We theoretically investigate the vortex spin Hall effect, i.e., a novel spin Hall effect driven by the motion of superconducting vortices, by focusing on the role of superconducting fluctuations. Within the BCS-Gor'kov microscopic approach combined with the Kubo formula, we find a strong similarity between the vortex spin Hall effect and the vortex Nernst/Ettingshausen effect. Calculated temperature dependence of the voltage signal due to the inverse vortex spin Hall effect exhibits a strong enhancement by vortex fluctuations. This result not only provides a possible explanation for a prominent peak found in the spin Seebeck effect in a NbN/Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ system, but also leads to a proposal of new experiments using other superconductors with strong fluctuations, such as cuprate or iron-based superconductors.
In strongly anisotropic layered superconductors in tilted magnetic fields the Josephson vortex lattice coexists with the lattice of pancake vortices. Due to the interaction between them, the dissipation of the Josephson-vortex lattice occurs to be very sensitive to the presence of the pancake vortices. If the c-axis magnetic field is smaller then the corresponding lower critical field, the pancake stacks are not formed but the individual pancakes may exist in the fluctuational regime either near surface in large-size samples or in the central region for small-size mesas. We calculate the contr…
The dynamic interactions between Josephson and pancake vortices in highly anisotropic superconductors are probed by shaking the former vortices with an ac magnetic field and measuring the second harmonic Hall response of the latter vortices with the sensor positioned above the sample. We demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed measurement method that aims to probe the coupling between the two vortex species. New experimental data obtained on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 single crystals reveal interesting features and the possibility to determine the phase diagram of vortex matter in such superconductors.
We discuss the main features of Hall tunneling of pancake vortices in superclean high-$T_{c}$ superconductors. The general formalism for the calculation of the lifetime of a vortex pinned in a metastable configuration is described. The results are applied to the problem of quantum tunneling of a pancake vortex from a columnar defect in the limit of a small driving current.
We study the dynamics of vortices in d-wave superconductors using a phenomenological time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation with mixing of s- and d-wave components. We present numerical simulations under an external driving current $J$ oriented with an angle $ϕ$ with respect to the $b$ crystal axis, calculating the vortex motion and induced electric fields for $κ=\infty$. We find an intrinsic Hall effect for $ϕ\neq 0$ which depends as $\sim\sin(4ϕ)$, and increases non-linearly with $J$.
Quantum Hall-superconductor heterostructures provide possible platforms for intrinsically fault-tolerant quantum computing. Motivated by several recent experiments that successfully integrated these phases, we investigate transport through a proximitized integer quantum Hall edge--paying particular attention to the impact of vortices in the superconductor. By examining the downstream conductance, we identify regimes in which sub-gap vortex levels mediate Andreev processes that would otherwise be frozen out in a vortex-free setup. Moreover, we show that at finite temperature, and in the limit o…
Resistance in superconductors arises from the motion of vortices driven by flowing supercurrents or external electromagnetic fields and may be strongly affected by thermal or quantum fluctuations. The common expectation borne out in previous experiments is that as the temperature is lowered, vortex motion is suppressed, leading to a decreased resistance. A new generation of materials provides access to the previously inaccessible regime of clean-limit superconductivity in atomically thin superconducting layers. We show experimentally that for few-layer 2H-NbSe$_2$ the resistance below the supe…
We predict the very large spin Hall effect in type-II superconductors which mechanism is drastically different from the previously known ones. We find that in the flux-flow regime the spin is transported by the spin-polarized Abrikosov vortices moving under the action of the Lorenz force in the direction perpendicular to the applied electric current. Due to the large vortex velocities the spin Hall angle can be of the order of unity in realistic systems based on the high-field superconductors or the recently developed superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator proximity structures. We propose the …
Using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation with the complex relaxation time and the Maxwell equation, we systematically examine transverse motion of vortex dynamics in the presence of pinning disorders. Consequently, in a plastic flow phase in which moving and pinned vortices coexist, we find that the Hall voltage generally changes its sign. The origin of the sign change is ascribed to a fact that moving vortices are strongly drifted by circular current of pinned vortices and the enforced transverse moving direction becomes opposite to that by transport current. This suggests that the H…
