In this article we present two mechanisms for deducing logarithmic quantitative unique continuation bounds for certain classes of integral operators. In our first method, expanding the corresponding integral kernels, we exploit the logarithmic stability of the moment problem. In our second method we rely on the presence of branch-cut singularities for certain Fourier multipliers. As an application we present quantitative Runge approximation results for the operator $ L_s(D) = \sum\limits_{j=1}^{n}(-\partial_{x_j}^2)^{s} + q$ with $s\in [\frac{1}{2},1)$ and $q\in L^{\infty}$ acting on functions on $\mathbb{R}^n$.
We investigate the quantitative unique continuation of solutions to higher order elliptic equations with singular coefficients. Quantitative unique continuation described by the vanishing order is a quantitative form of strong unique continuation property. We characterize the vanishing order of solutions for higher order elliptic equations in terms of the norms of coefficient functions in their respective Lebesgue spaces. New versions of quantitative Carleman estimates are established.
In this paper, we establish a Hölder-type quantitative estimate of unique continuation for solutions to the heat equation with Coulomb potentials in either a bounded convex domain or a $C^2$-smooth bounded domain. The approach is based on the frequency function method, as well as some parabolic-type Hardy inequalities.
In this paper we establish some new $L^{2}-L^{2}$ Carleman estimates for the Baouendi-Grushin operators $\mathscr{B}_γ$, in (1.1) below. We apply such estimates to obtain: (i) an extension of the Bourgain-Kenig quantitative unique continuation; (ii) the strong unique continuation property for some degenerate sublinear equations.
We study the strong unique continuation property backwards in time for the nonlocal equation in $\mathbb{R}^{n} \times \mathbb{R}$ \begin{equation}\label{one} (\partial_t - Δ)^{s} u = V(x,t)u \end{equation} for $s \in (0,1)$. Our main result Theorem 1.2 can be thought of as the nonlocal counterpart of the result obtained by Poon for the case when $s=1$. In order to prove Theorem 1.2 we develop the regularity theory of the extension problem for the equation above. With such theory in hands we establish: i) a basic monotonicity result for an adjusted frequency function which plays a central role…
In this paper we prove a quantitative form of the strong unique continuation property for the Lamé system when the Lamé coefficients $μ$ is Lipschitz and $λ$ is essentially bounded in dimension $n\ge 2$. This result is an improvement of our earlier result \cite{lin5} in which both $μ$ and $λ$ were assumed to be Lipschitz.
The main result of the present paper consists in a quantitative estimate of unique continuation at the boundary for solutions to the wave equation. Such estimate is the sharp quantitative counterpart of the following strong unique continuation property: let $u$ be a solution to the wave equation that satisfies an homogeneous Robin condition on a portion $S$ of the boundary and the restriction of $u_{\mid S}$ on $S$ is flat on a segment $\{0\}\times J$ with $0\in S$ then $u_{\mid S}$ vanishes in a neighborhood of $\{0\}\times J$.
In this paper we describe some recent works on quantitative unique continuation for elliptic, parabolic and dispersive equations. The elliptic results are joint work with J.Bourgain, while the remainder of the works discussed are joint works with L.Escauriaza, G.Ponce and L.Vega.
In this paper we establish the \emph{space-like} strong unique continuation for nonlocal equations of the type $(\partial_t - Δ)^s u= Vu$, for $0<s <1$. The proof of our main result, Theorem 1.1, is achieved via a conditional elliptic type doubling property for solutions to the appropriate extension problem, followed by a blowup analysis.
We obtain explicit estimates on the stability of the unique continuation for a linear system of hyperbolic equations. In particular our result applies to the elasticity system and also the Maxwell system. As an application, we study the kinematic inverse rupture problem of determining the jump in displacement and the friction force at the rupture surface, and we obtain new features on the stable unique continuation up to the rupture surface.
The classical Hopf's lemma can be reformulated as uniqueness of continuation result. We aim in the present work to quantify this property. We show precisely that if a solution $u$ of a divergence form elliptic equation attains its maximum at a boundary point $x_0$ then both $L^1$-norms of $u-u(x_0)$ on the domain and on the boundary are bounded, up to a multiplicative constant, by the exterior normal derivative at $x_0$.
