Björner-Ekedahl prove that general intervals $[e,w]$ in Bruhat order are "top-heavy", with at least as many elements in the $i$-th corank as the $i$-th rank. Well-known results of Carrell and of Lakshmibai-Sandhya give the equality case: $[e,w]$ is rank-symmetric if and only if the permutation $w$ avoids the patterns $3412$ and $4231$ and these are exactly those $w$ such that the Schubert variety $X_w$ is smooth.
In this paper we study the finer structure of rank-symmetric intervals $[e,w]$, beyond their rank functions. In particular, we show that these intervals are still "top-heavy" if one counts cover relations between different ranks. The equality case in this setting occurs when $[e,w]$ is self-dual as a poset; we characterize these $w$ by pattern avoidance and in several other ways.
We show that any lower Bruhat interval in a Coxeter group is a disjoint union of certain two-sided cosets as a consequence of Lifting Property and Subword Property. Furthermore, we describe these details in terms of Bruhat graphs, graded posets, and two-sided quotients altogether. For this purpose, we introduce some new ideas, quotient lower intervals and quotient Bruhat graphs.
We study the interplay between the discrete geometry of Bruhat poset intervals and subword complexes of finite Coxeter systems. We establish connections between the cones generated by cover labels for Bruhat intervals and of root configurations for subword complexes, culminating in the notion of brick polyhedra for general subword complexes.
The number of Bruhat intervals in Coxeter groups is finite, and for the first few lengths, the intervals were described up to an isomorphism by A. Hultman using the correspondence between Bruhat intervals and cell decompositions of a 2d sphere and straightforward computations. The main purpose of this paper consists of a description of the intervals in higher dimensions, as the Hultman's geometric method is hard to apply due to rapidly growing with length number of nonisomorphic intervals. We construct an invariant on subintervals in the Bruhat graphs, using their specific properties. This giv…
In this paper, we prove that if the dual of a Bruhat interval in a Weyl group is a zircon, then that interval is rationally smooth. Investigating when the converse holds, and drawing inspiration from conjectures by Delanoy, leads us to pose two conjectures. If true, they imply that for Bruhat intervals in type $A$, duals of smooth intervals, zircons, and being isomorphic to lower intervals are all equivalent. As a verification, we have checked our conjectures in types $A_n$, $n\leq 8$.
In [Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra {224} (2020), no 12, 106449], V. Mazorchuk and R. Mrđen (with some help by A. Hultman) prove that, given a Weyl group, the intersection of a Bruhat interval with a parabolic coset has a unique maximal element and a unique minimal element. We show that such intersections are actually Bruhat intervals also in the case of an arbitrary Coxeter group.
We provide a weaker version of the generalized lifting property which holds in complete generality for all finite Coxeter groups, and we use it to show that every parabolic Bruhat interval of a finite Coxeter group is a Coxeter matroid. We also describe some combinatorial properties of the associated polytopes.
In this paper we study those generic intervals in the Bruhat order of the symmetric group that are isomorphic to the principal order ideal of a permutation w, and consider when the minimum and maximum elements of those intervals are related by a certain property of their reduced words. We show that the property does not hold when w is a decomposable permutation, and that the property always holds when w is the longest permutation.
In this paper, we study the decomposition of Bruhat intervals in a Coxeter group with respect to cosets of a parabolic subgroup. Our main result is that the intersection of a lower Bruhat interval with a parabolic coset contains a unique maximal element. As an application, we give a decomposition formula for the Poincaré polynomial of a Coxeter group element. We also show that the fibers of standard parabolic projection maps on Schubert varieties are themselves Schubert varieties.
We study the non-negativity conjecture of the complete cd-index of a Bruhat interval defined by Billera and Brenti. For each cd-monomial M we construct a set of paths, such that if a "flip condition" is satisfied, then the number of these paths is the coefficient of the monomial M in the complete cd-index. When the monomial contains at most one d, then the condition follows from Dyer's proof of Cellini's conjecture. Hence the coefficients of these monomials are non-negative. We also relate the flip condition to shelling of Bruhat intervals.
We revisit $R$-polynomials with introducing the new idea ``shifted $R$-polynomials" (or Bruhat weight) for all Bruhat intervals in finite Coxeter groups. Then, we apply these polynomials to weighted counting of Bruhat paths. Further, we prove a new criterion of irregularity of lower intervals as analogy of Carrell-Peterson's and Dyer's results. Also, we present the upper bound of shifted $R$-polynomials for Bruhat intervals of fixed length by Jacobsthal numbers.
A permutation is called smooth if the corresponding Schubert variety is smooth. Gilboa and Lapid prove that in the symmetric group, multiplying the reflections below a smooth element $w$ in Bruhat order in a compatible order yields back the element $w$. We strengthen this result by showing that such a product in fact determines a saturated chain $e \to w$ in Bruhat order, and that this property characterizes smooth elements.
