The perturbative path-integral gives a morphism of the (quantum) $A_{\infty }$ structure intrinsic to each quantum field theory, which we show explicitly on the basis of the homological perturbation. As is known, in the BV formalism, any effective action also solves the BV master equation, which implies that the path-integral can be understood as a morphism of the BV differential. Since each solution of the BV master equation is in one-to-one correspondence with a (quantum) $A_{\infty }$ structure, the path-integral preserves this intrinsic $A_{\infty }$ structure of quantum field theory, where $A_{\infty }$ reduces to $L_{\infty }$ whenever multiplications of space-time fields are graded commutative. We apply these ideas to string field theory and (re-)derive some quantities based on the perturbative path-integral, such as effective theories with finite $α^{\prime }$, reduction of gauge and unphysical degrees, $S$-matrix and gauge invariant observables.
We study the appearance of anomalies of the Master Ward Identity, which is a universal renormalization condition in perturbative QFT. The main insight of the present paper is that any violation of the Master Ward Identity can be expressed as a LOCAL interacting field; this is a version of the well-known Quantum Action Principle of Lowenstein and Lam. Proceeding in a proper field formalism by induction on the order in $\hbar$, this knowledge about the structure of possible anomalies as well as techniques of algebraic renormalization are used to remove possible anomalies by finite renormalizatio…
We describe a covariant framework to construct a globalized version for the perturbative quantization of nonlinear split AKSZ Sigma Models on manifolds with and without boundary, and show that it captures the change of the quantum state as one changes the constant map around which one perturbs. This is done by using concepts of formal geometry. Moreover, we show that the globalized quantum state can be interpreted as a closed section with respect to an operator that squares to zero. This condition is a generalization of the modified Quantum Master Equation as in the BV-BFV formalism, which we …
We discuss the various aspects of two-dimensional $QCD_{2}(N\rightarrow\infty)$ (the 't Hooft model\cite{Hooft}). Our main interest (motivated by the corresponding analysis in the four dimensional QCD) is the vacuum structure of the theory. We use the very general methods in the analysis, such as dispersion relations and duality in order to relate the known spectrum of $QCD_2$ to the different vacuum characteristics. We explicitly calculate (in terms of physical parameters like masses and matrix elements) the chiral condensate as well as the mixed vacuum condensates: $$\la 0|\bar{q}(gε_{μν} G_…
We develop a general field-covariant approach to quantum gauge theories. Extending the usual set of integrated fields and external sources to "proper" fields and sources, which include partners of the composite fields, we define the master functional Omega, which collects one-particle irreducible diagrams and upgrades the usual Gamma-functional in several respects. The functional Omega is determined from its classical limit applying the usual diagrammatic rules to the proper fields. Moreover, it behaves as a scalar under the most general perturbative field redefinitions, which can be expressed…
Perturbation theory of vacuum spherically-symmetric spacetimes is a crucial tool to understand the dynamics of black hole perturbations. Spherical symmetry allows for an expansion of the perturbations in scalar, vector, and tensor harmonics. The resulting perturbative equations are decoupled for modes with different parity and different harmonic numbers. Moreover, for each harmonic and parity, the equations for the perturbations can be decoupled in terms of (gauge-invariant) master functions that satisfy 1+1 wave equations. By working in a completely general perturbative gauge, in this paper w…
We develop master equations to study perturbative stability of de Sitter Dynamical Fixed Points (DFPs) of strongly coupled massive quantum field theories in $d+1$ space-time dimensions with a holographic dual. The derived spectrum of linearized fluctuations characterizes the late-time dynamics of holographic strongly coupled non-conformal gauge theories in de Sitter background. Numerous checks and examples are presented.
The infinite tower of positive-helicity soft gravitons in any minimally coupled, tree-level, asymptotically flat four-dimensional (4D) gravity was recently shown to generate a $w_{1+\infty}$ asymptotic symmetry algebra. It is natural to ask whether this classical algebra acquires quantum corrections at loop level. We explore this in quantum self-dual gravity, whose amplitudes acquire known one-loop exact all-plus helicity quantum corrections. We show using collinear splitting formulae that, remarkably, the $w_{1+\infty}$ algebra persists in quantum self-dual gravity without corrections.
