The HERON project is aimed at studying halos and low surface brightness details near galaxies. In this second HERON paper we consider in detail deep imaging (down to surface brightness of ~28 mag/arcsec$^2$ in the r band) for 35 galaxies, viewed edge-on. We confirm a range of low surface brightness features previously described in the literature but also report new ones. We classify the observed outer shapes of the galaxies into three main types (and their prototypes): disc/diamond-like (NGC891), oval (NGC4302), and boxy (NGC3628). We show that the shape of the outer disc in galaxies does not often follow the general 3D model of an exponential disc: 17 galaxies in our sample exhibit oval or even boxy isophotes at the periphery. Also, we show that the less flattened the outer disc is, the more oval or boxy its structure. Many galaxies in our sample have an asymmetric outer structure. We propose that the observed diversity of the galaxy outer shapes is defined by the merger history and its intensity: if no recent multiple minor or single major merging took place, the outer shape is diamond-like or discy. On the contrary, interacting galaxies show oval outer shapes, whereas recent merging appears to transform the outer shape to boxy.
We have used dedicated 0.7m telescopes in California and Israel to image the halos of ~200 galaxies in the Local Volume to 29 mag/sq arcsec, the sample mainly drawn from the 2MASS Large Galaxy Atlas (LGA). We supplement the LGA sample with dwarf galaxies and more distant giant ellipticals. Low surface brightness halos exceeding 50 kpc in diameter are found only in galaxies more luminous than L* and classic interaction signatures are relatively infrequent. Halo diameter is correlated with total galaxy luminosity. Extended low surface brightness halos are present even in galaxies as faint as M_V…
We use a dedicated 0.7-m telescope to image the halos of 119 galaxies in the Local Volume to $μ_r \sim 28-30$ mag/arcsec$^2$. The sample is primarily from the 2MASS Large Galaxy Atlas and extended to include nearby dwarf galaxies and more distant giant ellipticals, and spans fully the galaxy colour-magnitude diagram including the blue cloud and red sequence. We present an initial overview, including deep images of our galaxies. Our observations reproduce previously reported low surface brightness structures, including extended plumes in M51, and a newly discovered tidally extended dwarf galaxy…
We present a far-UV (FUV) study of the star-forming complexes (SFCs) in three nearby galaxies using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). The galaxies are close to face-on and show significant outer disk star formation. Two of them are isolated (NGC 628, NGC 6946), and one is interacting with distant companions (NGC 5457). We compared the properties of the SFCs inside and outside the optical radius (R$_{25}$). We estimated the sizes, star formation rates (SFRs), metallicities, and the Toomre Q parameter of the SFCs. We find that the outer disk SFCs are at least ten times smaller in area th…
We study the stellar populations and assembly of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2903's bulge, bar, and outer disc using the VIRUS-P Exploration of Nearby Galaxies IFS survey. We observe NGC 2903 with a spatial resolution of 185 pc using the Mitchell Spectrograph's 4.25 arcsec fibres at the 2.7 Harlan J. Smith telescope. Bulge-bar-disc decomposition on the 2MASS Ks-band image of NGC 2903 shows that it has ~6%, 6%, and 88%, of its stellar mass in the bulge, bar, and outer disc, respectively, and its bulge has a low Sersic index of ~0.27, suggestive of a disky bulge. We perform stellar population s…
We present results from deep, wide-field surface photometry of three nearby (D=4--7 Mpc) spiral galaxies: M94 (NGC 4736), M64 (NGC 4826), and M106 (NGC 4258). Our imaging reaches limiting surface brightnesses of $μ_{B} \sim$ 28 -- 30 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and probes colors down to $μ_{B} \sim$ 27.5 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. We compare our broadband optical data to available ultraviolet and high column-density HI data to better constrain the star forming history and stellar populations of the outermost parts of each galaxy's disk. Each galaxy has a well-defined radius beyond which little star formation oc…