In this paper, we obtain a quantitative estimate of unique continuation and an observability inequality from an equidistributed set for solutions of the diffusion equation in the whole space RN. This kind of observability indicates that the total energy of solutions can be controlled by the energy localized in a measurable subset, which is equidistributed over the whole space. The proof of our results is based on an interesting reduction method [18, 22], as well as the propagation of smallness for the gradient of solutions to elliptic equations [24].
In this article, we investigate the quantitative unique continuation properties of complex-valued solutions to drift equations in the plane. We consider equations of the form $Δu + W \cdot \nabla u = 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$, where $W = W_1 + i W_2$ with each $W_j$ real-valued. Under the assumptions that $W_j \in L^{q_j}$ for some $q_1 \in [2, \infty]$, $q_2 \in (2, \infty]$, and $W_2$ exhibits rapid decay at infinity, we prove new global unique continuation estimates. This improvement is accomplished by reducing our equations to vector-valued Beltrami systems. Our results rely on a novel order of…
We address the quantitative uniqueness properties of the solutions of the parabolic equation $ \partial_t u - Δu = w_j (x,t) \partial_j u + v(x,t) u $ where $v$ and $w$ are bounded. We prove that for solutions $u$, the order of vanishing is bounded by $C(\Vert v\Vert_{L^\infty}^{2/3}+\Vert w\Vert_{L^\infty}^2)$ matching the upper bound previously established in the elliptic case. in the elliptic case.
In this article we prove quantitative unique continuation results for wave operators of the form $\partial$ 2 t -- div(c(x)$\nabla$$\bullet$) where the scalar coefficient c is discontinuous across an interface of codimension one in a bounded domain or on a compact Riemannian manifold. We do not make any assumptions on the geometry of the interface or on the sign of the jumps of the coefficient c. The key ingredient is a local Carleman estimate for a wave operator with discontinuous coefficients. We then combine this estimate with the recent techniques of Laurent-L{é}autaud [LL19] to propagate …
We investigate the quantitative unique continuation properties of solutions to second order elliptic equations with singular lower order terms. The main theorem presents a quantification of the strong unique continuation property for $Δ+ V$. That is, for any non-trivial $u$ that solves $Δu + V u = 0$ in some open, connected subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$, we estimate the vanishing order of solutions in terms of the $L^t$-norm of $V$. Our results apply to all $t > \frac n 2$ and $n \ge 3$. With these maximal order of vanishing estimates, we employ a scaling argument to produce quantitative unique con…
In these lectures we present some useful techniques to study quantitative properties of solutions of elliptic PDEs. Our aim is to outline a proof of a recent result on propagation of smallness. The ideas are also useful in the study of the zero sets of eigenfunctions of Laplace-Beltrami operator and we discuss the connection. Some basic facts about second order elliptic PDEs in divergent form are collected in the Appendix at the end of the notes.
We consider surfaces which minimize a nonlocal perimeter functional and we discuss their interior regularity and rigidity properties, in a quantitative and qualitative way, and their (perhaps rather surprising) boundary behavior. We present at least a sketch of the proofs of these results, in a way that aims to be as elementary and self contained as possible.
In this paper we will review the main results concerning the issue of stability for the determination unknown boundary portion of a thermic conducting body from Cauchy data for parabolic equations. We give detailed and selfcontained proofs. We prove that such problems are severely ill-posed in the sense that under a priori regularity assumptions on the unknown boundaries, up to any finite order of differentiability, the continuous dependence of unknown boundary from the measured data is, at best, of logarithmic type.
