We use the Hénon-Heiles system as a paradigmatic model for chaotic scattering to study the Lorentz factor effects on its transient chaotic dynamics. In particular, we focus on how time dilation occurs within the scattering region by measuring the time in a clock attached to the particle. We observe that the several events of time dilation that the particle undergoes exhibit sensitivity to initial conditions. However, the structure of the singularities appearing in the escape time function remains invariant under coordinate transformations. This occurs because the singularities are closely related to the chaotic saddle. We then demonstrate using a Cantor-like set approach that the fractal dimension of the escape time function is relativistic invariant. In order to verify this result, we compute by means of the uncertainty dimension algorithm the fractal dimensions of the escape time functions as measured with inertial and comoving with the particle frames. We conclude that, from a mathematical point of view, chaotic transient phenomena are equally predictable in any reference frame and that transient chaos is coordinate invariant.
In [1], it is shown that the Rabinovich-Fabrikant (RF) system admits self-excited and hidden chaotic attractors. In this paper, we further show that the RF system also admits a pair of symmetric transient hidden chaotic attractors. We reveal more extremely rich dynamics of this system, such as a new kind of "virtual saddles".
A phenomenon of weak transient chaos is discussed that is caused by sub-exponential divergence of trajectories in the basin of a non-chaotic attractor. Such a regime is not easy to detect, because conventional characteristics, such as the largest Lyapunov exponent is non-positive. Here we study, how such a divergence can be exposed and detected. First, we show that weak transient chaos can be exposed if a small random perturbation is added to the system, leading to positive values of the largest Lyapunov exponent. Second, we introduce an alternative definition of the Lyapunov exponent, which a…
In this work, we report the enhanced stability of induced synchronization observed through transient uncoupling in a class of unidirectionally coupled identical chaotic systems. The phenomenon of transient uncoupling implies the clipping of the chaotic attractor of the driven system in a drive-driven scenario and making the coupling strength active over the clipped regions. The {\emph{Master Stability Function}} (MSF) is used to determine the stability of the synchronized states for a finite clipping fraction in unidirectionally coupled chaotic systems subjected to transient uncoupling for fix…
The transient chaos regime in a two-dimensional system with discrete time (Eno map) is considered. It is demonstrated that a time series corresponding to this regime differs from a chaotic series constructed for close values of the control parameters by the presence of "nonregular" regions, the number of which increases with the critical parameter. A possible mechanism of this effect is discussed.
Chaotic behavior can be produced from difference equations with unstable fixed points. Difference equations can be used for algorithms to control the chaotic behavior by perturbing a system parameter using feedback based on the first difference of the system value. This results in a system of nonlinear first order difference equations whose stable fixed point is the controlled chaotic behavior. Basing the feedback on the first difference produces distinctly different transient responses than when basing feedback on the error from the fixed point. Analog electronic circuits provide the experime…
External and internal factors may cause a system's parameter to vary with time before it stabilizes. This drift induces a regime shift when the parameter crosses a bifurcation. Here, we study the case of an infinite dimensional system: a time-delayed oscillator whose time delay varies at a small but non-negligible rate. Our research shows that due to this parameter drift, trajectories from a chaotic attractor tip to other states with a certain probability. This causes the appearance of the phenomenon of transient chaos. By using an ensemble approach, we find a gamma distribution of transient l…
In this paper, we report the enhanced stability of induced synchronization by transient uncoupling observed in certain unidirectionally coupled second-order chaotic systems. The stability of synchronization observed in the coupled systems subjected to transient uncoupling is analyzed using the {\emph{Master Stability Function}}. The existence of the coupled systems in stable synchronized states over a certain range of the clipping fraction of the driven system is identified. The enhanced stable synchronized states are obtained for fixed values of clipping fraction in certain second-order chaot…