We present our new, spatially-resolved, photometry in FUV and NUV from images obtained by GALEX, and IRAC1 (3.6 $μ$m) photometry obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope. We analyzed the surface brightness profiles $μ_{\rm{FUV}}$, $μ_{\rm{NUV}}$, $μ_{[3.6]}$, as well as the radial evolution of the (FUV-NUV), (FUV - [3.6]), and (NUV - [3.6]) colors in the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structures in Galaxies (S$^{4}$G) galaxies (d$<$40 Mpc) sample. We defined the GALEX Blue Sequence (GBS) and GALEX Red Sequence (GBR) from the (FUV - NUV) versus (NUV - [3.6]) color-color diagram, populated by late-typ…
We present a Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) imaging study that characterizes the star cluster component of nearby galaxy outer disks (beyond the optical radius R_25). Expanding on the pilot project of Herbert-Fort et al. (2009), we present deep (~ 27.5 mag V-band point-source limiting magnitude) U- and V-band imaging of six galaxies: IC 4182, NGC 3351, NGC 4736, NGC 4826, NGC 5474, and NGC 6503. We find that the outer disk of each galaxy is populated with marginally-resolved star clusters with masses ~10^3 M_sun and ages up to ~ 1 Gyr (masses and ages are limited by the depth of our imaging a…
We investigate two-dimensional image decomposition of nearby, morphologically selected early-type galaxies (ETGs). We are motivated by recent observational evidence of significant size growth of quiescent galaxies and theoretical development advocating a two-phase formation scenario for ETGs. We find that a significant fraction of nearby ETGs show changes in isophotal shape that require multi-component models. The characteristic sizes of the inner and outer component are $\sim 3$ and $\sim 15$ kpc. The inner component lies on the mass-size relation of ETGs at $z \sim 0.25-0.75$, while the oute…
The properties and star formation processes in the far-outer disks of nearby spiral and dwarf irregular galaxies are reviewed. The origin and structure of the generally exponential profiles in stellar disks is considered to result from cosmological infall combined with a non-linear star formation law and a history of stellar migration and scattering from spirals, bars, and random collisions with interstellar clouds. In both spirals and dwarfs, the far-outer disks tend to be older, redder and thicker than the inner disks, with the overall radial profiles suggesting inside-out star formation plu…
(Abridged) We combine data from The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey and the GALEX Nearby Galaxy Survey to study the relationship between atomic hydrogen (HI) and far-ultraviolet (FUV) emission outside the optical radius (r25) in 17 spiral and 5 dwarf galaxies. In this regime, HI is likely to represent most of the ISM and FUV emission to trace recent star formation with little bias due to extinction, so that the two quantities closely trace the underlying relationship between gas and star formation rate (SFR). The azimuthally averaged HI and FUV intensities both decline with increasing radius in this r…
The spatially resolved star formation histories are studied for 32 normal star-forming galaxies drawn from the the Spitzer Extended Disk Galaxy Exploration Science survey. At surface brightness sensitivities fainter than 28 mag arcsec$^{-2}$, the new optical photometry is deep enough to complement archival ultraviolet and infrared imaging and to explore the properties of the emission well beyond the traditional optical extents of these nearby galaxies. Fits to the spectral energy distributions using a delayed star formation history model indicate a subtle but interesting average radial trend f…
We have searched for presence of current star formation in outer stellar rings of early-type disk (S0-Sb) galaxies by inspecting a representative sample of nearby galaxies with rings from the recent Spitzer catalog ARRAKIS (Comeron et al. 2014). We have found that regular rings (of R-type) reveal young stellar population with the age of less than 200~Myr in about half of all the cases, while in the pseudorings (open rings, R'), which inhabit only spiral galaxies, current star formation proceeds almost always.
