The spin Seebeck effect (SSE) has generated interest in the thermoelectric and magnetic communities for potential high efficiency energy harvesting applications, and spintronic communities as a source of pure spin current. To understand the underlying mechanisms requires characterisation of potential materials across a range of temperatures, however, for thin films the default measurement of an applied temperature gradient (across the sample) has been shown to be compromised by the presence of thermal resistances. Here, we demonstrate a method to perform low temperature SSE measurements where instead of monitoring the temperature gradient, the heat flux passing through the sample is measured using two calibrated heat flux sensors. This has the advantage of measuring the heat loss through the sample as well as providing a reliable method to normalise the SSE response of thin film samples. We demonstrate this method with an $\text{SiO}_{2}/\text{Fe}_{3}O_{4}/\text{Pt}$ sample, where a semiconducting-insulating transition occurs at the Verwey transition, $T_{\text{V}}$, of $\text{Fe}_{3}\text{O}_{4}$ and quantify the thermomagnetic response above and below $T_{\text{V}}$.
The influence of size effects on the thermoelectric properties of thin platinum films is investigated and compared to the bulk. Structural properties, like the film thickness and the grain size, are varied. We correlate the electron mean free path with the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity and the absolute Seebeck coefficient $S_{\text{Pt}}$ of platinum. We use a measurement platform as a standardized method to determine $S_{\text{Pt}}$ and show that $S_{\text{Pt,film}}$ is reduced compared to $S_{\text{Pt,bulk}}$. Boundary and surface scattering reduce the thermodiffusion …
Whilst there have been several reports of the spin Seebeck effect to date, comparison of the absolute voltage(s) measured, in particular for thin films, is limited. In this letter we demonstrate normalization of the spin Seebeck effect for Fe$_3$O$_4$:Pt thin film and YIG:Pt bulk samples with respect to the heat flux J$_q$, and temperature difference $Δ$T. We demonstrate that the standard normalization procedures for these measurements do not account for an unexpected scaling of the measured voltage with area that is observed in both bulk and thin film. Finally, we present an alternative spin …
We evaluated the thermoelectric properties of longitudinal spin Seebeck devices by using ten different transition metals (TMs). Both the intensity and sign of spin Seebeck coefficients were noticeably dependent on the degree of the inverse spin Hall effect and the resistivity of each TM film. Spin dependent behaviors were also observed under ferromagnetic resonance. These results indicate that the output of the spin Seebeck devices originates in the spin current.
Transverse magneto-thermoelectric effects are studied in permalloy thin films grown on MgO and GaAs substrates and compared to those grown on suspended SiN membranes. The transverse voltage along platinum strips patterned on top of the permalloy films is measured vs. the external magnetic field as a function of angle and temperature gradient. After the identification of the contribution of the planar and anomalous Nernst effects, we find an upper limit for the transverse spin Seebeck effect, which is several orders of magnitude smaller than previously reported.
The spin-Seebeck effect mediated thermoelectric energy conversion can provide efficient alternative to traditional thermoelectrics for waste heat recovery. To achieve this goal, efficient spin to charge conversion using earth-abundant materials is essential. Proximity induced Rashba effect arises from the charge potential mediated by structural inversion asymmetry, which has been reported in Si thin films and can be manipulated by controlling the thickness of Rashba layer. We demonstrate a giant Rashba spin-Seebeck effect in NiFe/p-Si (polycrystalline) bilayer thin films. The bilayer thin film…
We found a giant Seebeck effect in semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films, which exhibited a performance comparable to that of commercial Bi2Te3 alloys. Carrier doping of semiconducting SWCNT films further improved the thermoelectric performance. These results were reproduced well by first-principles transport simulations based on a simple SWCNT junction model. These findings suggest strategies that pave the way for emerging printed, all-carbon, flexible thermoelectric devices.
