Neutral gas is commonly believed to dominate over stars in the outskirts of galaxies, and investigations of the disk-halo interface are generally considered to be in the domain of radio astronomy. This may simply be a consequence of the fact that deep HI observations typically probe to a lower mass surface density than visible wavelength data. This paper presents low surface brightness optimized visible wavelength observations of the extreme outskirts of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2841. We report the discovery of an enormous low-surface brightness stellar disk in this object. When azimuthally averaged, the stellar disk can be traced out to a radius of $\sim$70 kpc (5 $R_{25}$ or 23 inner disk scale lengths). The structure in the stellar disk traces the morphology of HI emission and extended UV emission. Contrary to expectations, the stellar mass surface density does not fall below that of the gas mass surface density at any radius. In fact, at all radii greater than $\sim$20 kpc, the ratio of the stellar to gas mass surface density is a constant 3:1. Beyond $\sim$30 kpc, the low surface brightness stellar disk begins to warp, which may be an indication of a physical connection between the outskirts of the galaxy and infall from the circumgalactic medium. A combination of stellar migration, accretion and in-situ star formation might be responsible for building up the outer stellar disk, but whatever mechanisms formed the outer disk must also explain the constant ratio between stellar and gas mass in the outskirts of this galaxy.
We present extremely deep imaging of the well-known edge-on galaxy NGC 4565 (the "Needle Galaxy"), observed as part of the Dragonfly Edge-on Galaxies Survey. Our imaging traces starlight over scales of ~100 kpc to surface brightnesses of ~32 mag/arcsec^2 in azimuthally averaged radial profiles. In narrow slice profiles along the major axis (with bin sizes ranging from 1.7 x 0.5 kpc to 1.7 x 7.8 kpc), we achieve a depth of ~29-30 mag/arcsec^2. We confirm the previously observed asymmetric disc truncation. In addition, the sharp northwest truncation turns over to a shallower component that coinc…
We present the unexpected discovery of four ultra diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in a group environment. We recently identified seven extremely low surface brightness galaxies in the vicinity of the spiral galaxy M101, using data from the Dragonfly Telephoto Array. The galaxies have effective radii of $10"-38"$ and central surface brightnesses of $25.6-27.7$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in g-band. We subsequently obtained follow-up observations with $HST$ to constrain the distances to these galaxies. Four remain persistently unresolved even with the spatial resolution of $HST$/ACS, which implies distances of $D…
We present HST/ACS imaging of twenty-three very low surface brightness ($μ_{e,V}$=25-27.5) galaxies detected in the fields of four nearby galaxy groups. These objects were selected from deep optical imaging obtained with the Dragonfly Telephoto Array. Seven are new discoveries, while most of the others had been identified previously in visual surveys of deep photographic plates and more recent surveys. Few have previously been studied in detail. From the ACS images, we measure distances to the galaxies using both the tip of the red giant branch method and the surface brightness fluctuations me…
In 2008 it was reported that the stellar stream of the edge-on spiral NGC5907 loops twice around the galaxy, enveloping it in a giant corkscrew-like structure. Here we present imaging of this iconic object with the Dragonfly Telephoto Array, reaching a $1σ$ surface brightness level of $μ_g\approx 30.5$ mag/arcsec$^2$ on spatial scales of 1' (the approximate width of the stream). We find a qualitatively different morphology from that reported in the 2008 study. The Dragonfly data do not show two loops but a single curved stream with a total length of 45' (220 kpc). The surface brightness of the…
Galaxies are thought to grow through accretion; as less massive galaxies are disrupted and merge over time, their debris results in diffuse, clumpy stellar halos enveloping the central galaxy. Here we present a study of the variation in the stellar halos of galaxies, using data from the Dragonfly Nearby Galaxies Survey (DNGS). The survey consists of wide field, deep ($μ_{g} > 31$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$) optical imaging of nearby galaxies using the Dragonfly Telephoto Array. Our sample includes eight spiral galaxies with stellar masses similar to that of the Milky Way, inclinations of $16-90$ degree…
Stellar mass estimates of massive galaxies are susceptible to systematic errors in their photometry, due to their extended light profiles. In this study we use data from the Dragonfly Wide Field Survey (DWFS) to accurately measure the total luminosities and colors of nearby massive galaxies. The low surface brightness limits of the survey ($μ_g \approx $ 31 mag arcsec $^{-2}$ on a one arcmin scale) allows us to implement a method, based on integrating the 1-D surface brightness profile, that is minimally dependent on any parameterization. We construct a sample of 1188 massive galaxies with $\l…
