Motivated by the critical dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation, we prove that drift-diffusion equations with L^2 initial data and minimal assumptions on the drift are locally Holder continuous. As an application we show that solutions of the quasi-geostrophic equation with initial L^2 data and critical diffusion (-Δ)^{1/2}, are locally smooth for any space dimension.
In this article I study Hölder regularity for solutions of a transport equation based in the dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation. Following a recent idea of A. Kiselev and F. Nazarov, I will use the molecular characterization of local Hardy spaces in order to obtain information on Hölder regularity of such solutions. This will be done by following the evolution of molecules in a backward equation.
We prove the global existence of classical solutions to a class of forced drift-diffusion equations with $L^2$ initial data and divergence free drift velocity $\{u^ν\}_{ν_\ge0}\subset L^\infty_t BMO^{-1}_x$, and we obtain strong convergence of solutions as the viscosity $ν$ vanishes. We then apply our results to a family of active scalar equations which includes the three dimensional magneto-geostrophic $\{$MG$^ν\}_{ν\ge0}$ equation that has been proposed by Moffatt in the context of magnetostrophic turbulence in the Earth's fluid core. We prove the existence of a compact global attractor $\{\…
In this paper, we consider the two-dimensional surface quasi-geostrophic equation with fractional horizontal dissipation and fractional vertical thermal diffusion. Global existence of classical solutions is established when the dissipation powers are restricted to a suitable range. Due to the nonlocality of these 1D fractional operators, some of the standard energy estimate techniques no longer apply, to overcome this difficulty, we establish several anisotropic embedding and interpolation inequalities involving fractional derivatives. In addition, in order to bypass the unavailability of the …
We prove the well posedness: global existence, uniqueness and regularity of the solutions, of a class of d-dimensional fractional stochastic active scalar equations. This class includes the stochastic, dD-quasi-geostrophic equation, $ d\geq 1$, fractional Burgers equation on the circle, fractional nonlocal transport equation and the 2D-fractional vorticity Navier-Stokes equation. We consider the multiplicative noise with locally Lipschitz diffusion term in both, the free and no free divergence modes. The random noise is given by an $Q-$Wiener process with the covariance $Q$ being either of fin…
We use De Giorgi techniques to prove Hölder continuity of weak solutions to a class of drift-diffusion equations, with $L^2$ initial data and divergence free drift velocity that lies in $L_{t}^{\infty}BMO_{x}^{-1}$. We apply this result to prove global regularity for a family of active scalar equations which includes the advection-diffusion equation that has been proposed by Moffatt in the context of magnetostrophic turbulence in the Earth's fluid core.
In this paper, we show that the global solution of the surface anisotropic two-dimensional quasi-geostrophic equation with fractional horizontal dissipation and vertical thermal diffusion established by the author in [2] is bounded in Sobolev spaces uniformly with respect to time.
In a recent article by Gravejat and Smets, it is built smooth solutions to the inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation that have the form of a traveling wave. In this article we work back on their construction to provide solution to a more general class of quasi-geostrophic equation where the half-laplacian is replaced by any fractional laplacian.
This paper is devoted to the global (in time) regularity problem for a family of active scalar equations with fractional dissipation. Each component of the velocity field $u$ is determined by the active scalar $θ$ through $\mathcal{R} Λ^{-1} P(Λ) θ$ where $\mathcal{R}$ denotes a Riesz transform, $Λ=(-Δ)^{1/2}$ and $P(Λ)$ represents a family of Fourier multiplier operators. The 2D Navier-Stokes vorticity equations correspond to the special case $P(Λ)=I$ while the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation to $P(Λ) =Λ$. We obtain the global regularity for a class of equations for which $P(Λ)$ and …
We compute the sharp time decay rates of the solutions of the IVP for quasi-geostrophic equation and the Boussinesq model, subject to fractional dissipation. Moreover, we explicitly identify the asymptotic profiles, the kernel of the $α$ stable processes, which are analogues of the Oseen vortices.
The initial value problem for the two dimensional dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation derived from geophisical fluid dynamics is studied. The dissipation of this equation is given by the fractional Laplacian. It is known that the half Laplacian is a critical dissipation for the quasi-geostrophic equation. In this paper, far field asymptotics of solutions are given in the critical and the supercritical cases.
We construct families of smooth travelling-wave solutions to the inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation (SQG). These solutions can be viewed as the equivalents for this equation of the vortex anti-vortex pairs in the context of the incompressible Euler equation. Our argument relies on the stream function formulation and eventually amounts to solving a fractional nonlinear elliptic equation by variational methods.
