We present the results of an experimental study of the elastic enhancement factor W for a microwave rectangular cavity simulating a two-dimensional quantum billiard in a transient region between regular and chaotic dynamics. The cavity was coupled to a vector network analyzer via two microwave antennas. The departure of the system from the integrable one due to presence of antennas acting as scatterers is characterised by the parameter of chaoticity k = 2.8. The experimental results for the rectangular cavity are compared with the ones obtained for a microwave rough cavity simulating a chaotic quantum billiard. The experimental results were obtained for the frequency range v = 16 - 18.5 GHz and moderate absorption strength y = 5.2 - 7.4. We show that the elastic enhancement factor for the rectangular cavity lies below the theoretical value W = 3 predicted for integrable systems and it is significantly higher than the one obtained for the rough cavity. The results obtained for the microwave rough cavity are smaller than the ones obtained within the framework of Random Matrix Theory and lie between them and the ones predicted within a recently introduced model of the two-channel coupling (V. Sokolov and O. Zhirov, arXiv:1411.6211v2[nucl-th], 12 Dec 2014).
In [1], it is shown that the Rabinovich-Fabrikant (RF) system admits self-excited and hidden chaotic attractors. In this paper, we further show that the RF system also admits a pair of symmetric transient hidden chaotic attractors. We reveal more extremely rich dynamics of this system, such as a new kind of "virtual saddles".
In this work, we report the enhanced stability of induced synchronization observed through transient uncoupling in a class of unidirectionally coupled identical chaotic systems. The phenomenon of transient uncoupling implies the clipping of the chaotic attractor of the driven system in a drive-driven scenario and making the coupling strength active over the clipped regions. The {\emph{Master Stability Function}} (MSF) is used to determine the stability of the synchronized states for a finite clipping fraction in unidirectionally coupled chaotic systems subjected to transient uncoupling for fix…
In this paper, we report the enhanced stability of induced synchronization by transient uncoupling observed in certain unidirectionally coupled second-order chaotic systems. The stability of synchronization observed in the coupled systems subjected to transient uncoupling is analyzed using the {\emph{Master Stability Function}}. The existence of the coupled systems in stable synchronized states over a certain range of the clipping fraction of the driven system is identified. The enhanced stable synchronized states are obtained for fixed values of clipping fraction in certain second-order chaot…
In this article, on the example of the known low-order dynamical models, namely Lorenz, Rossler and Vallis systems, the difficulties of reliable numerical analysis of chaotic dynamical systems are discussed. For the Lorenz system, the problems of existence of hidden chaotic attractors and hidden transient chaotic sets and their numerical investigation are considered. The problems of the numerical characterization of a chaotic attractor by calculating finite-time time Lyapunov exponents and finite-time Lyapunov dimension along one trajectory are demonstrated using the example of computing unsta…
We describe a method for determining the transient process duration in a standard two-dimensionaldynamic system with discrete time (Henon map), occurring in the regime of chaotic oscillations
Chaotic behavior can be produced from difference equations with unstable fixed points. Difference equations can be used for algorithms to control the chaotic behavior by perturbing a system parameter using feedback based on the first difference of the system value. This results in a system of nonlinear first order difference equations whose stable fixed point is the controlled chaotic behavior. Basing the feedback on the first difference produces distinctly different transient responses than when basing feedback on the error from the fixed point. Analog electronic circuits provide the experime…
We use the Hénon-Heiles system as a paradigmatic model for chaotic scattering to study the Lorentz factor effects on its transient chaotic dynamics. In particular, we focus on how time dilation occurs within the scattering region by measuring the time in a clock attached to the particle. We observe that the several events of time dilation that the particle undergoes exhibit sensitivity to initial conditions. However, the structure of the singularities appearing in the escape time function remains invariant under coordinate transformations. This occurs because the singularities are closely rela…