We present maps of total magnetic field using 'equipartition' assumptions for five nearby normal galaxies at sub-kpc spatial resolution. The mean magnetic field is found to be ~11 μG. The field is strongest near the central regions where mean values are ~20--25 μG and falls to ~15 μG in disk and ~10 μG in the outer parts. There is little variation in the field strength between arm and interarm regions, such that, in the interarms, the field is < 20 percent weaker than in the arms. There is no indication of variation in magnetic field as one moves along arm or interarm after correcting for the …
(abridged) We used HST/ACS to obtain deep V- and I-band images of NGC 1569, one of the closest and strongest starburst galaxies in the Universe. These data allowed us to study the underlying old stellar population, aimed at understanding NGC 1569's evolution over a full Hubble time. We focus on the less-crowded outer region of the galaxy, for which the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) shows predominantly a red giant branch (RGB) that reaches down to the red clump/horizontal branch feature (RC/HB). A simple stellar population analysis gives clear evidence for a more complicated star formation hist…
Formation mechanism of present day population of elliptical galaxies have been revisited in the context of hierarchical cosmological models accompanied by accretion and minor mergers through cross correlation function including spatial effect. The present work investigates the formation and evolution of several components of nearby massive early type galaxies (ETGs) through cross-correlation in the spatial coordinates, right ascension and declination (RA, DEC) and mass-size parameter space with high redshift $(0.5\leq z\leq2.7)$ ETGs. It is found that innermost components of nearby ETGs are hi…
Stellar metallicity gradients in the outer regions of galaxies are a critical tool for disentangling the contributions of in-situ and ex-situ formed stars. In the two-phase galaxy formation scenario, the initial gas collapse creates steep metallicity gradients, while the accretion of stars formed in satellites tends to flatten these gradients in the outskirts, particularly for massive galaxies. This work presents the first compilation of extended metallicity profiles over a wide range of galaxy mass. We use the DEIMOS spectrograph on the Keck telescope in multi-slit mode to obtain radial stell…
Since the first detection of intracluster planetary nebulae in 1996, imaging and spectroscopic surveys identified such stars to trace the radial extent and the kinematics of diffuse light in clusters. This topic of research is tightly linked with the studies of galaxy formation and evolution in dense environment, as the spatial distribution and kinematics of planetary nebulae in the outermost regions of galaxies and in the cluster cores is relevant for setting constraints on cosmological simulations. In this sense, extragalactic planetary nebulae play a very important role in the near-field co…
In order to quantify the relationship between gas accretion and star formation, we analyse a sample of 29 nearby galaxies from the WHISP survey which contains galaxies with and without evidence for recent gas accretion. We compare combined radial profiles of FUV (GALEX) and IR 24 μm (Spitzer) characterizing distributions of recent star formation with radial profiles of CO (IRAM, BIMA, or CARMA) and HI (WSRT) tracing molecular and atomic gas contents to examine star formation efficiencies in symmetric (quiescent), asymmetric (accreting), and interacting (tidally disturbed) galaxies. In addition…
Neutral gas is commonly believed to dominate over stars in the outskirts of galaxies, and investigations of the disk-halo interface are generally considered to be in the domain of radio astronomy. This may simply be a consequence of the fact that deep HI observations typically probe to a lower mass surface density than visible wavelength data. This paper presents low surface brightness optimized visible wavelength observations of the extreme outskirts of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2841. We report the discovery of an enormous low-surface brightness stellar disk in this object. When azimuthall…
We study the population of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in a set of eight nearby ($z <$ 0.035) galaxy clusters, from the Kapteyn IAC WEAVE INT Clusters Survey ($\texttt{KIWICS}$). We report the discovery of 442 UDG candidates in our eight field of views, with 247 of these galaxies lying at projected distances < 1 R$_{200}$ from their host cluster. With the aim of testing theories about their formation, we study the scaling relations of UDGs comparing with different types of galaxies, finding that in the full parameter space they behave as dwarf galaxies and their colors do not seem to correla…
