The large-time asymptotics of the density matrix solving a drift-diffusion-Poisson model for the spin-polarized electron transport in semiconductors is proved. The equations are analyzed in a bounded domain with initial and Dirichlet boundary conditions. If the relaxation time is sufficiently small and the boundary data is close to the equilibrium state, the density matrix converges exponentially fast to the spinless near-equilibrium steady state. The proof is based on a reformulation of the matrix-valued cross-diffusion equations using spin-up and spin-down densities as well as the perpendicular component of the spin-vector density, which removes the cross-diffusion terms. Key elements of the proof are time-uniform positive lower and upper bounds for the spin-up and spin-down densities, derived from the De Giorgi-Moser iteration method, and estimates of the relative free energy for the spin-up and spin-down densities.
Motivated by the critical dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation, we prove that drift-diffusion equations with L^2 initial data and minimal assumptions on the drift are locally Holder continuous. As an application we show that solutions of the quasi-geostrophic equation with initial L^2 data and critical diffusion (-Δ)^{1/2}, are locally smooth for any space dimension.
We show that there exist solutions of drift-diffusion equations in two dimensions with divergence-free super-critical drifts, that become discontinuous in finite time. We consider classical as well as fractional diffusion. However, in the case of classical diffusion and time-independent drifts we prove that solutions satisfy a modulus of continuity depending only on the local $L^1$ norm of the drift, which is a super-critical quantity.
We investigate the differentiability issue of the drift-diffusion equation with nonlocal Lévy-type diffusion at either supercritical or critical type cases. Under the suitable conditions on the drift velocity and the forcing term in terms of the spatial Hölder regularity, we prove that the vanishing viscosity solution is differentiable with some Hölder continuous derivatives for any positive time.
In this paper we establish the uniqueness of a solution to a stationary convection-diffusion equation in divergence form with an exponentially summable generalized divergence-free drift.
We prove global existence of strong solutions to the drift-diffusion-Maxwell system in two space dimension. We also provide an exponential growth estimate for the $H^1$ norm of the solution.
We prove an existence result for nonlinear diffusion equations in the presence of a nonlocal density-dependent drift which is not necessarily potential. The proof is constructive and based on the Helmholtz decomposition of the drift and a splitting scheme. The splitting scheme combines transport steps by the divergence-free part of the drift and semi-implicit minimization steps à la Jordan-Kinderlherer-Otto to deal with the potential part.
We prove global Sobolev regularity and pointwise upper bounds for the gradient of transition densities associated with second order differential operators in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with unbounded diffusion, drift and potential terms.
This paper focuses on a drift-diffusion system subjected to boundedly non dissipative Robin boundary conditions. A general existence result with large initial conditions is established by using suitable L1, L2 and trace estimates. Finally, two examples coming from the corrosion and the self-gravitation model are analyzed.
We consider an equation with drift and either critical or supercritical fractional diffusion. Under a regularity assumption for the vector field that is marginally stronger than what is required for Holder continuity of the solutions, we prove that the solution becomes immediately differentiable with Holder continuous derivatives. Therefore, the solutions to the equation are classical.
The initial-value problem for the drift-diffusion equation arising from the model of semiconductor device simulations is studied. The dissipation on this equation is given by the fractional Laplacian. When the exponent of the fractional Laplacian is large, large-time behavior of solutions is known. However, when the exponent is small, the perturbation methods used in the preceding works would not work. Large-time behavior of solutions to the drift-diffusion equation with small exponent is discussed. Particularly, the asymptotic expansion of solutions with high-order is derived.
In this paper, we consider a drift-diffusion system describing the corrosion of an iron based alloy in a nuclear waste repository. In comparison with the classical drift-diffusion system arising in the modeling of semiconductor devices, the originality of the corrosion model lies in the boundary conditions which are of Robin type and induce an additional coupling between the equations. We prove the existence of a weak solution by passing to the limit on a sequence of approximate solutions given by a semi-discretization in time.
