In this article, we investigate the quantitative unique continuation properties of complex-valued solutions to drift equations in the plane. We consider equations of the form $Δu + W \cdot \nabla u = 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$, where $W = W_1 + i W_2$ with each $W_j$ real-valued. Under the assumptions that $W_j \in L^{q_j}$ for some $q_1 \in [2, \infty]$, $q_2 \in (2, \infty]$, and $W_2$ exhibits rapid decay at infinity, we prove new global unique continuation estimates. This improvement is accomplished by reducing our equations to vector-valued Beltrami systems. Our results rely on a novel order of vanishing estimate combined with a finite iteration scheme.
In this paper, Hardy's uncertainty principle and unique continuation properties of abstract Schrödinger equations in vector-valued classes are obtained
Theories of monochromatic high-frequency electromagnetic fields have been designed by Felsen, Kravtsov, Ludwig and others with a view to portraying features that are ignored by geometrical optics. These theories have recourse to eikonals that encode information on both phase and amplitude -- in other words, are complex-valued. The following mathematical principle is ultimately behind the scenes: any geometric optical eikonal, which conventional rays engender in some light region, can be consistently continued in the shadow region beyond the relevant caustic, provided an alternative eikonal, en…
Here, the Morgan type uncertainty principle and unique continuation properties of abstract Schredinger equations with time dependent potentials are obtained in Hilbert space valued function classes. The equations include linear operator in abstract Hilbert spaces H dependent on space variables. So, by selecting appropriate spaces H and operators, we derive unique continuation properties for numerous classes of Schrödinger type equations and its systems, which occur in a wide variety of physical systems.
In this paper, Hardy's uncertainty principle and unique continuation properties of Schrodinger equations with operator potentials in Hilbert space-valued classes are obtained. Since the Hilbert space H and linear operators are arbitrary, by choosing the appropriate spaces and operators we obtain numerous classes of Schrodinger type equations and its finite and infinite many systems which occur in a wide variety of physical systems.
We construct a strong Feller process associated with $-Δ+ σ\cdot \nabla$, with drift $σ$ in a wide class of measures (weakly form-bounded measures, e.g. combining weak $L^d$ and Kato class measure singularities), by exploiting a quantitative dependence of the smoothness of the domain of an operator realization of $-Δ+ σ\cdot \nabla$ generating a holomorphic $C_0$-semigroup on $L^p(\mathbb R^d)$, $p>d-1$, on the value of the form-bound of $σ$. Our method admits extension to other types of perturbations of $-Δ$ or $(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}$, e.g. to yield new $L^p$-regularity results for Schrödinger ope…
In this paper, Morgan type uncertainty principle and unique continuation properties of abstract Schrödinger equations with time dependent potentials in vector-valued classes are obtained. The equation involves a possible linear operators considered in the Hilbert spaces. In this paper, we investigate the unique continuation property for the inequality $|\bar\partial u| \le V|u|$, where $u$ is a vector-valued function from a domain in $\mathbb C^n$ to $\mathbb C^N$, and the potential $V\in L^2$. We show that the strong unique continuation property holds when $n=1$, and the weak unique continuation property holds when $n\ge 2$. In both cases, the $L^2$ integrability condition on the potential is optimal.
We obtain Dini and Schauder type estimates for concave fully nonlinear nonlocal parabolic equations of order $σ\in (0,2)$ with rough and non-symmetric kernels, and drift terms. We also study such linear equations with only measurable coefficients in the time variable, and obtain Dini type estimates in the spacial variable. This is a continuation of the work [10, 11] by the first and last authors.
In this note, we study the behaviour of Lebesgue norms $\|v(\cdot,t)\|_p$ of solutions $v$ to the Cauchy problem for the Stokes system with drift $u$, which is supposed to be a divergence free smooth vector valued function satisfying a scale invariant condition.
We construct an example of a smooth map $\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C}^2$ which vanishes to infinite order at the origin, and such that the ratio of the norm of the $\bar z$ derivative to the norm of the $z$ derivative also vanishes to infinite order. This gives a counterexample to strong unique continuation for a vector valued analogue of the Beltrami equation.
