This Perspective examines the emerging applications of photonic topological insulators (PTIs) in the microwave domain. The introduction of topological protection of light has revolutionized the traditional perspective of wave propagation through the demonstration of backscatter-free waveguides in the presence of sharp bending and strong structural defects. The pseudospin degree of freedom of light enables the invention of unprecedented topological photonic devices with useful functionalities. Our aim is to present a brief introduction of recent developments in microwave PTI demonstrations. We give a clear comparison of different PTI realizations, summarize the key features giving rise to topological protection, and present a discussion of advantages and disadvantages of PTI technology compared to existing microwave device technology. We conclude with forward-looking perspectives of how the advantages of this technology can best be exploited.
Extensive researches have revealed that valley, a binary degree of freedom (DOF), can be an excellent candidate of information carrier. Recently, valley DOF has been introduced into photonic systems, and several valley-Hall photonic topological insulators (PTIs) have been experimentally demonstrated. However, in the previous valley-Hall PTIs, topological kink states only work at a single frequency band, which limits potential applications in multiband waveguides, filters, communications, and so on. To overcome this challenge, here we experimentally demonstrate a valley-Hall PTI, where the topo…
We report a fully integrated microwave photonic passband filter on a silicon photonic chip. The on-chip integrated microwave photonic filter (IMPF) consists of a high-speed phase modulator (PM), a thermally tunable high-Q micro-disk resonator (MDR), and a high-speed photodetector (PD). The bandpass filtering function of the IMPF is implemented based on phase modulation and phase-modulation to intensity-modulation conversion, to translate the spectral response of an optical filter, which is the MDR in the IMPF, to the spectral response of a microwave filter. By injecting a CW light from a laser…

Microwave photonics is a remarkably powerful system for quantum simulation and technologies, but its integration in superconducting circuits, superior in many aspects, is constrained by the long wavelengths and impedance mismatches in this platform. We introduce a solution to these difficulties via compact networks of high-kinetic inductance microstrip waveguides and coupling wires with strongly reduced phase velocities. We demonstrate broadband capabilities for superconducting microwave photonics in terms of routing, emulation and generalized linear and nonlinear networks.

On the other hand, the maturity of high-volume semiconductor processing has finally enabled the complete integration of light sources, modulators, and detectors in a single microwave photonic p…
Microwave photonic systems are compelling for their ability to process signals at high frequencies and over extremely wide bandwidths as a basis for next generation communication and radar technologies. However, many applications also require narrow-band $(\sim\text{MHz})$ filtering operations that are challenging to implement using optical filtering techniques, as this requires reliable integration of ultra-high quality factor $(\sim 10^8)$ optical resonators. One way to address this challenge is to utilize long-lived acoustic resonances, taking advantage of their narrow-band frequency respon…

Microwave transmission measurements were performed for a three-dimensional (3D) layer-by-layer chiral photonic crystal (PhC), whose photonic band structure contains 3D singular points, Weyl points. For the frequency and wavevector in the vicinity of a Weyl point, the transmitted intensity was found to be inversely proportional to the square of the propagation length. In addition, the transmitted wave was well-collimated in the plane parallel to the PhC layers, even for point-source incidence. When a plane wave was incident on the PhC containing metal scatters, the planar wavefront was reconstr…
The phase synchronization of two semiconductor DFB lasers submitted to both frequency-shifted cross-injection and self-feedback is investigated, both numerically and experimentally. A dedicated setup based on monolithic DFB lasers permits to effectively lock the frequency difference of the two lasers on an external reference over a broad range of parameters. In agreement with a delayed rate equation model, it is shown that the sensitivity of the locking to the optical feedback phases is mitigated by using strong cross-injection, thus paving the way to applications for microwave photonics. The field of topological photonics was initiated with the realization of a Chern insulator phase in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal (PhC) with broken time-reversal symmetry (T), hosting chiral edge states that are topologically protected propagating modes. Recent advances in higher-order band topology have discovered another type of topological state, as manifested by those modes localized at the corners of a sample, which are known as corner states. Here we report the realization of a quadrupole higher-order topological insulator phase in a gyromagnetic PhC, induced by a topological phase tra…
Photonic topological insulators (PTIs) exhibit robust photonic edge states protected by band topology, similar to electronic edge states in topological band insulators. Standard band theory does not apply to amorphous phases of matter, which are formed by non-crystalline lattices with no long-range positional order but only short-range order. Among other interesting properties, amorphous media exhibit transitions between glassy and liquid phases, accompanied by dramatic changes in short-range order. Here, we experimentally investigate amorphous variants of a Chern-number-based PTI. By tuning t…

In this paper, we propose a low-noise, bandwidth tunable microwave photonics filter (MPF) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) losses. By suppressing the out-of-band signal with two broadened symmetric SBS losses, pass bandwidth can be tuned from 500 MHz to 10 GHz. Considering the limited interaction in the center frequency range, a flat-top response with 0.3 dB ripple is easily achieved. Unlike a SBS gain based filter, due to the transparency of the pass band in our proposed filter, hardly no noise is detected in a noise measurement against an obvious maximum 5 dB noise pedestal for…