In this article, on the example of the known low-order dynamical models, namely Lorenz, Rossler and Vallis systems, the difficulties of reliable numerical analysis of chaotic dynamical systems are discussed. For the Lorenz system, the problems of existence of hidden chaotic attractors and hidden transient chaotic sets and their numerical investigation are considered. The problems of the numerical characterization of a chaotic attractor by calculating finite-time time Lyapunov exponents and finite-time Lyapunov dimension along one trajectory are demonstrated using the example of computing unsta…
A four-dimensional four-parameter Chua model with cubic nonlinearity is studied applying numerical continuation and numerical solutions methods. Regarding numerical solution methods, its dynamics is characterized on Lyapunov and isoperiodic diagrams and regarding numerical continuation method, the bifurcation curves are obtained. Combining both methods the bifurcation structures of the model were obtained with the possibility to describe the {\it shrimp}-shaped domains and their endoskeletons. We study the effect of a parameter that controls the dimension of the system leading the model to pre…
Transient chaos is a characteristic behavior in nonlinear dynamics where trajectories in a certain region of phase space behave chaotically for a while, before escaping to an external attractor. In some situations the escapes are highly undesirable, so that it would be necessary to avoid such a situation. In this paper we apply a control method known as partial control that allows one to prevent the escapes of the trajectories to the external attractors, keeping the trajectories in the chaotic region forever. To illustrate how the method works, we have chosen the Lorenz system for a choice of …
Traditional studies of chaos in conservative and driven dissipative systems have established a correspondence between sensitive dependence on initial conditions and fractal basin boundaries, but much less is known about the relation between geometry and dynamics in undriven dissipative systems. These systems can exhibit a prevalent form of complex dynamics, dubbed doubly transient chaos because not only typical trajectories but also the (otherwise invariant) chaotic saddles are transient. This property, along with a manifest lack of scale invariance, has hindered the study of the geometric pro…

Master-slave systems have been intensively investigated to model the application of chaos to communications. We considered Colpitts oscillators coupled according to a master-slave configuration to study chaos synchronisation. We revealed the existence of super persistent transients in this coupled system. Moreover, we showed that an additive noise added to the slave system may suppress chaos synchronisation. When synchronisation is not suppressed, the noise induces longer transients.
This report unravels frustration as a source of transient chaotic dynamics even in a simple array of coupled limit cycle oscillators. The transient chaotic dynamics along with the multistable nature of frustrated systems facilitates the existence of complex basin structures such as fractal and riddled basins. In particular, we report the emergence of transient chaotic dynamics around the chaotic itinerancy region, where the basin of attraction near the chaotic region is riddled and it becomes fractal basin when we move away from this region. Normally the complex basin structures are observed o…
We propose a neural network model with transient chaos, or a transiently chaotic neural network (TCNN) as an approximation method for combinatorial optimization problem, by introducing transiently chaotic dynamics into neural networks. Unlike conventional neural networks only with point attractors, the proposed neural network has richer and more flexible dynamics, so that it can be expected to have higher ability of searching for globally optimal or near-optimal solutions. A significant property of this model is that the chaotic neurodynamics is temporarily generated for searching and self-org…
We describe a method for determining the transient process duration in a standard two-dimensionaldynamic system with discrete time (Henon map), occurring in the regime of chaotic oscillations
We study cosmological dynamics of a flat Randall-Sundrum brane with a scalar field and a negative "dark radiation" term. It is shown that in some situations the "dark radiation" can mimic spatial curvature and cause a chaotic behavior which is similar to chaotic dynamics in closed Universe with a scalar field.