This paper considers a class of nonlinear, degenerate drift- diffusion equations. We study well-posedness and regularity properties of the solutions, with the goal to achieve uniform Hölder regularity in terms of $L^p$-bound on the drift vector field. A formal scaling argument yields that the threshold for such estimates is $p=d$, while our estimates are for $p>d+\frac{4}{d+2}$. On the other hand we are able to show by a series of examples that one needs $p>d$ for such estimates, even for divergence free drift.
In this paper we give an affirmative answer to an open question mentioned in [Le Bris and Lions, Comm. Partial Differential Equations 33 (2008), 1272--1317], that is, we prove the well-posedness of the Fokker-Planck type equations with Sobolev diffusion coefficients and BV drift coefficients.
In this paper we address the regularity issues of drift-diffusion equation with nonlocal diffusion, where the diffusion operator is in the realm of stable-type Lévy operator and the velocity field is defined from the considered quantity by a zero-order pseudo-differential operator. Through using the method of nonlocal maximum principle in a unified way, we prove the eventual regularity result in the supercritical type cases and the global regularity at some logarithmically supercritical cases. The feature of these results is that the time after which the solution is smoothly regular in the sup…
We study analytically and numerically a model describing front propagation of a KPP reaction in a fluid flow. The model consists of coupled one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations with different drift coefficients. The main rigorous results give lower bounds for the speed of propagation that are linear in the drift coefficient, which agrees very well with the numerical observations. In addition, we find the optimal constant in a functional inequality of independent interest used in the proof.
We are interested in some properties related to the solutions of non-local diffusion equations with divergence free drift. Existence, maximum principle and a positivity principle are proved. In order to study Holder regularity, we apply a method that relies in the Holder-Hardy spaces duality and in the molecular characterisation of local Hardy spaces. In these equations, the diffusion is given by Lévy-type operators with an associated Lévy measure satisfying some upper and lower bounds.
We prove pathwise uniqueness for an abstract stochastic reaction-diffusion equation in Banach spaces. The drift contains a bounded Hölder term; in spite of this, due to the space-time white noise it is possible to prove pathwise uniqueness. The proof is based on a detailed analysis of the associated Kolmogorov equation. The model includes examples not covered by the previous works based on Hilbert spaces or concrete SPDEs.
We introduce a notion of viscosity solutions for a nonlinear degenerate diffusion equation with a drift potential. We show that our notion of solutions coincide with the weak solutions defined via integration by parts. As an application of the viscosity solutions theory, we show that the free boundary uniformly converges to the equilibrium as time grows. In the case of a convex potential, an exponential rate of free boundary convergence is obtained.
The relaxation-time limit from the Quantum-Navier-Stokes-Poisson system to the quantum drift-diffusion equation is performed in the framework of finite energy weak solutions. No assumptions on the limiting solution are made. The proof exploits the suitably scaled a priori bounds inferred by the energy and BD entropy estimates. Moreover, it is shown how from those estimates the Fisher entropy and free energy estimates associated to the diffusive evolution are recovered in the limit. As a byproduct, our main result also provides an alternative proof for the existence of finite energy weak soluti…
This paper is devoted to existence and uniqueness results for classes of nonlinear diffusion equations (or systems) which may be viewed as regular perturbations of Wasserstein gradient flows. First, in the case. where the drift is a gradient (in the physical space), we obtain existence by a semi-implicit Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto scheme. Then, in the nonpotential case, we derive existence from a regularization procedure and parabolic energy estimates. We also address the uniqueness issue by a displacement convexity argument.
In this note we study a fractional Poisson-Nernst-Planck equation modeling a semiconductor device. We prove several decay estimates for the Lebesgue and Sobolev norms in one, two and three dimensions. We also provide the first term of the asymptotic expansion as $t\rightarrow\infty$.
