Despite the fact that notable improvements have been made recently in the field of feature extraction and classification, human action recognition is still challenging, especially in images, in which, unlike videos, there is no motion. Thus, the methods proposed for recognizing human actions in videos cannot be applied to still images. A big challenge in action recognition in still images is the lack of large enough datasets, which is problematic for training deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) due to the overfitting issue. In this paper, by taking advantage of pre-trained CNNs, we employ the transfer learning technique to tackle the lack of massive labeled action recognition datasets. Furthermore, since the last layer of the CNN has class-specific information, we apply an attention mechanism on the output feature maps of the CNN to extract more discriminative and powerful features for classification of human actions. Moreover, we use eight different pre-trained CNNs in our framework and investigate their performance on Stanford 40 dataset. Finally, we propose using the Ensemble Learning technique to enhance the overall accuracy of action classification by combining the predictions of multiple models. The best setting of our method is able to achieve 93.17$\%$ accuracy on the Stanford 40 dataset.
This report describes the approach behind our winning solution to the 2022 Epic-Kitchens Action Recognition Challenge. Our approach builds upon our recent work, Multiview Transformer for Video Recognition (MTV), and adapts it to multimodal inputs. Our final submission consists of an ensemble of Multimodal MTV (M&M) models varying backbone sizes and input modalities. Our approach achieved 52.8% Top-1 accuracy on the test set in action classes, which is 4.1% higher than last year's winning entry.
In this paper, we proposed a effective but extensible residual one-dimensional convolution neural network as base network, based on the this network, we proposed four subnets to explore the features of skeleton sequences from each aspect. Given a skeleton sequences, the spatial information are encoded into the skeleton joints coordinate in a frame and the temporal information are present by multiple frames. Limited by the skeleton sequence representations, two-dimensional convolution neural network cannot be used directly, we chose one-dimensional convolution layer as the basic layer. Each sub…
Action recognition from still images is an important task of computer vision applications such as image annotation, robotic navigation, video surveillance and several others. Existing approaches mainly rely on either bag-of-feature representations or articulated body-part models. However, the relationship between the action and the image segments is still substantially unexplored. For this reason, in this paper we propose to approach action recognition by leveraging an intermediate layer of "superpixels" whose latent classes can act as attributes of the action. In the proposed approach, the ac…
Recognizing actions from still images is popularly studied recently. In this paper, we model an action class as a flexible number of spatial configurations of body parts by proposing a new spatial SPN (Sum-Product Networks). First, we discover a set of parts in image collections via unsupervised learning. Then, our new spatial SPN is applied to model the spatial relationship and also the high-order correlations of parts. To learn robust networks, we further develop a hierarchical spatial SPN method, which models pairwise spatial relationship between parts inside sub-images and models the corre…

In this work, we address the problem of learning an ensemble of specialist networks using multimodal data, while considering the realistic and challenging scenario of possible missing modalities at test time. Our goal is to leverage the complementary information of multiple modalities to the benefit of the ensemble and each individual network. We introduce a novel Distillation Multiple Choice Learning framework for multimodal data, where different modality networks learn in a cooperative setting from scratch, strengthening one another. The modality networks learned using our method achieve sig…
In this work, we address the problem how a network for action recognition that has been trained on a modality like RGB videos can be adapted to recognize actions for another modality like sequences of 3D human poses. To this end, we extract the knowledge of the trained teacher network for the source modality and transfer it to a small ensemble of student networks for the target modality. For the cross-modal knowledge distillation, we do not require any annotated data. Instead we use pairs of sequences of both modalities as supervision, which are straightforward to acquire. In contrast to previ…
Sign language is commonly used by deaf or mute people to communicate but requires extensive effort to master. It is usually performed with the fast yet delicate movement of hand gestures, body posture, and even facial expressions. Current Sign Language Recognition (SLR) methods usually extract features via deep neural networks and suffer overfitting due to limited and noisy data. Recently, skeleton-based action recognition has attracted increasing attention due to its subject-invariant and background-invariant nature, whereas skeleton-based SLR is still under exploration due to the lack of han…
Collaborative Representation Classification (CRC) for face recognition attracts a lot attention recently due to its good recognition performance and fast speed. Compared to Sparse Representation Classification (SRC), CRC achieves a comparable recognition performance with 10-1000 times faster speed. In this paper, we propose to ensemble several CRC models to promote the recognition rate, where each CRC model uses different and divergent randomly generated biologically-inspired features as the face representation. The proposed ensemble algorithm calculates an ensemble weight for each CRC model t…
An approach to lesion recognition is described that for lesion localization uses an ensemble of segmentation techniques and for lesion classification an exhaustive structural analysis. For localization, candidate regions are obtained from global thresholding of the chromatic maps and from applying the K-Means algorithm to the RGB image; the candidate regions are then integrated. For classification, a relatively exhaustive structural analysis of contours and regions is carried out.