We propose a neural network model with transient chaos, or a transiently chaotic neural network (TCNN) as an approximation method for combinatorial optimization problem, by introducing transiently chaotic dynamics into neural networks. Unlike conventional neural networks only with point attractors, the proposed neural network has richer and more flexible dynamics, so that it can be expected to have higher ability of searching for globally optimal or near-optimal solutions. A significant property of this model is that the chaotic neurodynamics is temporarily generated for searching and self-org…
Fundamental problems of periodicity and transient process to periodicity of chaotic trajectories in computer realization with finite computation precision is investigated by taking single and coupled Logistic maps as examples. Empirical power law relations of the period and transient iterations with the computation precisions and the sizes of coupled systems are obtained. For each computation we always find, by randomly choosing initial conditions, a single dominant periodic trajectory which is realized with major portion of probability. These understandings are useful for possible application…
Partial control is a technique used in systems with transient chaos. The aim of this control method is to avoid the escape of the orbits from a region Q of the phase space where the transient chaotic dynamics takes place. This technique is based on finding a special subset of Q called the safe set. The chaotic orbit can be sustained in the safe set with a minimum amount of control. In this work we develop a control strategy to gradually lead any chaotic orbit in Q to the safe set by using the safety function. With the technique proposed here, the safe set can be converted into a global attract…
This report unravels frustration as a source of transient chaotic dynamics even in a simple array of coupled limit cycle oscillators. The transient chaotic dynamics along with the multistable nature of frustrated systems facilitates the existence of complex basin structures such as fractal and riddled basins. In particular, we report the emergence of transient chaotic dynamics around the chaotic itinerancy region, where the basin of attraction near the chaotic region is riddled and it becomes fractal basin when we move away from this region. Normally the complex basin structures are observed o…
Chaotic transients occur in many experiments including those in fluids, in simulations of the plane Couette flow, and in coupled map lattices and they are a common phenomena in dynamical systems. Superlong chaotic transients are caused by the presence of chaotic saddles whose stable sets have fractal dimensions that are close to phase-space dimension. For many physical systems chaotic saddles have a big impact on laboratory measurements, and it is important to compute the dimension of such stable sets including fractal basin boundaries through a direct method. In this work, we present a new me…
A new control algorithm based on the partial control method has been developed. The general situation we are considering is an orbit starting in a certain phase space region Q having a chaotic transient behavior affected by noise, so that the orbit will definitely escape from Q in an unpredictable number of iterations. Thus, the goal of the algorithm is to control in a predictable manner when to escape. While partial control has been used as a way to avoid escapes, here we want to adapt it to force the escape in a controlled manner. We have introduced new tools such as escape functions and esc…

We present here a new approach of the partial control method, which is a useful control technique applied to transient chaotic dynamics affected by a bounded noise. Usually we want to avoid the escape of these chaotic transients outside a certain region $Q$ of the phase space. For that purpose, there exists a control bound such that for controls smaller than this bound trajectories are kept in a special subset of $Q$ called the safe set. The aim of this new approach is to go further, and to compute for every point of $Q$ the minimal control bound that would keep it in $Q$. This defines a speci…
A discontinuous area-preserving mapping derived from a sinusoidally-forced impacting system is studied. This system, the elastic impact oscillator, is very closely related to the accelerator models of particle physics such as the Fermi map. The discontinuity in the mapping is due to grazing which can have a surprisingly large effect upon the phase space. In particular, at the boundary of the stochastic sea, the discontinuity set and its images can act as a partial barrier which allows trajectories to move between chaotic and regular regions. The system at higher energies is also analysed and M…
We study cosmological dynamics of a flat Randall-Sundrum brane with a scalar field and a negative "dark radiation" term. It is shown that in some situations the "dark radiation" can mimic spatial curvature and cause a chaotic behavior which is similar to chaotic dynamics in closed Universe with a scalar field.