The self-similar asymptotics for solutions to the drift-diffusion equation with fractional dissipation, coupled to the Poisson equation, is analyzed in the whole space. It is shown that in the subcritical and supercritical cases, the solutions converge to the fractional heat kernel with algebraic rate. The proof is based on the entropy method and leads to a decay rate in the $L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$ norm. The technique is applied to other semilinear equations with fractional dissipation.
We provide several regularity results for non-homogeneous drift-diffusion equations with applications to general dissipative SQG. Our results unify in a rather simple way several previously known results. We build the estimates on an algebraic identity (for the refined energy argument) which relates any integral operator with pure powers of the laplacian.
This paper is devoted to the study of the asymptotic behaviors of the minimal speed of propagation of pulsating traveling fronts solving the Fisher-KPP reaction-advection-diffusion equation within either a large drift, a mixture of large drift and small reaction, or a mixture of large drift and large diffusion. We consider a periodic heterogenous framework and we use the formula of Berestycki, Hamel and Nadirashvili \cite{bhn2} for the minimal speed of propagation to prove the asymptotics in any space dimension $N.$ We express the limits as the maxima of certain variational quantities over the…
We study the global existence of solutions to a one-dimensional drift-diffusion equation with logistic term, generalizing the classical parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel aggregation equation arising in mathematical biology. In particular, we prove that there exists a global weak solution, if the order of the fractional diffusion $α\in (1-c_1, 2]$, where $c_1>0$ is an explicit constant depending on the physical parameters present in the problem (chemosensitivity and strength of logistic damping). Furthermore, in the range $1-c_2<α\leq 2$ with $0<c_2<c_1$, the solution is globally smooth. Let us e…
In this work, we consider a one-dimensional It{ô} diffusion process X t with possibly nonlinear drift and diffusion coefficients. We show that, when the diffusion coefficient is known, the drift coefficient is uniquely determined by an observation of the expectation of the process during a small time interval, and starting from values X 0 in a given subset of R. With the same type of observation, and given the drift coefficient, we also show that the diffusion coefficient is uniquely determined. When both coefficients are unknown, we show that they are simultaneously uniquely determined by the…

In this paper, we study local uniform continuity of nonnegative weak solutions to degenerate diffusion-drift equations in the form \[ u_{t} = Δu^{m} + \nabla\cdot \left( B (x,t) \, u\right), \quad \text{for } m \geq 1 \] assuming a vector field $B \in L^{p}_t L^{q}_{x}$. Regarding local Hölder continuity, we provide a sharp condition on $p$ and $q$, which is referred to as the subcritical region. In the critical region, the divergence-free condition is essential to providing uniform continuity which depends on the modulus continuity of $B$.
We address the persistence of Hölder continuity for weak solutions of the linear drift-diffusion equation with nonlocal pressure \[ u_t + b \cdot \grad u - \lap u = \grad p,\qquad \grad\cdot u =0 \] on $[0,\infty) \times \R^{n}$, with $n \geq 2$. The drift velocity $b$ is assumed to be at the critical regularity level, with respect to the natural scaling of the equations. The proof draws on Campanato's characterization of Hölder spaces, and uses a maximum-principle-type argument by which we control the growth in time of certain local averages of $u$. We provide an estimate that does not depend…
We investigate a recombination-drift-diffusion model coupled to Poisson's equation modelling the transport of charge within certain types of semiconductors. In more detail, we study a two-level system for electrons and holes endowed with an intermediate energy level for electrons occupying trapped states. As our main result, we establish an explicit functional inequality between relative entropy and entropy production, which leads to exponential convergence to equilibrium. We stress that our approach is applied uniformly in the lifetime of electrons on the trap level assuming that this lifetim…