In this article we apply the method used in the recent elegant proof by Kiselev, Nazarov and Volberg of the well-posedness of critically dissipative 2D quasi-geostrophic equation to the super-critical case. We prove that if the initial value is smooth and periodic, and $\left\| \nabla θ_0 \right\|_{L^{\infty}}^{1 - 2 s} \left\| θ_0 \right\|_{L^{\infty}}^{2 s}$ is small, where $s$ is the power of the fractional Laplacian, then no finite time singularity will occur for the super-critically dissipative 2D quasi-geostrophic equation.
We study the three dimensional active scalar equation called the magneto-geostropic equation which was proposed by Moffatt and Loper as a model for the geodynamo processes in the Earth's fluid core. When the viscosity of the fluid is positive, the constitutive law that relates the drift velocity $u(x,t)$ and the scalar temperature $θ(x,t)$ produces two orders of smoothing. We study the implications of this property. For example, we prove that in the case of the non-diffusive ($\varepsilon_κ=0$) active scalar equation, initial data $θ_0\in L^3$ implies the existence of unique, global weak solut…
In this paper, we focus on the two-dimensional surface quasi-geostrophic equation with fractional horizontal dissipation and vertical thermal diffusion which represents a general case of the classical surface quasi-geostrophic equation. On the one hand, we will show the local existence and uniqueness of the solution in Sobolev space $H^{2-2α}(\mathbb{R}^2)\cap H^{2-2β}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, which is the critical space in the classical case. Furthermore, we will demonstrate that the solution is global even when the initial data is very small. Finally, we will study the asymptotic representation of ou…
In this paper, we focus on the two-dimensional surface quasi-geostrophic equation with fractional horizontal dissipation and fractional vertical thermal diffusion. On the one hand, when the dissipation powers are restricted to a suitable range, the global regularity of the surface quasi-geostrophic equation is obtained by some anisotropic embedding and interpolation inequalities involving fractional derivatives. One the one hand, we obtain the optimal large time decay estimates for global weak solutions by an anisotropic interpolation inequality. Moreover, based on the argument adopted in esta…
We prove nonlinear lower bounds and commutator estimates for the Dirichlet fractional Laplacian in bounded domains. The applications include bounds for linear drift-diffusion equations with nonlocal dissipation and global existence of weak solutions of critical surface quasi-geostrophic equations.
Via probabilistic convex integration, we prove non-uniqueness in law of the two-dimensional surface quasi-geostrophic equations forced by random noise of additive type. In its proof we work on the equation of the momentum rather than the temperature, which is new in the study of the stochastic surface quasi-geostrophic equations. We also generalize the classical Calder$\acute{\mathrm{o}}$n commutator estimate to the case of fractional Laplacians.
Motivated by an equation arising in magnetohydrodynamics, we address the well-posedness theroy for the non-diffusive magneto-geostrophic equation. Namely, an active scalar equation in which the divergence-free drift velocity is one derivative more singular that the active scalar. In \cite{Friedlander-Vicol_3}, the authors prove that the non-diffusive equation is ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard in Sobolev spaces, but locally well posed in spaces of analytic functions. Here, we give an example of a steady state that is nonlinearly stable for periodic perturbations with initial data localized …
We address the well-posedness theory for the magento-geostrophic equation, namely an active scalar equation in which the divergence-free drift velocity is one derivative more singular than the active scalar. In the presence of supercritical fractional diffusion given by (-Δ)^γ, where 0<γ<1, we discover that for γ>1/2 the equations are locally well-posed, while for γ<1/2 they are ill-posed, in the sense that there is no Lipschitz solution map. The main reason for the striking loss of regularity when γgoes below 1/2 is that the constitutive law used to obtain the velocity from the active scalar …
This paper establishes several existence and uniqueness results for two families of active scalar equations with velocity fields determined by the scalars through very singular integrals. The first family is a generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation with the velocity field $u$ related to the scalar $θ$ by $u=\nabla^\perpΛ^{β-2}θ$, where $1<β\le 2$ and $Λ=(-Δ)^{1/2}$ is the Zygmund operator. The borderline case $β=1$ corresponds to the SQG equation and the situation is more singular for $β>1$. We obtain the local existence and uniqueness of classical solutions, the global existence…
We consider parabolic PDEs associated with fractional type operators drifted by non-linear singular first order terms. When the drift enjoys some boundedness properties in appropriate Lebesgue and Besov spaces, we establish by exploiting a priori Besov-type estimates, the H{ö}lder continuity of the solutions. In particular, we handle the almost critical case in whole generality.
We consider an equation with drift and either critical or supercritical fractional diffusion. Under a regularity assumption for the vector field that is marginally stronger than what is required for Holder continuity of the solutions, we prove that the solution becomes immediately differentiable with Holder continuous derivatives. Therefore, the solutions to the equation are classical.