The intermediate results of the ongoing study of deep samples of ~200 galaxies residing in nearby voids, are presented. Their properties are probed via optical spectroscopy, ugri surface photometry, and HI 21-cm line measurements, with emphasis on their evolutionary status. We derive directly the hydrogen mass M(HI), the ratio M(HI)/L_B and the evolutionary parameter gas-phase O/H. Their luminosities and integrated colours are used to derive stellar mass M(*) and the second evolutionary parameter -- gas mass-fraction f_g. The colours of the outer parts, typically representative of the galaxy o…
It is well known that gas in galaxy discs is highly turbulent, but there is much debate on which mechanism can energetically maintain this turbulence. Among the possible candidates, supernova (SN) explosions are likely the primary drivers but doubts remain on whether they can be sufficient in regions of moderate star formation activity, in particular in the outer parts of discs. In this paper, we measure the SN efficiency $η$, namely the fraction of the total SN energy needed to sustain turbulence in galaxies, and verify that SNe can indeed be the sole driving mechanism. The key novelty of our…
We analyse a sample of twelve galaxy clusters, from the Kapteyn IAC WEAVE INT Cluster Survey (KIWICS) looking for dwarf galaxy candidates. By using photometric data in the $r$ and $g$ bands from the Wide Field Camera (WFC) at the 2.5-m Isaac Newton telescope (INT), we select a sample of bright dwarf galaxies (M$_r$ $\leq$ -15.5 mag) in each cluster and analyse their spatial distribution, stellar colour, and as well as their Sérsic index and effective radius. We quantify the dwarf fraction inside the $R_{200}$ radius of each cluster, which ranges from $\sim$ 0.7 to $\sim$ 0.9. Additionally, whe…
Context. The knowledge of abundance distributions is central to understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies. Most of the relations employed for the derivation of gas abundances have so far been derived from observations of outer disk HII regions, despite the known differences between inner and outer regions. Aims. Using integral field spectroscopy (IFS) observations we aim to perform a systematic study and comparison of two inner and outer HII regions samples. The spatial resolution of the IFS, the number of objects and the homogeneity and coherence of the observations allow a comple…
We report Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) continuum observations of six nearby normal galaxies at 333 MHz. The galaxies are observed with angular resolutions better than ~20" (corresponding to a linear scale of about 0.4 - 1 kpc). These observations are sensitive to all the angular scales of interest, since the resolution of the shortest baseline in GMRT is greater than the angular size of the galaxies. Further, for five of these galaxies we show that at 333 MHz, the mean thermal fraction is less than 5%. Using archival data at about 1 GHz, we estimate the mean thermal fraction to be ab…
Recently, there has been an increasing demand for deep imaging surveys to investigate the history of the mass assembly of galaxies in detail by examining the remnants of mergers and accretions, both of which have very low surface brightness (LSB). In addition, the nature of star formation in LSB regions, such as galaxy outer disks, is also an intriguing topic in terms of understanding the physical mechanisms of disk evolution. To address these issues, this study conducts a survey project, called the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) Nearby Galaxy Survey to construct a deep imaging …
NGC 4203 is a nearby early-type galaxy surrounded by a very large, low-column-density HI disc. In this paper we study the star formation efficiency in the gas disc of NGC 4203 by using the UV, deep optical imaging and infrared data. We confirm that the HI disc consists of two distinct components: an inner star forming ring with radius from $\sim$ 1 to $\sim$ 3 R$_{eff}$, and an outer disc. The outer HI disc is 9 times more massive than the inner HI ring. At the location of the inner HI ring we detect spiral-like structure both in the deep $g'-r'$ image and in the 8 $μ$m $Spitzer$-IRAC image, e…
We compare star formation in the inner and outer disks of 11 dwarf Irregular galaxies (dIm) within 3.6 Mpc. The regions are identified on GALEX near-UV images, and modeled with UV, optical, and near-IR colors to determine masses and ages. A few galaxies have made 10^5-10^6 Msun complexes in a starburst phase, while others have not formed clusters in the last 50 Myrs. The maximum region mass correlates with the number of regions as expected from the size-of-sample effect. We find no radial gradients in region masses and ages, even beyond the realm of Halpha emission, although there is an expone…