Quantum drift-diffusion equations for a two-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit interactions of Rashba type are formally derived from a collisional Wigner equation. The collisions are modeled by a Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook-type operator describing the relaxation of the electron gas to a local equilibrium that is given by the quantum maximum entropy principle. Because of non-commutativity properties of the operators, the standard diffusion scaling cannot be used in this context, and a hydrodynamic time scaling is required. A Chapman-Enskog procedure leads, up to first order in the relaxation t…
The existence of global weak solutions to a coupled spin drift-diffusion and Maxwell-Landau-Lifshitz system is proved. The equations are considered in a two-dimensional magnetic layer structure and are supplemented with Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. The spin drift-diffusion model for the charge density and spin density vector is the diffusion limit of a spinorial Boltzmann equation for a vanishing spin polarization constant. The Maxwell-Landau-Lifshitz system consists of the time-dependent Maxwell equations for the electric and magnetic fields and of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equati…
We study a reaction-diffusion-convection problem with nonlinear drift posed in a domain with periodically arranged obstacles. The non-linearity in the drift is linked to the hydrodynamic limit of a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) governing a population of interacting particles crossing a domain with obstacle. Because of the imposed large drift scaling, this nonlinearity is expected to explode in the limit of a vanishing scaling parameter. As main working techniques, we employ two-scale formal homogenization asymptotics with drift to derive the corresponding upscaled model e…
We analyse conditions for an evolution equation with a drift and fractional diffusion to have a Holder continuous solution. In case the diffusion is of order one or more, we obtain Holder estimates for the solution for any bounded drift. In the case when the diffusion is of order less than one, we require the drift to be a Holder continuous vector field in order to obtain the same type of regularity result.
Existence and local-uniqueness theorems for weak solutions of a system consisting of the drift-diffusion-Poisson equations and the Poisson-Boltzmann equation, all with stochastic coefficients, are presented. For the numerical approximation of the expected value of the solution of the system, we develop a multi-level Monte-Carlo (MLMC) finite-element method (FEM) and we analyze its rate of convergence and its computational complexity. This allows to find the optimal choice of discretization parameters. Finally, numerical results show the efficiency of the method. Applications are, among others,…
We deal with the problem of separation of time-scales and filamentation in a linear drift-diffusion problem posed on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^2$. The passive scalar considered is stirred by an incompressible flow with radial symmetry. We identify a time-scale, much faster than the diffusive one, at which mixing happens along the streamlines, as a result of the interaction between transport and diffusion. This effect is also known as enhanced dissipation. For power-law circular flows, this time-scale only depends on the behavior of the flow at the origin. The proofs are based on an adaptatio…
An asymptotic expansion at spatial infinity of a weak time-periodic solution to the Navier-Stokes equations with a non-zero drift term in the three-dimensional whole-space is carried out. The asymptotic profile is explicitly identified and expressed in terms of the well-known Oseen fundamental solution. A pointwise estimate is given for the remainder term.
We study the heat kernel of the supercritical fractional diffusion equation with the drift in the critical Hölder space. We show that such a drift can have point irregularities strong enough to make the heat kernel vanish at a point for all $t>0$.
We study a class of nonlocal-diffusion equations with drifts, and derive a priori $Φ$-Hölder estimate for the solutions by using a purely probabilistic argument, where $Φ$ is an intrinsic scaling function for the equation.