We obtained follow-up HST observations of the seven low surface brightness galaxies discovered with the Dragonfly Telephoto Array in the field of the massive spiral galaxy M101. Out of the seven galaxies, only three were resolved into stars and are potentially associated with the M101 group at $D=7\text{ Mpc}$. Based on HST ACS photometry in the broad F606W and F814W filters, we use a maximum likelihood algorithm to locate the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) in galaxy color-magnitude diagrams. Distances are $6.38^{+0.35}_{-0.35}, 6.87^{+0.21}_{-0.30}$ and $6.52^{+0.25}_{-0.27} \text{ Mpc}$ …
Low surface brightness galactic stellar halos provide a challenging but promising path towards unraveling the past assembly histories of individual galaxies. Here, we present detailed comparisons between the stellar halos of Milky Way-mass disk galaxies observed as part of the Dragonfly Nearby Galaxies Survey (DNGS) and stellar mass-matched galaxies in the TNG100 run of the IllustrisTNG project. We produce stellar mass maps as well as mock $g$ and $r$-band images for randomly oriented simulated galaxies, convolving the latter with the Dragonfly PSF and taking care to match the background noise…
We present the primary results from the Dragonfly Edge-on Galaxies Survey (DEGS), an exploration of the stellar halos of twelve nearby ($d < 25$ Mpc) edge-on disc galaxies with the Dragonfly Telephoto Array. The edge-on orientation of these galaxies allows their stellar halos to be explored with minimal obscuration by or confusion with the much brighter disc light. Galaxies in the sample span a range of stellar masses from $10^{9.68} - 10^{10.88} M_\odot$. We confirm that the wide range of stellar halo mass fractions previously seen for Milky Way-mass galaxies is also found among less massive …
The low surface brightness visible wavelength Universe below 29 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ is teeming with unexplored astrophysical phenomena. Structures fainter than this surface brightness are extremely difficult to image due to systematic errors of sky subtraction and scattered light in the atmosphere and in the telescope. In Chapter 1, I show how The Dragonfly Telephoto Array (Dragonfly for short) addresses these systematics via a combination of hardware and software and is able to image at a level of 30 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ or fainter. In Chapter 2, I describe the Dragonfly Pipeline and how it is opt…
We describe an empirical, self-contained method to isolate faint, large-scale emission in imaging data of low spatial resolution. Multi-resolution filtering (MRF) uses independent data of superior spatial resolution and point source depth to create a model for all compact and high surface brightness objects in the field. This model is convolved with an appropriate kernel and subtracted from the low resolution image. The halos of bright stars are removed in a separate step and artifacts are masked. The resulting image only contains extended emission fainter than a pre-defined surface brightness…
We describe the Dragonfly Telephoto Array, a robotic imaging system optimized for the detection of extended ultra low surface brightness structures. The array consists of eight Canon 400mm f/2.8 telephoto lenses coupled to eight science-grade commercial CCD cameras. The lenses are mounted on a common framework and are co-aligned to image simultaneously the same position on the sky. The system provides an imaging capability equivalent to a 0.4m aperture f/1.0 refractor with a 2.6 deg X 1.9 deg field of view. The system has no obstructions in the light path, optimized baffling, and internal opti…
Observations of nearby galaxy clusters at low surface brightness have identified galaxies with low luminosities, but sizes as large as L* galaxies, leading them to be dubbed "ultra-diffuse galaxies" (UDGs). The survival of UDGs in dense environments like the Coma cluster suggests that UDGs could reside in much more massive dark halos. We report the detection of a substantial population of globular clusters (GCs) around a Coma UDG, Dragonfly 17 (DF17). We find that DF17 has a high GC specific frequency of S_N=26+/-13. The GC system is extended, with an effective radius of 12"+/-2", or 5.6+/-0.9…
Star formation induced by a spiral shock wave, which in turn is generated by a spiral density wave, produces an azimuthal age gradient across the spiral arm, which has opposite signs on either side of the corotational resonance. An analysis of the spatial separation between young star clusters and nearby HII regions made it possible to determine the position of the corotation radius in the studied galaxies. Fourier analysis of the gas velocity field in the same galaxies independently confirmed the corotation radius estimates obtained by the morphological method presented here.