Fundamental problems of periodicity and transient process to periodicity of chaotic trajectories in computer realization with finite computation precision is investigated by taking single and coupled Logistic maps as examples. Empirical power law relations of the period and transient iterations with the computation precisions and the sizes of coupled systems are obtained. For each computation we always find, by randomly choosing initial conditions, a single dominant periodic trajectory which is realized with major portion of probability. These understandings are useful for possible application…
While the chimera states themselves are usually believed to be chaotic transients, the involvement of chaos behind their self-organization is not properly distinguished or studied. In this work, we demonstrate that small chimeras in the local flux dynamics of an array of magnetically coupled superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) driven by an external field are born through transiently chaotic dynamics. We deduce analytic expressions for small chimeras and synchronous states which correspond to nonchaotic attractors in the model. We also numerically study the bifurcations underl…
Excitable media can develop spiral chaos, in which the number of spirals changes chaotically with time. Depending on parameter values in dynamical equations, spiral chaos may permanently persist or spontaneously arrive at a steady state after a transient time, referred to as the lifetime. Previous numerical studies have demonstrated that the lifetime of transient spiral chaos increases exponentially with system size to a good approximation. In this study, using the fact that the number of spirals obeys a Gaussian distribution, we provide a general expression for the system size dependence of t…
The presence of a nonattractive chaotic set, also called chaotic saddle, in phase space implies the appearance of a finite time kind of chaos that is known as transient chaos. For a given dynamical system in a certain region of phase space with transient chaos, trajectories eventually abandon the chaotic region escaping to an external attractor, if no external intervention is done on the system. In some situations, this attractor may involve an undesirable behavior, so the application of a control in the system is necessary to avoid it. Both, the nonattractive nature of transient chaos and eve…
We present the results of an experimental study of the elastic enhancement factor W for a microwave rectangular cavity simulating a two-dimensional quantum billiard in a transient region between regular and chaotic dynamics. The cavity was coupled to a vector network analyzer via two microwave antennas. The departure of the system from the integrable one due to presence of antennas acting as scatterers is characterised by the parameter of chaoticity k = 2.8. The experimental results for the rectangular cavity are compared with the ones obtained for a microwave rough cavity simulating a chaotic…
One-dimensional maps exhibiting transient chaos and defined on two preimages of the unit interval [0,1] are investigated. It is shown that such maps have continuously many conditionally invariant measures $μ_σ$ scaling at the fixed point at x=0 as $x^σ$, but smooth elsewhere. Here $σ$ should be smaller than a critical value $σ_{c}$ that is related to the spectral properties of the Frobenius-Perron operator. The corresponding natural measures are proven to be entirely concentrated on the fixed point.
Partial control is a technique used in systems with transient chaos. The aim of this control method is to avoid the escape of the orbits from a region Q of the phase space where the transient chaotic dynamics takes place. This technique is based on finding a special subset of Q called the safe set. The chaotic orbit can be sustained in the safe set with a minimum amount of control. In this work we develop a control strategy to gradually lead any chaotic orbit in Q to the safe set by using the safety function. With the technique proposed here, the safe set can be converted into a global attract…
In pipes and channels, the onset of turbulence is initially dominated by localized transients, which lead to sustained turbulence through their collective dynamics. In the present work, we study the localized turbulence in pipe flow numerically and elucidate a state space structure that gives rise to transient chaos. Starting from the basin boundary separating laminar and turbulent flow, we identify transverse homoclinic orbits, the presence of which necessitates a homoclinic tangle and chaos. A direct consequence of the homoclinic tangle is the fractal nature of the laminar-turbulent boundary…
Chaos is an inherently dynamical phenomenon traditionally studied for trajectories that are either permanently erratic or transiently influenced by permanently erratic ones lying on a set of measure zero. The latter gives rise to the final state sensitivity observed in connection with fractal basin boundaries in conservative scattering systems and driven dissipative systems. Here we focus on the most prevalent case of undriven dissipative systems, whose transient dynamics fall outside the scope of previous studies since no time-dependent solutions can exist for asymptotically long times. We sh…
In this paper we investigate deterministic diffusion in systems which are spatially extended in certain directions but are restricted in size and open in other directions, consequently particles can escape. We introduce besides the diffusion coefficient D on the chaotic repeller a coefficient ${\hat D}$ which measures the broadening of the distribution of trajectories during the transient chaotic motion. Both coefficients are explicitly computed for one-dimensional models, and they are found to be different in most cases. We show furthermore that a jump develops in both of the coefficients for…
We consider the chaotic dynamics of the interaction between an ensemble of two-level atoms in a high-Q Fabry-Perot cavity with a single mode of self-consistent field and with an external amplitude-modulated field. It is shown that in the case of an exact atom-field resonance and at the initial population of the atomic ground state, the Hamiltonian chaos in the system is always transient. The differences in the chaotic dynamics for the Fabry-Perot and ring cavity geometries are considered. The conditions for the experimental observation of the transient Hamiltonian chaos are discussed.