A non-uniform temperature profile may generate a pure spin current in magnetic films, as observed for instance in the spin Seebeck effect. In addition, thermally induced elastic deformations may set in that could affect the spin current. A self-consistent theory of the magnonic spin Seebeck effect including thermally activated magneto-elastic effects is presented and analytical expressions for the thermally activated deformation tensor and dispersion relations for coupled magneto-elastic modes are obtained. We derived analytical results for bulk (3D) systems and thin magnetic (2D) films. We ob…
We have developed a vectorial type of measurement for the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in epitaxial NiFe$_2$O$_4$ thin films which have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on MgGa$_2$O$_4$ (MGO) with (001) and (011) orientation as well as CoGa$_2$O$_4$ (011) (CGO), thus varying the lattice mismatch and crystal orientation. We confirm that a large lattice mismatch leads to strain anisotropy in addition to the magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the thin films using vibrating sample magnetometry and ferromagnetic resonance measurements. Moreover, we show that the existence of a magnetic strain aniso…
We studied the transient behavior of the spin current generated by the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) in a set of platinum-coated yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films of different thicknesses. The LSSE was induced by means of pulsed microwave heating of the Pt layer and the spin currents were measured electrically using the inverse spin Hall effect in the same layer. We demonstrate that the time evolution of the LSSE is determined by the evolution of the thermal gradient triggering the flux of thermal magnons in the vicinity of the YIG/Pt interface. These magnons move ballistically within …
Measuring spin currents and spin accumulations is challenging. This is mainly because of their small size and the lack of a standard spin detector comparable to conventional ampere meters or voltage detectors. It is all the more pleasing to hear about new methods for detecting spin currents and spin accumulations. A recent example is the paper of McLaughlin et al. [Phys. Rev. B 95, 180401 (2017)], who report novel measurements of the transverse spin-Seebeck effect (TSSE) in metals by optical means using a Sagnac interferometer microscope. However, because no standard procedures or reference me…
The determination of the magnon diffusion length (MDL) is important for increasing the efficiency of spin Seebeck effect (SSE) based devices utilising non-metallic magnets. We extract the MDL at $50$ and $300\,\rm{K}$ in an $\rm{Fe}_{3}\rm{O}_{4}$ single crystal from the magnon dispersion obtained using inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and find them to be equal within error. We then measure the heat flux normalised SSE responses and in-plane magnetization of $\rm{Fe}_{3}\rm{O}_{4}$ thin films and normalise by the static magnetization contribution to the SSE before determining the MDLs from a…
We experimentally study the transient voltage response of yttrium iron garnet/platinum bilayer samples subject to periodic heating up to gigahertz frequencies. We observe an intrinsic cutoff frequency of the induced thermopower voltage, which characteristically depends on the thickness of the yttrium iron garnet film. The cutoff frequency reaches values of up to 350 MHz in a 50 nm thick yttrium iron garnet film, but drops to below 1 MHz for several-micrometer-thick films. These data corroborate the notion that the magnon spectrum responsible for the spin current emission in the spin Seebeck ef…
The temperature dependent longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in heavy metal (HM)/ Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) bilayers is investigated as a function of different magnetic field strength, different HM detection material, and YIG thickness ranging from nm to mm. A large enhancement of the SSE signal is observed at low temperatures leading to a peak of the signal amplitude. We demonstrate that this enhancement shows a clear dependence on the film thickness, being more pronounced for thicker films and vanishing for films thinner than 600 nm. The peak temperature depends on the applied magnetic field streng…
We report the observation of longitudinal spin Seebeck effects (LSSE) in an all-oxide bilayer system comprising an IrO$_2$ film and an Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ film. Spin currents generated by a temperature gradient across the IrO$_2$/Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ interface were detected as electric voltage via the inverse spin Hall effect in the conductive IrO$_2$ layer. This electric voltage is proportional to the magnitude of the temperature gradient and its magnetic field dependence is well consistent with the characteristic of the LSSE. This demonstration may lead to the realization of low-cost, stable,…
The impact of the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) on the magnon damping in magnetic-insulator/nonmagnetic-metal bilayers was recently discussed in several reports. However, results of those experiments can be blurred by multimode excitation within the measured linewidth. In order to avoid possible intermodal interference, we investigated the damping of a single magnon group in a platinum covered Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) film by measurement of the threshold of its parametric excitation. Both dipolar and exchange spin-wave branches were probed. It turned out that the LSSE-related modifi…
We calculate the phonon, electron and magnon temperature profiles in yttrium iron garnet/platinum bilayers by diffusive theory with appropriate boundary conditions, in particular taking into account interfacial thermal resistances. Our calculations show that in thin film hybrids, the interface magnetic heat conductance qualitatively affects the magnon temperature. Based on published material parameters we assess the degree of non-equilibrium at the yttrium iron garnet/platinum interface. The magnitude of the spin Seebeck effect derived from this approach compares well with experimental results…
In this Letter, we present the results of transient thermopower experiments, performed at room temperature on yttrium iron garnet/platinum bilayers. Upon application of a time-varying thermal gradient, we observe a characteristic low-pass frequency response of the ensuing thermopower voltage with cutoff frequencies of up to 37 MHz. We interpret our results in terms of the spin Seebeck effect, and argue that small wavevector magnons are of minor importance for the spin Seebeck effect in our thin film hybrid structures.