We propose to control the orbits of the two-dimensional Rulkov model affected by bounded noise. For the correct parameter choice the phase space presents two chaotic regions separated by a transient chaotic region in between. One of the chaotic regions is the responsible to give birth to the neuronal bursting regime. Normally, an orbit in this chaotic region cannot pass through the transient chaotic one and reach the other chaotic region. As a consequence the burstings are short in time. Here, we propose a control technique to connect both chaotic regions and allow the neuron to exhibit very l…
In this work we deal with the Hénon and the Lozi map for a choice of parameters where they show transient chaos. Orbits close to the chaotic saddle behave chaotically for a while to eventually escape to an external attractor. Traditionally, to prevent such an escape, the partial control technique has been applied. This method stands out for considering disturbances (noise) affecting the map and for finding a special region of the phase space, called the safe set, where the control required to sustain the orbits is small. However, in this work we will apply a new approach of the partial control…
Transient chaos is a characteristic behavior in nonlinear dynamics where trajectories in a certain region of phase space behave chaotically for a while, before escaping to an external attractor. In some situations the escapes are highly undesirable, so that it would be necessary to avoid such a situation. In this paper we apply a control method known as partial control that allows one to prevent the escapes of the trajectories to the external attractors, keeping the trajectories in the chaotic region forever. To illustrate how the method works, we have chosen the Lorenz system for a choice of …
We study the dynamical states that emerge in a small-world network of recurrently coupled excitable neurons through both numerical and analytical methods. These dynamics depend in large part on the fraction of long-range connections or `short-cuts' and the delay in the neuronal interactions. Persistent activity arises for a small fraction of `short-cuts', while a transition to failure occurs at a critical value of the `short-cut' density. The persistent activity consists of multi-stable periodic attractors, the number of which is at least on the order of the number of neurons in the network. F…
Understanding irreversibility in macrophysics from reversible microphysics has been the holy grail in statistical physics ever since the mid-19th century. Here the central question concerns the arrow of time, which boils down to deriving macroscopic emergent irreversibility from microscopic reversible equations of motion. As suggested by Boltzmann, this irreversibility amounts to improbability (rather than impossibility) of the second-law-violating events. Later studies suggest that this improbability arises from a fractal attractor which is dynamically generated in phase space in reversible d…
The transient chaos regime in a two-dimensional system with discrete time (Eno map) is considered. It is demonstrated that a time series corresponding to this regime differs from a chaotic series constructed for close values of the control parameters by the presence of "nonregular" regions, the number of which increases with the critical parameter. A possible mechanism of this effect is discussed.
We investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of classical particles in a driven quasiperiodic lattice based on the Fibonacci sequence. An intricate transient dynamics of extraordinarily long ballistic flights at distinct velocities is found. We argue how these transients are caused and can be under- stood by a hierarchy of block decompositions of the quasiperiodic lattice. A comparison to the cases of periodic and fully randomized lattices is performed.
Motivated by the realization of magnetic monopole of Berry curvature by the energy crossing point, we theoretically study the effect of magnetic monopole under a uniform electric field in the semiclassical dynamics, which is relevant to many physical situations such as relaxation through the diabolic point. We found that the competition between the backward scattering by the monopole magnetic field and the acceleration by the electric field leads to the bound state, i.e., capture of a particle near the monopole. Furthermore, the nonlinearity induced by the magnetic monopole leads to the chaoti…
In this letter, we report a numerical study on the collective dynamics of two mutually coupled Thomas oscillators with linear/nonlinear coupling in a dynamic environment. We claim our model calculations can explain the diffusion of interacting particles in a fluid. In an ordinary fluid, frequent momentum transfer between particles keeps the particles in a fluid moving together with correlated time behaviour. The diffusion of interacting particles in a dynamic environment like this is a nonequilibrium phenomenon and is similar to the observed transient chaotic dynamics in the model. The detaile…
This is the third paper of the series of our studies of the one-dimensional self-gravitating many-body systems. In this paper, we thus study the transition phenomena after the first transition from a quasiequilibrium. We found that irrespective of the initial conditions, the system wanders between many states which yield the same properties of the quasiequilibrium as the water-bag. This itinerancy is most prominent in the time scale $t\sim 10^5 \sim 10^6 t_c$. In the midway between two succeeding quasiequilibria, the system experiences a transient state, where one particle keeps exclusive high…