Chaotic transients occur in many experiments including those in fluids, in simulations of the plane Couette flow, and in coupled map lattices and they are a common phenomena in dynamical systems. Superlong chaotic transients are caused by the presence of chaotic saddles whose stable sets have fractal dimensions that are close to phase-space dimension. For many physical systems chaotic saddles have a big impact on laboratory measurements, and it is important to compute the dimension of such stable sets including fractal basin boundaries through a direct method. In this work, we present a new me…
We obtain a description of the Poincaré recurrences of chaotic systems in terms of the ergodic theory of transient chaos. It is based on the equivalence between the recurrence time distribution and an escape time distribution obtained by leaking the system and taking a special initial ensemble. This ensemble is atypical in terms of the natural measure of the leaked system, the conditionally invariant measure. Accordingly, for general initial ensembles, the average recurrence and escape times are different. However, we show that the decay rate of these distributions is always the same. Our resu…
A new control algorithm based on the partial control method has been developed. The general situation we are considering is an orbit starting in a certain phase space region Q having a chaotic transient behavior affected by noise, so that the orbit will definitely escape from Q in an unpredictable number of iterations. Thus, the goal of the algorithm is to control in a predictable manner when to escape. While partial control has been used as a way to avoid escapes, here we want to adapt it to force the escape in a controlled manner. We have introduced new tools such as escape functions and esc…
To characterize local finite-time properties associated with transient chaos in open dynamical systems, we introduce an escape rate and fractal dimensions suitable for this purpose in a coarse-grained description. We numerically illustrate that these quantifiers have a considerable spread across the domain of the dynamics, but their spatial variation, especially on long but non-asymptotic integration times, is approximately consistent with the relationship that was recognized by Kantz and Grassberger for temporally asymptotic quantifiers. In particular, deviations from this relationship are sm…
In order to simulate observational and experimental situations, we consider a leak in the phase space of a chaotic dynamical system. We obtain an expression for the escape rate of the survival probability applying the theory of transient chaos. This expression improves previous estimates based on the properties of the closed system and explains dependencies on the position and size of the leak and on the initial ensemble. With a subtle choice of the initial ensemble, we obtain an equivalence to the classical problem of Poincare recurrences in closed systems, which is treated in the same framew…
In this letter, we report a numerical study on the collective dynamics of two mutually coupled Thomas oscillators with linear/nonlinear coupling in a dynamic environment. We claim our model calculations can explain the diffusion of interacting particles in a fluid. In an ordinary fluid, frequent momentum transfer between particles keeps the particles in a fluid moving together with correlated time behaviour. The diffusion of interacting particles in a dynamic environment like this is a nonequilibrium phenomenon and is similar to the observed transient chaotic dynamics in the model. The detaile…
We present here a new approach of the partial control method, which is a useful control technique applied to transient chaotic dynamics affected by a bounded noise. Usually we want to avoid the escape of these chaotic transients outside a certain region $Q$ of the phase space. For that purpose, there exists a control bound such that for controls smaller than this bound trajectories are kept in a special subset of $Q$ called the safe set. The aim of this new approach is to go further, and to compute for every point of $Q$ the minimal control bound that would keep it in $Q$. This defines a speci…
Systems whose time evolutions are entirely deterministic can nevertheless be studied probabilistically, i.e. in terms of the evolution of probability distributions rather than individual trajectories. This approach is central to the dynamics of ensembles (statistical mechanics) and systems with uncertainty in the initial conditions. Delay differential equations (DDEs) are a particular class of deterministic systems, distinguished by an explicit dependence of the dynamics on past states. A probabilistic approach to DDEs is lacking. The main problems we consider in developing such an approach ar…