Based on the relaxation time approximation, the mean collision time for magnon scattering $τ_c(T)$ is computed from the experimental spin Seebeck coefficient of a bulk YIG / Pt bilayer. The scattering results to be composed by two processes: the low temperature one, with a $T^{-1/2}$ dependence, is attributed to the scattering by defects and provides a mean free path around 10 $μ$m; the high temperature one, depending on $T^{-4}$, is associated to the scattering by other magnons. The results are employed to predict the thickness dependence of the spin Seebeck coefficient for thin films.
Spin current injection from sputtered yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films into an adjacent platinum layer has been investigated by means of the spin pumping and the spin Seebeck effects. Films with a thickness of 83 and 96 nanometers were fabricated by on-axis magnetron rf sputtering at room temperature and subsequent post-annealing. From the frequency dependence of the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth, the damping constant has been estimated to be $(7.0\pm1.0)\times 10^{-4}$. Magnitudes of the spin current generated by the spin pumping and the spin Seebeck effect are of the same order as values …
Thermal-bias-induced spin angular momentum transfer between a paramagnetic metal and ferromagnetic insulator is studied theoretically based on the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) phenomenology. Magnons in the ferromagnet establish a nonequilibrium steady state by equilibrating with phonons via bulk Gilbert damping and electrons in the paramagnet via spin pumping, according to the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Subthermal magnons and the associated spin currents are treated classically, while the appropriate quantum crossover is imposed on high-frequency magnetic fluctuations. We ide…
Magnon-polarons are coherently mixed quasiparticles that originate from the strong magnetoelastic coupling of lattice vibrations and spin waves in magnetic-ordered materials. Recently, magnon-polarons have attracted a lot of attention since they provide a powerful tool to manipulate magnons, which is essential for magnon-based spintronic devices. In this work, we report the experimental observation of facet-dependent magnon-polarons in epitaxial ferrimagnetic Fe3O4 thin films via spin Seebeck effect measurement. The critical magnetic fields for the magnon-polarons in the (110)- and (100)-orien…
We investigate spin transport by thermally excited spin waves in an antiferromagnetic insulator. Starting from a stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert phenomenology, we obtain the out-of-equilibrium spin-wave properties. In linear response to spin biasing and a temperature gradient, we compute the spin transport through a normal metal$|$antiferromagnet$|$normal metal heterostructure. We show that the spin conductance diverges as one approaches the spin-flop transition; this enhancement of the conductance should be readily observable by sweeping the magnetic field across the spin-flop transition. …
We study the spin transport theoretically in heterostructures consisting of a ferromagnetic metallic thin film sandwiched between heavy-metal and oxide layers. The spin current in the heavy metal layer is generated via the spin Hall effect, while the oxide layer induces at the interface with the ferromagnetic layer a spin-orbital coupling of the Rashba type. Impact of the spin Hall effect and Rashba spin-orbit coupling on the spin Seebeck current is explored with a particular emphasis on nonlinear effects. Technically, we employ the Fokker-Planck approach and contrast the analytical expression…
The origin of the suppression of the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect by applied magnetic fields is studied. We perform numerical simulations of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation of motion for an atomistic spin model and calculate the magnon accumulation in linear temperature gradients for different strengths of applied magnetic fields and different length scales of the temperature gradient. We observe a decrease of the magnon accumulation with increasing magnetic field and we reveal that the origin of this effect is a field dependent change of the frequency distribution of the p…
We have studied the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect in a polar antiferromagnet $α$-Cu$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{7}$ in contact with a Pt film. Below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of $α$-Cu$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{7}$, spin Seebeck voltages whose magnetic field dependence is similar to that reported in antiferromagnetic MnF$_{2}$$\mid$Pt bilayers are observed. Though a small weak-ferromagnetic moment appears owing to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in $α$-Cu$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{7}$, the magnetic field dependence of spin Seebeck voltages is found to be irrelevant to the weak ferromagnetic moment…