Experimental evidence for the existence of a fluctuating charge-density wave order in the pseudogap regime of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ has renewed interest in its interplay with superconductivity. Here, we consider the problem within a nonlinear sigma model, which was recently proposed to describe the apparent competition between the two order parameters. In particular, we use a saddle-point approximation to calculate the properties of superconducting vortex excitations within such a model. In addition, we analytically calculate a collection of experimentally observable quantities, which probe b…
The Langevin equation for a two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear guided vortex motion in a tilted cosine pinning potential in the presence of an ac is exactly solved in terms of a matrix continued fraction at arbitrary value of the Hall effect. The influence of an ac of arbitrary amplitude and frequency on the dc and ac magnetoresistivity tensors is analyzed. The ac density and frequency dependence of the overall shape and the number and position of the Shapiro-like steps on the anisotropic current-voltage characteristics are considered. The influence of a subcritical or overcritical dc on the time-…
Hall anomaly, as appears in the mixed-state Hall resistivity of type-II superconductors, has had numerous theories but yet a consensus on its origin. In this work, we conducted a quantitative analysis of the magnetotransport measurements on BSCCO thin films by Zhao et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 247001 (2019)] and validate a previously proposed vacancy mechanism [cf. J. Phys. Condens. Matter. 10, L677 (1998)] with many-body vortex correlations for the phenomenon. The model attributes the Hall anomaly to the motion of vacancies in pinned fragments of vortex lattice. Its validity is first examine…
The minimal theory of spin of gapless quasiparticles coupled to fluctuating vortex defects in the phase of the d-wave superconducting order parameter at T=0 is studied. With the proliferation of the vortex loops the theory reduces to the previuosly studied QED3, with its concomitant spin-density-wave (chiral) instability. We find a single superconductor-insulator phase transition, which may be fluctuation induced first-order, at which vortices condense and the chiral symmetry for fermions dynamically breaks. We compute the spin-spin correlation function deep in the fluctuating superconducting …
Explicit current-dependent expressions for anisotropic longitudinal and transverse nonlinear magnetoresistivities are represented and analyzed on the basis of a Fokker-Planck approach for two-dimensional single-vortex dynamics in a washboard pinning potential in the presence of point-like disorder. Graphical analysis of the resistive responses is presented both in the current-angle coordinates and in the rotating current scheme. The model describes nonlinear anisotropy effects caused by the competition of point-like (isotropic) and anisotropic pinning. Nonlinear guiding effects are discussed a…
We study experimentally and theoretically, the reorganization of superconducting vortices driven by oscillatory forces near the plastic depinning transition. We show that the system can be taken to configurations that are tagged by the shaking parameters but keep no trace of the initial conditions. In experiments performed in $NbSe_2$ crystals, the periodic drive is induced by ac magnetic shaking fields and the overall order of the resulting configuration is determined by non invasive ac susceptibility measurements. With a model of interacting particles driven over random landscapes, we perfor…
The fluctuation induced diamagnetism of underdoped high temperature superconductors is studied in the framework of the Lawrence-Doniach model. By taking into account the fluctuations of the phase of the order parameter only, the latter reduces to a layered XY-model describing a liquid of vortices which can be either thermally excited or induced by the external magnetic field. The diamagnetic response is given by a current-current correlation function which is evaluated using the Coulomb gas analogy. Our results are then applied to recent measurements of fluctuation diamagnetism in underdoped Y…
Longitudinal electric field of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) drags vortex structure of a superconductive film, deposited on a piezoelectric substrate, and generates longitudinal DC component of an acoustoelectric field, which does not depend on direction of an external magnetic field. The contra-directional vortices are dragged by SAW in opposite directions. This phenomenon represents an acoustic analog of Hall effect, where vortices are an analog of current carriers, and the SAW Pointing vector acts as an impressed electric field. The calculation of the acoustoelectric field for a YBCO film w…
Excitation spectrum of a half-quantum vortex in a p-wave superconductor contains a zero-energy Majorana fermion. This results in a degeneracy of the ground state of the system of several vortices. From the properties of the solutions to Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations in the vortex core we derive the non-abelian statistics of vortices identical to that for the Moore-Read (Pfaffian) quantum Hall state.