In this note we examine the dynamical role played by inertial forces on the surface temperature (or buoyancy) variance in strongly rotating, stratified flows with uniform potential vorticity fields. In particular, using a dynamic, multi-scale averaging process, we identify a sufficient condition for the existence of a direct temperature variance cascade across an inertial range. While the result is consistent with the physical and numerical theories of SQG turbulence, the condition which triggers the cascade is more exotic, a fact reflecting the non-locality introduced by fractional dissipatio…
The self-similar asymptotics for solutions to the drift-diffusion equation with fractional dissipation, coupled to the Poisson equation, is analyzed in the whole space. It is shown that in the subcritical and supercritical cases, the solutions converge to the fractional heat kernel with algebraic rate. The proof is based on the entropy method and leads to a decay rate in the $L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$ norm. The technique is applied to other semilinear equations with fractional dissipation.
The initial-value problem for the drift-diffusion equation arising from the model of semiconductor device simulations is studied. The dissipation on this equation is given by the fractional Laplacian. When the exponent of the fractional Laplacian is large, large-time behavior of solutions is known. However, when the exponent is small, the perturbation methods used in the preceding works would not work. Large-time behavior of solutions to the drift-diffusion equation with small exponent is discussed. Particularly, the asymptotic expansion of solutions with high-order is derived.
In this paper, we first generalize a new energy approach, developed by Y. Guo and Y. Wang \cite{GW12}, in the framework of homogeneous Besov spaces for proving the optimal temporal decay rates of solutions to the fractional power dissipative equation, then we apply this approach to the supercritical and critical quasi-geostrophic equation and the critical Keller-Segel system. We show that the negative Besov norm of solutions is preserved along time evolution, and obtain the optimal temporal decay rates of the spatial derivatives of solutions by the Fourier splitting approach and the interpolat…
We establish the $C^{1+γ}$-Hölder regularity of the regular free boundary in the stationary obstacle problem defined by the fractional Laplace operator with drift in the subcritical regime. Our method of the proof consists in proving a new monotonicity formula and an epiperimetric inequality. Both tools generalizes the original ideas of G. Weiss for the classical obstacle problem to the framework of fractional powers of the Laplace operator with drift. Our study continues the earlier research, where two of us established the optimal interior regularity of solutions.
We prove existence, uniqueness and optimal regularity of solutions to the stationary obstacle problem defined by the fractional Laplacian operator with drift, in the subcritical regime. We localize our problem by considering a suitable extension operator introduced by L. Caffarelli and L. Silvestre. The structure of the extension equation is different from the one considered by L. Caffarelli, S. Salsa and L. Silvestre in their study of the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian without drift, in that the obstacle function has less regularity, and exhibits some singularities. To take int…
We establish Ambrosetti -Prodi type results for periodic solutions of one -dimensional nonlinear problems with drift term and drift -less whose principal operator is the fractional Laplacian of order $s\in(0,1)$. We establish conditions for the existence and nonexistence of solutions. The proofs of the existence results are based on the sub-supersolution method combined with topological degree type arguments. We also establish a priori bounds in order to get multiplicity results. We also prove that the solutions are $C^{1,α}$ under some regularity assumptions in the nonlinearities, that is, th…
For the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation $$\left\{ \begin{aligned} & \partial_t θ+u\cdot \nabla θ=0, \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T), \\ & u=\nabla^\perp ψ, \quad ψ= (-Δ)^{-s}θ\quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T) , \end{aligned} \right. $$ $0<s<1$, we consider for $k\ge1$ the problem of finding a family of $k$-vortex solutions $θ_\varepsilon(x,t)$ such that as $\varepsilon\to 0$ $$ θ_\varepsilon(x,t) \rightharpoonup \sum_{j=1}^k m_jδ(x-ξ_j(t)) $$ for suitable trajectories for the vortices $x=ξ_j(t)$. We find such solutions in the special cases of vortices travell…
This work focuses on drift-diffusion equations with fractional dissipation $(-Δ)^α$ in the regime $α\in (1/2,1)$. Our main result is an a priori Hölder estimate on smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem, starting from initial data with finite energy. We prove that for some $β\in (0,1)$, the $C^β$ norm of the solution depends only on the size of the drift in critical spaces of the form $L^{q}_{t}(BMO^{-γ}_{x})$ with $q>2$ and $γ\in (0,2α-1]$, along with the $L^{2}_{x}$ norm of the initial datum. The proof uses the Caffarelli/Vasseur variant of De Giorgi's method for non-local equations.