Spin-momentum locking in protected surface states enables efficient electrical detection of magnon decay at a magnetic-insulator/topological-insulator heterojunction. Here we demonstrate this property using the spin Seebeck effect, i.e. measuring the transverse thermoelectric response to a temperature gradient across a thin film of yttrium iron garnet, an insulating ferrimagnet, and forming a heterojunction with (BixSb1-x)2Te3, a topological insulator. The non-equilibrium magnon population established at the interface can decay in part by interactions of magnons with electrons near the Fermi e…
We report on the observation of the spin Seebeck effect in antiferromagnetic MnF$_2$. A device scale on-chip heater is deposited on a bilayer of Pt (4 nm)/MnF$_2$ (110) (30 nm) grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a MgF$_2$ (110) substrate. Using Pt as a spin detector layer it is possible to measure thermally generated spin current from MnF$_2$ through the inverse spin Hall effect. The low temperature (2 - 80 K) and high magnetic field (up to 140 kOe) regime is explored. A clear spin flop transition corresponding to the sudden rotation of antiferromagnetic spins out of the easy axis is observed …
Nanoscale structuring holds promise to improve thermoelectric properties of materials for energy conversion and photodetection. We report a study of the spatial distribution of the photothermoelectric voltage in thin-film nanowire devices fabricated from single metal. A focused laser beam is used to locally heat the metal nanostructure via a combination of direct absorption and excitation of a plasmon resonance in Au devices. As seen previously, in nanowires shorter than the spot size of the laser, we observe a thermoelectric voltage distribution that is consistent with the local Seebeck coeff…
A model of charge hopping transport that accounts for anisotropy of localized states and Coulomb interaction between charges is proposed. For the anisotropic localized states the degree of orientation relates exponentially to the ratio of conductivities in parallel and perpendicular directions, while the ratio of Seebeck coefficients stays nearly unaffected. However, the ratio of Seebeck coefficients increases if Coulomb interaction is screened stronger in a direction parallel to the predominant orientation of the localized states. This implies two different physical mechanisms responsible for…
We have studied thermally driven magnon spin transport (spin Seebeck effect, SSE) in heterostructures of antiferromagnetic $α$-$\mathrm{Cr_2O_3}$ and Pt at low temperatures. Monitoring the amplitude of the local and nonlocal SSE signals as a function of temperature, we found that both decrease with increasing temperature and disappear above 100 K and 20 K, respectively. Additionally, both SSE signals show a tendency to saturate at low temperatures. The nonlocal SSE signal decays exponentially for intermediate injector-detector separation, consistent with magnon spin current transport in the re…
Understanding the transfer of spin angular momentum is essential in modern magnetism research. A model case is the generation of magnons in magnetic insulators by heating an adjacent metal film. Here, we reveal the initial steps of this spin Seebeck effect with <27fs time resolution using terahertz spectroscopy on bilayers of ferrimagnetic yttrium-iron garnet and platinum. Upon exciting the metal with an infrared laser pulse, a spin Seebeck current $j_\textrm{s}$ arises on the same ~100fs time scale on which the metal electrons thermalize. This observation highlights that efficient spin transf…
Spin transport of magnonic excitations in uniaxial insulating antiferromagnets (AFs) is investigated. In linear response to spin biasing and a temperature gradient, the spin transport properties of normal-metal--insulating antiferromagnet--normal-metal heterostructures are calculated. We focus on the thick-film regime, where the AF is thicker than the magnon equilibration length. This regime allows the use of a drift-diffusion approach, which is opposed to the thin-film limit considered by Bender {\it et al.} 2017, where a stochastic approach is justified. We obtain the temperature- and thickn…
We identify and investigate thermal spin transport phenomena in sputter-deposited Pt/NiFe$_2$O$_{\textrm{4-x}}$ ($4\geq x \geq 0$) bilayers. We separate the voltage generated by the spin Seebeck effect from the anomalous Nernst effect contributions and even disentangle the intrinsic anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in the ferromagnet (FM) from the ANE produced by the Pt that is spin polarized due to its proximity to the FM. Further, we probe the dependence of these effects on the electrical conductivity and the band gap energy of the FM film varying from nearly insulating NiFe$_2$O$_4$ to metalli…
We report a theory for the coherent and incoherent chiral pumping of spin waves into thin magnetic films through the dipolar coupling with a local magnetic transducer, such as a nanowire. The ferromagnetic resonance of the nanowire is broadened by the injection of unidirectional spin waves that generate a non-equilibrium magnetization in only half of the film. A temperature gradient between the local magnet and film leads to a unidirectional flow of incoherent magnons, i.e., a chiral spin Seebeck effect.
