Chaotic behavior can be produced from difference equations with unstable fixed points. Difference equations can be used for algorithms to control the chaotic behavior by perturbing a system parameter using feedback based on the first difference of the system value. This results in a system of nonlinear first order difference equations whose stable fixed point is the controlled chaotic behavior. Basing the feedback on the first difference produces distinctly different transient responses than when basing feedback on the error from the fixed point. Analog electronic circuits provide the experimental system for testing the chaos control algorithm. The circuits are low-cost, relatively easy to construct, and therefore provide a useful transition towards more specialized real-world applications. Here we present predictions and experimental results for the transient responses of a first difference based feedback control method applied to a chaotic finite difference 1-dimensional map. The experimental results are in good agreement with predictions, showing a variety of behaviors for the transient response, including erratic appearing non-steady convergence.
In [1], it is shown that the Rabinovich-Fabrikant (RF) system admits self-excited and hidden chaotic attractors. In this paper, we further show that the RF system also admits a pair of symmetric transient hidden chaotic attractors. We reveal more extremely rich dynamics of this system, such as a new kind of "virtual saddles".
A phenomenon of weak transient chaos is discussed that is caused by sub-exponential divergence of trajectories in the basin of a non-chaotic attractor. Such a regime is not easy to detect, because conventional characteristics, such as the largest Lyapunov exponent is non-positive. Here we study, how such a divergence can be exposed and detected. First, we show that weak transient chaos can be exposed if a small random perturbation is added to the system, leading to positive values of the largest Lyapunov exponent. Second, we introduce an alternative definition of the Lyapunov exponent, which a…
In this work, we report the enhanced stability of induced synchronization observed through transient uncoupling in a class of unidirectionally coupled identical chaotic systems. The phenomenon of transient uncoupling implies the clipping of the chaotic attractor of the driven system in a drive-driven scenario and making the coupling strength active over the clipped regions. The {\emph{Master Stability Function}} (MSF) is used to determine the stability of the synchronized states for a finite clipping fraction in unidirectionally coupled chaotic systems subjected to transient uncoupling for fix…
The transient chaos regime in a two-dimensional system with discrete time (Eno map) is considered. It is demonstrated that a time series corresponding to this regime differs from a chaotic series constructed for close values of the control parameters by the presence of "nonregular" regions, the number of which increases with the critical parameter. A possible mechanism of this effect is discussed.
We use the Hénon-Heiles system as a paradigmatic model for chaotic scattering to study the Lorentz factor effects on its transient chaotic dynamics. In particular, we focus on how time dilation occurs within the scattering region by measuring the time in a clock attached to the particle. We observe that the several events of time dilation that the particle undergoes exhibit sensitivity to initial conditions. However, the structure of the singularities appearing in the escape time function remains invariant under coordinate transformations. This occurs because the singularities are closely rela…
External and internal factors may cause a system's parameter to vary with time before it stabilizes. This drift induces a regime shift when the parameter crosses a bifurcation. Here, we study the case of an infinite dimensional system: a time-delayed oscillator whose time delay varies at a small but non-negligible rate. Our research shows that due to this parameter drift, trajectories from a chaotic attractor tip to other states with a certain probability. This causes the appearance of the phenomenon of transient chaos. By using an ensemble approach, we find a gamma distribution of transient l…
In this paper, we report the enhanced stability of induced synchronization by transient uncoupling observed in certain unidirectionally coupled second-order chaotic systems. The stability of synchronization observed in the coupled systems subjected to transient uncoupling is analyzed using the {\emph{Master Stability Function}}. The existence of the coupled systems in stable synchronized states over a certain range of the clipping fraction of the driven system is identified. The enhanced stable synchronized states are obtained for fixed values of clipping fraction in certain second-order chaot…
In this article, on the example of the known low-order dynamical models, namely Lorenz, Rossler and Vallis systems, the difficulties of reliable numerical analysis of chaotic dynamical systems are discussed. For the Lorenz system, the problems of existence of hidden chaotic attractors and hidden transient chaotic sets and their numerical investigation are considered. The problems of the numerical characterization of a chaotic attractor by calculating finite-time time Lyapunov exponents and finite-time Lyapunov dimension along one trajectory are demonstrated using the example of computing unsta…