We consider the internal dynamics of the polymer molecule which is injected in the chaotic flow with strong mean shear component. The flow geometry corresponds to the recent experiments on the elastic turbulence (Groisman, Steinberg 2000). The passive polymer in such flows experiences aperiodic tumbling. We present a detailed study of the statistical properties of such polymer dynamics. First we obtain the stationary probability distribution function of the polymer orientation. Secondly we find the distribution of the time periods between consequent events of tumbling, and finally we find the …
A theoretical study of delayed feedback in spin-torque nano-oscillators is presented. A macrospin geometry is considered, where self-sustained oscillations are made possible by spin transfer torques associated with spin currents flowing perpendicular to the film plane. By tuning the delay and amplification of the self-injected signal, we identify dynamical regimes in this system such as chaos, switching between precession modes with complex transients, and oscillator death. Such delayed feedback schemes open up a new field of exploration for such oscillators, where the complex transient states…
In this paper we investigate deterministic diffusion in systems which are spatially extended in certain directions but are restricted in size and open in other directions, consequently particles can escape. We introduce besides the diffusion coefficient D on the chaotic repeller a coefficient ${\hat D}$ which measures the broadening of the distribution of trajectories during the transient chaotic motion. Both coefficients are explicitly computed for one-dimensional models, and they are found to be different in most cases. We show furthermore that a jump develops in both of the coefficients for…
Chaos is an inherently dynamical phenomenon traditionally studied for trajectories that are either permanently erratic or transiently influenced by permanently erratic ones lying on a set of measure zero. The latter gives rise to the final state sensitivity observed in connection with fractal basin boundaries in conservative scattering systems and driven dissipative systems. Here we focus on the most prevalent case of undriven dissipative systems, whose transient dynamics fall outside the scope of previous studies since no time-dependent solutions can exist for asymptotically long times. We sh…
The presence of a nonattractive chaotic set, also called chaotic saddle, in phase space implies the appearance of a finite time kind of chaos that is known as transient chaos. For a given dynamical system in a certain region of phase space with transient chaos, trajectories eventually abandon the chaotic region escaping to an external attractor, if no external intervention is done on the system. In some situations, this attractor may involve an undesirable behavior, so the application of a control in the system is necessary to avoid it. Both, the nonattractive nature of transient chaos and eve…
We report on the experimental investigation of the dependence of the elastic enhancement, i.e., enhancement of scattering in backward direction over scattering in other directions of a wave-chaotic system with partially violated time-reversal (T ) invariance on its openness. The elastic enhancement factor is a characteristic of quantum chaotic scattering which is of particular importance in experiments, like compound-nuclear reactions, where only cross sections, i.e., the moduli of the associated scattering matrix elements are accessible. In the experiment a quantum billiard with the shape of …
While the chimera states themselves are usually believed to be chaotic transients, the involvement of chaos behind their self-organization is not properly distinguished or studied. In this work, we demonstrate that small chimeras in the local flux dynamics of an array of magnetically coupled superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) driven by an external field are born through transiently chaotic dynamics. We deduce analytic expressions for small chimeras and synchronous states which correspond to nonchaotic attractors in the model. We also numerically study the bifurcations underl…
A transient chaos in a closed FRW cosmological model with a scalar field is studied. We describe two different chaotic regimes and show that the type of chaos in this model depends on the scalar field potential. We have found also that for sufficiently steep potentials or for potentials with large cosmological constant the chaotic behavior disappears.
We investigate the hopping dynamics between different attractors in a multistable system under the influence of noise. Using symbolic dynamics we find a sudden increase of dynamical entropies, when a system parameter is varied. This effect is explained by a novel bifurcation involving two chaotic saddles. We also demonstrate that the transient lifetimes on the saddle obey a scaling law in analogy to crisis.
Chaotic flows drive mixing and efficient transport in fluids, as well as the associated beautiful complex patterns familiar to us from our every day life experience. Generating such flows at small scales where viscosity takes over is highly challenging from both the theoretical and engineering perspectives. This can be overcome by introducing a minuscule amount of long flexible polymers, resulting in a chaotic flow dubbed \textit{elastic turbulence}. At the basis of the theoretical frameworks for its study lie the assumptions of a spatially smooth and random-in-time velocity field. Previous me…
We consider the chaotic dynamics of the interaction between an ensemble of two-level atoms in a high-Q Fabry-Perot cavity with a single mode of self-consistent field and with an external amplitude-modulated field. It is shown that in the case of an exact atom-field resonance and at the initial population of the atomic ground state, the Hamiltonian chaos in the system is always transient. The differences in the chaotic dynamics for the Fabry-Perot and ring cavity geometries are considered. The conditions for the experimental observation of the transient Hamiltonian chaos are discussed.
