This paper considers $L_2$ and BIBO stability and stabilization issues for systems with time-varying delays which can be of retarded or neutral type. An important role is played by a nominal system with fixed delays which are close to the time-varying ones. Under stability or stabilizability conditions of this nominal system, sufficient conditions are given in order to ensure similar properties for the system with time-varying delays.
We consider the input/output-stability of linear time-invariant single-input/single-output systems in terms of singularities of the transfer function F(s) in Laplace domain. The approach is based on complex analysis. A fairly general class of transfer functions F(s) is considered which can roughly be characterized by two properties: (1) F(s) is meromorphic with a finite number of poles in the open right half plane and (2), on the imaginary axes, F(s) may have at most a finite number of poles and branch points. For this class of systems, a complete and thorough characterization of BIBO stabilit…
We develop a linear systems theory that coincides with the existing theories for continuous and discrete dynamical systems, but that also extends to linear systems defined on nonuniform time domains. The approach here is based on generalized Laplace transform methods (e.g. shifts and convolution) from our recent work \cite{DaGrJaMaRa}. We study controllability in terms of the controllability Gramian and various rank conditions (including Kalman's) in both the time invariant and time varying settings and compare the results. We also explore observability in terms of both Gramian and rank condit…
We consider the problem of constructing Lyapunov functions for linear differential equations with delays. For such systems it is known that exponential stability implies the existence of a positive Lyapunov function which is quadratic on the space of continuous functions. We give an explicit parametrization of a sequence of finite-dimensional subsets of the cone of positive Lyapunov functions using positive semidefinite matrices. This allows stability analysis of linear time-delay systems to be formulated as a semidefinite program.
Monotone systems comprise an important class of dynamical systems that are of interest both for their wide applicability and because of their interesting mathematical properties. It is known that under the property of quasimonotonicity time-delayed systems become monotone, and some remarkable properties have been reported for such systems. These include, for example, the fact that for linear systems global asymptotic stability of the undelayed system implies global asymptotic stability for the delayed system under arbitrary bounded delays. Nevertheless, extensions to nonlinear systems have thu…
We present a condition for delay-independent stability of a class of nonlinear positive systems. This result applies to systems that are not necessarily monotone and extends recent work on cooperative nonlinear systems.
We study delay-independent stability in nonlinear models with a distributed delay which have a positive equilibrium. Such models frequently occur in population dynamics and other applications. In particular, we construct a relevant difference equation such that its stability implies stability of the equation with a distributed delay and a finite memory. This result is, generally speaking, incorrect for systems with infinite memory. If the relevant difference equation is unstable, we describe the general delay-independent attracting set and also demonstrate that the equation with a distributed …
Stability analysis is performed for a linear differential equation with two delays. Geometric arguments show that when the two delays are rationally dependent, then the region of stability increases. When the ratio has the form 1/n, this study finds the asymptotic shape and size of the stability region. For example, a delay ration of 1/3 asymptotically produces a stability region 44.3% larger than any nearby delay ratios, showing extreme sensitivity in the delays. The study provides a systematic and geometric approach to finding the eigenvalues on the boundary of stability for this delay diffe…
We prove a necessary and sufficient criterion for the exponential stability of periodic solutions of delay differential equations with large delay. We show that for sufficiently large delay the Floquet spectrum near criticality is characterized by a set of curves, which we call asymptotic continuous spectrum, that is independent on the delay.
The paper deals with the global asymptotic stability of general nonlinear time-delay systems with delay-dependent impulses through the Lyapunov-Krasovskii method. We derive a unified stability criterion which can be applied to a variety of impulsive systems. The cases when each of the continuous dynamics and the impulsive component is either stabilizing or destabilizing are investigated. Both theoretically and numerically, we demonstrate that the obtained result is more general than those existing in the literature.
Delay mass-action systems provide a model of chemical kinetics when past states influence the current dynamics. In this work, we provide a graph-theoretic condition for delay stability, i.e., linear stability independent of both rate constants and delay parameters. In particular, the result applies when the system has no delay, implying asymptotic stability for the ODE system. The graph-theoretic condition is about cycles in the directed species-reaction graph of the network, which encodes how different species in the system interact.
In this paper, the stability analysis of quaternion-valued neural networks (QVNNs) with both leakage delay and additive time-varying delays is proposed. By employing the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional method and fully considering the relationship between time-varying delays and upper bounds of delays, some sufficient criteria are derived based on reciprocally convex method and several inequality techniques. The stability criteria are established in two forms: quaternion-valued linear matrix inequalities (QVLMIs) and complex-valued linear matrix inequalities (CVLMIs), in which CVLMIs can be dir…
We consider a linear scalar delay differential equation (DDE), consisting of two arbitrary distributed time delays. We formulate necessary conditions for stability of the trivial solution which are independent of the distributions. For the case of one discrete and one gamma distributed delay, we give an explicit description of the region of stability of the trivial solution and discuss how this depends on the model parameters.