We present the results of CO(J=3-2) on-the-fly mappings of two nearby non-barred spiral galaxies NGC 628 and NGC 7793 with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment at an effective angular resolution of 25". We successfully obtained global distributions of CO(J=3-2) emission over the entire disks at a sub-kpc resolution for both galaxies. We examined the spatially-resolved (sub-kpc) relationship between CO(J=3-2) luminosities (L'CO(3-2)) and infrared (IR) luminosities (LIR) for NGC 628, NGC 7793, and M 83, and compared it with global luminosities of JCMT Nearby Galaxy Legacy Survey sample…
We present the detection of hydrogen fluoride, HF, in two luminous nearby galaxies NGC 253 and NGC 4945 using the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) on board the Herschel Space Observatory. The HF line toward NGC 253 has a P-Cygni profile, while an asymmetric absorption profile is seen toward NGC 4945. The P-Cygni profile in NGC 253 suggests an outflow of molecular gas with a mass of M(H$_2$)$_{out}$ $\sim$ 1 $\times$ 10$^7$ M$_\odot$ and an outflow rate as large as M $\sim$ 6.4 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. In the case of NGC 4945, the axisymmetric velocity components in the HF line pro…
We study the velocity dispersion profiles of the nuclei of NGC 1326, 2685, 5273 and 5838 in the CO first overtone band. There is evidence for a black hole (BH) in NGC 1326 and 5838. Gas is seen flowing out of the nuclear region of NGC 5273. We put upper limits on the nuclear BHs responsible for its activity and that of NGC 2685.
We use observational properties of galaxies accumulated in the Updated Nearby Galaxy Catalog to derive a dark matter mass of luminous galaxies via motions of their companions. The data on orbital-to-stellar mass ratio are presented for 15 luminous galaxies situated within 11 Mpc from us: the Milky Way, M31, M81, NGC5128, IC342, NGC253, NGC4736, NGC5236, NGC6946, M101, NGC4258, NGC4594, NGC3115, NGC3627 and NGC3368, as well as for a composit suite around other nearby galaxies of moderate and low luminosity. The typical ratio for them is M_{orb}/M* = 31, corresponding to the mean local density o…
We present the results of a reverberation-mapping program targeting NGC5273, a nearby early-type galaxy with a broad-lined active galactic nucleus. Over the course of the monitoring program, NGC5273 showed strong variability that allowed us to measure time delays in the responses of the broad optical recombination lines to changes in the continuum flux. A weighted average of these measurements results in a black hole mass determination of $M_{\rm BH} = (4.7 \pm 1.6) \times 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$. An estimate of the size of the black hole sphere of influence in NGC5273 puts it just at the limit of t…
We present observational data of a molecular line survey toward the nearby galaxies NGC 1068, NGC 253, and IC 342 at the wavelengths of 3 mm ($\sim$85--116 GHz) obtained with the Nobeyama 45 m radio telescope. In IC 342 the line survey with high spectral resolution at the 3 mm region was reported for the first time. NGC 1068 is a nearby gas-rich galaxy with X-rays from an active galactic nucleus (AGN), and NGC 253 and IC 342 are nearby gas-rich galaxies with prototypical starbursts. These galaxies are useful to study the impacts of X-rays and ultraviolet radiation on molecular abundances. The …
The study of gas-dust interactions occurring in the interstellar medium of a galaxy is essential for understanding various physical processes taking place within it. A comparison of such events at different locations corresponding to diverse astrophysical environments provides more insight into the star-formation as well as dust destruction conditions and time-scales. We present a case study for two galaxies: NGC 3184 and NGC 7793, which are typical examples of a `grand design spiral' and a `flocculent spiral', respectively. We investigate the gas-dust correlations at various spatially resolve…
The Survey of Water and Ammonia in Nearby galaxies (SWAN) studies atomic and molecular species across the nuclei of four star forming galaxies: NGC\,253, IC\,342, NGC\,6946, and NGC\,2146. As part of this survey, we present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) molecular line observations of three galaxies: IC\,342, NGC\,6946 and NGC\,2146. NGC\,253 is covered in a previous paper. These galaxies were chosen to span an order of magnitude in star formation rates and to select a variety of galaxy types. We target the metastable transitions of ammonia NH$_{3}$(1,1) to (5,5), the 22\,GHz water (H$_…