A four-dimensional four-parameter Chua model with cubic nonlinearity is studied applying numerical continuation and numerical solutions methods. Regarding numerical solution methods, its dynamics is characterized on Lyapunov and isoperiodic diagrams and regarding numerical continuation method, the bifurcation curves are obtained. Combining both methods the bifurcation structures of the model were obtained with the possibility to describe the {\it shrimp}-shaped domains and their endoskeletons. We study the effect of a parameter that controls the dimension of the system leading the model to pre…
Transient chaos is a characteristic behavior in nonlinear dynamics where trajectories in a certain region of phase space behave chaotically for a while, before escaping to an external attractor. In some situations the escapes are highly undesirable, so that it would be necessary to avoid such a situation. In this paper we apply a control method known as partial control that allows one to prevent the escapes of the trajectories to the external attractors, keeping the trajectories in the chaotic region forever. To illustrate how the method works, we have chosen the Lorenz system for a choice of …
Traditional studies of chaos in conservative and driven dissipative systems have established a correspondence between sensitive dependence on initial conditions and fractal basin boundaries, but much less is known about the relation between geometry and dynamics in undriven dissipative systems. These systems can exhibit a prevalent form of complex dynamics, dubbed doubly transient chaos because not only typical trajectories but also the (otherwise invariant) chaotic saddles are transient. This property, along with a manifest lack of scale invariance, has hindered the study of the geometric pro…

Master-slave systems have been intensively investigated to model the application of chaos to communications. We considered Colpitts oscillators coupled according to a master-slave configuration to study chaos synchronisation. We revealed the existence of super persistent transients in this coupled system. Moreover, we showed that an additive noise added to the slave system may suppress chaos synchronisation. When synchronisation is not suppressed, the noise induces longer transients.
This report unravels frustration as a source of transient chaotic dynamics even in a simple array of coupled limit cycle oscillators. The transient chaotic dynamics along with the multistable nature of frustrated systems facilitates the existence of complex basin structures such as fractal and riddled basins. In particular, we report the emergence of transient chaotic dynamics around the chaotic itinerancy region, where the basin of attraction near the chaotic region is riddled and it becomes fractal basin when we move away from this region. Normally the complex basin structures are observed o…
We propose a neural network model with transient chaos, or a transiently chaotic neural network (TCNN) as an approximation method for combinatorial optimization problem, by introducing transiently chaotic dynamics into neural networks. Unlike conventional neural networks only with point attractors, the proposed neural network has richer and more flexible dynamics, so that it can be expected to have higher ability of searching for globally optimal or near-optimal solutions. A significant property of this model is that the chaotic neurodynamics is temporarily generated for searching and self-org…
Hierarchy of one and many-parameter families of random trigonometric chaotic maps and one-parameter random elliptic chaotic maps of $\bf{cn}$ type with an invariant measure have been introduced. Using the invariant measure (Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen measure), the Kolmogrov-Sinai entropy of the random chaotic maps have been calculated analytically, where the numerical simulations support the results
Hierarchy of one-parameter families of chaotic maps with an invariant measure have been introduced, where their appropriate coupling has lead to the generation of some coupled chaotic maps with an invariant measure. It is shown that these chaotic maps (also the coupled maps) do not undergo any period doubling or period-n-tupling cascade bifurcation to chaos, but they have either single fixed point attractor at certain values of the parameters or they are ergodic in the complementary region. Using the invariant measure or Sinai-Rulle-Bowen measure the Kolmogrov-Sinai entropy of the chaotic maps…
We describe a method for determining the transient process duration in a standard two-dimensionaldynamic system with discrete time (Henon map), occurring in the regime of chaotic oscillations
We give a qualitative description of two main routes to chaos in three-dimensional maps. We discuss Shilnikov scenario of transition to spiral chaos and a scenario of transition to discrete Lorenz-like and figure-eight strange attractors. The theory is illustrated by numerical analysis of three-dimensional Henon-like maps and Poincare maps in models of nonholonomic mechanics.
We introduce an interesting hierarchy of rational order chaotic maps that posses an invariant measure. In contrast to the previously introduced hierarchy of chaotic maps \cite{J1,J2,J3,J4,J5}, with merely entropy production, the rational order chaotic maps can simultaneously produce and consume entropy . We compute the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of theses maps analytically and also their Lyapunov exponent numerically, where that obtained numerical results support the analytical calculations.