The problem considered in the paper is exponential stability of linear equations and global attractivity of nonlinear non-autonomous equations which include a non-delay term and one or more delayed terms. First, we demonstrate that introducing a non-delay term with a non-negative coefficient can destroy stability of the delay equation. Next, sufficient exponential stability conditions for linear equations with concentrated or distributed delays and global attractivity conditions for nonlinear equations are obtained. The nonlinear results are applied tothe Mackey-Glass model of respiratory dyna…
We provide explicit conditions for uniform stability, global asymptotic stability and uniform exponential stability for dynamic equations with a single delay and a nonnegative coefficient. Some examples on nonstandard time scales are also given to show applicability and sharpness of the new results.
Linear scalar differential equations with distributed delays appear in the study of the local stability of nonlinear differential equations with feedback, which are common in biology and physics. Negative feedback loops tend to promote oscillations around steady states, and their stability depends on the particular shape of the delay distribution. Since in applications the mean delay is often the only reliable information available about the distribution, it is desirable to find conditions for stability that are independent from the shape of the distribution. We show here that for a given mean…
In this paper a stability analysis for a Cournot duopoly model with tax evasion and time-delay in a continuous-time framework is presented. The mathematical model under consideration follows a gradient dynamics approach, is nonlinear and four-dimensional with state variables given by the production and declared revenue of each competitor. We prove that both the marginal cost rate and time delay play roles as bifurcation parameters. More precisely, if the marginal cost rate lies in certain closed interval then the equilibrium point is delay-independent stable, otherwise it is delay-dependent st…
This contribution presents two exponential stability criteria for linear systems with multiple pointwise and distributed delays. These results (necessary and sufficient conditions) are given in terms of the delay Lyapunov matrix and the fundamental matrix of the system. An important property is that the stability test requires a finite number of mathematical operations.
We present a review of known stability tests and new explicit exponential stability conditions for the linear scalar neutral equation with two delays $$ \dot{x}(t)-a(t)\dot{x}(g(t))+b(t)x(h(t))=0, $$ where $$ |a(t)|<1,~ b(t)\geq 0, ~h(t)\leq t, ~g(t)\leq t, $$ and for its generalizations, including equations with more than two delays, integro-differential equations and equations with a distributed delay.
This paper analyzes the eigenvalue distribution of neutral differential systems and the corresponding difference systems, and establishes the relationship between the eigenvalue distribution and delay-independent stability of neutral differential systems. By using the ``Complete Discrimination System for Polynomials", easily testable necessary and sufficient algebraic criteria for delay-independent stability of a class of neutral differential systems are established. The algebraic criteria generalize and unify the relevant results in the literature. Moreover, the maximal delay bound guaranteei…
We introduce a delay nonlinear differential equation model which describes how fish are harvested. In our previous studies we investigated the persistence of that equation and existence of a periodic solution for this equation. Here we study the stability (local and global) of the periodic solutions of that equation.
The problem considered in this paper consists of a cascade of reactions with discrete as well as distributed delays, which arose in the context of Hes1 gene expression. For the abstract general model sufficient conditions for global stability are presented. Then the abstract result is applied to the Hes1 model.
We study the two state model which describes the balance equation for carbon dioxide and oxygen. These are nonlinear parameter dependent and because of the transport delay in the respiratory control system, they are modeled with delay differential equation. So, the dynamics of a two state one delay model are investigated. By choosing the delay as a parameter, the stability and Hopf bifurcation conditions are obtained. We notice that as the delay passes through its critical value, the positive equilibrium loses its stability and Hopf bifurcation occurs. The stable region of the system with dela…
A proper discretization of the logistic differential equation, which is preserving these two distinct equilibrium solutions and their unstability and stability, suggest that we need to examine the time delay of the logistic map. According to Murray, the effect of delay in models is "usually" to increase the potential for instability. However the word "usually" is really ambiguous. In this paper, we mathematically formulate and prove the two conjectures about stability and instability.