We present a study of the morphology and the thermoelectric properties of short-pulse laser-sintered (LS) nanoparticle (NP) thin films, consisting of SiGe alloy NPs or composites of Si and Ge NPs. Laser-sintering of spin-coated NP films in vacuum results in a macroporous percolating network with a typical thickness of 300 nm. The Seebeck coefficient is independent of the sintering process and typical for degenerate doping. The electrical conductivity of LS films rises with increasing temperature, best described by a power-law and influenced by two-dimensional percolation effects.
Thermoelectric materials intrigue much interest due to their wide range of application such as power generators and refrigerators. The efficiency of thermoelectric materials is quantified by the figure of merit, and a figure greater than unity is desired. To achieve this, a large Seebeck coefficient and low phonon thermal conductivity are required. We show that this can be achieved with a thin film of topological nodal line semimetals. We also discusses the correlation effect and spin current induced by a temperature gradient. The obtained results provide insight for the improvement of thermoe…
Transverse magneto-thermoelectric effects are studied in permalloy thin films grown on MgO substrates. We find that small parasitic magnetic fields below 1 Oe can produce artifacts of the order of 1 % of the amplitude of the anisotropic magneto-thermopower which is also detected in the experiments. The measured artifacts reveal a new source of uncertainties for the detection of the transverse spin Seebeck effect. Taking these results into account we conclude that the contribution of the transverse spin Seebeck effect to the detected voltages is below the noise level of 20 nV.
We present measurements of thermal and electrical spin injection in nanoscale metallic non-local spin valve (NLSV) structures. Informed by measurements of the Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity of representative films made using a micromachined Si-N thermal isolation platform, we use simple analytical and finite element thermal models to determine limits on the thermal gradient driving thermal spin injection and calculate the spin dependent Seebeck coefficient to be $-0.5\ μ\mathrm{V}/\mathrm{K}< S_{s}<-1.3\ μ\mathrm{V}/\mathrm{K}$. This is comparable in terms of the fraction of the …
The nonlocal transport of thermally generated magnons not only unveils the underlying mechanism of the spin Seebeck effect, but also allows for the extraction of the magnon relaxation length ($λ_m$) in a magnetic material, the average distance over which thermal magnons can propagate. In this study, we experimentally explore in yttrium iron garnet (YIG)/platinum systems much further ranges compared with previous investigations. We observe that the nonlocal SSE signals at long distances ($d$) clearly deviate from a typical exponential decay. Instead, they can be dominated by the nonlocal genera…
We report transport studies on (Bi,Sb)2Te3 topological insulator thin films with tunable electronic band structure. We find a doping and temperature regime in which the Hall coefficient is negative indicative of electron-type carriers, whereas the Seebeck coefficient is positive indicative of hole-type carriers. This sign anomaly is due to the distinct transport behaviors of the bulk and surface states: the surface Dirac fermions dominate magnetoelectric transport while the thermoelectric effect is mainly determined by the bulk states. These findings may inspire new ideas for designing topolog…
The longitudinal spin Seebeck effect is detected in sputter-deposited NiFe2O4 films using Pt as a spin detector and compared to previously investigated NiFe2O4 films prepared by chemical vapor deposition. Anomalous Nernst effects induced by the magnetic proximity effect in Pt can be excluded for the sputter-deposited NiFe2O4 films down to a certain limit, since x-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity measurements show no magnetic response down to a limit of 0.04 μB per Pt atom comparable to the case of the chemicallydeposited NiFe2O4 films. These differently prepared films have various thicknesse…
We study the transverse spin-Seebeck effect (SSE) on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) thin film, such as Bi$_2$Se$_3$, which is sandwiched between two normal metal leads. The temperature bias $ΔT$ applied between the leads generates surface charge current which becomes spin-polarized due to strong spin-orbit coupling on the TI surface, with polarization vector acquiring a component $P_x \simeq 60%$ {\em parallel to the direction of transport}. When the third nonmagnetic voltage probe is attached to the portion of the TI surface across its width $L_y$, pure spin cur…
