As spin caloritronic measurements become increasingly common techniques for characterizing material properties, it is important to quantify potentially confounding effects. We report measurements of the Nernst-Ettingshausen response from room temperature to 5 K in thin film wires of Pt and W, metals commonly used as inverse spin Hall detectors in spin Seebeck characterization. Johnson-Nyquist noise thermometry is used to assess the temperature change of the metals with heater power at low temperatures, and the thermal path is analyzed via finite-element modeling. The Nernst-Ettingshausen response of W is found to be approximately temperature-independent, while the response of Pt increases at low temperatures. These results are discussed in the context of theoretical expectations and the possible role of magnetic impurities in Pt.
In the presented report, the Nernst-Ettingshausen effect in layered conductors is investigated. Considering a Fermi surface (FS) consisting of a slightly corrugated cylinder and two corrugated planes distributed periodically in the momentum space, the thermoelectric effects are considered under general assumptions for the value of a magnetic breakdown probability. As a result of an external generalized force, the FS sheets in layered conductors with a multisheet FS appear to be so close that the charge carriers (as a result of magnetic breakdown) can move from one FS sheet to another. In addit…
The ideal reversible thermodynamic cycle visualization of the Nernst effect in Laughlin geometry, excluding the kinetic contribution is proposed. The Ettingshausen effect is also treated in the fashion using the reverse cycle. The corresponding values of the off-diagonal thermoelectric coefficients are expressed through the ratio of the entropy budget per magnetic flux. Our approach enlightens the profound thermodynamic origin of the relation between the Nernst effect and magnetization currents.
In elemental Bismuth, 10$^5$ atoms share a single itinerant electron. Therefore, a moderate magnetic field can confine electrons to the lowest Landau level. We report on the first study of metallic thermoelectricity in this regime. The main thermoelectric response is off-diagonal with an oscillating component several times larger than the non-oscillating background. When the first Landau level attains the Fermi Energy, both the Nernst and the Ettingshausen coefficients sharply peak, and the latter attains a temperature-independent maximum. A qualitative agreement with a theory invoking current…
We study electronic transport in graphene under the influence of a transversal magnetic field $\f{B}(\f{r})=B(x)\f{e}_z$ with the asymptotics $B(x\to\pm\infty)=\pm B_0$, which could be realized via a folded graphene sheet in a constant magnetic field, for example. By solving the effective Dirac equation, we find robust modes with a finite energy gap which propagate along the fold -- where particles and holes move in opposite directions. Exciting these particle-hole pairs with incident photons would then generate a nearly perfect charge separation and thus a strong magneto-thermoelectric (Nerns…
The transverse Nernst Ettingshausen (N-E) effect and electron mobility in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Se alloys are studied experimentally and theoretically as functions of temperature and chemical composition in the vicinity of vanishing energy gap $E_g$. The study is motivated by the recent discovery that, by lowering the temperature, one can change the band ordering from trivial to nontrivial one in which the topological crystalline insulator states appear at the surface. Our work presents several new aspects. It is shown experimentally and theoretically that the bulk N-E effect has a maximum when the …
We investigate whether there could exist topological invariants of gapped 2D materials related to dissipationless thermoelectric transport at low temperatures. We give both macroscopic and microscopic arguments showing that thermoelectric transport coefficients vanish in the limit of zero temperature and thus topological invariants arise only from the electric Hall conductance and the thermal Hall conductance. Our arguments apply to systems with arbitrarily strong interactions. We also show that there is no analog of the Thouless pump for entropy.
