.5 Re) stellar populations for a subset of face-on systems using optical g-r versus r-z colour/colour diagrams. The results are compared with those from control samples that are defined without regard to atomic gas content, but are matched in redshift, stellar mass and structural parameters. HI-rich early-type (C>2.6) and late-type (C<2.6) galaxies are studied separately. When compared to t…
We present H-alpha velocity maps for the HIghMass galaxies UGC 7899, UGC 8475, UGC 9037 and UGC 9334, obtained with the SITELLE Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, to search for kinematic signatures of late gas accretion to explain their large atomic gas reservoirs. The maps for UGC 7899, UGC 9037, and UGC 9334 are amenable to disk wide radial flow searches with the DiskFit algorithm, and those for UGC 7899 and UGC 9037 are also amenable to inner-disk kinematic analyses. We find no evidence for outer disk radial flows down to Vr ~ 20 km/s in UGC 9037 a…
We analyse structural decompositions of 500 late-type galaxies (Hubble $T$-type $\ge 6$) from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S$^4$G), spanning a stellar mass range of about $10^7$ to a few times $10^{10}$ M$_\odot$. Their decomposition parameters are compared with those of the early-type dwarfs in the Virgo cluster from Janz et al. They have morphological similarities, including the fact that the fraction of simple one-component galaxies in both samples increases towards lower galaxy masses. We find that in the late-type two-component galaxies both the inner and outer str…
Color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) derived from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys F606W,F814W photometry of 6 globular clusters (GCs) are presented. The six GCs form two loose groupings in Galactocentric distance (Rgc): IC 4499, NGC 6426, and Ruprecht 106 at ~15-20 kpc and NGC 7006, Palomar 15, and Pyxis at ~40 kpc. The CMDs allow the ages to be estimated from the main sequence turnoff in every case. In addition, the age of Palomar 5 (Rgc ~ 18 kpc) is estimated using archival HST Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 V,I photometry. The age analysis reveals the following: IC 4499, …
Deep HI observations of the outer parts of disc galaxies demonstrate the frequent presence of extended, well-developed spiral arms far beyond the optical radius. To understand the nature and the origin of such outer spiral structure, we investigate the propagation in the outer gaseous disc of large-scale spiral waves excited in the bright optical disc. Using hydrodynamical simulations, we show that non-axisymmetric density waves, penetrating in the gas through the outer Lindblad resonance, can exhibit relatively regular spiral structures outside the bright optical stellar disc. For low-amplitu…
Previous studies of the rotation law in the outer Galactic disc have mainly used gas tracers or clump giants. Here, we explore A and F stars as alternatives: these provide a much denser sampling in the outer disc than gas tracers and have experienced significantly less velocity scattering than older clump giants. This first investigation confirms the suitability of A stars in this role. Our work is based on spectroscopy of $\sim$ 1300 photometrically-selected stars in the red calcium-triplet region, chosen to mitigate against the effects of interstellar extinction. The stars are located in two…
We use $Gaia$ eDR3 data and legacy spectroscopic surveys to map the Milky Way disc substructure towards the Galactic Anticenter at heliocentric distances $d\geq10\,\rm{kpc}$. We report the discovery of multiple previously undetected new filaments embedded in the outer disc in highly extincted regions. Stars in these over-densities have distance gradients expected for disc material and move on disc-like orbits with $v_ϕ\sim170-230\,\rm{km\,s^{-1}}$, showing small spreads in energy. Such a morphology argues against a quiescently growing Galactic thin disc. Some of these structures are interprete…
The HERON project is aimed at studying halos and low surface brightness details near galaxies. In this second HERON paper we consider in detail deep imaging (down to surface brightness of ~28 mag/arcsec$^2$ in the r band) for 35 galaxies, viewed edge-on. We confirm a range of low surface brightness features previously described in the literature but also report new ones. We classify the observed outer shapes of the galaxies into three main types (and their prototypes): disc/diamond-like (NGC891), oval (NGC4302), and boxy (NGC3628). We show that the shape of the outer disc in galaxies does not …
The protoplanetary disc HD 100453 exhibits a curious combination of spirals, shadows and a relative misalignment between the observed outer disc and inferred inner disc. This disc is accompanied by a secondary star on a bound orbit exterior to the disc. Recent observations have suggested there may be an additional low-mass companion residing within the disc inner cavity. In our companion paper the orbit of the secondary was shown to be misaligned by 61 degrees to the plane of the outer disc. Here we investigate the properties of the inner companion and the origin of the misalignment between th…