We report a robust anomalous Nernst effect in Co2MnGa thin films in the thickness regime between 20 and 50 nm. The anomalous Nernst coefficient varied in the range of -2.0 to -3.0 uV/K at 300 K. We demonstrate that the anomalous Hall and Nernst coefficients exhibit similar behavior and fulfill the Mott relation. We simultaneously measure all four transport coefficients of the longitudinal resistivity, transversal resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, and anomalous Nernst coefficient. We connect the values of the measured and calculated Nernst conductivity by using the remaining three magneto-therm…
We investigate magnon spin transport in epitaxial nickel ferrite (NiFe$_2$O$_4$, NFO) films grown on magnesium gallate spinel (MgGa$_2$O$_4$, MGO) substrates, which have a lattice mismatch with NFO as small as 0.78%, resulting in the reduction of antiphase boundary defects and thus in improved magnetic properties in the NFO films. In the nonlocal transport experiments, enhanced signals are observed for both electrically and thermally excited magnons, and the magnon relaxation length ($λ_m$) of NFO is found to be around 2.5 $μ$m at room temperature. Moreover, at both room and low temperatures, …
Thermoelectric (TE) devices have been attracting increasing attention because of their ability to convert heat directly to electricity. To date, improving the TE figure of merit remains the key challenge. The advent of the topological insulator and the emerging nanotechnology open a new way to design high-performance TE devices. In this paper, we investigate the TE transport properties of the Bi2Se3 thin film by the first-principle calculations and the Boltzmann transport theory. By comparing our calculations with the earlier experimental data, we demonstrate that, for the Bi2Se3 film of thick…
Recent spin-Seebeck experiments on thin ferromagnetic films apply a temperature difference $ΔT_{x}$ along the length $x$ and measure a (transverse) voltage difference $ΔV_{y}$ along the width $y$. The connection between these effects is complex, involving: (1) thermal equilibration between sample and substrate; (2) spin currents along the height (or thickness) $z$; and (3) the measured voltage difference. The present work studies in detail the first of these steps, and outlines the other two steps. Thermal equilibration processes between the magnons and phonons in the sample, as well as betwee…
We report the spin to charge current conversation in an intrinsic topological insulator (TI) $(Bi_{0.22}Sb_{0.78})_2Te_3$ film at room temperature. The spin currents are generated in a thin layer of permalloy (Py) by two different processes, spin pumping (SPE) and spin Seebeck effects (SSE). In the first we use microwave-driven ferromagnetic resonance of the Py film to generate a SPE spin current that is injected into the TI $(Bi_{0.22}Sb_{0.78})_2Te_3$ layer in direct contact with Py. In the second we use the SSE in the longitudinal configuration in Py without contamination by the Nernst effe…
The realization of self-assembled molecular-electronic films, whose room-temperature transport properties are controlled by quantum interference (QI), is an essential step in the scale-up QI effects from single molecules to parallel arrays of molecules. Recently, the effect of destructive QI (DQI) on the electrical conductance of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) has been investigated. Here, through a combined experimental and theoretical investigation, we demonstrate chemical control of different forms of constructive QI (CQI) in cross-plane transport through SAMs and assess its influence on c…
Circular photogalvanic currents are a promising new approach for spin-optoelectronics. To date, such currents have only been induced in topological insulator flakes or extended films. It is not clear whether they can be generated in nanodevices. In this paper, we demonstrate the generation of circular photogalvanic currents in $\text{Bi}_2\text{Se}_3$ nanowires. Each nanowire shows topological surface states. Here, we generate and distinguish the different photocurrent contributions via the driving light wave. We separate the circular photogalvanic currents from those due to thermal Seebeck ef…
We report magnetoresistance measurements on thin Pt bars grown on epitaxial (001) and (111) CoFe2O4 (CFO) ferrimagnetic insulating films. The results can be described in terms of the recently discovered spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). The magnitude of the SMR depends on the interface preparation conditions, being optimal when Pt/CFO samples are prepared in situ, in a single process. The spin-mixing interface conductance, the key parameter governing SMR and other relevant spin-dependent phenomena such as spin pumping or spin Seebeck effect, is found to be different depending on the crystallo…