We consider the Nernst-Ettingshausen (NE) effect in the presence of semiclassically strong magnetic fields for a quasi-two dimensional system with a parabolic or linear dispersion of carriers. We show that the occurring giant oscillations of the NE coefficient are coherent with the recent experimental observation in graphene, graphite and bismuth. In the 2D case we find the exact shape of these oscillations and show that their magnitude decreases/increases with enhancement of the Fermi energy for Dirac fermions/normal carriers. With a crossover to 3D spectrum the phase of oscillations shifts, …
The anisotropic magneto-Peltier effect (AMPE) and anomalous Ettingshausen effect (AEE) have been investigated in U-shaped Ni thin films of varying thickness and substrate by means of the lock-in thermography (LIT) method. We have established a procedure to extract pure AMPE and AEE contributions, separated from other thermoelectric effects, for ferromagnetic thin films. The measurements of the magnetic-field-angle $θ_{\rm H}$ dependence of the LIT images clearly show that the temperature modulation induced by the AMPE (AEE) in the Ni films varies with the $\cos 2θ_{\rm H}$ ($\cos θ_{\rm H}$) p…
Spatial distribution of temperature modulation due to anomalous Ettingshausen effect (AEE) is visualized in a ferromagnetic FePt thin film with in-plane and out-of-plane magnetizations using the lock-in thermography technique. Comparing the AEE of FePt with the spin Peltier effect (SPE) of a Pt / yttrium iron garnet junction provides direct evidence of different symmetries of AEE and SPE. Our experiments and numerical calculations reveal that the distribution of heat sources induced by AEE strongly depends on the direction of magnetization, leading to the remarkable different temperature profi…
The Hall effect can be extended by inducing a temperature gradient in lieu of electric field that is known as the Nernst (-Ettingshausen) effect. The recently discovered spin Nernst effect in heavy metals continues to enrich the picture of Nernst effect-related phenomena. However, the collection would not be complete without mentioning the valley degree of freedom benchmarked by the observation of the valley Hall effect. Here we show the experimental evidence of its missing counterpart, the valley Nernst effect. Using millimeter-sized WSe$_{2}$ mono-multi-layers and the ferromagnetic resonance…
We report a measurement for the anomalous Nernst effects induced by a temperature gradient in [CoSiB/Pt] multilayer films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The Nernst voltage shows a characteristic hysteresis which reflects the magnetization of the film as in the case of the anomalous Hall effects. With a local heating geometry, we also measure the dependence of the anomalous Nernst voltage on the distance d from the heating element. It is roughly proportional to 1/d^1.3, which can be conjectured from the expected temperature gradient along the sample from the heat equation.
The observation of the spin Hall effect triggered intense research on pure spin current transport. With the spin Hall effect, the spin Seebeck effect, and the spin Peltier effect already observed, our picture of pure spin current transport is almost complete. The only missing piece is the spin Nernst (-Ettingshausen) effect, that so far has only been discussed on theoretical grounds. Here, we report the observation of the spin Nernst effect. By applying a longitudinal temperature gradient, we generate a pure transverse spin current in a Pt thin film. For readout, we exploit the magnetization-o…
The presence of a finite Berry curvature $\left(Ω\left(k\right)\right)$ leads to anomalous thermal effects. In this letter, we compute the coefficients for the anomalous Nernst effect $\left(ANE\right) $ and its spin analogue, the spin Nernst effect $\left(SNE\right)$ in lead chalcogenide (\textit{PbX}; \textit{X} = S, Se, Te) films. The narrow gapped \textit{PbX} films with a large spin-orbit coupling (\textit{soc}) offer a significant Rashba interaction that gives rise to $ Ω\left(k\right) $ and the attendant anomalous thermal behaviour. In presence of a temperature gradient, the $ ANE $ and…

The anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) has been investigated in alternately-stacked multilayer films comprising paramagnetic and ferromagnetic metals. We found that the ANE is enhanced with increasing the number of the paramagnet/ferromagnet interfaces with keeping the total thickness of the films constant, and that the enhancement appears even in the absence of magnetic proximity effects; similar behavior was observed not only in Pt/Fe multilayers but also in Au/Fe and Cu/Fe multilayers free from proximity ferromagnetism. This universal enhancement of the ANE in the metallic multilayers suggests t…
We express the link between conductivity and coefficients of Seebeck, Nernst-Ettingshausen, Peltier, and Thompson and Reghi-Leduc via the temperature derivative of the chemical potential of a system. These general expressions are applied to three-, two- and one-dimensional systems of charge carriers having a parabolic or Dirac spectrum. The method allows for predicting thermoelectric and thermomagnetic properties of novel materials and structures.