NGC 4203 is a nearby early-type galaxy surrounded by a very large, low-column-density HI disc. In this paper we study the star formation efficiency in the gas disc of NGC 4203 by using the UV, deep optical imaging and infrared data. We confirm that the HI disc consists of two distinct components: an inner star forming ring with radius from $\sim$ 1 to $\sim$ 3 R$_{eff}$, and an outer disc. The outer HI disc is 9 times more massive than the inner HI ring. At the location of the inner HI ring we detect spiral-like structure both in the deep $g'-r'$ image and in the 8 $μ$m $Spitzer$-IRAC image, e…
With a sample of 48,161 K giant stars selected from the LAMOST DR 2 catalogue, we construct torus models in a large volume extending, for the first time, from the solar vicinity to a Galactocentric distance of $\sim 20$ kpc, reaching the outskirts of the Galactic disc. We show that the kinematics of the K giant stars match conventional models, e.g. as created by Binney in 2012, in the Solar vicinity. However such two-disc models fail if they are extended to the outer regions, even if an additional disc component is utilised. If we loosen constraints in the Sun's vicinity, we find that an effec…
The outer parts of the Milky Way's disc are significantly out of equilibrium. Using only distances and proper motions of stars from Gaia's Early Data Release 3, in the range |b|<10°, 130°<l<230°, we show that for stars in the disc between around 10 and 14 kpc from the Galactic centre, vertical velocity is strongly dependent on the angular momentum, azimuth, and position above or below the Galactic plane. We further show how this behaviour translates into a bimodality in the velocity distribution of stars in the outer Milky Way disc. We use an N-body model of an impulse-like interaction of the …
We present results from photometric and spectroscopic data obtained with SOAR and Gemini observatory facilities in the field of a recently discovered star cluster. The cluster, projected towards the Eastern side of the outer disc of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), was originally placed nearly 10 kpc behind the LMC with an age and metallicity typical of the innermost LMC star cluster population. We assigned radial velocity (RV) memberships to stars observed spectroscopically, and derived the cluster age and distance from theoretical isochrone fitting to the cluster colour-magnitude diagram. T…
We present a detailed analysis of a disc galaxy forming in a high-resolution fully cosmological simulation to investigate the nature of the outer regions of discs and their relevance for the disc formation process. Specifically, we focus on the phenomenon of misaligned disc components and find that the outer disc warp is a consequence of the misalignment between the inner disc and the surrounding hot gaseous halo. As the infalling cold gas sinks toward the centre of the galaxy, it is strongly torqued by the hot gas halo. By the time the fresh gas reaches the central disc-forming region its ang…
We study the stellar populations and assembly of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2903's bulge, bar, and outer disc using the VIRUS-P Exploration of Nearby Galaxies IFS survey. We observe NGC 2903 with a spatial resolution of 185 pc using the Mitchell Spectrograph's 4.25 arcsec fibres at the 2.7 Harlan J. Smith telescope. Bulge-bar-disc decomposition on the 2MASS Ks-band image of NGC 2903 shows that it has ~6%, 6%, and 88%, of its stellar mass in the bulge, bar, and outer disc, respectively, and its bulge has a low Sersic index of ~0.27, suggestive of a disky bulge. We perform stellar population s…
We investigate signatures of a jet-interstellar medium (ISM) interaction using optical integral-field observations of the so-called outer filament near Centaurus A, expanding on previous results obtained on a more limited area. Using the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the VLT during science verification, we observed a significant fraction of the brighter emitting gas across the outer filament. The ionized gas shows complex morphology with compact blobs, arc-like structures and diffuse emission. Based on the kinematics, we identified three main components. The more collimated compo…
We present stellar density maps of the Galactic outer disc with red clump stars from the LAMOST data. These samples are separated into younger (mean age ~ 2.7 Gyr) and older (mean age ~ 4.6 Gyr) populations so that they can trace the variation of the structures with ages in the range of the Galactocentric radius R from 9 to 13.5 kpc. We show that both the scale heights for the two populations increase with R and display radial gradients of 48 +/- 6 and 40 +/- 4 pc/kpc for the older and younger populations, respectively. This is evident that the flaring occurs in the thin disc populations with …
Tilted and warped discs inside tilted dark matter haloes are predicted from numerical and semi-analytical studies. In this paper, we use deep imaging to demonstrate the likely existence of tilted outer structures in real galaxies. We consider two SB0 edge-on galaxies, NGC4469 and NGC4452, which exhibit apparent tilted outer discs with respect to the inner structure. In NGC4469, this structure has a boxy shape, inclined by $Δ$PA$\approx$3$^{\circ}$ with respect to the inner disc, whereas NGC4452 harbours a discy outer structure with $Δ$PA$\approx$6$^{\circ}$. In spite of the different shapes, b…
