We perform the Hamiltonian analysis of unimodular gravity in terms of the connection representation. The unimodular condition is imposed straightforwardly into the action with a Lagrange multiplier. After classifying constraints into first class and second class, the canonical quantization is carried out. We consider the difference of the corresponding physical states between unimodular gravity and general relativity.
Unimodular gravity (UG) is an important theory which may explain the smallness of the cosmological constant. To get insight into the covariant quantization of UG, we discuss the BRST quantization of General Relativity (GR) with a cosmological constant in the unimodular gauge. We develop a novel way to gauge fix the transverse diffeomorphism (TDiff) and then further to fulfill the unimodular gauge. This process requires the introduction of an additional pair of BRST doublets which decouple from the physical sector together with the other three pairs of BRST doublets for the TDiff. We show that …
We study the quantization of two versions of unimodular gravity, namely, fully diffeomorphism-invariant unimodular gravity and unimodular gravity with fixed metric determinant utilizing standard path integral approach. We derive the BRST symmetry of effective actions corresponding to several relevant gauge conditions. We observe that for some gauge conditions, the restricted gauge structure may complicate the formulation and effective actions, in particular, if the chosen gauge conditions involve the canonical momentum conjugate to the induced metric on the spatial hypersurface. The BRST symme…
Several alternative formulations of the first order approach to unimodular gravity are presented. There is always a particular one such that it is {\em classically} equivalent to the second order formulation; this we call {\em educated}. It is often at variance with the {\em naive} approach, in which the lagrangian is taken as given exactly by the same expression as in the second order formulation; only the number and character of the independent variables changes. Namely, typically some of the momenta are now considered as coordinates. The ensuing Hamiltonians are thereby discussed and their …
In our previous paper, we have presented a covariant BRST quantization of unimodular gravity which may account for the smallness of the cosmological constant, and have shown that the physical degrees of freedom in the theory are the same as general relativity. The formulation has been given by using rank-2 antisymmetric tensor fields for both ghosts and antighosts. Here we give an alternative formulation using a vector field for the antighost but keeping the same structure for the ghosts. This gives a significantly simpler covariant quantization with less ghosts and no tripole modes in the gho…
Unimodular gravity (UG) is an interesting theory that may explain why the cosmological constant is extremely small, in contrast to general relativity (GR). The theory has only the transverse diffeomorphism invariance and this causes lots of debate as to the equivalence of UG to GR in the covariant quantization. We study the covariant BRST quantization of UG by gauge fixing only the transverse diffeomorphism and show that the remaining physical degrees of freedom are two, the same number as GR. This is achieved by using antisymmetric tensor ghost fields which automatically satisfy the transvers…
In this short note we study unimodular gravity in Weyl-De Donder formalism. We find corresponding Hamiltonian and study consequence of the unimodular constraint on the conjugate covariant momenta. We also find covariant Hamiltonian for Henneaux-Teitelboim unimodular action and study corresponding equations of motion.
The unimodular theory of gravity admits a canonical quantization of minisuperspace models without the problem of time. We derive instead a kind of Schrödinger equation. We have found unitarily evolving wave packet solutions for the special case of a massless scalar field and a spatially flat Friedmann universe. We show that the longterm behaviour of the expectation values of the canonical quantities corresponds to the evolution of the classical variables. The solutions provided in an explicit example can be continued beyond the singularity at t=0, passing a finite minimal extension of the univ…
A cosmological time variable is emerged from the hamiltonian formulation of unimodular theory of gravity to measure the evolution of dynamical observables in the theory. A set of constants of motion has been identified for the theory on the null hypersurfaces that its evolution is with respect to the volume clock introduced by the cosmological time variable.
In the context of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity we establish the Hamiltonian formulation of the unimodular theory of gravity. Here we do not carry out the usual $3+1$ decomposition of the field quantities in terms of the lapse and shift functions, as in the ADM formalism. The corresponding Lagrange multiplier is the timelike component of the tetrad field. The dynamics is determined by the Hamiltonian constraint ${\cal H}'_0$ and a set of primary constraints. The constraints are first class and satisfy an algebra that is similar to the algebra of the Poincaré group.