The magneto-thermoelectric properties of Heusler compound thin films are very diverse. Here, we discuss the anomalous Nernst response of Co$_2$MnGa thin films. We systematically study the anomalous Nernst coefficient as a function of temperature, and we show that unlike the anomalous Hall effect, the anomalous Nernst effect in Co$_2$MnGa strongly varies with temperature. We exploit the on-chip thermometry technique to quantify the thermal gradient, which enables us to directly evaluate the anomalous Nernst coefficient. We compare these results to a reference CoFeB thin film. We show that the 5…
We present the observation of a transverse thermopower, or Planar Nernst Effect, in patterned ultrathin film (8 nm) of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) driven by heat current applied in-plane of the film and Planar Hall Effect (PHE) in the same LSMO ultrathin film with in-plane current of 100 microA is also investigated. Even for temperature difference of 5 K the Planar Nernst Effect in ultrathin film (8 nm) shows a coercivity of 3 Oe same as observed in Planar Hall Effect measurement and confirms the ferromagnetic nature of thin film. The angular dependence of transverse voltages shows four-fold sin{the…
We investigate the spatial distribution of temperature induced by a dc current in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field. We numerically calculate the distributions of the electrostatic potential phi and the temperature T in a 2DEG enclosed in a square area surrounded by insulated-adiabatic (top and bottom) and isopotential-isothermal (left and right) boundaries (with phi_{left} < phi_{right} and T_{left} =T_{right}), using a pair of nonlinear Poisson equations (for phi and T) that fully take into account thermoelectric and thermomagnetic phenomena, i…
A new concept realizing giant spin Nernst effect in nonmagnetic metallic films is introduced. It is based on the idea of engineering an asymmetric energy dependence of the longitudinal and transverse electrical conductivities, as well as a pronounced energy dependence of the spin Hall angle in the vicinity of the Fermi level by the resonant impurity states at the Fermi level. We employ an analytical model and demonstrate the emergence of a giant spin Nernst effect in Ag(111) films using {\it ab-initio} calculations combined with the Boltzmann approach for transport properties arising from skew…
The anomaly in the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) was observed for a C1b-type NiMnSb half-Heusler alloy thin film deposited on a MgO (001) substrate. The Nernst angle (θANE) showed maximum peak with decreasing temperature and reached 0.15 at 80 K, which is considered to be brought by the cross-over from half-metal to normal ferromagnet in NiMnSb at low temperature. This anomaly was also observed for the transport properties, that is, both the resistivity and the anomalous Hall resistivity in the same temperature range.
We report a robust anomalous Nernst effect in Co2MnGa thin films in the thickness regime between 20 and 50 nm. The anomalous Nernst coefficient varied in the range of -2.0 to -3.0 uV/K at 300 K. We demonstrate that the anomalous Hall and Nernst coefficients exhibit similar behavior and fulfill the Mott relation. We simultaneously measure all four transport coefficients of the longitudinal resistivity, transversal resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, and anomalous Nernst coefficient. We connect the values of the measured and calculated Nernst conductivity by using the remaining three magneto-therm…
Transverse magneto-thermoelectric effects are studied in permalloy thin films grown on MgO and GaAs substrates and compared to those grown on suspended SiN membranes. The transverse voltage along platinum strips patterned on top of the permalloy films is measured vs. the external magnetic field as a function of angle and temperature gradient. After the identification of the contribution of the planar and anomalous Nernst effects, we find an upper limit for the transverse spin Seebeck effect, which is several orders of magnitude smaller than previously reported.