We introduce the delayed Mittag-Leffler type matrix functions, delayed fractional cosine, delayed fractional sine and use the Laplace transform to obtain an analytical solution to the IVP for a Hilfer type fractional linear time-delay system $D_{0,t}^{μ,ν}z\left( t\right) +Az\left( t\right) +Ωz\left( t-h\right) =f\left( t\right) $ of order $1<μ<2$ and type $0\leqν\leq1,$ with nonpermutable matrices $A$ and $Ω$. Moreover, we study Ulam-Hyers stability of the Hilfer type fractional linear time-delay system. Obtained results extend those for Caputo and Riemann-Liouville type fractional linear tim…
This note is concerned with stability analysis of integral delay systems with multiple delays. To study this problem, the well-known Jensen inequality is generalized to the case of multiple terms by introducing an individual slack weighting matrix for each term, which can be optimized to reduce the conservatism. With the help of the multiple Jensen inequalities and by developing a novel linearizing technique, two novel Lyapunov functional based approaches are established to obtain sufficient stability conditions expressed by linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). It is shown that these new conditi…

An equilibrium of a delay differential equation (DDE) is absolutely stable, if it is locally asymptotically stable for all delays. We present criteria for absolute stability of DDEs with discrete time-delays. In the case of a single delay, the absolute stability is shown to be equivalent to asymptotic stability for sufficiently large delays. Similarly, for multiple delays, the absolute stability is equivalent to asymptotic stability for hierarchically large delays. Additionally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a linear DDE to be hyperbolic for all delays. The latter conditions …
The problem of p-th moment stability for time-varying stochastic time-delay systems with Markovian switching is investigated in this paper. Some novel stability criteria are obtained by applying the generalized Razumikhin and Krasovskii stability theorems. Both p-th moment asymptotic stability and (integral) input-to-state stability are considered based on the notion and properties of uniformly stable functions and the improved comparison principles. The established results show that time-derivatives of the constructed Razumikhin functions and Krasovskii functionals are allowed to be indefinit…
In this paper, the problem of stability in terms of two measures is considered for a class of stochastic partial differential delay equations with switching. Sufficient conditions for stability in terms of two measures are obtained based on the technique of constructing a proper approximating strong solution system and carrying out a limiting type of argument to pass on stability of strong solutions to mild ones obtained by Bao, Truman and Yuan [ J. Bao, A. Truman,C. Yuan, Stability in distribution of mild solutions to stochastic partial differential delay equations with jumps, Proc. R. Soc. A…
In this paper, we investigate a class of nonlinear impulsive stochastic differential evolution equations with infinite delay in Banach space. Based on the Krasnoselskii's fixed point theorem, sufficient conditions of the existence of the square mean piecewise almost periodic solutions to this type of equations are derived. Moreover, the exponential stability of the square mean piecewise almost periodic solution is investigated.
A virus dynamics model with intracellular state-dependent delay and nonlinear infection rate of Beddington-DeAngelis functional response is studied. The technique of Lyapunov functionals is used to analyze stability of an interior infection equilibrium which describes the case of both CTL and antibody immune responses activated. We consider first a particular biologically motivated class of discrete state-dependent delays. Next, the general case is investigated.
Delay differential equations are used as a model when the effect of past states has to be taken into account. In this work we consider delay models of chemical reaction networks with mass action kinetics. We obtain a sufficient condition for absolute delay stability of equilibrium concentrations, i.e., local asymptotic stability independent of the delay parameters. Several interesting examples on sequestration networks with delays are presented.
We obtain new explicit exponential stability conditions for the linear scalar neutral equation with two bounded delays $ (x(t)-a(t)x(g(t)))'+b(t)x(h(t))=0, $ where $|a(t)| \leq A_0 < 1$, $0<b_0\leq b(t)\leq B_0$, assuming that all parameters of the equation are measurable functions. To analyze exponential stability, we apply the Bohl-Perron theorem and a reduction of a neutral equation to an equation with an infinite number of non-neutral delay terms. This method has never been used before for this neutral equation; its application allowed to omit a usual restriction $|a(t)|<\frac{1}{2}$ in kn…
This paper deals with traveling wavefronts for temporally delayed, spatially discrete reaction-diffusion equations. Using a combination of the weighted energy method and the Green function technique, we prove that all noncritical wavefronts are globally exponentially stable, and critical wavefronts are globally algebraically stable when the initial perturbations around the wavefront decay to zero exponentially near minus infinity regardless of the magnitude of time delay.
We obtain a result on the behavior of the solutions of a general nonautonomous Hopfield neural network model with delay, assuming some general bound for the product of consecutive terms in the sequence of neuron charging times and some conditions to control the nonlinear part of the equations. We then apply this result to improve some existent results on the stability of Hopfield models. Our results are based on a new abstract result on the behavior of nonautonomous delayed equations.