We work out the description of the gauge symmetry of unimodular gravity in the constrained Hamiltonian formalism. In particular, we demonstrate how the transversality conditions restricting the diffeomorphism parameters emerge from the algebra of the Hamiltonian constraints. The alternative form is long known as parametrizing the volume preserving diffeomorphisms by unrestricted two-forms instead of the transverse vector fields. This gauge symmetry is reducible. We work out the Hamiltonian description of this form of unimodular gravity (UG) gauge symmetry. Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin--Batalin-Fr…
We give a detailed account of the Hamiltonian GNH analysis of the parametrized unimodular extension of the Holst action. The purpose of the paper is to derive, through the clear geometric picture furnished by the GNH method, a simple Hamiltonian formulation for this model and explain why it is difficult to arrive at it in other approaches. We will also show how to take advantage of the field equations to anticipate the simple form of the constraints that we find in the paper.
Unimodular gravity is classically equivalent to standard Einstein gravity, but differs when it comes to the quantum theory: The conformal factor is non-dynamical, and the gauge symmetry consists of transverse diffeomorphisms only. Furthermore, the cosmological constant is not renormalized. Thus the quantum theory is distinct from a quantization of standard Einstein gravity. Here we show that within a truncation of the full Renormalization Group flow of unimodular quantum gravity, there is a non-trivial ultraviolet-attractive fixed point, yielding a UV completion for unimodular gravity. We disc…
We formally prove the existence of a quantization procedure that makes the path integral of a general diffeomorphism-invariant theory of gravity, with fixed total spacetime volume, equivalent to that of its unimodular version. This is achieved by means of a partial gauge fixing of diffeomorphisms together with a careful definition of the unimodular measure. The statement holds also in the presence of matter. As an explicit example, we consider scalar-tensor theories and compute the corresponding logarithmic divergences in both settings. In spite of significant differences in the coupling of th…
We consider quantization of the positive curvature Friedmann cosmology in the unimodular modification of Einstein's theory, in which the spacetime four-volume appears as an explicit time variable. The Hamiltonian admits self-adjoint extensions that give unitary evolution in the Hilbert space associated with the Schrödinger equation. The semiclassical estimate to the no-boundary wave function of Hartle and Hawking is found. If this estimate is accurate, there is a continuous flux of probability into the configuration space from vanishing three-volume, and the no-boundary wave function evolves n…
Unimodular gravity is based on a modification of the usual Einstein-Hilbert action that allows one to recover general relativity with a dynamical cosmological constant. It also has the interesting property of providing, as the momentum conjugate to the cosmological constant, an emergent clock variable. In this paper we investigate the cosmological reduction of unimodular gravity, and its quantization within the framework of flat homogeneous and isotropic loop quantum cosmology. It is shown that the unimodular clock can be used to construct the physical state space, and that the fundamental fea…
We investigate path integral quantization of two versions of unimodular gravity. First a fully diffeomorphism-invariant theory is analyzed, which does not include a unimodular condition on the metric, while still being equivalent to other unimodular gravity theories at the classical level. The path integral has the same form as in general relativity (GR), except that the cosmological constant is an unspecified value of a variable, and it thus is unrelated to any coupling constant. When the state of the universe is a superposition of vacuum states, the path integral is extended to include an in…
The quantization of a single particle without spin in an appropriate curved space-time is considered. The Hamilton formalism on reduced space for a particle in a curved space-time is constructed and the main aspects of quantization scheme are developed. These investigations are applied to quantization of the particle Hamiltonian in an appropriate curved space-time. As an example the energy eigenvalues in Einstein universe are calculated. In the last sections o the paper approximation for small values of momenta of the results previously obtained is considered as well as quantization of polynom…
Since there are quantization ambiguities in constructing the Hamiltonian constraint operator in isotropic loop quantum cosmology, it is crucial to check whether the key features of loop quantum cosmology, such as the quantum bounce and effective scenario, are robust against the ambiguities. In this paper, we consider a typical quantization ambiguity arising from the quantization of the field strength of the gravitational connection. An alternative Hamiltonian constraint operator is constructed, which is shown to have the correct classical limit by the semiclassical analysis. The effective Hami…
We present and contrast two distinct ways of including extremal black holes in a Lorentzian Hamiltonian quantization of spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell theory. First, we formulate the classical Hamiltonian dynamics with boundary conditions appropriate for extremal black holes only. The Hamiltonian contains no surface term at the internal infinity, for reasons related to the vanishing of the extremal hole surface gravity, and quantization yields a vanishing black hole entropy. Second, we give a Hamiltonian quantization that incorporates extremal black holes as a limiting case of nonextre…
The Becci-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) operator quantization of a finite-dimensional gauge system featuring two quadratic super Hamiltonian and m linear supermomentum constraints is studied as a model for quantizing generally covariant gauge theories. The proposed model ``completely'' mimics the constraint algebra of General Relativity. The Dirac constraint operators are identified by realizing the BRST generator of the system as a Hermitian nilpotent operator, and a physical inner product is introduced to complete a consistent quantization procedure.