The topological kagome magnet (TKM) Fe3Sn2 exhibits unusual topological properties, flat electronic bands, and chiral spin textures, making it an exquisite materials platform to explore the interplay between topological band structure, strong electron correlations, and magnetism. Here we report the first synthesis of high-quality epitaxial (0001) Fe3Sn2 films with large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect close to that measured in bulk single crystals. In addition, we measured a large, anisotropic anomalous Nernst coefficient Syx of 1.26 μV/K, roughly 2-5x greater than that of common ferromagnets,…
The Mott relation between the electrical and thermoelectric transport coefficients normally holds for phenomena involving scattering. However, the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in ferromagnets may arise from intrinsic spin-orbit interaction. In this work, we have simultaneously measured AHE and the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in Ga1-xMnxAs ferromagnetic semiconductor films, and observed an exceptionally large ANE at zero magnetic field. We further show that AHE and ANE share a common origin and demonstrate the validity of the Mott relation for the anomalous transport phenomena.
Harmonic measurements of the longitudinal and transverse voltages in Bi-Sb/Co bilayers are presented. A large second harmonic voltage signal due to the ordinary Nernst effect is observed. In experiments where a magnetic field is rotated in the film plane, the ordinary Nernst effect shows the same angular dependence in the transverse voltage as the damping-like spin-orbit torque and in the longitudinal voltage as the unidirectional spin-Hall magneto-resistance respectively. Therefore, the ordinary Nernst effect can be a spurious signal in spin-orbit torque measurements, leading to an overestima…
The spin Hall effect allows generation of spin current when charge current is passed along materials with large spin orbit coupling. It has been recently predicted that heat current in a non-magnetic metal can be converted into spin current via a process referred to as the spin Nernst effect. Here we report the observation of the spin Nernst effect in W. In W/CoFeB/MgO heterostructures, we find changes in the longitudinal and transverse voltages with magnetic field when temperature gradient is applied across the film. The field-dependence of the voltage resembles that of the spin Hall magnetor…
We identify and investigate thermal spin transport phenomena in sputter-deposited Pt/NiFe$_2$O$_{\textrm{4-x}}$ ($4\geq x \geq 0$) bilayers. We separate the voltage generated by the spin Seebeck effect from the anomalous Nernst effect contributions and even disentangle the intrinsic anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in the ferromagnet (FM) from the ANE produced by the Pt that is spin polarized due to its proximity to the FM. Further, we probe the dependence of these effects on the electrical conductivity and the band gap energy of the FM film varying from nearly insulating NiFe$_2$O$_4$ to metalli…
Spin-to-heat current conversion effects have been investigated in bilayer films consisting of a paramagnetic metal (PM; Pt, W, or Ta) and a ferromagnetic metal (FM; CoFeB or permalloy). When a charge current is applied to the PM/FM bilayer film, a spin current is generated across the PM/FM interface owing to the spin Hall effect in PM. The spin current was found to exhibit cooling and heating features depending on the sign of the spin Hall angle of PM, where the spin-current-induced contribution is estimated by subtracting the contribution of the anomalous Ettingshausen effect in FM monolayer …
We theoretically investigate the vortex spin Hall effect, i.e., a novel spin Hall effect driven by the motion of superconducting vortices, by focusing on the role of superconducting fluctuations. Within the BCS-Gor'kov microscopic approach combined with the Kubo formula, we find a strong similarity between the vortex spin Hall effect and the vortex Nernst/Ettingshausen effect. Calculated temperature dependence of the voltage signal due to the inverse vortex spin Hall effect exhibits a strong enhancement by vortex fluctuations. This result not only provides a possible explanation for a prominen…
A thermal gradient as the driving force for spin currents plays a key role in spin caloritronics. In this field the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) is of major interest and was investigated in terms of in-plane thermal gradients inducing perpendicular spin currents (transverse SSE) and out-of-plane thermal gradients generating parallel spin currents (longitudinal SSE). Up to now all spincaloric experiments employ a spatially fixed thermal gradient. Thus anisotropic measurements with respect to well defined crystallographic directions were not possible. Here we introduce a new experiment that allows …