We present $^{12}$CO \textit{J=3$\rightarrow$2} maps of NGC 2976 and NGC 3351 obtained with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), both early targets of the JCMT Nearby Galaxy Legacy Survey (NGLS). We combine the present observations with $^{12}$CO \textit{J=1$\rightarrow$0} data and find that the computed $^{12}$CO \textit{J=3$\rightarrow$2} to $^{12}$CO \textit{J=1$\rightarrow$0} line ratio ($R_{31}$) agrees with values measured in other NGLS field galaxies. We compute the M$_{\rm{H_2}}$ value and find that it is robust against the value of $R_{31}$ used. Using \textsc{Hi} data from the T…
We present a far-UV (FUV) study of the star-forming complexes (SFCs) in three nearby galaxies using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). The galaxies are close to face-on and show significant outer disk star formation. Two of them are isolated (NGC 628, NGC 6946), and one is interacting with distant companions (NGC 5457). We compared the properties of the SFCs inside and outside the optical radius (R$_{25}$). We estimated the sizes, star formation rates (SFRs), metallicities, and the Toomre Q parameter of the SFCs. We find that the outer disk SFCs are at least ten times smaller in area th…
We present preliminary results of deep echelle spectrophotometry of a sample of HII regions along the disk of the Scd galaxy NGC300 obtained with the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) with the aim of detect and measure very faint OII and CII permitted lines. We focus this study on the C and O abundances obtained from faint optical recombination lines (ORLs) instead of the most commonly used collisionally excited lines (CELs). We have derived the ionic abundances of C++ from the CII 4267 angstrom RL and O++ from the multiplet 1 of OII around 46…
We present the first satellite system of the Large Binocular Telescope Satellites Of Nearby Galaxies Survey (LBT-SONG), a survey to characterize the close satellite populations of Large Magellanic Cloud to Milky Way-mass, star-forming galaxies in the Local Volume. In this paper, we describe our unresolved diffuse satellite finding and completeness measurement methodology and apply this framework to NGC 628, an isolated galaxy with $\sim1/4$ the stellar mass of the Milky Way. We present two new dwarf satellite galaxy candidates: NGC 628 dwA, and dwB with $\text{M}_{\text{V}}$ = $-12.2$ and $-7.…
Stellar streams are regarded as crucial objects to test galaxy formation models, with their morphology tracing the underlying potentials and their occurrence tracking the assembly history of the galaxies. The existence of one of the most iconic stellar streams, the double loop around NGC5907, has recently been questioned by new observations with the Dragonfly telescope. This new work only finds parts of the stream, even though they reach a 1 sigma surface brightness limit of 30.3 mag per sq. arcsec in the g-band. Using 7.2 hours of Luminance L-band imaging with the Milanković 1.4 meter telesco…
Most radio galaxies are hosted by giant gas-poor ellipticals, but some contain significant amounts of dust, which is likely to be of external origin. In order to characterize the mid-IR properties of two of the most nearby and brightest merger-remnant radio galaxies of the Southern hemisphere, NGC 1316 (Fornax A) and NGC 612 (PKS 0131-36), we used observations with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) at wavelengths of 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 micron and Spitzer mid-infrared spectra. By applying a resolution-enhancement technique, new WISE images were produced at angular resolutions rangi…
We present a detailed study of the nuclear star clusters (NSCs) and massive black holes (BHs) of four of the nearest low-mass early-type galaxies: M32, NGC205, NGC5012, and NGC5206. We measure dynamical masses of both the BHs and NSCs in these galaxies using Gemini/NIFS or VLT/SINFONI stellar kinematics, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, and Jeans Anisotropic Models. We detect massive BHs in M32, NGC5102, and NGC5206, while in NGC205, we find only an upper limit. These BH mass estimates are consistent with previous measurements in M32 and NGC205, while those in NGC5102 and NGC5206 are esti…