In this work we deal with the Hénon and the Lozi map for a choice of parameters where they show transient chaos. Orbits close to the chaotic saddle behave chaotically for a while to eventually escape to an external attractor. Traditionally, to prevent such an escape, the partial control technique has been applied. This method stands out for considering disturbances (noise) affecting the map and for finding a special region of the phase space, called the safe set, where the control required to sustain the orbits is small. However, in this work we will apply a new approach of the partial control…
Motivated by the realization of magnetic monopole of Berry curvature by the energy crossing point, we theoretically study the effect of magnetic monopole under a uniform electric field in the semiclassical dynamics, which is relevant to many physical situations such as relaxation through the diabolic point. We found that the competition between the backward scattering by the monopole magnetic field and the acceleration by the electric field leads to the bound state, i.e., capture of a particle near the monopole. Furthermore, the nonlinearity induced by the magnetic monopole leads to the chaoti…
We propose to control the orbits of the two-dimensional Rulkov model affected by bounded noise. For the correct parameter choice the phase space presents two chaotic regions separated by a transient chaotic region in between. One of the chaotic regions is the responsible to give birth to the neuronal bursting regime. Normally, an orbit in this chaotic region cannot pass through the transient chaotic one and reach the other chaotic region. As a consequence the burstings are short in time. Here, we propose a control technique to connect both chaotic regions and allow the neuron to exhibit very l…
A theory concerning the emergence and control of chaotic escape from a potential well by means of autoresonant excitations is presented in the context of generic, dissipative, and multistable systems. Universal scaling laws relating both the onset and lifetime of transient chaos with the parameters of autoresonant excitations are derived theoretically using vibrational mechanics, Melnikov analysis, and energy-based autoresonance theory. Numerical experiments show that these scaling laws are robust against both the presence of noise and re-shaping.
We study the dynamics of a two-degrees-of-freedom (two DOF) nonlinear oscillator representing a quartercar model excited by a road roughness profile. Modelling the road profile by means of a harmonic function we derive the Melnikov criterion for a system transition to chaos or escape. The analytically obtained estimations are confirmed by numerical simulations. To analyze the transient vibrations we used recurrences.
We conduct a theoretical study of the nonlinear optical response of a two-dimensional semi-conductor quantum dot supercrystal subjected to a quasi-resonant continuous wave excitation. Aconstituent quantum dot is odeled as a three-level ladder-like system (comprising the ground, theone-exciton, and the bi-exction states). To study the stationary response of the supercrystal, wepropose an exact linear parametric method of solving the nonlinear steady-state problem, whileto address the supercrystal optical dynamics qualitatively, we put forward a novel method to cal-culate the bifurcation diagram…
Understanding irreversibility in macrophysics from reversible microphysics has been the holy grail in statistical physics ever since the mid-19th century. Here the central question concerns the arrow of time, which boils down to deriving macroscopic emergent irreversibility from microscopic reversible equations of motion. As suggested by Boltzmann, this irreversibility amounts to improbability (rather than impossibility) of the second-law-violating events. Later studies suggest that this improbability arises from a fractal attractor which is dynamically generated in phase space in reversible d…
We study the dynamical states that emerge in a small-world network of recurrently coupled excitable neurons through both numerical and analytical methods. These dynamics depend in large part on the fraction of long-range connections or `short-cuts' and the delay in the neuronal interactions. Persistent activity arises for a small fraction of `short-cuts', while a transition to failure occurs at a critical value of the `short-cut' density. The persistent activity consists of multi-stable periodic attractors, the number of which is at least on the order of the number of neurons in the network. F…
We investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of classical particles in a driven quasiperiodic lattice based on the Fibonacci sequence. An intricate transient dynamics of extraordinarily long ballistic flights at distinct velocities is found. We argue how these transients are caused and can be under- stood by a hierarchy of block decompositions of the quasiperiodic lattice. A comparison to the cases of periodic and fully randomized lattices is performed.