Considering metallic films at room temperature, we present the first theoretical study of the spin Nernst and thermal Edelstein effects which takes into account dynamical spin-orbit coupling, i.e., direct spin-orbit coupling with the vibrating lattice (phonons) and impurities. This gives rise to two novel processes, namely a dynamical Elliott-Yafet spin relaxation and a dynamical side-jump mechanism. Both are the high-temperature counterparts of the well-known $T = 0$ Elliott-Yafet and side-jump, central to the current understanding of the spin Hall, spin Nernst and Edelstein effects at low $T…
The presence of non-trivial magnetic topology can give rise to non-vanishing scalar spin chirality and consequently a topological Hall or Nernst effect. In turn, topological transport signals can serve as indicators for topological spin structures. This is particularly important in thin films or nanopatterned materials where the spin structure is not readily accessible. Conventionally, the topological response is determined by combining magnetotransport data with an independent magnetometry experiment. This approach is prone to introduce measurement artifacts. In this study, we report the obse…
Transverse acoustic waves in an inhomogeneous medium are analogues to electromagnetic waves and will exhibit topological behavior due to the Berry gauge potential in the momentum space due to inhomogeneity. The inhomogeneous (or gradient) medium can be created using an applied strain gradient in a semiconductor thin film (silicon) since the phonon frequency and dispersion will be a function of the local strain along the strain gradient direction. As a consequence, topological phonon mediated spin and heat transport can be engineered in the semiconductor thin films. Here, we present evidence of…
A theory of the fluctuation-induced Nernst effect is developed for arbitrary magnetic fields and temperatures beyond the upper critical field line in a two-dimensional superconductor. First, we derive a simple phenomenological formula for the Nernst coefficient, which naturally explains the giant Nernst signal due to fluctuating Cooper pairs. The latter is shown to be large even far from the transition and may exceed by orders of magnitude the Fermi liquid terms. We also present a complete microscopic calculation (which includes quantum fluctuations) of the Nernst coefficient and give its asym…
Interfacial spin to charge conversion arises due to an electric potential perpendicular to the interface. The electric potential can be artificially induced, for example, using ferroelectric and piezoelectric thin films at the interface. An alternate way to induce the electric potential could be flexoelectric field. The flexoelectricity can be observed in all the material that either have or lack inversion symmetry, additionally no large gate bias is needed. In this experimental study, we report large spin to charge conversion (spin-Hall angle- 0.578) at Ni80Fe20/amorphous-Si interfaces attrib…
By investigating the nonequilibrium transport across a metal/superconductor junction in both nonrelativistic and relativistic cases, we reveal that the asymmetric Andreev reflection with anisotropic superconductors is able to induce the electric and thermal Hall-like effect, in the absence of magnetic field. That is, a longitudinal electric voltage or temperature bias can induce transverse electric or thermal currents merely through the asymmetric Andreev reflection, respectively. In particular, a transverse thermoelectric effect, i.e., the Ettingshausen-like effect, is identified, although th…
Using the linear response formalism for the spin-orbit torque (SOT) we compute from first principles the SOT in a system of two layers of L1$_0$-FePt(001) deposited on an fcc Pt(001) substrate of varying thickness. We find that at room temperature the values of the SOTs that are even and odd with respect to magnetization generally lie in the range of values measured and computed for Co/Pt bilayers. We also observe that the even SOT is much more robust with respect to changing the number of layers in the substrate, and as a function of energy it follows the general trend of the even SOT exerted…

Inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) allows the conversion of pure spin current into charge current in nonmagnetic materials (NM) due to spin-orbit interaction (SOI). In ferromagnetic materials (FM), SOI is known to contribute to anomalous Hall effect (AHE), anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR), and other spin-dependent transport phenomena. However, SOI in FM has been ignored in ISHE studies in spintronic devices, and the possibility of "self-induced ISHE" in FM has never been explored until now. In this paper, we demonstrate the experimental verification of ISHE in FM. We found that the spin-pumpin…
The longitudinal spin Seebeck effect is detected in sputter-deposited NiFe2O4 films using Pt as a spin detector and compared to previously investigated NiFe2O4 films prepared by chemical vapor deposition. Anomalous Nernst effects induced by the magnetic proximity effect in Pt can be excluded for the sputter-deposited NiFe2O4 films down to a certain limit, since x-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity measurements show no magnetic response down to a limit of 0.04 μB per Pt atom comparable to the case of the chemicallydeposited NiFe2O4 films. These differently prepared films have various thicknesse…
We report the spin to charge current conversation in an intrinsic topological insulator (TI) $(Bi_{0.22}Sb_{0.78})_2Te_3$ film at room temperature. The spin currents are generated in a thin layer of permalloy (Py) by two different processes, spin pumping (SPE) and spin Seebeck effects (SSE). In the first we use microwave-driven ferromagnetic resonance of the Py film to generate a SPE spin current that is injected into the TI $(Bi_{0.22}Sb_{0.78})_2Te_3$ layer in direct contact with Py. In the second we use the SSE in the longitudinal configuration in Py without contamination by the Nernst effe…
In this note we summarize our recent results for the temperature dependence of transport coefficients of metallic films in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Our focus is on (i) the spin Nernst and the thermal Edelstein effects, and (ii) the phonon skew scattering contribution to the spin Hall conductivity, which is relevant for the temperature dependence of the spin Hall angle. Depending on the parameters, the latter is expected to show a non-monotonous behavior.
Antiferromagnets and compensated ferrimagnets offer opportunities to investigate spin dynamics in the 'terahertz gap' because their resonance modes lie in the 0.3 THz to 3 THz range. Despite some inherent advantages when compared to ferromagnets, these materials have not been extensively studied due to difficulties in exciting and detecting the high-frequency spin dynamics, especially in thin films. Here we show that spin-obit torque in a single layer of the highly spin-polarized compensated ferrimagnet Mn2RuxGa is remarkably efficient at generating spin-orbit fields μ_0H_eff, which approach 0…
In this study, we report first experimental evidence of spin-momentum locking in the topological phonons in an inhomogeneously strained Si thin film. The spin-momentum locking in the topological phonons lead to a longitudinal spin texture or spatially inhomogeneous spin distribution in the freestanding sample structure. The spin texture was uncovered using location dependent Hall effect and planar Hall effect measurement. The charge carrier density and anomalous Hall resistance showed a linear behavior along the length of the sample. Similarly, the planar Hall resistance related with the spin …
The superposition of flexoelectronic doping and topological phonons give rise to topological electronic magnetism of phonon in an inhomogeneously strained Si in the bilayer structure with metal. In case of ferromagnetic metal and Si bilayer structure, the flexoelectronic doping will also give rise to larger spin current, which will lead to large spin to charge conversion due to topological electronic magnetism of phonon. By applying a temperature difference to ferromagnetic metal/Si bilayer structure under an applied strain gradient, a large thermoelectric response can be generated. In this ex…
We study anomalous mesoscopic transport effects at the onset of the superconducting transition focusing on the observed large Nernst-Ettinghausen signal in disordered thin films. In the vicinity of the transition, as the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length of preformed Cooper pairs diverges, short-range mesoscopic fluctuations are equivalent to local fluctuations of the critical temperature. As a result, the dynamical susceptibility function of pair propagation acquires a singular mesoscopic component, and consequently, superconducting correlations give rise to enhanced mesoscopic fluctuations of…