In this article, we continue our investigation into the unique continuation properties of real-valued solutions to elliptic equations in the plane. More precisely, we make another step towards proving a quantitative version of Landis' conjecture by establishing unique continuation at infinity estimates for solutions to equations of the form $- Δu + V u = 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$, where $V = V_+ - V_-$, $V_+ \in L^\infty$, and $V_-$ is a non-trivial function that exhibits exponential decay at infinity. The main tool in the proof of this theorem is an order of vanishing estimate in combination with …
We consider uniformly parabolic equations and inequalities of second order in the non-divergence form with drift \[-u_{t}+Lu=-u_{t}+\sum_{ij}a_{ij}D_{ij}u+\sum b_{i}D_{i}u=0\,(\geq0,\,\leq0)\] in some domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We prove a variant of Aleksandrov-Bakelman-Pucci-Krylov-Tso estimate with $L^{p}$ norm of the inhomogeneous term for some number $p<n+1$. Based on it, we derive the growth theorems and the interior Harnack inequality. In this paper, we will only assume the drift $b$ is in certain Morrey spaces defined below which are critical under the parabolic scaling but not…
We prove quantitative unique continuation results for solutions of $Δw - k^2 w = V w + W\cdot \nabla w$ in a neighborhood of infinity, where $k > 0$, and $V$ and $W$ are complex-valued decaying potentials that satisfy $|V(x)| \lesssim |x|^{-N}$ and $|W(x)| \lesssim |x|^{-P}$ for some $N, P > 1$. For $M(R, 4n/k) = \inf \{||w||_{L^2(B_{4n/k}(x_0))} : |x_0| = R \}$, we show that if the solution $w$ is non-zero, bounded, and normalized, then $M(R, 4n/k) \gtrsim \exp(-kR - G \log R)$, where $G > \frac{n-1}{2}$ is a constant. An examination of radial solutions to $Δw - k^2 w = V w + W\cdot \nabla w$…
We prove the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for stochastic differential equations in which the drift coefficient is square integrable in time variable and Hölder continuous in space variable. Moreover, we prove that the unique strong solution has a continuous modification, which is $β$-Hölder continuous in space variable for every $β\in (0,1)$, and as an $L^2(Ω\times (0,T))$ valued function, it is differentiable as well.
In this paper we study nonnegative, measure valued solutions of the initial value problem for one-dimensional drift-diffusion equations when the nonlinear diffusion is governed by an increasing $C^1$ function $β$ with $\lim_{r\to +\infty} β(r)<+\infty$. By using tools of optimal transport, we will show that this kind of problems is well posed in the class of nonnegative Borel measures with finite mass $m$ and finite quadratic momentum and it is the gradient flow of a suitable entropy functional with respect to the so called $L^2$-Wasserstein distance. Due to the degeneracy of diffusion for lar…
We study nonnegative, measure-valued solutions to nonlinear drift type equations modelling concentration phenomena related to Bose-Einstein particles. In one spatial dimension, we prove existence and uniqueness for measure solutions. Moreover, we prove that all solutions blow up in finite time leading to a concentration of mass only at the origin, and the concentrated mass absorbs increasingly the mass converging to the total mass as time goes to infinity. Our analysis makes a substantial use of independent variable scalings and pseudo-inverse functions techniques.
A solution of the elliptic type PDE of the 4th order, being a reduction of the Eqs. of stress function corresponding to any case of plane anisotropy which is not equal to isotropy (proved by S.\,G.~Mikhlin), is described in terms of hypercomplex `analytic' functions with values in two-dimensional semisimple algebra over the field of complex numbers in case when a domain under consideration is bounded and simply-connected. A boundary value problem on finding a function which satisfies this PDE in the considered domain (bounded and simply-connected) and permits continuations (to the boundary) of…
We prove quantitative unique continuation results for solutions of $-Δu + W\cdot \nabla u + Vu = λu$, where $λ\in \mathbb{C}$ and $V$ and $W$ are complex-valued decaying potentials that satisfy $|V(x)| \lesssim \langle x\rangle^{-N}$ and $|W(x)| \lesssim \langle x\rangle^{-P}$. For $M(R) = \inf_{|x_0| = R}||u||_{L^2(B_1(x_0))}$, we show that if the solution $u$ is non-zero, bounded, and $u(0) = 1$, then $M(R) \gtrsim \exp(-C R^{β_0}(\log R)^{A( R)})$, where $β_0 = \max\{2 - 2P, \frac{4-2N}{3}, 1\}$. Under certain conditions on $N$, $P$ and $λ$, we construct examples (some of which are in the s…
Let $B_{R}$ be the ball in the euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ with center 0 and radius $R$ and let $f$ be a complex-valued, infinitely differentiable function on $B_{R}.$ We show that the Laplace-Fourier series of $f$ has a holomorphic extension which converges compactly in the Lie ball $\hat {B_{R}}$ in the complex space $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ when one assumes a natural estimate for the Laplace-Fourier coefficients.
We shall prove new contraction properties of general transportation costs along nonnegative measure-valued solutions to Fokker-Planck equations in $R^d$, when the drift is a monotone (or $λ$-monotone) operator. A new duality approach to contraction estimates has been developed: it relies on the Kantorovich dual formulation of optimal transportation problems and on a variable-doubling technique. The latter is used to derive a new comparison property of solutions of the backward Kolmogorov (or dual) equation. The advantage of this technique is twofold: it directly applies to distributional solut…
In this paper we show uniqueness of the conductivity for the quasilinear Calderón's inverse problem. The nonlinear conductivity depends, in a nonlinear fashion, of the potential itself and its gradient. Under some structural assumptions on the direct problem, a real-valued conductivity allowing a small analytic continuation to the complex plane induces a unique Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DN) map. The method of proof considers some complex-valued, linear test functions based on a point of the boundary of the domain, and a linearization of the DN map placed at these particular set of solutions.