We study cosmological dynamics of a flat Randall-Sundrum brane with a scalar field and a negative "dark radiation" term. It is shown that in some situations the "dark radiation" can mimic spatial curvature and cause a chaotic behavior which is similar to chaotic dynamics in closed Universe with a scalar field.
Fundamental problems of periodicity and transient process to periodicity of chaotic trajectories in computer realization with finite computation precision is investigated by taking single and coupled Logistic maps as examples. Empirical power law relations of the period and transient iterations with the computation precisions and the sizes of coupled systems are obtained. For each computation we always find, by randomly choosing initial conditions, a single dominant periodic trajectory which is realized with major portion of probability. These understandings are useful for possible application…
While the chimera states themselves are usually believed to be chaotic transients, the involvement of chaos behind their self-organization is not properly distinguished or studied. In this work, we demonstrate that small chimeras in the local flux dynamics of an array of magnetically coupled superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) driven by an external field are born through transiently chaotic dynamics. We deduce analytic expressions for small chimeras and synchronous states which correspond to nonchaotic attractors in the model. We also numerically study the bifurcations underl…
Excitable media can develop spiral chaos, in which the number of spirals changes chaotically with time. Depending on parameter values in dynamical equations, spiral chaos may permanently persist or spontaneously arrive at a steady state after a transient time, referred to as the lifetime. Previous numerical studies have demonstrated that the lifetime of transient spiral chaos increases exponentially with system size to a good approximation. In this study, using the fact that the number of spirals obeys a Gaussian distribution, we provide a general expression for the system size dependence of t…
A method for the semiclassical quantization of chaotic maps is proposed, which is based on harmonic inversion. The power of the technique is demonstrated for the baker's map as a prototype example of a chaotic map.
The presence of a nonattractive chaotic set, also called chaotic saddle, in phase space implies the appearance of a finite time kind of chaos that is known as transient chaos. For a given dynamical system in a certain region of phase space with transient chaos, trajectories eventually abandon the chaotic region escaping to an external attractor, if no external intervention is done on the system. In some situations, this attractor may involve an undesirable behavior, so the application of a control in the system is necessary to avoid it. Both, the nonattractive nature of transient chaos and eve…
A revised self-synchronizing stream cipher based on chaotic coupled maps is proposed. This system adds input and output functions aim to strengthen its security. The system performs basic floating-point analytical computation on real numbers, incorporating auxiliarily with algebraic operations on integer numbers.
We present the results of an experimental study of the elastic enhancement factor W for a microwave rectangular cavity simulating a two-dimensional quantum billiard in a transient region between regular and chaotic dynamics. The cavity was coupled to a vector network analyzer via two microwave antennas. The departure of the system from the integrable one due to presence of antennas acting as scatterers is characterised by the parameter of chaoticity k = 2.8. The experimental results for the rectangular cavity are compared with the ones obtained for a microwave rough cavity simulating a chaotic…
We generate new hierarchy of many-parameter family of maps of the interval [0,1] with an invariant measure, by composition of the chaotic maps of reference [1]. Using the measure, we calculate Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, or equivalently Lyapunov characteristic exponent, of these maps analytically, where the results thus obtained have been approved with numerical simulation. In contrary to the usual one-dimensional maps and similar to the maps of reference [1], these maps do not possess period doubling or period-n-tupling cascade bifurcation to chaos, but they have single fixed point attractor at…
We describe a method of control of chaos that occurs in area-preserving maps. This method is based on small modifications of the original map by addition of a small control term. We apply this control technique to the standard map and to the tokamap.
Synchronization of identical chaotic systems subjected to common noise has been the subject of recent research. Studies on several chaotic systems have shown that, the synchronization is actually induced by the non-zero mean of the noise, and symmetric noise with zero-mean cannot lead to synchronization. Here it is presented that synchronization can be achieved by {\sl zero-mean} noise in some chaotic maps with large convergence regions.
We give a hierarchy of many-parameter families of maps of the interval [0,1] with an invariant measure and using the measure, we calculate Kolmogorov--Sinai entropy of these maps analytically. In contrary to the usual one-dimensional maps these maps do not possess period doubling or period-n-tupling cascade bifurcation to chaos, but they have single fixed point attractor at certain region of parameters space, where they bifurcate directly to chaos without having period-n-tupling scenario exactly at certain values of the parameters.