In this paper we introduce the notion of a patient first-mean stable system. Such systems are switched systems that are first-mean stable meaning that they converge to a globally attracting fixed point on average. They are also patient so that they do not lose their first-mean stability when time-delays are introduced into the system. As time-delays are, in general, a source of instability and poor performance patient first-mean stability is a much stronger condition than first-mean stability. This notion of patient stability allows one to design systems that cannot be destabilized via time-de…
This paper investigates the robustness of exponential stability of a class of switched systems described by linear functional differential equations under arbitrary switching. We will measure the stability robustness of such a system, subject to parameter affine perturbations of its constituent subsystems matrices, by introducing the notion of structured stability radius. The lower bounds and the upper bounds for this radius are established under the assumption that certain associated positive linear systems upper bounding the given subsystems have a common linear copositive Lyapunov function.…
The solvability and stability analysis of linear time invariant systems of delay differential-algebraic equations (DDAEs) is analyzed. The behavior approach is applied to DDAEs in order to establish characterizations of their solvability in terms of spectral conditions. Furthermore, examples are delivered to demonstrate that the eigenvalue-based approach to analyze the exponential stability of dynamical system is only valid for a special class of DDAEs, namely non-advanced. Then, a new concept of weak stability is proposed and studied for DDAEs whose matrix coefficients pairwise commute.
We study an interplay between delay and discontinuous hysteresis in dynamical systems. After having established existence and uniqueness of solutions, we focus on the analysis of stability of periodic solutions. The main object we study is a Poincaré map that is infinite-dimensional due to delay and non-differentiable due to hysteresis. We propose a general functional framework based on the fractional order Sobolev--Slobodeckij spaces and explicitly obtain a formal linearization of the Poincaré map in these spaces. Furthermore, we prove that the spectrum of this formal linearization determines…
We study the stability of general $n$-dimensional nonautonomous linear differential equations with infinite delays. Delay independent criteria, as well as criteria depending on the size of some finite delays are established. In the first situation, the effect of the delays is dominated by non-delayed diagonal negative feedback terms, and sufficient conditions for both the asymptotic and the exponential asymptotic stability of the system are given. In the second case, the stability depends on the size of some bounded diagonal delays and coefficients, although terms with unbounded delay may co-e…
In the present article, we discuss some aspects of the local stability analysis for a class of abstract functional differential equations. This is done under smoothness assumptions which are often satisfied in the presence of a state-dependent delay. Apart from recapitulating the two classical principles of linearized stability and instability, we deduce the analogon of the Pliss reduction principle for the class of differential equations under consideration. This reduction principle enables to determine the local stability properties of a solution in the situation where the linearization does…
Fractional derivative and delay are important tools in modeling memory properties in the natural system. This work deals with the stability analysis of a fractional order delay differential equation \begin{equation*} D^αx(t)=δx(t-τ)-εx(t-τ)^3-px(t)^2+q x(t). \end{equation*} We provide linearization of this system in a neighbourhood of equilibrium points and propose linearized stability conditions. To discuss the stability of equilibrium points, we propose various conditions on the parameters $δ$, $ε$, $p$, $q$ and $τ$. Even though there are five parameters involved in the system, we are able t…
Absolute exponential stability problem of delay time-varying systems (DTVS) with sector-bounded nonlinearity is presented in this paper. By using the comparison principle and properties of positive systems we derive several novel criteria of absolute exponential stability, for both continuous-time and discrete-time nonlinear DTVS. When applied to the time-invariant case, the obtained stability criteria are shown to cover and extend some previously known results, including, in particular, the result due to S.K. Persidskii in Ukrainian Mathematical Journal, vol. 57(2005). The theoretical results…
New explicit conditions of asymptotic and exponential stability are obtained for the scalar nonautonomous linear delay differential equation $$ \dot{x}(t)+\sum_{k=1}^m a_k(t)x(h_k(t))=0 $$ with measurable delays and coefficients. These results are compared to known stability tests.
In this paper we study a model of HCV with mitotic proliferation, a saturation infection rate and a discrete intracellular delay: the delay corresponds to the time between infection of a infected target hepatocytes and production of new HCV particles. We establish the global stability of the infection-free equilibrium and existence, uniqueness, local and global stabilities of the infected equilibrium, also we establish the occurrence of a Hopf bifurcation. We will determine conditions for the permanence of model, and the length of delay to preserve stability. The unique infected equilibrium is…
For the nonlinear second order Lienard-type equations with time-varying delays $$ \ddot{x}(t)+\sum_{k=1}^m f_k(t,x(t),\dot{x}(g_k(t)))+\sum_{k=1}^l s_k(t,x(h_k(t)))=0, $$ global asymptotic stability conditions are obtained. The results are based on the new sufficient stability conditions for relevant linear equations and are applied to derive explicit stability conditions for the nonlinear Kaldor-Kalecki business cycle model. We also explore multistability of the sunflower non-autonomous equation and its modifications.