We continue the exploration of the BaLROG (Bars in Low Redshift Optical Galaxies) sample: 16 large mosaics of barred galaxies observed with the integral field unit SAURON. We quantify the influence of bars on the composition of the stellar component. We derive linestrength indices of H$β$, Fe5015 and Mgb. Based on single stellar population (SSP) models, we calculate ages, metallicities and [Mg/Fe] abundances and their gradients along the bar major and minor axes. The high spatial resolution of our data allows us to identify breaks among index and SSP profiles, commonly at 0.13$\pm$0.06 bar len…
Stellar metallicity distribution functions (MDF) have been measured for resolved stellar populations in the outer halos of many galaxies in nearby groups. Among them, the MDF of NGC 5128, the central giant elliptical in the Centaurus group, provides essential constraints for theories of massive galaxy formation and hierarchical assembly. To investigate the formation and chemical evolution history of the outer halo of giant elliptical galaxies, we examine the chemical properties of three zoom-in high resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of an NGC 5128-like giant elliptical galaxy …
We examine FUV images of the LITTLE THINGS sample of nearby dwarf irregular (dIrr) and Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies to identify distinct young regions in their far outer disks. We use these data, obtained with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer satellite, to determine the furthest radius at which in situ star formation can currently be identified. The FUV knots are found at distances from the center of the galaxies of 1 to 8 disk scale lengths and have ages of <20 Myrs and masses of 20 to 1E5 Msolar. The presence of young clusters and OB associations in the outer disks of dwarf galaxies shows …
We present a catalogue and images of visually detected features, such as asymmetries, extensions, warps, shells, tidal tails, polar rings, and obvious signs of mergers or interactions, in the faint outer regions (at and outside of R_25) of nearby galaxies. This catalogue can be used in future quantitative studies that examine galaxy evolution due to internal and external factors. We are able to reliably detect outer region features down to a brightness level of 0.03 MJy/sr per pixel at 3.6 microns in the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G). We also tabulate companion galaxies…
New deep optical and near-infrared imaging is combined with archival ultraviolet and infrared data for fifteen nearby galaxies mapped in the Spitzer Extended Disk Galaxy Exploration Science survey. These images are particularly deep and thus excellent for studying the low surface brightness outskirts of these disk-dominated galaxies with stellar masses ranging between 10^8 and 10^11 Msun. The spectral energy distributions derived from this dataset are modeled to investigate the radial variations in the galaxy colors and star formation histories. Taken as a whole, the sample shows bluer and you…
We study the rotational motion of the galaxy cluster Abell 2107 at redshift z = 0.04 and its connection to nearby large-scale structures using a large amount of spectroscopic redshift data. By combining 978 new redshifts from the MMT/Hectospec observations with data in the literature, we construct a large sample of 1968 galaxies with measured redshifts at clustercentric radius $R < 60^\prime$. Our sample has high (80%) and spatially uniform completeness at r-band apparent magnitude $m_{r,\textrm{Petro},0}$ < 19.1. We first apply the caustic method to the sample and identify 285 member galaxies…
Spectra of HII regions obtained with Gemini/GMOS are used to derive the radial metallicity gradients of four small, low-mass spiral galaxies. The analysis of the outer disk of one of them, NGC 1058, uncovers the characteristic flattening found in similar extended disk galaxies. After combining these data with published long-slit observations of nearby spiral galaxies, no evidence for a dependence of the disk scale length-normalized metallicity gradients with stellar mass is found, down to log(M*/Msun) ~ 8.5. The abundance gradients derived from these observations are compared to predictions fr…
ALMA 0.5 kpc Resolution Spatially Resolved Investigations of Nuclear Dense Molecular Gas Properties in Nearby Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies Based on HCN and HCO$^{+}$ Three Transition Line Data
