Topological photonics revolutionizes some of the traditional approaches to light propagation and manipulation, and it provides unprecedented means for developing novel photonic devices. Recently discovered higher-order topological phases go beyond the conventional bulk-edge correspondence for photonic crystals and introduce novel opportunities for topological protection. Here, we introduce an intelligent numerical approach for inverse design of higher-order photonic topological insulators with great flexibility for controlling both topological edge and topological corner states. In particular, we consider the second-order photonic topological insulator and design several structures supporting both edge and corner states at different frequencies. By carefully programming these structures, we suggest a novel approach for topological routing of the edge and corner states by changing the operational frequency. Our finding paves the way to integrated topological photonic devices with novel functionalities.

Two-dimensional photonic crystals made of six air holes on a core-shell dielectric material has been proposed to study the newly emerged photonic quantum spin Hall insulator. Specifically, radii modification of the air holes and core-shell without breaking time-reversal (TR) symmetry are supported by the C_6 point group symmetry upon a proposed scheme. It is shown that multiple topological transitions from an ordinary insulator with zero spin Chern number (Cs) to a topological insulator with a non-zero Cs can be achieved by modifying the geometry of the photonic structure. Studying the two cou…
Opto-mechanical interactions in planar photonic integrated circuits draw great interest in basic research and applications. However, opto-mechanics is practically absent in the most technologically significant photonics platform: silicon on insulator. Previous demonstrations required the under-etching and suspension of silicon structures. Here we present surface acoustic wave-photonic devices in silicon on insulator, up to 8 GHz frequency. Surface waves are launched through absorption of modulated pump light in metallic gratings and thermoelastic expansion. The surface waves are detected throu…
In this work, we investigate a two dimensional honeycomb photonic crystal (2D HPC) with C_6 symmetry point group, which is known to demonstrate a double Dirac cone at k=0 of the Brillion zone. Then we design two deformed PCs from the original one, by modifying the radius of the cylinders from the unit cell center in which the symmetry C_6 is reduced to the C_3\u{psion} group and new structure exhibits the photonic topological edge states. Consequently, the topologically protected propagation of the edge states with back scattering-immune feature is observed along the interfaces of the two defo…

The field of topological photonics was initiated with the realization of a Chern insulator phase in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal (PhC) with broken time-reversal symmetry (T), hosting chiral edge states that are topologically protected propagating modes. Recent advances in higher-order band topology have discovered another type of topological state, as manifested by those modes localized at the corners of a sample, which are known as corner states. Here we report the realization of a quadrupole higher-order topological insulator phase in a gyromagnetic PhC, induced by a topological phase tra…
Pseudo-spin and valley degrees of freedom (DOFs) engineered in photonic analogues of topological insulators (TI) provide potential approaches to optical encoding and robust signal transport. Here we observe a ballistic edge state whose spin-valley indices are locked to the direction of propagation along the interface between a valley photonic crystal and a metacrystal emulating the quantum spin Hall effect. We demonstrate the inhibition of inter-valley scattering at a Y-junction formed at the interfaces between photonic TIs carrying different spin-valley Chern numbers. These results open up th…
Lithium Niobate on insulator (LNOI) photonics promises to combine the excellent nonlinear properties of Lithium Niobate with the high complexity achievable by high contrast waveguides. However, to date, fabrication challenges have resulted in high-loss and sidewall-angled waveguides, limiting its applicability. We report LNOI single mode waveguides with ultra low propagation loss of 0.4 dB/cm and sidewall angle of 75°. Our results open the route to a highly efficient photonic platform with applications ranging from high-speed telecommunication to quantum technology.
Extensive researches have revealed that valley, a binary degree of freedom (DOF), can be an excellent candidate of information carrier. Recently, valley DOF has been introduced into photonic systems, and several valley-Hall photonic topological insulators (PTIs) have been experimentally demonstrated. However, in the previous valley-Hall PTIs, topological kink states only work at a single frequency band, which limits potential applications in multiband waveguides, filters, communications, and so on. To overcome this challenge, here we experimentally demonstrate a valley-Hall PTI, where the topo…

Photonic topological insulators (PTIs) exhibit robust photonic edge states protected by band topology, similar to electronic edge states in topological band insulators. Standard band theory does not apply to amorphous phases of matter, which are formed by non-crystalline lattices with no long-range positional order but only short-range order. Among other interesting properties, amorphous media exhibit transitions between glassy and liquid phases, accompanied by dramatic changes in short-range order. Here, we experimentally investigate amorphous variants of a Chern-number-based PTI. By tuning t…
Topological photonics has revolutionized our understanding of light propagation, but most of current studies are focused on designing a static photonic structure. Developing a dynamic photonic topological platform to switch multiple topological functionalities at ultrafast speed is still a great challenge. Here we demonstrate an ultrafast reprogrammable plasmonic topological insulator, where the topological propagation route can be dynamically steered at nanosecond-level switching time, namely more than 10^7 times faster than the current state-of-the-art. This orders-of-magnitude improvement i…
Perturbations to the effective refractive index from nanometer-scale fabrication variations in waveguide geometry plague high index-contrast photonic platforms including the ubiquitous sub-micron silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process. Such variations are particularly troublesome for phase-sensitive devices such as interferometers and resonators, which exhibit drastic changes in performance as a result of these fabrication-induced phase errors. In this Letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a design methodology for dramatically reducing device sensitivity to silicon width variations. We…
Photonic and acoustic topological insulators exhibiting one-way transportation that is robust against defects and impurities are typically realized in coupled arrays of two-dimensional ring resonators. These systems have produced a series of applications, including optical isolators, delay lines, and lasers. However, the structures are complicated because an additional coupler ring between neighboring rings is needed to construct photonic pseudo-spin. In this work, a photonic analogue of the quantum spin Hall effect is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in an anomalous Floquet topologica…