Analysis of human affect plays a vital role in human-computer interaction (HCI) systems. Due to the difficulty in capturing large amounts of real-life data, most of the current methods have mainly focused on controlled environments, which limit their application scenarios. To tackle this problem, we propose our solution based on the ensemble learning method. Specifically, we formulate the problem as a classification task, and then train several expression classification models with different types of backbones--ResNet, EfficientNet and InceptionNet. After that, the outputs of several models ar…

Concatenation of the deep network representations extracted from different facial patches helps to improve face recognition performance. However, the concatenated facial template increases in size and contains redundant information. Previous solutions aim to reduce the dimensionality of the facial template without considering the occlusion pattern of the facial patches. In this paper, we propose an occlusion-guided compact template learning (OGCTL) approach that only uses the information from visible patches to construct the compact template. The compact face representation is not sensitive to…

An understanding and classification of driving scenarios are important for testing and development of autonomous driving functionalities. Machine learning models are useful for scenario classification but most of them assume that data received during the testing are from one of the classes used in the training. This assumption is not true always because of the open environment where vehicles operate. This is addressed by a new machine learning paradigm called open-set recognition. Open-set recognition is the problem of assigning test samples to one of the classes used in training or to an unkn…

The variation of pose, illumination and expression makes face recognition still a challenging problem. As a pre-processing in holistic approaches, faces are usually aligned by eyes. The proposed method tries to perform a pixel alignment rather than eye-alignment by mapping the geometry of faces to a reference face while keeping their own textures. The proposed geometry alignment not only creates a meaningful correspondence among every pixel of all faces, but also removes expression and pose variations effectively. The geometry alignment is performed pixel-wise, i.e., every pixel of the face is…

In this paper, we propose a comprehensive framework based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to overcome challenges in video-based face recognition (VFR). First, to learn blur-robust face representations, we artificially blur training data composed of clear still images to account for a shortfall in real-world video training data. Using training data composed of both still images and artificially blurred data, CNN is encouraged to learn blur-insensitive features automatically. S…

Wearing a face mask is one of the adjustments we had to follow to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. Having our faces covered by masks constantly has driven the need to understand and investigate how this behavior affects the recognition capability of face recognition systems. Current face recognition systems have extremely high accuracy when dealing with unconstrained general face recognition cases but do not generalize well with occluded masked faces. In this work, we propose a system for masked face recognition. The proposed system comprises two Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models …

Event cameras are bio-inspired sensors capable of providing a continuous stream of events with low latency and high dynamic range. As a single event only carries limited information about the brightness change at a particular pixel, events are commonly accumulated into spatio-temporal windows for further processing. However, the optimal window length varies depending on the scene, camera motion, the task being performed, and other factors. In this research, we develop a novel ensemble-based scheme for combining temporal windows of varying lengths that are processed in parallel. For application…

The problematic facial parts undermine the validity of the linear-subspace assumption and thus the recognition performance deteriorates significantly. In this work, we address the problem in a learning-inference-mixed fashion. By observing that the linear-subspace assumption is more reliable on certain face patches rather than on the holistic face, some Bayesian …