We present new HI spectral line images of the nearby low-mass galaxy NGC 5238, acquired with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). Located at a distance of 4.51+/-0.04 Mpc, NGC 5238 is an actively star-forming galaxy with widespread H-alpha and UV continuum emission. The source is included in many ongoing and recent nearby galaxy surveys, but until this work the spatially resolved qualities of its neutral interstellar medium have remained unstudied. Our HI images resolve the disk on physical scales of ~400 pc, allowing us to undertake a detailed comparative study of the gaseous and stella…
Gas-phase abundances in HII regions of two spiral galaxies, NGC7793 and NGC4945, have been studied to determine their radial metallicity gradients. We used the strong-line method to derive oxygen abundances from spectra acquired with GMOS-S, the multi-object spectrograph on the 8m- Gemini South telescope. We found that NGC7793 has a well-defined gas-phase radial oxygen gradient of -0.321 $\pm$ 0.112 dex R$_{\rm 25}^{-1}$ (or -0.054 $\pm$ 0.019 dex kpc$^{-1}$) in the galactocentric range 0.17$<$R$_{\rm G}$/R$_{\rm 25}$ $<$ 0.82, not dissimilar from gradients calculated with direct abundance met…
Spectra that cover wavelengths from 0.6 to 1.1um are used to examine the behavior of emission and absorption features in a contiguous 22 x 300 arcsec region centered on the nearby dwarf galaxy NGC 55. Based on the relative strengths of various emission features measured over spatial scales of many tens of parsecs, it is concluded that the ionization states and sulphur abundances in most of the star-forming regions near the center of NGC 55 are similar. A large star-forming region is identified in the north west part of the disk at a projected distance of ~1 kpc from the galaxy center that has …
The formation of nuclear star clusters (NSCs) remains an open question. In this work, we use spatially resolved HST/STIS spectroscopic observations of three nearby NSCs (hosted by NGC 5102, NGC 5206, and NGC 205) to constrain their formation histories by exploring radial variations of the stellar populations within each cluster. Utilizing full-spectrum fitting, we find substantial age and metallicity gradients within the central 0."9 (16~pc) of the NSC in NGC 5102 where populations near the center are young/metal-rich (age ~400~Myr and [M/H] ~-0.4) and become older/metal-poor at larger radii (…
Interacting galaxies provide us with an excellent laboratory for studying a number of physical phenomena associated with these processes. In this paper, we present a spectroscopic and kinematic analysis of the interacting galaxy NGC 4656 and its companion Tidal Dwarf Galaxy (TDG) candidate, NGC 4656UV. Using Fabry-Perot and GMOS multi-slit data, we investigated the possible origin of NGC 4656UV. We found that NGC 4656UV has a low metallicity (12+log(O/H)$\sim$8.2) and it follows the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) for normal dwarf galaxies. For NGC 4656, we estimated a flat oxygen abundance gr…
We present newly discovered dwarf galaxy candidates in deep and wide-field images of NGC 1291 obtained with the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network. We identify 15 dwarf galaxy candidates by visual inspection. Using imaging simulations, we demonstrate that the completeness rate of our detection is greater than 70% for the central surface brightness value of $μ_{0,R}\lesssim26$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and for magnitudes $M_R\lesssim-10$ mag. The structural and photometric properties of the dwarf galaxy candidates appear to be broadly consistent with those of ordinary dwarf galaxies in nearby groups …
We study the stellar populations and assembly of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2903's bulge, bar, and outer disc using the VIRUS-P Exploration of Nearby Galaxies IFS survey. We observe NGC 2903 with a spatial resolution of 185 pc using the Mitchell Spectrograph's 4.25 arcsec fibres at the 2.7 Harlan J. Smith telescope. Bulge-bar-disc decomposition on the 2MASS Ks-band image of NGC 2903 shows that it has ~6%, 6%, and 88%, of its stellar mass in the bulge, bar, and outer disc, respectively, and its bulge has a low Sersic index of ~0.27, suggestive of a disky bulge. We perform stellar population s…
Star-forming galaxies are rich reservoirs of dust, both warm and cold. But the cold dust emission is faint alongside the relatively bright and ubiquitous warm dust emission. Recently, evidence for a very cold dust component has also been revealed via millimeter/submillimeter photometry of some galaxies. This component, despite being the most massive of the three dust components in star-forming galaxies, is by virtue of its very low temperature, faint and hard to detect together with the relatively bright emission from warmer dust. Here we analyze the dust content of a carefully selected sample…