Modern astrometric and spectroscopic surveys have revealed a wealth of structure in the phase space of stars in the Milky Way, with evidence of resonance features and non-equilibrium processes. Using Gaia's third data release, we present evidence of a new resonance-like feature in the outer disc of the Milky Way. The feature is most evident in the angular momentum distribution of the young Classical Cepheids, a population for which we can derive accurate distances over much of the Galactic disc. We then search for similar features in the outer disc using a much larger sample of red giant stars…
We present a detailed analysis of two fields located 26 kpc (~5 scalelengths) from the centre of M31. One field samples the major axis populations--the Outer Disc field--while the other is offset by ~18' and samples the Warp in the stellar disc. The CMDs based on HST/ACS imaging reach old main-sequence turn-offs (~12.5 Gyr). We apply the CMD-fitting technique to the Warp field to reconstruct the star formation history (SFH). We find that after undergoing roughly constant SF until about 4.5 Gyr ago, there was a rapid decline in activity and then a ~1.5 Gyr lull, followed by a strong burst lasti…
We present the serendipitous discovery of an extremely broad ($ΔV_{LSR} \sim 150$ km/s), faint ($T_{mb} < 10 \textrm{mK}$), and ubiquitous 1667 and 1665 MHz ground-state thermal OH emission towards the 2nd quadrant of the outer Galaxy ($R_{gal}$ > 8 kpc) with the Green Bank Telescope. Originally discovered in 2015, we describe the redundant experimental, observational, and data quality tests of this result over the last five years. The longitude-velocity distribution of the emission unambiguously suggests large-scale Galactic structure. We observe a smooth distribution of OH in radial velocity…
We develop a Bayesian Machine Learning framework called BINGO (Bayesian INference for Galactic archaeOlogy) centred around a Bayesian neural network. After being trained on the APOGEE and \emph{Kepler} asteroseismic age data, BINGO is used to obtain precise relative stellar age estimates with uncertainties for the APOGEE stars. We carefully construct a training set to minimise bias and apply BINGO to a stellar population that is similar to our training set. We then select the 17,305 stars with ages from BINGO and reliable kinematic properties obtained from \textit{Gaia} DR2. By combining the a…
By means of 3D hydrodynamical simulations, in a separate paper we have discussed the properties of non-axisymmetric density wave trains in the outermost regions of galaxy disks, based on the picture that self-excited global spiral modes in the bright optical stellar disk are accompanied by low-amplitude short trailing wave signals outside corotation; in the gas, such wave trains can penetrate through the outer Lindblad resonance and propagate outwards, forming prominent spiral patterns. In this paper we present the synthetic 21~cm velocity maps expected from simulated models of the outer gaseo…

Recent studies of outer spiral disks have given rise to an abundance of new results. We discuss the observational and theoretical advances that have spurred the interest in disk outskirts, as well as where we currently stand in terms of our understanding of outer disk structure, ages and metallicities.
We present radial velocities and [Fe/H] abundances for 340 stars in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal from R~16,000 spectra. The targets have been obtained in the outer parts of the galaxy, a region which has been poorly studied before. Our sample shows a wide range in [Fe/H], between -0.5 and -3.0 dex, in which we detect three subgroups. Removal of stars belonging to the most metal-rich population produces a truncated metallicity distribution function that is identical to Sculptor, indicating that these systems have shared a similar early evolution, only that Fornax experienced a late, intense peri…
We present extremely deep imaging of the well-known edge-on galaxy NGC 4565 (the "Needle Galaxy"), observed as part of the Dragonfly Edge-on Galaxies Survey. Our imaging traces starlight over scales of ~100 kpc to surface brightnesses of ~32 mag/arcsec^2 in azimuthally averaged radial profiles. In narrow slice profiles along the major axis (with bin sizes ranging from 1.7 x 0.5 kpc to 1.7 x 7.8 kpc), we achieve a depth of ~29-30 mag/arcsec^2. We confirm the previously observed asymmetric disc truncation. In addition, the sharp northwest truncation turns over to a shallower component that coinc…
We present the study of a magnitude limited sample (mB < 16.6 mag) of 13 late type galaxies (LTGs), observed inside the virial radius, Rvir 0.7 Mpc, of the Fornax cluster within the Fornax Deep Survey (FDS). The main objective is to use surface brightness (SB) profiles and g-i colour maps to obtain information on the internal structure of these galaxies and find signatures of the mechanisms that drive their evolution in high-density environment, which is inside the virial radius of the cluster. By modelling galaxy isophotes, we extract the azimuthally averaged surface brightness profiles in fo…
I review briefly some dynamical models of structures in the outer parts of disc galaxies, including models of polar rings, tidal tails and bridges. I then discuss the density distribution in the outer parts of discs. For this, I compare observations to results of a model in which the disc galaxy is in fact the remnant of a major merger, and find good agreement. This comparison includes radial profiles of the projected surface density and of stellar age, as well as time evolution of the break radius and of the inner and outer disc scale lengths. I also compare the radial projected surface densi…