An approach to quantization of fields and gravity based on the De Donder-Weyl covariant Hamiltonian formalism is outlined. It leads to a hypercomplex extension of quantum mechanics in which the algebra of complex numbers is replaced by the space-time Clifford algebra and all space-time variables enter on equal footing. A covariant hypercomplex analogue of the Schrödinger equation is formulated. Elements of quantization of General Relativity within the present framework are sketched.
We show in this article how the usual hamiltonian formalism of General Relativity should be modified in order to allow the inclusion of the Euclidean classical solutions of Einstein's equations. We study the effect that the dynamical change of signature has on the superspace and we prove that it induces a passage of the signature of the supermetric from ($-+++++$) to ($+-----$). Next, all these features are more particularly studied on the example of minisuperspaces. Finally, we consider the problem of quantization of the Euclidean solutions. The consequences of different choices of boundary c…
We suggest a Lorentz non-invariant generalization of the unimodular gravity theory, which is classically equivalent to general relativity with a locally inert (devoid of local degrees of freedom) perfect fluid having an equation of state with a constant parameter $w$. For the range of $w$ near $-1$ this dark fluid can play the role of dark energy, while for $w=0$ this dark dust admits spatial inhomogeneities and can be interpreted as dark matter. We discuss possible implications of this model in the cosmological initial conditions problem. In particular, this is the extension of known microcan…
The main goal of this thesis is to quantize the Einstein-Hilbert action extended by the quadratic curvature terms within the canonical quantization approach, thus formulating quantum geometrodynamics of the higher derivative theories. The motivation is to provide an alternative to the standard canonical quantization based on the Einstein-Hilbert action alone, because the latter does not generate the quadratic curvature terms in the semiclassical limit. A particular formulation of a semiclassical approximation scheme is employed which ensures that the effects of the quadratic curvature terms be…
Anomaly freedom has been one of the most important issues in canonical quantization of gravity. In a physically meaningful (anomaly free) theory, the constraint operators must be first class, and their commutator algebra is expected to resemble the corresponding classical Poisson-bracket algebra. In this paper, we review the "constructive" approach to obtaining a consistent set of constraints: start with a Hamiltonian constraint and generate the corresponding diffeomorphism constraint as a commutator of two Hamiltonians. Closure of the constraint operator algebra then requires that the diffeom…
Since there are quantization ambiguities in constructing the Hamiltonian constraint operator in isotropic loop quantum cosmology, it is crucial to check whether the key features of loop quantum cosmology are robust against the ambiguities. In this paper, we quantize the Lorentz term of the gravitational Hamiltonian constraint in the spatially flat FRW model by two approaches different from that of the Euclidean term. One of the approaches is very similar to the treatment of the Lorentz part of Hamiltonian in loop quantum gravity and hence inherits more features from the full theory. Two symmet…
In this paper we can solve a Wheeler-DeWitt equation of the some inhomogeneous spacetime models as a local solution. From the previous study of up-to-down method we derived the static restriction relating the problem of the time. Although static restriction does not commute with the general Hamiltonian constraint, the Hamiltonian constraint of some mini-superspace models commute with static restriction. We can quantize such inhomogeneous models. With obtained result we can success to simplify the general local Hamiltonian constraint.
The Hamiltonian formalism of the generalized unimodular gravity theory, which was recently suggested as a model of dark energy, is shown to be a complicated example of constrained dynamical system. The set of its canonical constraints has a bifurcation -- splitting of the theory into two branches differing by the number and type of these constraints, one of the branches effectively describing a gravitating perfect fluid with the time-dependent equation of state, which can potentially play the role of dark energy in cosmology. The first class constraints in this branch generate local gauge symm…
We present a first attempt to apply the approach of deformation quantization to linearized Einstein's equations. We use the analogy with Maxwell equations to derive the field equations of linearized gravity from a modified Maxwell Lagrangian which allows the construction of a Hamiltonian in the standard way. The deformation quantization procedure for free fields is applied to this Hamiltonian. As a result we obtain the complete set of quantum states and its discrete spectrum.