Observations of the Milky Way and nearby galaxies show that dense molecular gas correlates with recent star formation, suggesting that the formation of this gas phase may help regulate star formation. A key test of this idea requires wide-area, high-resolution maps of dense molecular gas in galaxies to explore how local physical conditions drive dense gas formation, but these observations have been limited because of the faintness of dense gas tracers like HCN and HCO+. Here we demonstrate the power of the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope -- the largest single-dish millimeter radio telescop…

Though S0 galaxies are usually thought to be `red and dead', they often demonstrate weak star formation organised in ring structures and located in their outer disks. We try to clarify the nature of this phenomenon and its difference from star formation in spiral galaxies. The moderate-luminosity nearby S0 galaxy, UGC 4599, is studied here. By applying long-slit spectroscopy at the Russian 6m telescope, we have measured stellar kinematics for the main body of the galaxy and strong emission-line flux ratios in the ring. After inspecting the gas excitation in the ring using line ratio diagrams a…
The study of 21cm line observations of atomic hydrogen allows detailed insight into the kinematics of spiral galaxies. We use sensitive high-resolution VLA data from The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey (THINGS) to search for radial gas flows primarily in the outer parts (up to $3\times r_{25}$) of ten nearby spiral galaxies. Inflows are expected to replenish the gas reservoir and fuel star formation under the assumption that galaxies evolve approximately in steady state. We carry out a detailed investigation of existing tilted ring fitting schemes and discover systematics that can hamper their ability…
We have traced the spatial distributions of intermediate-age and old stars in nine dwarf galaxies in the distant parts of the Local Group, using multi-epoch 3.6 and 4.5 micron data from the DUST in Nearby Galaxies with Spitzer (DUSTiNGS) survey. Using complementary optical imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope, we identify the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) in the 3.6 micron photometry, separating thermally-pulsating asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stars from the larger red giant branch (RGB) populations. Unlike the constant TRGB in the I-band, at 3.6 micron the TRGB magnitude varies by…
Strong bursts of star formation in galaxies may be triggered either by internal or external mechanisms. We study the distribution and kinematics of the HI gas in the outer regions of 18 nearby starburst dwarf galaxies, that have accurate star-formation histories from HST observations of resolved stellar populations. We find that starburst dwarfs show a variety of HI morphologies, ranging from heavily disturbed HI distributions with major asymmetries, long filaments, and/or HI-stellar offsets, to lopsided HI distributions with minor asymmetries. We quantify the outer HI asymmetry for both our s…
We extract a sample of disc stars within 200 pc of the Sun from the RAVE and SDSS surveys. Distances are estimated photometrically and proper motions are from ground-based data. We show that the velocity-space substructure first revealed in the Geneva-Copenhagen sample is also present in this completely independent sample. We also evaluate action-angle variables for these stars and show that the Hyades stream stars in these data are again characteristic of having been scattered at a Lindblad resonance. Unfortunately, analysis of such local samples can determine neither whether it is an inner o…
We present resolved stellar photometry of NGC 2976 obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) as part of the ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury (ANGST) program. The data cover the radial extent of the major axis of the disk out to 6 kpc, or ~6 scale lengths. The outer disk was imaged to a depth of M_F606W ~ 1, and an inner field was imaged to the crowding limit at a depth of M_F606W ~ -1. Through detailed analysis and modeling of these CMDs we have reconstructed the star formation history of the stellar populations currently residing in these portions of the galaxy, finding similar anc…
Wide-field $u'g'r'i'z'$ Dark Energy Camera observations centred on the giant elliptical galaxy NGC5128 covering $\sim21deg^2$ are used to compile a new catalogue of $\sim3200$ globular clusters (GCs). We report 2404 new candidates, including the vast majority within $\sim140$kpc of NGC5128. We find evidence for a transition at a galactocentric radius of $R_{\rm gc}\approx55$kpc from GCs intrinsic to NGC5128 to those likely to have been accreted from dwarf galaxies or that may transition to the intra-group medium of the Centaurus A galaxy group. We fit power-law surface number density profiles …