We establish the well-posedness of stochastic differential equations possessing degenerate diffusions and singular drifts. We prove that SDEs defined on the homogeneous Carnot group, whose hypoelliptic diffusion part is given by the horizontal Brownian motion, admit a unique strong solution for a large class of singular drifts. It considerably generalizes the classical well-posedness results of singular SDEs with non-degenerate diffusions. It also provides an intermediate result between the Cauchy-Lipschitz theorem in ordinary differential equations and the result proved by Krylov and Röckner …
In this work we investigate the well-posedness for difussion equations associated to subelliptic pseudo-differential operators on compact Lie groups. The diffusion by strongly elliptic operators is considered as a special case and in particular the fractional diffusion with respect to the Laplacian. The general case is studied within the Hörmander classes associated to a sub-Riemannian structure on the group (encoded by a Hörmander system of vector fields). Applications to diffusion equations for fractional sub-Laplacians, fractional powers of more general subelliptic operators, and the corres…
The dynamics of a reaction-diffusion-advection benthic-drift population model that links changes in the flow regime and habitat availability with population dynamics is studied. In the model, the stream is divided into drift zone and benthic zone, and the population is divided into two interacting compartments, individuals residing in the benthic zone and individuals dispersing in the drift zone. The benthic population growth is assumed to be of strong Allee effect type. The influence of flow speed and individual transfer rates between zones on the population persistence and extinction is cons…
We study evolution equations of drift-diffusion type when various parameters are random. Motivated by applications in pedestrian dynamics, we focus on the case when the total mass is, due to boundary or reaction terms, not conserved. After providing existence and stability for the deterministic problem, we consider uncertainty in the data. Instead of a sensitivity analysis we propose to measure functionals of the solution, so-called quantities of interest (QoI), by involving scalarizing statistics. For these summarizing statistics we provide probabilistic continuity results.
We consider the asymptotic behaviour of the solution of one dimensional stochastic differential equations and Langevin equations in periodic backgrounds with zero average. We prove that in several such models, there is generically a non vanishing asymptotic velocity, despite of the fact that the average of the background is zero.
The asymptotic analysis of a linear high-field Wigner-BGK equation is developped by a modified Chapman-Enskog procedure. By an expansion of the unknown Wigner function in powers of the Knudsen number $ε$, evolution equations are derived for the terms of zeroth and first order in $ε$. In particular, it is obtained a quantum drift-diffusion equation for the position density, which is corrected by field-dependent terms of order $ε$. Well-posedness and regularity of the approximate problems are established, and it is proved that the difference between exact and asymptotic solutions is of order $ε^…
We consider the problem of quantum and stochastic confinement for drift-diffusion equations on domains $ Ω\subset \mathbb R^d$. We obtain various sufficient conditions on the behavior of the coefficients near the boundary of $Ω$ which ensure the essential self-adjointness or stochastic completeness of the symmetric form of the drift-diffusion operator, $-\frac{1}{ρ_\infty}\,\nabla\cdot ρ_\infty\mathbb D\nabla$. The proofs are based on the method developed in [29] for quantum confinement on bounded domains in $\mathbb R^d$. In particular for stochastic confinement we combine the Liouville prope…
We consider the problem of essential self-adjointness of the drift-diffusion operator $H=-\frac{1}ρ\nabla\cdot ρ\mathbb D\nabla +V$ on domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ with $\mathcal{C}^2$-boundary $\partial Ω$ and for large classes of coefficients $ρ,\; \mathbb{D}$ and $V$. We give criteria showing how the behavior as $x \rightarrow \partial Ω$ of these coefficients balances to ensure essential self-adjointness of $H$. On the way we prove a weak anisotropic Hardy inequality which is of independent interest.
In this paper, we consider an unipolar degenerated drift-diffusion system where the relation between the concentration of the charged species $c$ and the chemical potential $h$ is $h(c)=\log \frac{c}{1-c}$. We design four different finite volume schemes based on four different formulations of the fluxes. We provide a stability analysis and existence results for the four schemes. The convergence proof with respect to the discretization parameters is established for two of them. Numerical experiments illustrate the behaviour of the different schemes.
We exhibit a large class of Lyapunov functionals for nonlinear drift-diffusion equations with non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. These are generalizations of large deviation functionals for underlying stochastic many-particle systems, the zero range process and the Ginzburg-Landau dynamics, which we describe briefly. As an application, we prove linear inequalities between such an entropy-like functional and its entropy production functional for the boundary-driven porous medium equation in a bounded domain with positive Dirichlet conditions: this implies exponential rates of relaxa…