In view of these properties, AlGaAs is a promising candidate for integrated photonics, including both linear and nonlinear devices, passive and active devices, and associated applications. For integrated photonics low propagation loss is essential, particularly in nonlinear applications. However, achieving low-loss and high-confinement AlGaAs photonic integrated circuits poses a challenge. Here we show a…
We propose a route towards creating a metamaterial that behaves as a photonic Chern insulator, through homogenization of an array of gyromagnetic cylinders. We show that such an array can exhibit non-trivial topological effects, including topologically non-trivial band gaps and one-way edge states, when it can be homogenized to an effective medium model that has the Berry curvature strongly peaked at the wavevector k=0. The non-trivial band topology depends only on the parameters of the cylinders and the cylinders' density, and can be realized in a wide variety of different lattices including …

Photonic topological states have revolutionized our understanding on the propagation and scattering of light. Recent discovery of higher-order photonic topological insulators opens an emergent horizon for zero-dimensional topological corner states. However, the previous realizations of higher-order photonic topological insulators suffer from either a limited operational frequency range due to the lumped components involved or a bulky structure with a large footprint, which are unfavorable for future integrated photonics. To overcome these limitations, we hereby experimentally demonstrate a pla…
We experimentally demonstrate a broadband, fabrication tolerant, CMOS compatible compact silicon waveguide taper (34.2 um) in silicon-on-insulator wire waveguides. The taper works on multi-mode interference along the length of the taper. A single taper design has a broadband operation with coupling efficiency >70% over 700 nm that can be used in O, C and L-band. The compact taper is highly tolerant to fabrication variations; >100 nm change in the taper and end waveguide width varies the taper transmission by <5%. The footprint of the device i.e. taper along with the linear gratings is ~ 442 m2…
Silicon photonics is becoming a leading technology in photonics, displacing traditional fiber optic transceivers in long-haul and intra-data-center links and enabling new applications such as solid-state LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and optical machine learning. Further improving the density and performance of silicon photonics, however, has been challenging, due to the large size and limited performance of traditional semi-analytically designed components. Automated optimization of photonic devices using inverse design is a promising path forward but has until now faced difficulties in…
The ability of photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) to confine and slow down light makes them an ideal component to enhance the performance of various photonic devices, such as optical modulators or sensors. However, the integration of PCWs in photonic applications poses design challenges, most notably, engineering the PCW mode dispersion and creating efficient coupling devices. Here, we solve these challenges with photonic inverse design, and experimentally demonstrate a slow-light PCW optical phased array (OPA) with a wide steering range. Even and odd mode PCWs are engineered for a group index…
Efficient light coupling into integrated photonic devices is of key importance to a wide variety of applications. "Inverse nanotapers" are widely used, in which the waveguide width is reduced to match an incident mode. Here, we demonstrate novel, "double inverse" tapers, in which we taper both the waveguide height, as well as the width. We demonstrate that in comparison to regular inverse tapers, the double inverse tapers have excellent polarization-independent coupling. In addition, the optimum coupling is achieved with much larger taper dimension, enabling the use of photolithography instead…
Understanding the nature of light transmission and the photonic bandgap in inverse opal photonic crystals is essential for linking their optical characteristics to any application. We examined TiO2 and SnO2 IOs in a range of common solvents to solve the conflict between Bragg-Snell theory, optical and physical measurements by a comprehensive angle-resolved light transmission study coupled to microscopy examination of the IO structure. Tuning the position of the photonic bandgap and index contrast by solvent…
Diamond hosts optically active color centers with great promise in quantum computation, networking, and sensing. Realization of such applications is contingent upon the integration of color centers into photonic circuits. However, current diamond quantum optics experiments are restricted to single devices and few quantum emitters because fabrication constraints limit device functionalities, thus precluding color center integrated photonic circuits. In this work, we utilize inverse design methods to overcome constraints of cutting-edge diamond nanofabrication methods and fabricate compact and r…
GeSn alloys have been regarded as a potential lasing material for a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible light source. Despite their remarkable progress, all GeSn lasers reported to date have large device footprints and active areas, which prevent the realization of densely integrated on-chip lasers operating at low power consumption. Here, we present a 1D photonic crystal (PC) nanobeam with a very small device footprint of 7 $μm^2$ and a compact active area of ~1.2 $μm^2$ on a high-quality GeSn-on-insulator (GeSnOI) substrate. We also report that the improved directness i…
A Cm planar photonic material (two-dimensional) including the mirror reflection symmetry is explored where in the Dirac cones appeared at the high-symmetry points of the Brillouin zone boundary. By implementing the specific perturbation on the photonic crystal (PC), topological transition can make a bridge between the trivial PC (ordinary insulator) and the topological insulator including zero and non-zero spin Chern number (Cs), respectively. The perturbation can be realized through the rotation of the Cm photonic crystal around the nonzero angle to its initial position. Therefore, breaking t…