One of the hardest problems to tackle in the dynamics of canonical approaches to quantum gravity is that of the Hamiltonian constraint. We investigate said problem in the context of formal geometric quantization. We study the implications of the non uniqueness in the choice of the vector field which satisfies the presymplectic equation for the Hamiltonian constraint, and study the implication of the same in the quantization of the theory. Our aim is to show that this non uniqueness in the choice of said vector field, which really stems from refoliation invariance leads to a very ambiguous noti…
The quantization of classical theories that admit more than one Hamiltonian description is considered. This is done from a geometrical viewpoint, both at the quantization level (geometric quantization) and at the level of the dynamics of the quantum theory. A spin-1/2 system is taken as an example in which all the steps can be completed. It is shown that the geometry of the quantum theory imposes restrictions on the physically allowed nonstandard quantum theories.
We consider a recently proposed generalization of unimodular gravity, where the lapse function is constrained to be equal to a function of the determinant of the spatial metric $f(h)$, as a potential origin of a dark fluid with a generally $h$-dependent equation of state parameter. We establish the Hamiltonian analysis and the canonical path integral for the theory. All the special cases that do not match unimodular gravity involve violation of general covariance, and consequently the physical content of the theory is changed significantly. Particularly, the case of a constant function $f$ is …
Starting from the Lagrangian formulation of the Einstein equations for the vacuum static spherically symmetric metric, we develop a canonical formalism in the radial variable $r$ that is time--like inside the Schwarzschild horizon. The Schwarzschild mass turns out to be represented by a canonical function that commutes with the $r$--Hamiltonian. We investigate the Wheeler--DeWitt quantization and give the general representation for the solution as superposition of eigenfunctions of the mass operator.
A relativistic Hamiltonian mechanical system is seen as a conservative Dirac constraint system on the cotangent bundle of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold. We provide geometric quantization of this cotangent bundle where the quantum constraint serves as a relativistic quantum equation.
We perform canonical quantization of gravity in the background of a Schwarzschild black hole in the generalized Regge-Wheeler gauge proposed in \cite{Kallosh:2021ors}. We find that the Hamiltonian at the quadratic level is unitary and ghost-free. Two canonical degrees of freedom are associated with Zerilli-Moncrief and Cunningham-Price-Moncrief functions of the metric perturbations. The ${\ell }<2$ part of the Hamiltonian vanishes. This quantization with the unitary Hamiltonian for gravity is valid also in Minkowski space in spherical coordinates.
We discuss recently introduced scale-free Einstein equations, where the information from their trace part is lost. These equations are classically equivalent to General Relativity, yet the Newton constant becomes a constant of integration or a global dynamical degree of freedom. Thus, from the point of view of standard quantization, this effective Newton constant is susceptible to quantum fluctuations. This is similar to what happens to the cosmological constant in the unimodular gravity where the trace part of the Einstein equations is lost in a different way. Using analogy with the Henneaux-…
The surface Hamiltonian corresponding to the surface part of a gravitational action has $xp$ structure where $p$ is conjugate momentum of $x$. Moreover, it leads to $TS$ on the horizon of a black hole. Here $T$ and $S$ are temperature and entropy of the horizon. Imposing the hermiticity condition we quantize this Hamiltonian. This leads to an equidistant spectrum of its eigenvalues. Using this we show that the entropy of the horizon is quantized. This analysis holds for any order of Lanczos-Lovelock gravity. For general relativity, the area spectrum is consistent with Bekenstein's observation.…
The De Donder-Weyl (DW) covariant Hamiltonian formulation of Palatini first-order Lagrangian of vielbein (tetrad) gravity and its precanonical quantization are presented. No splitting into the space and time is required in this formulation. Our recent generalization of Dirac brackets is used to treat the second class primary constraints appearing in the DW Hamiltonian formulation and to find the fundamental brackets. Quantization of the latter yields the representation of vielbeins as differential operators with respect to the spin connection coefficients, and the Dirac-like precanonical Schrö…
We analyze the hamiltonian quantization of Chern-Simons theory associated to the universal covering of the Lorentz group SO(3,1). The algebra of observables is generated by finite dimensional spin networks drawn on a punctured topological surface. Our main result is a construction of a unitary representation of this algebra. For this purpose, we use the formalism of combinatorial quantization of Chern-Simons theory, i.e we quantize the algebra of polynomial functions on the space of flat SL(2,C)-connections on a topological surface with punctures. This algebra admits a unitary representation a…