In this paper, we prove two unique continuation results for second order elliptic equations with Robin boundary conditions on $C^{1,1}$ domains. The first one is a sharp vanishing order estimate of Robin problems with Lipschitz coefficients and differentiable, sign-changing potentials. This generalizes the result for the "Robin eigenfunctions" in [26], which deals with the case with constant potentials. The second result is a unique continuation result from the boundary -- any non-trivial solution cannot vanish at infinite order from the boundary or vanish on an open subset on the boundary. Su…
In this article, we first prove quantitative estimates associated to the unique continuation theorems for operators with partially analytic coefficients of Tataru, Robbiano-Zuily and Hörmander. We provide local stability estimates that can be propagated, leading to global ones. Then, we specify the previous results to the wave operator on a Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{M}$ with boundary. For this operator, we also prove Carleman estimates and local quantitative unique continuation from and up to the boundary $\partial \mathcal{M}$. This allows us to obtain a global stability estimate from any…
In this article we determine bounds on the maximal order of vanishing for eigenfunctions of a generalized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map (which is associated with fractional Schrödinger equations) on a compact, smooth Riemannian manifold, $(M,g)$, without boundary. Moreover, with only slight modifications these results generalize to equations with $C^1$ potentials. Here Carleman estimates are a key tool. These yield a quantitative three balls inequality which implies quantitative bulk and boundary doubling estimates and hence leads to the control of the maximal order of vanishing. Using the boundary…
Quantitative unique continuation principles for multiscale structures are an important ingredient in a number applications, e.g. random Schrödinger operators and control theory. We review recent results and announce new ones regarding quantitative unique continuation principles for partial differential equations with an underlying multiscale structure. They concern Schrödinger and second order elliptic operators. An important feature is that the estimates are scale free and with quantitative dependence on parameters. These unique continuation principles apply to functions satisfying certain `r…
In this article we study the strong unique continuation property for solutions of higher order (variable coefficient) fractional Schrödinger operators. We deduce the strong unique continuation property in the presence of subcritical and critical Hardy type potentials. In the same setting, we address the unique continuation property from measurable sets of positive Lebesgue measure. As applications we prove the antilocality of the higher order fractional Laplacian and Runge type approximation theorems which have recently been exploited in the context of nonlocal Calderón type problems. As our m…
The main results of the present paper consist in some quantitative estimates for solutions to the wave equation $\partial^2_{t}u-\mbox{div}\left(A(x)\nabla_x u\right)=0$. Such estimates imply the following strong unique continuation properties: (a) if $u$ is a solution to the the wave equation and $u$ is flat on a segment $\{x_0\}\times J$ on the $t$ axis, then $u$ vanishes in a neighborhood of $\{x_0\}\times J$. (b) Let u be a solution of the above wave equation in $Ω\times J$ that vanishes on a a portion $Z\times J$ where $Z$ is a portion of $\partialΩ$ and $u$ is flat on a segment $\{x_0\}\…
The question of unique continuation of harmonic functions in a domain $Ω$ $\subset$ R d with boundary $\partial$$Ω$, satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions and with normal derivatives vanishing on a subset $ω$ of the boundary is a classical problem. When $ω$ contains an open subset of the boundary it is a consequence of Carleman estimates (uniqueness for second order elliptic operators across an hypersurface). The case where $ω$ is a set of positive (d -- 1) dimensional measure has attracted a lot of attention, see e.g. [10, 3, 15], where qualitative results have been obtained in various sit…
We investigate inverse problems in the determination of leading coefficients for nonlocal parabolic operators, by knowing the corresponding Cauchy data in the exterior space-time domain. The key contribution is that we reduce nonlocal parabolic inverse problems to the corresponding local inverse problems with the lateral boundary Cauchy data. In addition, we derive a new equation and offer a novel proof of the unique continuation property for this new equation. We also build both uniqueness and non-uniqueness results for both nonlocal isotropic and anisotropic parabolic Calderón problems, resp…
We study an asymptotic limit of Vlasov type equation with nonlocal interaction forces where the friction terms are dominant. We provide a quantitative estimate of this large friction limit from the kinetic equation to a continuity type equation with a nonlocal velocity field, the so-called aggregation equation, by employing $2$-Wasserstein distance. By introducing an intermediate system, given by the pressureless Euler equations with nonlocal forces, we can quantify the error between the spatial densities of the kinetic equation and the pressureless Euler system by means of relative entropy ty…
We investigate unique continuation properties and asymptotic behaviour at boundary points for solutions to a class of elliptic equations involving the spectral fractional Laplacian. An extension procedure leads us to study a degenerate or singular equation on a cylinder, with a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition on the lateral surface and a non homogeneous Neumann condition on the basis. For the extended problem, by an Almgren-type monotonicity formula and a blow-up analysis, we classify the local asymptotic profiles at the edge where the transition between boundary conditions occurs. Pa…
In this paper, we establish a globally quantitative estimate of unique continuation at one time point for solutions of parabolic equations with Neumann boundary conditions in bounded domains. Our proof is mainly based on Carleman commutator estimates and a global frequency function argument, which is motivated from a recent work [5]. As an application, we obtain an observability inequality from measurable sets in time for all solutions of the above equations.