We present a study of the Nernst effect in amorphous 2D superconductor InO$_x$, whose low carrier density implies low phase rigidity and strong superconducting phase fluctuations. Instead of presenting the abrupt jump expected at a BCS transition, the Nernst signal evolves continuously through the superconducting transition as previously observed in underdoped cuprates. This contrasts with the case of Nb$_{0.15}$Si$_{0.85}$, where the Nernst signal due to vortices below T$_{c}$ and by Gaussian fluctuations above are clearly distinct. The behavior of the ghost critical field in InO$_x$ points t…
It is shown that there are three kinds of vortices in a superconductor; a vortex with the fluxoid quantum 1 (VF), a new vortex with 0 (VZF), and a vortex with -1 (VAF), respectively. The Hall field via three vortices is studied and found to change its sign, depending of the relative strength of contributions via VF and VAF, similar to that of a system with two kinds of carriers. VZF is suggested to act as a domain wall between VF and VAF regions, accounting for the flux and antiflux regions observed in Nb films.

We report scanning Hall probe microscopy of highly underdoped superconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} with T_c ranging from 5 to 15 K which showed distinct flux bundles with less than one superconducting flux quantum (Phi_0) through the sample surface. The sub-Phi_0 features occurred more frequently for lower T_c, were more mobile than conventional vortices, and occurred more readily when the sample was cooled with an in-plane field component. We show that these features are consistent with kinked stacks of pancake vortices.
The effect of the Hall force on the pinning of vortices in type II superconductors is considered. A field theoretic formulation of the pinning problem allows a non-perturbative treatment of the influence of quenched disorder. A self-consistent theory is constructed using the diagrammatic functional method for the effective action, and an expression for the pinning force for independent vortices as well as vortex lattices is obtained. We find that the pinning force for a single vortex is suppressed by the Hall force at low temperatures while it is increased at high temperatures. The effect of t…
We develop a theory of the rectification effect in a double-layer system where both layers are superconductors, or one of the layers is a normal metal. The Coulomb interaction is assumed to provide the dominant coupling between the layers. We find that superconducting fluctuations strongly enhance the drag conductivity, with rectification most pronounced when both layers are superconductors. In view of their distinct dependence on temperature near Tc and layer separation, drag measurements based on a Giaever transformer could distinguish whether rectification occurs due to fluctuating pairs or…
A strong periodic potential generally enhances the short wavelength fluctuations of a superfluid beyond the validity of standard continuum approaches. Here we report some recent results on hard core bosons on finite lattices. We find several interesting effects of the periodic potential on the ground state, vortex dynamics, and and Hall conductivity. For example, the Magnus field on a vortex abruptly reverses direction at half filling. A rotating Bose condensate on an optical lattice may allow an experimental test of our results. Insight may also be gained about strongly fluctuating supercondu…
The Hall voltage sign reversal is consistently explained by the model in which vortices with the superconducting and normal state charge carriers are regarded as three subsystems mutually connected by interactions. The equations of motion for these three subsystems are solved simultaneously and a new formula for the Hall resistivity is obtained. It is shown that it is possible to explain qualitatively experimental data by this model.
