Over the last few decades, electricity markets around the world have adopted multi-settlement structures, allowing for balancing of supply and demand as more accurate forecast information becomes available. Given increasing uncertainty due to adoption of renewables, more recent market design work has focused on optimization of expectation of some quantity, e.g. social welfare. However, social planners and policy makers are often risk averse, so that such risk neutral formulations do not adequately reflect prevailing attitudes towards risk, nor explain the decisions that follow. Hence we incorporate the commonly used risk measure conditional value at risk (CVaR) into the central planning objective, and study how a two-stage market operates when the individual generators are risk neutral. Our primary result is to show existence (by construction) of a sequential competitive equilibrium (SCEq) in this risk-aware two-stage market. Given equilibrium prices, we design a market mechanism which achieves social cost minimization assuming that agents are non strategic.
This paper summarizes the operational challenges imposed by integration of renewable electricity generation units in transmission level where the most common renewable generation units are solar and wind farms at the scale of 100s to 1000s MW. Such units, because of their stochastic nature, introduce new complexity and uncertainty to the grid. Throughout this paper, some results from the recent planning study of integration of 1,000 MW offshore wind farm into the U.S. Eastern Interconnection transmission system are shown.
A multiple market trading mechanism for the VPP to participate in electricity, renewable energy certificate (REC) and carbon emission right (CER) markets is proposed. With the introduction of the inventory mechanism of REC and CER, the profit of the VPP increases and better trading decisions with multiple markets are made under the requirements of renewable portfolio standard (RPS) and carbon emission (CE) quota requirements. According to the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions of the proposed model, properties of the multiple market trading mechanism are discussed. Results from case studies v…
Energy storage technologies are key to improving grid flexibility in the presence of increasing amounts of intermittent renewable generation. We propose an insurance contract that suitably compensates energy storage systems for providing flexibility. Such a contract provides a wider range of market opportunities for these systems while also incentivizing higher renewable penetration in the grid. We consider a day-ahead market in which generators, including renewables and storage owners, bid to be scheduled for the next operating day. Due to production uncertainty, renewable generators may be u…
In the 21st century, our world is facing difficult conditions for serious environmental pollution and the problem of energy shortage. An innovative idea has emerged to recycle wind energy from air conditioning condenser fans in outdoor buildings. Therefore, the main goal of this research is to develop renewable wind energy from the condenser fan of an air conditioner using Arduino as a microcontroller. This research moves towards a portable, low cost, environmentally friendly mini device that harnesses renewable energies with endless resources for future alternative power generation and reduce…

As the share of renewable energy sources in the present electric energy mix rises, their intermittence proves to be the biggest challenge to carbon free electricity generation. To address this challenge, we propose an electricity pricing agent, which sends price signals to the customers and contributes to shifting the customer demand to periods of high renewable energy generation. We propose an implementation of a pricing agent with a reinforcement learning approach where the environment is represented by the customers, the electricity generation utilities and the weather conditions.

Renewable power to ammonia (RePtA) is a prominent zero-carbon pathway for decarbonization. Due to the imbalance between renewables and production energy demand, the RePtA system relies on the electricity exchange with the power grid. Participating in the electricity market as a virtual power plant (VPP) may help to reduce energy costs. However, the power profile of local photovoltaics and wind turbines is similar to those in the market, resulting in rising energy costs under the conventional strategy. Hence, we develop a multi-timescale trading strategy for the RePtA VPP in the electricity, hy…
Japan has committed to carbon neutrality by 2050. Emissions from the electricity sector amount to 42% of the total. Solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind comprise three quarters of global net capacity additions because of low and falling prices. This provides an opportunity for Japan to make large reductions in emissions while also reducing its dependence on energy imports. This study shows that Japan has 14 times more solar and offshore wind resources than needed to supply 100% renewable electricity. A 40 year hourly energy balance model is presented of Japan's electricity system using historical…
A Comparative Analysis of Nigeria's Power Sector with and without Grid-Scale Storage: Future Implications for Emission and Renewable Energy Integration
Local electricity markets represent a way of supplementing traditional retailing contracts for end consumers -- among these markets, the renewable energy community has gained momentum over the last few years. This paper proposes a practical and readily to be adopted modelling solution for these communities, one that allows their members to share the economic benefits derived from them. The proposed solution relies on an \emph{ex-post} allocation of the electricity that is generated within energy communities (i.e., local electricity) based on the optimisation of \emph{repartition keys}. Reparti…