We consider elliptic differential operators on either the entire Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ or on subsets consisting of a cube $Λ_L$ of integer length $L$. For eigenfunctions of the operator, and more general solutions of elliptic differential quations, we derive several quantitative unique continuation results. The first result is of local nature and estimates the vanishing order of a solution. The second is a sampling result and compares the $L^2$-norm of a solution over a union of equidistributed $δ$-balls in space with the $L^2$-norm on the entire space. In the case where the space $\m…
We establish quantitative properties of minimizers and stable sets for nonlocal interaction functionals, including the $s$-fractional perimeter as a particular case. On the one hand, we establish universal $BV$-estimates in every dimension $n\ge 2$ for stable sets. Namely, we prove that any stable set in $B_1$ has finite classical perimeter in $B_{1/2}$, with a universal bound. This nonlocal result is new even in the case of $s$-perimeters and its local counterpart (for classical stable minimal surfaces) was known only for simply connected two-dimensional surfaces immersed in $\mathbb R^3$. On…
We prove quantitative unique continuation results for solutions of $-Δu + W\cdot \nabla u + Vu = λu$, where $λ\in \mathbb{C}$ and $V$ and $W$ are complex-valued decaying potentials that satisfy $|V(x)| \lesssim \langle x\rangle^{-N}$ and $|W(x)| \lesssim \langle x\rangle^{-P}$. For $M(R) = \inf_{|x_0| = R}||u||_{L^2(B_1(x_0))}$, we show that if the solution $u$ is non-zero, bounded, and $u(0) = 1$, then $M(R) \gtrsim \exp(-C R^{β_0}(\log R)^{A( R)})$, where $β_0 = \max\{2 - 2P, \frac{4-2N}{3}, 1\}$. Under certain conditions on $N$, $P$ and $λ$, we construct examples (some of which are in the s…
We study various qualitative and quantitative (global) unique continuation properties for the fractional discrete Laplacian. We show that while the fractional Laplacian enjoys striking rigidity properties in the form of (global) unique continuation properties, the fractional discrete Laplacian does not enjoy these in general. While discretization thus counteracts the strong rigidity properties of the continuum fractional Laplacian, by discussing quantitative forms of unique continuation, we illustrate that these properties can be recovered if exponentially small (in the lattice size) correctio…
We characterize the long time behaviour of a discrete-in-time approximation of the volume preserving fractional mean curvature flow. In particular, we prove that the discrete flow starting from any bounded set of finite fractional perimeter converges exponentially fast to a single ball. As an intermediate result we establish a quantitative Alexandrov type estimate in the fractional setting for normal deformations of a ball. Finally, we provide existence for flat flows as limit points of the discrete flow when the time discretization parameter tends to zero.
Assuming that the Lamé moduli $μ$, $λ$ are $C^{\tiny{1}}$ and $n\geq2$, we prove quantitative estimates of a weak sense of strong unique continuation for thesolutions of the n-dimensional Lamé system of the form of three spheres inequalities.

In this note we give an elementary proof of the space-like real analyticity of solutions to a degenerate evolution problem that arises in the study of fractional parabolic operators of the type $(\partial_t - div_x(B(x)\nabla_x))^s$, $0<s<1$. Our primary interest is in the so-called \emph{extension variable}. We show that weak solutions that are even in such variable, are in fact real-analytic in the totality of the space variables. As an application of this result we prove the weak unique continuation property for nonlocal parabolic operators of the type above, where $B(x)$ is a uniformly ell…