We develop a detailed regularity theory of $-Δ+b\cdot\nabla$ in $L^p(\mathbb R^d)$, for a wide class of vector fields. The $L^p$-theory allows us to construct associated strong Feller process in $C_\infty(\mathbb R^d)$. Our starting object is an operator-valued function, which, we prove, coincides with the resolvent of an operator realization of $-Δ+ b\cdot \nabla$, the generator of a holomorphic $C_0$-semigroup on $L^p(\mathbb R^d)$. Then the very form of the operator-valued function yields crucial information about smoothness of the domain of the generator.
This is a chapter from PhD Thesis by Stefano Biagi (advisor: prof. A. Bonfiglioli). We overview existing results showing that it is possible to generalize the classical Hardy's Inequality to more general linear partial differential operators (PDOs, in the sequel), possibly degenerate-elliptic, of the following quasi-divergence form $$ \mathcal{L} = \frac{1}{w(x)}\sum_{i = 1}^N\frac{\partial}{\partial x_i} \left(\sum_{j = 1}^Nw(x)a_{ij}(x)\frac{\partial}{\partial x_j}\right), \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^N, $$ where $w \in C^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^N,\mathbb{R})$ is a (smooth and) strictly positive funct…
In this paper we derive quantitative uniqueness estimates at infinity for solutions to an elliptic equation with unbounded drift in the plane. More precisely, let $u$ be a real solution to $Δu+W\cdot\nabla u=0$ in ${\mathbf R}^2$, where $W$ is real vector and $\|W\|_{L^p({\mathbf R}^2)}\le K$ for $2\le p<\infty$. Assume that $\|u\|_{L^{\infty}({\mathbf R}^2)}\le C_0$ and satisfies certain a priori assumption at $0$. Then $u$ satisfies the following asymptotic estimates at $R\gg 1$ \[ \inf_{|z_0|=R}\sup_{|z-z_0|<1}|u(z)|\ge \exp(-C_1R^{1-2/p}\log R)\quad\text{if}\quad 2<p<\infty \] and \[ \inf_…
This paper revisits a homogenization problem studied by L. Tartar related to a tridimensional Stokes equation perturbed by a drift (connected to the Coriolis force). Here, a scalar equation and a two-dimensional Stokes equation with a $L^2$-bounded oscillating drift are considered. Under higher integrability conditions the Tartar approach based on the oscillations test functions method applies and leads to a limit equation with an extra zero-order term. When the drift is only assumed to be equi-integrable in $L^2$, the same limit behaviour is obtained. However, the lack of integrability makes …
The large-time asymptotics of the density matrix solving a drift-diffusion-Poisson model for the spin-polarized electron transport in semiconductors is proved. The equations are analyzed in a bounded domain with initial and Dirichlet boundary conditions. If the relaxation time is sufficiently small and the boundary data is close to the equilibrium state, the density matrix converges exponentially fast to the spinless near-equilibrium steady state. The proof is based on a reformulation of the matrix-valued cross-diffusion equations using spin-up and spin-down densities as well as the perpendicu…
Wave fields obeying the 2D Helmholtz equation on branched surfaces (Sommerfeld surfaces) are studied. Such surfaces appear naturally as a result of applying the reflection method to diffraction problems with straight scatterers bearing ideal boundary conditions. This is for example the case for the classical canonical problems of diffraction by a half-line or a segment. In the present work, it is shown that such wave fields admit an analytical continuation into the domain of two complex coordinates. The branch sets of such continuation are given and studied in detail. For a generic scattering …
We consider linear second order nonvariational partial differential operators of the kind a_{ij}X_{i}X_{j}+X_{0}, on a bounded domain of R^{n}, where the X_{i}'s (i=0,1,2,...,q, n>q+1) are real smooth vector fields satisfying Hörmander's condition and a_{ij} (i,j=1,2,...,q) are real valued, bounded measurable functions, such that the matrix {a_{ij}} is symmetric and uniformly positive. We prove that if the coefficients a_{ij} are Hölder continuous with respect to the distance induced by the vector fields, then local Schauder estimates on X_{i}X_{j}u, X_{0}u hold; if the coefficients belong to …

In this paper we consider the following SDE with distributional drift $b$: $$ {\rm d} X_t=σ(X_t){\rm d} B_t+b(X_t){\rm d} t,\ X_0=x\in{\mathbb R}^d, $$ where $σ$ is a bounded continuous and uniformly non-degenerate $d\times d$-matrix-valued function, $B$ is a $d$-dimensional standard Brownian motion. Let $α\in(0,\frac{1}{2}]$, $p\in(\frac{d}{1-α},\infty)$ and $β\in[α,1]$, $q\in(\frac{d}β,\infty)$. Assume $\|({\mathbb I}-Δ)^{-α/2}b\|_p+\|(-Δ)^{β/2}σ\|_q<\infty$. We show the existence and uniqueness of martingale solutions to the above SDE, and obtain sharp two-sided and gradient estimates of th…