The dynamical properties of a particle in a gravitational field colliding with a rigid wall moving with piecewise constant velocity are studied. The linear nature of the wall's motion permits further analytical investigation than is possible for the system's sinusoidal counterpart. We consider three distinct approaches to modeling collisions: (i) elastic, (ii) inelastic with constant restitution coefficient and (iii) inelastic with a velocity-dependent restitution function. We confirm the existence of distinct unbounded orbits (Fermi acceleration) in the elastic model, and investigate regular …
Synchronization is the process of achieving identical dynamics among coupled identical units. If the units are different from each other, their dynamics cannot become identical; yet, after transients, there may emerge a functional relationship between them -- a phenomenon termed "generalized synchronization." Here, we show that the concept of transient uncoupling, recently introduced for synchronizing identical units, also supports generalized synchronization among nonidentical chaotic units. Generalized synchronization can be achieved by transient uncoupling even when it is impossible by regu…
In this paper, we numerically study the stochastic and the deterministic occasional uncoupling methods of effecting identical synchronized states in low dimensional, dissipative, diffusively coupled, chaotic flows that are otherwise not synchronized when continuously coupled at the same coupling strength parameter. In the process of our attempt to understand the mechanisms behind the success of the occasional uncoupling schemes, we devise a hybrid between the transient uncoupling and the stochastic on-off coupling, and aptly name it the transient stochastic uncoupling---yet another stochastic …
We test the applicability of the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation formula on a nonequilibrium version of the periodic Ehrenfest wind-tree model. This is a one-particle system whose dynamics is rather complex (e.g. it appears to be diffusive at equilibrium), but its Lyapunov exponents are nonpositive. For small applied field, the system exhibits a very long transient, during which the dynamics is roughly chaotic, followed by asymptotic collapse on a periodic orbit. During the transient, the dynamics is diffusive, and the fluctuations of the current are found to be in agreement with the fluctuation …
We obtain a description of the Poincaré recurrences of chaotic systems in terms of the ergodic theory of transient chaos. It is based on the equivalence between the recurrence time distribution and an escape time distribution obtained by leaking the system and taking a special initial ensemble. This ensemble is atypical in terms of the natural measure of the leaked system, the conditionally invariant measure. Accordingly, for general initial ensembles, the average recurrence and escape times are different. However, we show that the decay rate of these distributions is always the same. Our resu…
We propose a self-supervised cluster-based hierarchical reduced-order modelling methodology to model and analyse the complex dynamics arising from a sequence of bifurcations for a two-dimensional incompressible flow of the unforced fluidic pinball. The hierarchy is guided by a triple decomposition separating a slowly varying base flow, dominant shedding and secondary flow structures. All these flow components are kinematically resolved by a hierarchy of clusters, starting with the base flow in the first layer, resolving the vortex shedding in the second layer and distilling the secondary flow …
The spatiotemporal dynamics of an excitable medium with multiple spiral defects is shown to vary smoothly with system size from short-lived transients for small systems to extensive chaos for large systems. A comparison of the Lyapunov dimension density with the average spiral defect density suggests an average dimension per spiral defect varying between three and seven. We discuss some implications of these results for experimental studies of excitable media.
In order to simulate observational and experimental situations, we consider a leak in the phase space of a chaotic dynamical system. We obtain an expression for the escape rate of the survival probability applying the theory of transient chaos. This expression improves previous estimates based on the properties of the closed system and explains dependencies on the position and size of the leak and on the initial ensemble. With a subtle choice of the initial ensemble, we obtain an equivalence to the classical problem of Poincare recurrences in closed systems, which is treated in the same framew…