The higher Bruhat order is a poset of cubical tilings of a cyclic zonotope whose covering relations are cubical flips. For a 2-dimensional zonotope, the higher Bruhat order is isomorphic to a poset on commutation classes of reduced words for the longest element of a type A Coxeter system. For this case, we prove that the noncontractible intervals are in natural correspondence with the zonogonal tilings of a zonogon. Our proof uses some tools developed by Felsner and Weil to show that the two standard orderings on the rhombic tilings of a zonogon are identical.
An element $w$ of the Weyl group is called rationally smooth if the corresponding Schubert variety is rationally smooth. This happens exactly when the lower interval $[id,w]$ in the Bruhat order is palindromic. For each element $w$ of the Weyl group, we construct a certain hyperplane arrangement. After analyzing the palindromic intervals inside the maximal quotients, we use this result to show that the generating function for regions of the arrangement coincides with the Poincaré polynomial of the corresponding Schubert variety if and only if the Schubert variety is rationally smooth.
We study the appearance of notable interval structures -- lattices, modular lattices, distributive lattices, and boolean lattices -- in both the Bruhat and weak orders of Coxeter groups. We collect and expand upon known results for principal order ideals, including pattern characterizations and enumerations for the symmetric group. This segues naturally into a similar analysis for arbitrary intervals, although the results are less characterizing for the Bruhat order at this generality. In counterpoint, however, we obtain a full characterization for intervals starting at rank one in the symmetr…

In [E. Tsukerman and L. Williams, {\em Bruhat Interval Polytopes}, Advances in Mathematics, 285 (2015), 766-810] it is shown that every Bruhat interval of the symmetric group satisfies the so-called generalized lifting property. In this paper we show that a Coxeter group satisfies this property if and only if it is finite and simply-laced.
The weak Bruhat order on $ { \mathcal S }_n $ is the partial order $\prec$ so that $σ\prec τ$ whenever the set of inversions of $σ$ is a subset of the set of inversions of $τ$. We investigate the time complexity of computing the size of intervals with respect to $\prec$. Using relationships between two-dimensional posets and the weak Bruhat order, we show that the size of the interval $ [ σ_1, σ_2 ]$ can be computed in polynomial time whenever $σ_1^{-1} σ_2$ has bounded width (length of its longest decreasing subsequence) or bounded intrinsic width (maximum width of any non-monotone permutatio…
We give a simple characterization of special matchings in lower Bruhat intervals (that is, intervals starting from the identity element) of a Coxeter group. As a byproduct, we obtain some results on the action of special matchings.
We prove the conjecture of A. Postnikov that (A) the number of regions in the inversion hyperplane arrangement associated with a permutation $w\in \Sn$ is at most the number of elements below $w$ in the Bruhat order, and (B) that equality holds if and only if $w$ avoids the patterns 4231, 35142, 42513 and 351624. Furthermore, assertion (A) is extended to all finite reflection groups. A byproduct of this result and its proof is a set of inequalities relating Betti numbers of complexified inversion arrangements to Betti numbers of closed Schubert cells. Another consequence is a simple combinator…
Let u and v be permutations on n letters, with u <= v in Bruhat order. A Bruhat interval polytope Q_{u,v} is the convex hull of all permutation vectors z = (z(1), z(2),...,z(n)) with u <= z <= v. Note that when u=e and v=w_0 are the shortest and longest elements of the symmetric group, Q_{e,w_0} is the classical permutohedron. Bruhat interval polytopes were studied recently by Kodama and the second author, in the context of the Toda lattice and the moment map on the flag variety. In this paper we study combinatorial aspects of Bruhat interval polytopes. For example, we give an inequality descr…
The purpose of this paper is to provide a unified method for dealing with various 0-Hecke modules constructed using tableaux so far. To do this, we assign a $0$-Hecke module to each left weak Bruhat interval, called a weak Bruhat interval module. We prove that every indecomposable summand of the $0$-Hecke modules categorifying dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions, extended Schur functions, quasisymmetric Schur functions, and Young row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions is a weak Bruhat interval module. We further study embedding into the regular representation, induction product, restri…
Let $W$ be a finite reflection group. For a given $w \in W$, the following assertion may or may not be satisfied: (*) The principal Bruhat order ideal of $w$ contains as many elements as there are regions in the inversion hyperplane arrangement of $w$. We present a type independent combinatorial criterion which characterises the elements $w\in W$ that satisfy (*). A couple of immediate consequences are derived: (1) The criterion only involves the order ideal of $w$ as an abstract poset. In this sense, (*) is a poset-theoretic property. (2) For $W$ of type $A$, another characterisation of (*), …
We characterise the permutations pi such that the elements in the closed lower Bruhat interval [id,pi] of the symmetric group correspond to non-taking rook configurations on a skew Ferrers board. It turns out that these are exactly the permutations pi such that [id,pi] corresponds to a flag manifold defined by inclusions, studied by Gasharov and Reiner. Our characterisation connects the Poincare polynomials (rank-generating function) of Bruhat intervals with q-rook polynomials, and we are able to compute the Poincare polynomial of some particularly interesting intervals in the finite Weyl grou…
We give an explicit nonrecursive complete matching for the Hasse diagram of the strong Bruhat order of any interval in any Coxeter group. This yields a new derivation of the Mobius function, recovering a classical result due to Verma.