When a superconductor is warmed above its critical temperature $T_c$, long range order is destroyed by fluctuations in the order parameter. These fluctuations can be probed by measurements of conductivity, diamagnetism, and of the Nernst effect. Here, we study a regime where superconductivity is destroyed by phase fluctuations arising from a dilute liquid of mobile vortices. We find that the Nernst effect and diamagnetic response differ significantly from Gaussian fluctuations -- in particular, a much sharper decay with temperature is obtained. We predict a rapid onset of Nernst signal at a te…
The chiral topological superconductor in two dimensions has a full pairing gap in the bulk and a single chiral Majorana state at the edge. The vortex of the chiral superconducting state carries a Majorana zero mode which is responsible for the non-abelian statistics of the vortices. Despite intensive searches, this novel superconducting state has not yet been identified in nature. In this paper, we consider a quantum Hall or a quantum anomalous Hall state near the plateau transition, and in proximity to a fully gapped s-wave superconductor. We show that this hybrid system realizes the long sou…
Using an array of miniature Hall probes, we monitored the spatiotemporal variation of the internal magnetic induction in a superconducting niobium sample during a slow sweep of external magnetic field. We found that a sizable fraction of the increase in the local vortex population occurs in abrupt jumps. The size distribution of these avalanches presents a power-law collapse on a limited range. In contrast, at low temperatures and low fields, huge avalanches with a typical size occur and the system does not display a well-defined macroscopic critical current.
Motivated by recent transport measurements in high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors in a magnetic field, we study the thermal Hall conductivity in materials with topological order, focusing on the contribution from neutral spinons. Specifically, different Schwinger boson mean-field ansätze for the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice are analyzed. We allow for both Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and additional terms associated with scalar spin chiralities that break time-reversal and reflection symmetries, but preserve their product. It is shown that these scalar spin chiralities…
This paper has been withdrawn and replaced by a new version entitled "Vortex quantum dynamics of two dimensional lattice bosons" By Netanel H. Lindner, Assa Auerbach, Daniel P. Arovas, posted in arXiv:0810.2604. The calculations and results of the original manuscript were correct, and lead to several important conclusions about vortex dynamics and Hall conductance. However, we have dropped our conjecture, that vortices exhibit mutual Fermi statistics. The conjecture was based on the antisymmetry under exchange of two vortices, as revealed in the lowest eight many-body eigenstates of 16 sites t…
We investigate the multiquantum vortex states in type-II superconductor both in "clean" and "dirty" regimes defined by impurity scattering rate. Within quasiclassical approach we calculate self-consistently the order parameter distributions and electronic local density of states (LDOS) profiles. In the clean case we find the low temperature vortex core anomaly predicted analytically in G.E. Volovik, JETP Lett. {\bf 58}, 455 (1993) and obtain the interference patterns in LDOS distributions analogous to found previously in the framework of Bogolubov-de Gennes theory. In dirty regime the multiqua…
The physics of a planar chiral $p\pm i p$ superconductor is studied for various vortex configurations. The occurrence of vortex quasi-particle bound states is exposed together with their ensuing collective properties, such as sub-gap bands induced by inter-vortex tunneling. A general method to diagonalize the Hamiltonian of a superconductor in the presence of a vortex lattice is developed, that employs only smooth gauge transformations. It renders the Hamiltonian to be periodic (thus allowing the use of a Bloch theorem) and enables the treatment of systems with vortices of finite radii. The pe…
We study driven vortices lattices in superconducting thin films. Above the critical force $F_c$ we find two dynamical phase transitions at $F_p$ and $F_t$, which could be observed in simultaneous noise measurements of the longitudinal and the Hall voltage. At $F_p$ there is a transition from plastic flow to smectic flow where the voltage noise is isotropic (Hall noise = longitudinal noise) and there is a peak in the differential resistance. At $F_t$ there is a sharp transition to a frozen transverse solid where the Hall noise falls down abruptly and vortex motion is localized in the transverse…
The mixed-state Hall effect was examined in a Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 epitaxial film with a high critical current density. The transverse resistivity ρxy and the longitudinal resistivity ρxx follow power law scaling ρxy = Aρxxβ. In the temperature-sweep with a fixed field (T sweep), all of the β values are independent of magnetic field up to 9 T, and are lower than 2.0 (around 1.8). In contrast, the β values in the magnetic-field sweep with a fixed temperature (H sweep) change from 1.8 to 2.0 as the temperature increases from 13 to 16 K even in the T/H region that overlaps with the T sweep measuremen…
We present a general scenario for high-temperature superconducting cuprates, based on the presence of dynamical charge density waves (CDWs) and to the occurrence of a CDW quantum critical point, which occurs, e.g., at doping p~0.16 in YBCO. In this framework, even the pseudogap temperature T* is interpreted in terms of a reduction of the density of states due to incipient CDW and, at lower temperature to the possible formation of incoherent superconducting pairs. The dynamically fluctuating character of CDW accounts for the different temperatures at which the pseudogap (T*), the CDW onset reve…

Magnetoresistivity and Hall effect measured in magnetic fields up to B=9T (B||c, J||ab) in electron-doped $Nd_{2-x}$Ce_{x}Cu$O_{4+δ} single crystal films with x = 0.14; 0.15; 0.18 and different oxygen content (δ) were studied in a temperature range of 0.4-4.2 K. The resistivity and Hall coefficient behaviors in the mixed state are discussed in the framework of flux-flow model with the inclusion of the back-flow of vortices owing to the pinning forces.