In recent years, a growing number of cryptosystems based on chaos have been proposed. But most of them encountered many problems such as small key space and weak security. In the present paper, a new kind of chaotic cryptosystem based on Composition of Trigonometric Chaotic Maps is proposed. These maps which are defined as ratios of polynomials of degree N, have interesting properties such as invariant measure, ergodicity, variable chaotic region with respect to the control parameters and ability to construct composition form of maps. We have used a composition of chaotic map to shuffle the po…
We present several new easy ways of generating smooth one-dimensional maps displaying robust chaos, i.e., chaos for whole intervals of the parameter. Unlike what happens with previous methods, the Lyapunov exponent of the maps constructed here varies widely with the parameter. We show that the condition of negative Schwarzian derivative, which was used in previous works, is not a necessary condition for robust chaos. Finally we show that the maps constructed in previous works have always the Lyapunov exponent $\ln 2$ because they are conjugated to each other and to the tent map by means of smo…
One-dimensional maps exhibiting transient chaos and defined on two preimages of the unit interval [0,1] are investigated. It is shown that such maps have continuously many conditionally invariant measures $μ_σ$ scaling at the fixed point at x=0 as $x^σ$, but smooth elsewhere. Here $σ$ should be smaller than a critical value $σ_{c}$ that is related to the spectral properties of the Frobenius-Perron operator. The corresponding natural measures are proven to be entirely concentrated on the fixed point.
We consider a family of singular maps as an example of a simple model of dynamical systems exhibiting the property of robust chaos on a well defined range of parameters. Critical boundaries separating the region of robust chaos from the region where stable fixed points exist are calculated on the parameter space of the system. It is shown that the transitions to robust chaos in these systems occur either through the routes of type-I or type-III intermittency and the critical boundaries for each type of transition have been determined on the phase diagram of the system. The simplicity of these …
We study the regime of anticipated synchronization in unidirectionally coupled chaotic maps such that the slave map has its own output reinjected after a certain delay. For a class of simple maps, we give analytic conditions for the stability of the synchronized solution, and present results of numerical simulations of coupled 1D Bernoulli-like maps and 2D Baker maps, that agree well with the analytic predictions.
Partial control is a technique used in systems with transient chaos. The aim of this control method is to avoid the escape of the orbits from a region Q of the phase space where the transient chaotic dynamics takes place. This technique is based on finding a special subset of Q called the safe set. The chaotic orbit can be sustained in the safe set with a minimum amount of control. In this work we develop a control strategy to gradually lead any chaotic orbit in Q to the safe set by using the safety function. With the technique proposed here, the safe set can be converted into a global attract…
We give hierarchy of one-parameter family F(a,x) of maps of the interval [0,1] with an invariant measure. Using the measure, we calculate Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, or equivalently Lyapunov characteristic exponent, of these maps analytically, where the results thus obtained have been approved with numerical simulation. In contrary to the usual one-parameter family of maps such as logistic and tent maps, these maps do not possess period doubling or period-n-tupling cascade bifurcation to chaos, but they have single fixed point attractor at certain parameter values, where they bifurcate directly …
We present hierarchy of one and many-parameter families of elliptic chaotic maps of cn and sn types at the interval [0,1]. It is proved that for small values of k the parameter of the elliptic function, these maps are topologically conjugate to the maps of references [1,2], where using this we have been able to obtain the invariant measure of these maps for small k and thereof it is shown that these maps have the same Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy or equivalently Lyapunov characteristic exponent of the maps of references [1,2]}. As this parameter vanishes, the maps are reduced to the maps presented…
The properties of functional relation between a non-invertible chaotic drive and a response map in the regime of generalized synchronization of chaos are studied. It is shown that despite a very fuzzy image of the relation between the current states of the maps, the functional relation becomes apparent when a sufficient interval of driving trajectory is taken into account. This paper develops a theoretical framework of such functional relation and illustrates the main theoretical conclusions using numerical simulations.