For two elements $v$ and $w$ of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ with $v\leq w$ in Bruhat order, the Bruhat interval polytope $Q_{v,w}$ is the convex hull of the points $(z(1),\ldots,z(n))\in \mathbb{R}^n$ with $v\leq z\leq w$. It is known that the Bruhat interval polytope $Q_{v,w}$ is the moment map image of the Richardson variety $X^{v^{-1}}_{w^{-1}}$. We say that $Q_{v,w}$ is \emph{toric} if the corresponding Richardson variety $X_{w^{-1}}^{v^{-1}}$ is a toric variety. We show that when $Q_{v,w}$ is toric, its combinatorial type is determined by the poset structure of the Bruhat interva…
In recent work, the authors used an order lowering operator $\nabla$, introduced by Stanley, to prove the strong Sperner property for the weak Bruhat order on the symmetric group. Hamaker, Pechenik, Speyer, and Weigandt interpreted $\nabla$ as a differential operator on Schubert polynomials and used this to prove a new identity for Schubert polynomials and a determinant conjecture of Stanley. In this paper we study a raising operator $Δ$ for the \emph{strong} Bruhat order, which is in many ways dual to $\nabla$. We prove a Schubert identity dual to that of Hamaker et al. and derive formulas fo…
The odd diagram of a permutation is a subset of the classical diagram with additional parity conditions. In this paper, we study classes of permutations with the same odd diagram, which we call odd diagram classes. First, we prove a conjecture relating odd diagram classes and 213- and 312-avoiding permutations. Secondly, we show that each odd diagram class is a Bruhat interval. Instrumental to our proofs is an explicit description of the Bruhat edges that link permutations in a class.
In this paper we consider the rank generating function of a separable permutation $π$ in the weak Bruhat order on the two intervals $[\text{id}, π]$ and $[π, w_0]$, where $w_0 = n,(n-1),..., 1$. We show a surprising result that the product of these two generating functions is the generating function for the symmetric group with the weak order. We then obtain explicit formulas for the rank generating functions on $[\text{id}, π]$ and $[π, w_0]$, which leads to the rank-symmetry and unimodality of the two graded posets.
Applying a classical theorem of Smith, we show that the poset property of being Gorenstein$^*$ over $\mathbb{Z}_2$ is inherited by the subposet of fixed points under an involutive poset automorphism. As an application, we prove that every interval in the Bruhat order on (twisted) involutions in an arbitrary Coxeter group has this property, and we find the rank function. This implies results conjectured by F. Incitti. We also show that the Bruhat order on the fixed points of an involutive automorphism induced by a Coxeter graph automorphism is isomorphic to the Bruhat order on the fixed subgrou…
We give a combinatorial interpretation of a Pieri formula for double Grothendieck polynomials in terms of an interval of the Bruhat order. Another description had been given by Lenart and Postnikov in terms of chain enumerations. We use Lascoux's interpretation of a product of Grothendieck polynomials as a product of two kinds of generators of the 0-Hecke algebra, or sorting operators. In this way we obtain a direct proof of the result of Lenart and Postnikov and then prove that the set of permutations occuring in the result is actually an interval of the Bruhat order.
We introduce two order relations on finite Coxeter groups which refine the absolute and the Bruhat order, and establish some of their main properties. In particular we study the restriction of these orders to noncrossing partitions and show that the intervals for these orders can be enumerated in terms of the cluster complex. The properties of our orders permit to revisit several results in Coxeter combinatorics, such as the Chapoton triangles and how they are related, the enumeration of reflections with full support, the bijections between clusters and noncrossing partitions.
Let (W,S) be a crystallographic Coxeter group (this includes all finite and affine Weyl groups), and J a subset of S. Let $W^J$ denote the set of minimal coset representatives modulo the parabolic subgroup $W_J$. For w in $W^J$, let $f^{w,J}_{i}$ denote the number of elements of length i below w in Bruhat order on $W^J$ (notation simplified to $f^{w}_{i}$ in the case when J=S). We show that $f^{w,J}_{i}$ is less than or equal to $f^{w,J}_{j}$ when i < j and j is less than or equal to the length of w minus i. Furthermore, we express when an initial and final interval of the f's is symmetric aro…

We show that for Bruhat intervals starting from the origin in simply-laced Coxeter groups the conjecture of Lusztig and Dyer holds, that is, the R-polynomials and the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials defined on [e,u] only depend on the isomorphism type of [e,u].