We propose a new forward electricity market framework that admits heterogeneous market participants with second-order cone strategy sets, who accurately express the nonlinearities in their costs and constraints through conic bids, and a network operator facing conic operational constraints. In contrast to the prevalent linear-programming-based electricity markets, we highlight how the inclusion of second-order cone constraints improves uncertainty-, asset- and network-awareness of the market, which is key to the successful transition towards an electricity system based on weather-dependent ren…
Recently, chance-constrained stochastic electricity market designs have been proposed to address the shortcomings of scenario-based stochastic market designs. In particular, the use of chance-constrained market-clearing avoids trading off in-expectation and per-scenario characteristics and yields unique energy and reserves prices. However, current formulations rely on symmetric control policies based on the aggregated system imbalance, which restricts balancing reserve providers in their energy and reserve commitments. This paper extends existing chance-constrained market-clearing formulations…
Existing electricity market designs assume risk neutrality and lack risk-hedging instruments, which leads to suboptimal market outcomes and reduces the overall market efficiency. This paper enables risk-trading in the chance-constrained stochastic electricity market by introducing Arrow-Debreu Securities (ADS) and derives a risk-averse market-clearing model with risk trading. To enable risk trading, the probability space of underlying uncertainty is discretized in a finite number of outcomes, which makes it possible to design practical risk contracts and to produce energy, balancing reserve an…
Renewable energy generation is offered through electricity markets, quite some time in advance. This then leads to a problem of decision-making under uncertainty, which may be seen as a newsvendor problem. Contrarily to the conventional case for which underage and overage penalties are known, such penalties in the case of electricity markets are unknown, and difficult to estimate. In addition, one is actually only penalized for either overage or underage, not both. Consequently, we look at a slightly different form of a newsvendor problem, for a price-taker participant offering in electricity …
The price of solar panels is decreasing rapidly and governments around the world are investing in solar power plants to increase the portion of solar energy in the smart grid. The price of electricity produced by solar power plants is much cheaper than conventional thermal power plants and innovation in solar cells is further increasing the divide. Consequently, setting up solar power plants will decrease electricity spot prices on average. However, the topology of the power grid must be considered while setting up solar power plants so that full benefits of cheap solar power can be gained by …
We consider a two-stage market mechanism for trading electricity including renewable generation as an alternative to the widely used multi-settlement market structure. The two-stage market structure allows for recourse decisions by the market operator, which are not possible in today's markets. We allow for different conventional generation cost curves in the forward and the real-time stages. We have considered costs of demand response programs and black outs, and adopt a DC power flow model to account for network constraints. Our first result is to show existence (by construction) of a sequen…
Land-use conflicts may constrain the unprecedented rates of renewable energy deployment required to meet the decarbonization goals of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). This paper employs geospatially resolved data and a detailed electricity system capacity expansion model to generate 160 affordable, zero-carbon electricity supply portfolios for the American west and evaluates the land use impacts of each portfolio. Less than 4% of all sites suitable for solar development and 17% of all wind sites appear in this set of portfolios. Of these sites, 53% of solar and 85% of wind sites exhibit high…
Distributed generation, based on the exploitation of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), has increased in the last few decades to limit anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions, and this trend will increase in the future. However, RES generation is not dispatchable, and an increasing share of RES may lead to inefficiencies and even problems for the electricity network. Flexible resources are needed to handle RES generation in order to support the delicate electricity generation and demand balance. Energy conversion technologies (P2X, Power to X) allow the flexibility of energy systems to be increase…
The imminent advent of large-scale green hydrogen (H2) production raises the central question of which of the two options, transporting "green" molecules, or transporting "green" electrons, is the most cost-effective one. This paper proposes a first-of-its-kind mathematical framework for the optimal integrated planning of electricity and H2 infrastructure for transporting large-scale variable renewable energy (VRE). In contrast to most existing works, this work incorporates essential nonlinearities such as voltage drops due to losses in high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) and high-voltage …
Electricity network modelling and grid simulations form a key enabling element for the integration of newer and cleaner technologies such as renewable energy generation and electric vehicles into the existing grid and energy system infrastructure. This paper reviews the models of the African electricity systems and highlights the gaps in the open model landscape. Using PyPSA (an open Power System Analysis package), the paper outlines the pathway to a fully open model and data to increase the transparency in the African electricity system planning. Optimisation and modelling can reveal viable p…
Solving the optimal power flow (OPF) problem in real-time electricity market improves the efficiency and reliability in the integration of low-carbon energy resources into the power grids. To address the scalability and adaptivity issues of existing end-to-end OPF learning solutions, we propose a new graph neural network (GNN) framework for predicting the electricity market prices from solving OPFs. The proposed GNN-for-OPF framework innovatively exploits the locality property of prices and introduces physics-aware regularization, while attaining reduced model complexity and fast adaptivity to…