In pipes and channels, the onset of turbulence is initially dominated by localized transients, which lead to sustained turbulence through their collective dynamics. In the present work, we study the localized turbulence in pipe flow numerically and elucidate a state space structure that gives rise to transient chaos. Starting from the basin boundary separating laminar and turbulent flow, we identify transverse homoclinic orbits, the presence of which necessitates a homoclinic tangle and chaos. A direct consequence of the homoclinic tangle is the fractal nature of the laminar-turbulent boundary…
Sensitivity analysis in chaotic dynamical systems is a challenging task from a computational point of view. In this work, we present a numerical investigation of a novel approach, known as the space-split sensitivity or S3 algorithm. The S3 algorithm is an ergodic-averaging method to differentiate statistics in ergodic, chaotic systems, rigorously based on the theory of hyperbolic dynamics. We illustrate S3 on one-dimensional chaotic maps, revealing its computational advantage over naive finite difference computations of the same statistical response. In addition, we provide an intuitive expla…
Chaos is an inherently dynamical phenomenon traditionally studied for trajectories that are either permanently erratic or transiently influenced by permanently erratic ones lying on a set of measure zero. The latter gives rise to the final state sensitivity observed in connection with fractal basin boundaries in conservative scattering systems and driven dissipative systems. Here we focus on the most prevalent case of undriven dissipative systems, whose transient dynamics fall outside the scope of previous studies since no time-dependent solutions can exist for asymptotically long times. We sh…
In this paper we investigate deterministic diffusion in systems which are spatially extended in certain directions but are restricted in size and open in other directions, consequently particles can escape. We introduce besides the diffusion coefficient D on the chaotic repeller a coefficient ${\hat D}$ which measures the broadening of the distribution of trajectories during the transient chaotic motion. Both coefficients are explicitly computed for one-dimensional models, and they are found to be different in most cases. We show furthermore that a jump develops in both of the coefficients for…
The local density of states (LDOS) is a distribution that characterizes the effect of perturbations on quantum systems. Recently, it was proposed a semiclassical theory for the LDOS of chaotic billiards and maps. This theory predicts that the LDOS is a Breit-Wigner distribution independent of the perturbation strength and also gives a semiclassical expression for the LDOS witdth. Here, we test the validity of such an approximation in quantum maps varying the degree of chaoticity, the region in phase space where the perturbation is applying and the intensity of the perturbation. We show that fo…
We investigate the phenomenon of chaos synchronization in systems subject to coexisting autonomous and external global fields by employing a simple model of coupled maps. Two states of chaos synchronization are found: (i) complete synchronization, where the maps synchronize among themselves and to the external field, and (ii) generalized or internal synchronization, where the maps synchronize among themselves but not to the external global field. We show that the stability conditions for both states can be achieved for a system of minimum size of two maps. We consider local maps possessing rob…
We study a network of logistic maps with two types of global coupling, inertial and dissipative. Features of the clusterization process are revealed and compared, which are associated with presence of each type of couplings. For the parameter region near the onset of chaos we outline scaling properties in dynamical behavior of the network and illustrate them on the Kaneko phase diagrams.
We consider the chaotic dynamics of the interaction between an ensemble of two-level atoms in a high-Q Fabry-Perot cavity with a single mode of self-consistent field and with an external amplitude-modulated field. It is shown that in the case of an exact atom-field resonance and at the initial population of the atomic ground state, the Hamiltonian chaos in the system is always transient. The differences in the chaotic dynamics for the Fabry-Perot and ring cavity geometries are considered. The conditions for the experimental observation of the transient Hamiltonian chaos are discussed.
Though considerable effort has recently been devoted to hardware realization of chaotic maps, the analysis generally neglects the influence of implementation inaccuracies. Here we investigate the consequences of S/H errors on Bernoulli shift, tent map and tailed tent map systems: an error model is proposed and implementations are characterized under its assumptions.
A generalized method is proposed to compose new orbits from a given chaotic map. The method provides an approach to examine discrete-time chaotic maps in a "deep-zoom" manner by using $k$-digits to the right from the decimal separator of a given point from the underlying chaotic map. Interesting phenomena have been identified. Rapid randomization was observed, i.e. chaotic patterns tend to become indistinguishable, when compared to the original orbits of the underlying chaotic map. Our results were presented using different graphical analyses (i.e., time-evolution, bifurcation diagram, Lyapuno…