We explore, with unprecedented single vortex resolution, the dissipation and motion of vortices in a superconducting ribbon under the influence of an external alternating magnetic field. This is achieved by combing the phase sensitive character of ac-susceptibility, allowing to distinguish between the inductive-and dissipative response, with the local power of scanning Hall probe microscopy. Whereas the induced reversible screening currents contribute only inductively, the vortices do leave a fingerprint in the out-of-phase component. The observed large phase-lag demonstrates the dissipation o…
The electronic structure of a vortex line trapped by a planar defect in a type-II superconductor is analyzed within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory. The normal reflection of electrons and holes at the defect plane results in the topological transition in the spectrum and formation of a new type of quasiparticle states skipping or gliding along the defect. This topological transition appears to be a hallmark of the initial stage of the crossover from the Abrikosov to the Josephson vortex type revealing in the specific behavior of the quantized quasiparticle levels and density of states. The inc…
The tunneling rate t_v of a vortex between two pinning sites (of strength V separated by d) is computed using the Bogoliubov expansion of vortex wavefunctions overlap. For BCS vortices, tunneling is suppressed beyond a few Fermi wavelengths. For Bose condensates, t_v = V exp(- pi n_s d^2/2), where n_s is the boson density. The analogy between vortex hopping in a superconducting film and 2D electrons in a perpendicular magnetic field is exploited. We derive the variable range hopping temperature, below which vortex tunneling contributes to magneto-resistance. Using the 'Quantum Hall Insulator' …
By using mutual flux-attaching singular gauge transformations, we derive an effective action describing the zero temperature quantum phase transition from d-wave superconductor to underdoped regime. In this effective action, quantum fluctuation generated vortices couple to quasi-particles by a mutual statistical interaction with statistical angle θ, the vortices are also interacting with each other by long range interactions due to charge fluctuation. Neglecting the charge fluctuation, we find a fixed line characterized by θand calculate the universal spinon, vortex and mutual Hall drag conduc…
In very anisotropic layered superconductors (e.g. Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_x$) a tilted magnetic field can penetrate as two co-existing lattices of vortices parallel and perpendicular to the layers. At low out-of-plane fields the perpendicular vortices form a set of isolated vortex chains, which have recently been observed in detail with scanning Hall-probe measurements. We present calculations that show a very delicate stability of this isolated-chain state. As the vortex density increases along the chain there is a first-order transition to a buckled chain, and then the chain will expel vortic…
In topological insulators doped with magnetic ions, spin-orbit coupling and ferromagnetism give rise to the quantum anomalous Hall effect. Here we show that in s-wave superconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling, magnetic impurity ions can generate topological vortices in the absence of external magnetic fields. Such vortices, dubbed quantum anomalous vortices, support robust Majorana zero-energy modes when superconductivity is induced in the topological surface states. We demonstrate that the zero-energy bound states observed in Fe(Te,Se) superconductors are possible realizations of the Ma…