The proposed open-source Power Market Tool (POMATO) aims to enable research on interconnected modern and future electricity markets in the context of the physical transmission system and its secure operation. POMATO has been designed to study capacity allocation and congestion management (CACM) policies of European zonal electricity markets, especially flow-based market coupling (FBMC). For this purpose, POMATO implements methods for the analysis of simultaneous zonal market clearing, nodal (N-k secure) power flow computation for capacity allocation, and multi-stage market clearing with adapti…
Appropriately designed renewable support policies can play a leading role in promoting renewable expansions and contribute to low emission goals. Meanwhile, ill-designed policies may distort electricity markets, put power utilities and generation companies on an unlevel playing field and, in turn, cause inefficiencies. This paper proposes a framework to optimize policymaking for renewable energy sources, while incorporating conflicting interests and objectives of different stakeholders. We formulate a tri-level optimization problem where each level represents a different entity: a state regula…
The implementation of electricity markets based on locational marginal pricing in a multi-settlement process has allowed wholesale competition, with pricing mechanisms that incentivize the optimal allocation of generation, transmission, and demand-response resources. While efficiency and reliability gains have been achieved in the US at a regional level, the lack of adequate inter-regional coordination mechanisms has limited broader gains. The shortcomings of cross-border coordination of electricity markets become more apparent as the industry transitions towards higher penetration of renewabl…

Distributed renewable energy systems are now widely installed in many buildings, transforming the buildings into electricity prosumers. Existing studies have developed some advanced building side controls that enable renewable energy sharing and that aim to optimise building-cluster-level performance via regulating the energy storage charging/ discharging. However, the flexible demand shifting ability of electric vehicles is not considered in these building side controls. For instance, the electric vehicle charging will usually start once they are plugged into charging stations. But, in such c…
The emerging paradigm of interconnected microgrids advocates energy trading or sharing among multiple microgrids. It helps make full use of the temporal availability of energy and diversity in operational costs when meeting various energy loads. However, energy trading might not completely absorb excess renewable energy. A multi-energy management framework including fuel cell vehicles, energy storage, combined heat and power system, and renewable energy is proposed, and the characteristics and scheduling arrangements of fuel cell vehicles are considered to further improve the local absorption …
Maintaining the stability of renewable-dominant power systems requires the procurement of virtual inertia services from non-synchronous resources (e.g., batteries, wind turbines) in addition to inertia traditionally provided by synchronous resources (e.g., thermal generators). However, the pricing of inertia provision has not been studied in a stochastic electricity market, where the uncertainty characteristics of renewable energy sources (RES) are considered. To fill in this research gap, this paper formulates a chance-constrained stochastic unit commitment model with inertia requirements and…
The decarbonization of the power sector plays a pivotal role in economy-wide decarbonization to set the world on track to limit warming to 1.5°C by 2050. Carbon emission markets can play a significant role in this transition by putting a price on carbon and giving electricity producers an incentive to reduce their emissions. In this paper, we study the operational equilibrium of an integrated regional/jurisdictional energy system that comprises an electricity market, a natural gas market, and a carbon emission market. We first propose the novel role of a regional carbon market operator (CMO). …
The increasing trend of transportation electrification presents investors the opportunity to provide charging services to Electric Vehicle (EV) owners via the energy purchased from the wholesale electricity market. This will benefit EV owners with the availability of competitive rates compared to the regulated utility time-of-use (TOU) rates. The fundamental questions addressed in this paper are 1) will EV owners benefit from the additional choice of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCSs) compared to home charging? 2) is there any profitable market opportunity for charging stations while t…
The intraday (ID) electricity market has received an increasing attention in the recent EU electricity-market discussions. This is partly because the uncertainty in the underlying power system is growing and the ID market provides an adjustment platform to deal with such uncertainties. Hence, market participants need a proper ID market price model to optimally adjust their positions by trading in the market. Inadequate historical data for ID market price makes it more challenging to model. This paper proposes long short-term memory, deep convolutional generative adversarial networks, and No-U-…
Coordinating the operation of units at the interface between heat and electricity systems, such as combined heat and power plants and heat pumps, is essential to reduce inefficiencies in each system and help achieve a cost-effective and efficient operation of the overall energy system. These energy systems are currently operated by sequential markets, which interface the technical and economic aspects of the systems. In that context, this study introduces an electricity-aware heat unit commitment model, which seeks to optimize the operation of the heat system while accounting for the techno-ec…