We report the discovery of large amounts of previously undetected cold neutral atomic hydrogen (\HI) around the core triplet galaxies in the nearby NGC~7232 galaxy group with MeerKAT. With a physical resolution of $\sim$1 kpc, we detect a complex web of low surface brightness \HI\ emission down to a 4$σ$ column density level of $\sim$1 $\times$ 10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ (over 44 \kms ). The newly discovered H\,{\sc i} streams extend over $\sim$20 arcmin corresponding to 140~kpc in projection. This is $\sim$3 times the \HI\ extent of the galaxy triplet (52 kpc). The \HI\ debris has an \HI\ mass of $\…
It is important to investigate the relationships between the power sources and the chemical compositions of galaxies for understanding the scenario of galaxy evolution. We carried out an unbiased molecular line survey towards AGN host galaxy NGC1068, and prototypical starburst galaxies, NGC 253 and IC 342, with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope in the 3-mm band. The advantage of this line survey is that the obtained spectra have the highest angular resolution ever obtained with single-dish telescopes. In particular, the beam size of this telescope is ~15"--19", which is able to spatially separate th…
Aims: The purpose of this work is to study the properties of the spatial distribution of the young population in three nearby galaxies in order to better understand the first stages of star formation. Methods: We used ACS/HST photometry and the "path-linkage criterion" in order to obtain a catalog of young stellar groups (YSGs) in the galaxy NGC 2403. We studied the internal distribution of stars in these YSGs using the Q parameter. We extended these analyses to the YSGs detected in in NGC 300 and NGC 253 our previous works. We built the young stars' density maps for these three galaxies. Thro…
By analyzing the Chandra archival data of the nearby NGC 6338 galaxy group, we identify two X-ray bright clumps (N-clump and S-clump) within the central 100 kpc, and detect an arc-like X-ray brightness discontinuity at the south boundary of the N-clump, which is defined as a cold front with a gas flow Mach number of M<0.8. Furthermore, at the north-east boundary of the S-clump (dominated by galaxy NGC 6338) another X-ray edge is detected that corresponds to a weaker cold front. Therefore, the two clumps are approaching each other approximately from opposite directions, and the group is undergo…
We report the detection of two dwarf galaxies in a projected distance of ~50 kpc from NGC 7331 and suspect the physical nature of dwarfs of this spiral galaxy.
Dwarf galaxies are key objects for small-scale cosmological tests like the abundance problems or the planes-of-satellites problem. It is therefore a crucial task to get accurate information for as many nearby dwarf galaxies as possible. Using extremely deep, ground-based $V$ and $i$-band Subaru Suprime Cam photometry with a completeness of $i=27$ mag, we measure the tip of the red giant branch distance for the dwarf galaxy [TT2009] 25. This dwarf resides in the field around the Milky Way-analog NGC 891. By using a Bayesian approach, we measure a distance of $10.28^{+1.17}_{-1.73}$ Mpc, which i…
We report the discovery of NGC 253-dw2, a dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy candidate undergoing tidal disruption around a nearby spiral galaxy, NGC 253 in the Sculptor group: the first such event identified beyond the Local Group. The dwarf was found using small-aperture amateur telescopes, and followed up with Suprime-Cam on the 8 m Subaru Telescope in order to resolve its brightest stars. Using g- and R_c-band photometry, we detect a red giant branch consistent with an old, metal-poor stellar population at a distance of ~ 3.5 Mpc. From the distribution of likely member stars, we infer a highly…
We improve the dynamical black hole (BH) mass estimates in three nearby low-mass early-type galaxies--NGC 205, NGC 5102, and NGC 5206. We use new \hst/STIS spectroscopy to fit the star formation histories of the nuclei in these galaxies, and use these measurements to create local color--mass-to-light ratio (\ml) relations. We then create new mass models from \hst~imaging and combined with adaptive optics kinematics, we use Jeans dynamical models to constrain their BH masses. The masses of the central BHs in NGC 5102 and NGC 5206 are both below one million solar masses and are consistent with o…
