By harnessing quantum superposition and entanglement, remarkable progress has sprouted over the past three decades from different areas of research in communication computation and simulation. To further improve the processing ability of microwave pho-tonics, here, we have demonstrated a quantum microwave photonic processing system using a low jitter superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD) and a time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) module. This method uniquely combines extreme optical sensitivity, down to a single-photon level (below -100 dBm), and wide processing bandwidth, twice higher than the transmission bandwidth of the cable. Moreover, benefitted from the trigger, the system can selectively process the desired RF signal and attenuates the other in-tense noise and undesired RF components even the power is 15dB greater than the desired signal power. Using this method we show microwave phase shifting and frequency filtering for the desired RF signal on the single-photon level. Besides its applications in space and under-water communications and testing and qualification of pre-packaged photonic modulators and detectors. This RF signal processing capability at the single-photon level can lead to significant development in the high-speed quantum processing method.
With energy-time entangled biphoton sources as the optical carrier and time-correlated single-photon detection for high-speed radio frequency (RF) signal recovery, the method of quantum microwave photonics (QMWP) has presented the unprecedented potential of nonlocal RF signal encoding and efficient RF signal distilling from the dispersion interference associated with ultrashort pulse carriers. In this letter, its capability in microwave signal processing and prospective superiority is further demonstrated. Both the QMWP RF phase shifting and transversal filtering functionality, which are the f…

Microwave photonics is a remarkably powerful system for quantum simulation and technologies, but its integration in superconducting circuits, superior in many aspects, is constrained by the long wavelengths and impedance mismatches in this platform. We introduce a solution to these difficulties via compact networks of high-kinetic inductance microstrip waveguides and coupling wires with strongly reduced phase velocities. We demonstrate broadband capabilities for superconducting microwave photonics in terms of routing, emulation and generalized linear and nonlinear networks.
Recent advances in photonic integration have propelled microwave photonic technologies to new heights. The ability to interface hybrid material platforms to enhance light-matter interactions has led to the developments of ultra-small and high-bandwidth electro-optic modulators, frequency synthesizers with the lowest noise, and chip signal processors with orders-of-magnitude enhanced spectral resolution. On the other hand, the maturity of high-volume semiconductor processing has finally enabled the complete integration of light sources, modulators, and detectors in a single microwave photonic p…
Microwave photonic systems are compelling for their ability to process signals at high frequencies and over extremely wide bandwidths as a basis for next generation communication and radar technologies. However, many applications also require narrow-band $(\sim\text{MHz})$ filtering operations that are challenging to implement using optical filtering techniques, as this requires reliable integration of ultra-high quality factor $(\sim 10^8)$ optical resonators. One way to address this challenge is to utilize long-lived acoustic resonances, taking advantage of their narrow-band frequency respon…
Microwave photonics (MWP) studies the interaction between microwave and optical waves for the generation, transmission and processing of microwave signals (i.e., three key domains), taking advantages of broad bandwidth and low loss offered by modern photonics. Integrated MWP using photonic integrated circuits (PICs) can reach a compact, reliable and green implementation. Most PICs, however, are recently developed to perform one or more functions restricted inside a single domain. In this paper, as highly desired, a multifunctional PIC is proposed to cover the three key domains. The PIC is fabr…

Microwave transmission measurements were performed for a three-dimensional (3D) layer-by-layer chiral photonic crystal (PhC), whose photonic band structure contains 3D singular points, Weyl points. For the frequency and wavevector in the vicinity of a Weyl point, the transmitted intensity was found to be inversely proportional to the square of the propagation length. In addition, the transmitted wave was well-collimated in the plane parallel to the PhC layers, even for point-source incidence. When a plane wave was incident on the PhC containing metal scatters, the planar wavefront was reconstr…
The phase synchronization of two semiconductor DFB lasers submitted to both frequency-shifted cross-injection and self-feedback is investigated, both numerically and experimentally. A dedicated setup based on monolithic DFB lasers permits to effectively lock the frequency difference of the two lasers on an external reference over a broad range of parameters. In agreement with a delayed rate equation model, it is shown that the sensitivity of the locking to the optical feedback phases is mitigated by using strong cross-injection, thus paving the way to applications for microwave photonics. Othe…

We report a fully integrated microwave photonic passband filter on a silicon photonic chip. The on-chip integrated microwave photonic filter (IMPF) consists of a high-speed phase modulator (PM), a thermally tunable high-Q micro-disk resonator (MDR), and a high-speed photodetector (PD). The bandpass filtering function of the IMPF is implemented based on phase modulation and phase-modulation to intensity-modulation conversion, to translate the spectral response of an optical filter, which is the MDR in the IMPF, to the spectral response of a microwave filter. Optomechanical (OM) cavities enable coupling of near-infrared light and GHz-frequency acoustic waves in wavelength-scale volumes. When driven in the phonon lasing regime, an OM cavity can perform simultaneously as a nonlinear mixer and a local oscillator -- at integer multiples of the mechanical resonance frequency -- in the optical domain. In this work, we use this property to demonstrate all-optical frequency down- and up-conversion of MHz-bandwidth orthogonal frequency division multiplexed signals compliant with the IEEE 802.16e WiMAX wireless standard at microwave frequencies. To this end,…
In this paper, we propose a low-noise, bandwidth tunable microwave photonics filter (MPF) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) losses. By suppressing the out-of-band signal with two broadened symmetric SBS losses, pass bandwidth can be tuned from 500 MHz to 10 GHz. Considering the limited interaction in the center frequency range, a flat-top response with 0.3 dB ripple is easily achieved. Unlike a SBS gain based filter, due to the transparency of the pass band in our proposed filter, hardly no noise is detected in a noise measurement against an obvious maximum 5 dB noise pedestal for…

Ising machines based on analog systems have the potential of acceleration in solving ubiquitous combinatorial optimization problems. Although some artificial spins to support large-scale Ising machine is reported, e.g. superconducting qubits in quantum annealers and short optical pulses in coherent Ising machines, the spin coherence is fragile due to the ultra-low equivalent temperature or optical phase sensitivity. In this paper, we propose to use short microwave pulses generated from an optoelectronic parametric oscillator as the spins to implement the Ising machine with large scale and also…