We investigate the Calderón problem for the fractional Schrödinger equation with drift, proving that the unknown drift and potential in a bounded domain can be determined simultaneously and uniquely by an infinite number of exterior measurements. In particular, in contrast to its local analogue, this nonlocal problem does \emph{not} enjoy a gauge invariance. The uniqueness result is complemented by an associated logarithmic stability estimate under suitable apriori assumptions. Also uniqueness under finitely many \emph{generic} measurements is discussed. Here the genericity is obtained through…
We analyse conditions for an evolution equation with a drift and fractional diffusion to have a Holder continuous solution. In case the diffusion is of order one or more, we obtain Holder estimates for the solution for any bounded drift. In the case when the diffusion is of order less than one, we require the drift to be a Holder continuous vector field in order to obtain the same type of regularity result.
We study the higher regularity of free boundaries in obstacle problems for integro-differential operators with drift, like $(-Δ)^s +b\cdot\nabla$, in the subcritical regime $s>\frac{1}{2}$. Our main result states that once the free boundary is $C^1$ then it is $C^\infty$, whenever $s\not\in\mathbb{Q}$. In order to achieve this, we establish a fine boundary expansion for solutions to linear nonlocal equations with drift in terms of the powers of distance function. Quite interestingly, due to the drift term, the powers do not increase by natural numbers and the fact that $s$ is irrational plays …
We consider a one-dimensional nonlocal nonlinear equation of the form: $\partial_t u = (Λ^{-α} u)\partial_x u - νΛ^βu$ where $Λ=(-\partial_{xx})^{\frac 12}$ is the fractional Laplacian and $ν\ge 0$ is the viscosity coefficient. We consider primarily the regime $0<α<1$ and $0\le β\le 2$ for which the model has nonlocal drift, fractional dissipation, and captures essential features of the 2D $α$-patch models. In the critical and subcritical range $1-α\le β\le 2$, we prove global wellposedness for arbitrarily large initial data in Sobolev spaces. In the full supercritical range $0 \le β<1-α$, we …
Recently, using DiGiorgi-type techniques, Caffarelli and Vasseur showed that a certain class of weak solutions to the drift diffusion equation with initial data in $L^2$ gain Hölder continuity provided that the BMO norm of the drift velocity is bounded uniformly in time. We show a related result: a uniform bound on BMO norm of a smooth velocity implies uniform bound on the $C^β$ norm of the solution for some $β>0.$ We use elementary tools involving control of Hölder norms using test functions. In particular, our approach offers a third proof of the global regularity for the critical surface qu…
We study the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian with drift, $\min\left\{(-Δ)^s u + b \cdot \nabla u,\,u -φ\right\} = 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, in the critical regime $s = \frac{1}{2}$. Our main result establishes the $C^{1,α}$ regularity of the free boundary around any regular point $x_0$, with an expansion of the form \[ u(x)-φ(x) = c_0\big((x-x_0)\cdot e\big)_+^{1+\tildeγ(x_0)} + o\left(|x-x_0|^{1+\tildeγ(x_0)+σ}\right), \] \[ \tildeγ(x_0) = \frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}π \arctan (b\cdot e), \] where $e \in \mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ is the normal vector to the free boundary, $σ>0$, and $c_0> 0$. We al…
We study the heat kernel of the supercritical fractional diffusion equation with the drift in the critical Hölder space. We show that such a drift can have point irregularities strong enough to make the heat kernel vanish at a point for all $t>0$.
We establish sharp two-sided bounds on the heat kernel of the fractional Laplacian, perturbed by a drift having critical-order singularity, by transferring it to appropriate weighted space with singular weight.
In this paper we prove the local existence and uniqueness of solutions for a class of stochastic fractional partial differential equations driven by multiplicative noise. We also establish that for this class of equations adding linear multiplicative noise provides a regularizing effect: the solutions will not blow up with high probability if the initial data is sufficiently small, or if the noise coefficient is sufficiently large. As applications our main results are applied to various types of SPDE such as stochastic reaction-diffusion equations, stochastic fractional Burgers equation, stoch…
In this work we investigate the well-posedness for difussion equations associated to subelliptic pseudo-differential operators on compact Lie groups. The diffusion by strongly elliptic operators is considered as a special case and in particular the fractional diffusion with respect to the Laplacian. The general case is studied within the Hörmander classes associated to a sub-Riemannian structure on the group (encoded by a Hörmander system of vector fields). Applications to diffusion equations for fractional sub-Laplacians, fractional powers of more general subelliptic operators, and the corres…

In this paper, we establish Gevrey class regularity of solutions to a class of dissipative equations with an analytic nonlinearity in the whole space. This generalizes the results of Ferrari and Titi in the periodic space case with initial data in $L^2-$based Sobolev spaces to the $L^p$ setting and in the whole space. Our generalization also includes considering rougher initial data, in negative Sobolev spaces in some cases including the Navier-Stokes and the subcritical quasi-geostrophic equations, and allowing the dissipation operator to be a fractional Laplacian. Moreover, we derive global …