We present a detailed study of AGN feedback in the narrow-line region (NLR) of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151. We illustrate the data and techniques needed to determine the mass outflow rate and kinetic luminosity of the outflowing ionized gas as a function of position in the NLR. We find that the mass outflow rate peaks at a value of 3 solar masses per year at a distance of 70 pc from the central supermassive black hole (SMBH), which is about 10 times the outflow rate coming from inside 13 pc, and 230 times the mass accretion rate inferred from the bolometric luminosity of NGC 4151. Thus, most…
New deep VLA D array HI observations of the highly inclined nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2683 are presented. Archival C array data were processed and added to the new observations. To investigate the 3D structure of the atomic gas disk, we made different 3D models for which we produced model HI data cubes. The main ingredients of our best-fit model are (i) a thin disk inclined by 80 degrees; (ii) a crude approximation of a spiral and/or bar structure by an elliptical surface density distribution of the gas disk; (iii) a slight warp in inclination; (iv) an exponential flare; and (v) a low surface-d…
The very young open cluster (OC) NGC 2244 in the Rosette Nebula was studied with field-star-decontaminated 2MASS photometry, which shows the main-sequence (MS) stars and an abundant pre-MS (PMS) population. Fundamental and structural parameters were derived with colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), stellar radial density profiles (RDPs) and mass functions (MFs). Most previous studies centred NGC 2244 close to the bright K0V star 12 Monocerotis, which is not a cluster member. Instead, the near-IR RDP indicates a pronounced core near the O5 star HD 46150. We derive an age within 1--6 Myr, an absorp…
We used the IRAM 30m telescope to observe the frequency range [86-116]GHz towards the central regions of the starburst galaxies M83, M82, and NGC253, the AGNs M51, NGC1068, and NGC7469, and the ULIRGs Arp220 and Mrk231. Assuming LTE conditions, we calculated the column densities of 27 molecules and 10 isotopologues. Among others, we report the first tentative detections of CH3CHO, HNCO, and NS in M82 and, for the first time in the extragalactic medium, HC5N in NGC253. Halpha recombination lines were only found in M82 and NGC253. Vibrationally excited lines of HC3N were only detected in Arp220.…
We present Karl G Jansky Very Large Array molecular line observations of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253, from SWAN: "Survey of Water and Ammonia in Nearby galaxies". SWAN is a molecular line survey at centimeter wavelengths designed to reveal the physical conditions of star forming gas over a range of star forming galaxies. NGC 253 has been observed in four 1GHz bands from 21 to 36 GHz at 6" ($\sim100$pc) spatial and 3.5 km s$^{-1}$ spectral resolution. In total we detect 19 transitions from seven molecular and atomic species. We have targeted the metastable inversion transitions of ammon…
Centimeter-wave transitions are important counterparts to the rotational mm-wave transitions usually observed to study gas in star-forming regions. However, given their relative weakness, these transitions have historically been neglected. We present Australia Telescope Compact Array 4cm- and 15mm-band spectral line observations of nine nearby star-forming galaxies in the H75 array configuration. Thirteen different molecular lines are detected across the sample from OH, NH$_3$, H$_2$O, H$_2$CO, and c-C$_3$H$_2$, as well as 18 radio recombination lines (RRLs) in NGC 253. Excited OH $^2Π_{3/2}$ …
We present MUSE Integral Field Unit (IFU) observations of five individual HII regions in two giant (>100 pc in radius) star-forming complexes in the low-metallicity ($Z$~0.33 $Z_{\odot}$) nearby (D ~ 2 Mpc) dwarf spiral galaxy NGC 300. We combine the IFU data with high spatial resolution HST photometry to demonstrate the extraction of stellar spectra and the classification of individual stars from ground-based data at the distance of 2 Mpc. For the two star-forming complexes, in which no O-type stars had previously been identified, we find a total of 13 newly identified O-type stars in the mas…