We use deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging in the outskirts of the nearby spiral M101 to study stellar populations in the galaxy's outer disk and halo. Our ACS field lies 17.6 arcmin (36 kpc) from the center of M101 and targets the blue "NE Plume" of M101's outer disk, while the parallel WFC3 field lies at a distance of 23.3 arcmin (47 kpc) to sample the galaxy's stellar halo. The WFC3 halo field shows a well-defined red giant branch characterized by low metallicity ([M/H]=-1.7 $\pm$ 0.2), with no evidence of young stellar populations. In contrast, the ACS disk field shows multiple stellar pop…
We present deep HI imaging of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 4414, taken as part of the Westerbork HALOGAS (Hydrogen Accretion in LOcal GAlaxieS) survey. The observations show that NGC 4414 can be characterized by a regularly rotating inner HI disk, and a more disturbed outer disk. Modeling of the kinematics shows that the outer disk is best described by a U-shaped warp. Deep optical imaging also reveals the presence of a low surface brightness stellar shell, indicating a minor interaction with a dwarf galaxy at some stage in the past. Modeling of the inner disk suggests that about 4 percent of …
NGC 2419 is a massive outer halo Galactic globular cluster whose stars have previously been shown to have somewhat peculiar abundance patterns. We have observed seven luminous giants that are members of NGC 2419 with Keck/HIRES at reasonable SNR. One of these giants is very peculiar, with an extremely low [Mg/Fe] and high [K/Fe] but normal abundances of most other elements. The abundance pattern does not match the nucleosynthetic yields of any supernova model. The other six stars show abundance ratios typical of inner halo Galactic globular clusters, represented here by a sample of giants in t…
We measure for the first time the outermost edges of the Milky Way (MW) halo in terms of the depletion and turnaround radii. The inner depletion radius, $r_\mathrm{id}$, identified at the location of maximum infall velocity, separates a growing halo from the draining environment, while the turnaround radius, $r_\mathrm{ta}$, marks the outermost edge of infalling material towards the halo, both of which are located well outside the virial radius. Using the motions of nearby dwarf galaxies within $3\mathrm{Mpc}$, we obtain a marginal detection of the infall zone around the MW with a maximum velo…
High resolution, multi-wavelength maps of a sizeable set of nearby galaxies have made it possible to study how the surface densities of HI, H2 and star formation rate (Sigma_HI, Sigma_H2, Sigma_SFR) relate on scales of a few hundred parsecs. At these scales, individual galaxy disks are comfortably resolved, making it possible to assess gas-SFR relations with respect to environment within galaxies. Sigma_H2, traced by CO intensity, shows a strong correlation with Sigma_SFR and the ratio between these two quantities, the molecular gas depletion time, appears to be constant at about 2Gyr in large…
I review observational studies of the large-scale star formation process in nearby galaxies. A wealth of new multi-wavelength data provide an unprecedented view on the interplay of the interstellar medium and (young) stellar populations on a few hundred parsec scale in 100+ galaxies of all types. These observations enable us to relate detailed studies of star formation in the Milky Way to the zoo of galaxies in the distant universe. Within the disks of spiral galaxies, recent star formation strongly scales with the local amount of molecular gas (as traced by CO) with a molecular gas depletion …
We investigate the dynamics of starbursting dwarf galaxies, using both new and archival HI observations. We consider 18 nearby galaxies that have been resolved into single stars by HST observations, providing their star formation history and total stellar mass. We find that 9 objects have a regularly-rotating HI disk, 7 have a kinematically disturbed HI disk, and 2 show unsettled HI distributions. Two galaxies (NGC 5253 and UGC 6456) show a velocity gradient along the minor axis of the HI disk, that we interpret as strong radial motions. For galaxies with a regularly rotating disk we derive ro…
Massive early-type galaxies have undergone dramatic structural evolution over the last 10 Gyr. A companion paper shows that nearby elliptical galaxies with M*>1.3x10^{11} M_sun generically contain three photometric subcomponents: a compact inner component with effective radius Re<1 kpc, an intermediate-scale middle component with Re~2.5 kpc, and an extended outer envelope with $R_e \approx 10$ kpc. Here we attempt to relate these substructures with the properties of early-type galaxies observed at higher redshifts. We find that a hypothetical structure formed from combining the inner plus the …