We review and develop the general properties of $L_\infty$ algebras focusing on the gauge structure of the associated field theories. Motivated by the $L_\infty$ homotopy Lie algebra of closed string field theory and the work of Roytenberg and Weinstein describing the Courant bracket in this language we investigate the $L_\infty$ structure of general gauge invariant perturbative field theories. We sketch such formulations for non-abelian gauge theories, Einstein gravity, and for double field theory. We find that there is an $L_\infty$ algebra for the gauge structure and a larger one for the fu…
We study the Batalin-Vilkovisky master equation for both open and closed string field theory with special attention to anomalies. Open string field theory is anomaly free once the minimal coupling to closed strings induced by loop amplitudes is considered. In closed string field theory the full-fledged master equation has to be solved order by order in perturbation theory. The existence of a solution implies the absence of anomaly. We briefly discuss the relation of the iterative process of solution to methods used in the first quantized formalism and comment on some possible non-perturbative …
We review the gauge invariant formulation of 2-dim. QCD. We show that the non-linear gauge invariant phase space is the coset $W_\infty/W_{+\infty}\times W_{-\infty}$ ,which is specified by the $N=\infty$ master-field of this model. The meson fields correspond to the local coordinates of the coset. We comment on the stringy collective coordinates of the solitons (baryons) in this model.
We study the power spectrum of super-Hubble fluctuations of an inflaton-like scalar field, the "system", coupled to another scalar field, the "environment" during de Sitter inflation. We obtain the reduced density matrix for the inflaton fluctuations by integrating out the environmental degrees of freedom. These are considered to be massless and conformally coupled to gravity as a \emph{proxy} to describe degrees of freedom that remain sub-Hubble all throughout inflation. The time evolution of the density matrix is described by a quantum master equation, which describes the decay of the vacuum…
We review the homotopy algebraic perspective on perturbative quantum field theory: classical field theories correspond to homotopy algebras such as $A_\infty$- and $L_\infty$-algebras. Furthermore, their scattering amplitudes are encoded in minimal models of these homotopy algebras at tree level and their quantum relatives at loop level. The translation between Lagrangian field theories and homotopy algebras is provided by the Batalin--Vilkovisky formalism. The minimal models are computed recursively using the homological perturbation lemma, which induces useful recursion relations for the com…
The complete quantum theory of covariant closed strings is constructed in detail. The action is defined by elementary vertices satisfying recursion relations that give rise to Jacobi-like identities for an infinite chain of string field products. The genus zero string field algebra is the homotopy Lie algebra $L_\infty$, and the higher genus algebraic structure implies the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) master equation. From these structures on the off-shell state space, we show how to derive the $L_\infty$ algebra, and the BV equation on physical states, recently constructed in d=2 string theory. Th…
We prove non-perturbative bounds on the time evolution of the probability distribution of operator size in the $q$-local Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with $N$ fermions, for any even integer $q>2$ and any positive even integer $N>2q$. If the couplings in the Hamiltonian are independent and identically distributed Rademacher random variables, the infinite temperature many-body Lyapunov exponent is almost surely finite as $N\rightarrow\infty$. In the limit $q \rightarrow \infty$, $N\rightarrow \infty$, $q^{6+δ}/N \rightarrow 0$, the shape of the size distribution of a growing fermion, obtained by lead…
In the framework of perturbative quantum field theory a new, universal renormalization condition (called Master Ward Identity) was recently proposed by one of us (M.D.) in a joint paper with F.-M. Boas. The main aim of the present paper is to get a better understanding of the Master Ward Identity by analyzing its meaning in classical field theory. It turns out that it is the most general identity for classical local fields which follows from the field equations. It is equivalent to a generalization of the Schwinger-Dyson Equation and is closely related to the Quantum Action Principle of Lowens…
We study a new generating functional of one-particle irreducible diagrams in quantum field theory, called master functional, which is invariant under the most general perturbative changes of field variables. The usual functional Gamma does not behave as a scalar under the transformation law inherited from its very definition as the Legendre transform of W = ln Z, although it does behave as a scalar under an unusual transformation law. The master functional, on the other hand, is the Legendre transform of an improved functional W with respect to the sources coupled to both elementary and compos…
We study decoherence in a simple quantum mechanical model using two approaches. Firstly, we follow the conventional approach to decoherence where one is interested in solving the reduced density matrix from the perturbative master equation. Secondly, we consider our novel correlator approach to decoherence where entropy is generated by neglecting observationally inaccessible correlators. We show that both methods can accurately predict decoherence time scales. However, the perturbative master equation generically suffers from instabilities which prevents us to reliably calculate the system's t…
We identify a property of renormalizable SU(N)/U(1) gauge theories, the intrinsic Conformality ($iCF$), which underlies the scale invariance of physical observables and leads to a remarkably efficient method to solve the conventional renormalization scale ambiguity at every order in pQCD: the PMC$_\infty$. This new method reflects the underlying conformal properties displayed by pQCD at NNLO, eliminates the scheme dependence of pQCD predictions and is consistent with the general properties of the PMC (Principle of Maximum Conformality). We introduce a new method to identify conformal and $β$-t…
We describe a globalization construction for the Rozansky-Witten model in the BV-BFV formalism for a source manifold with and without boundary in the classical and quantum case. After having introduced the necessary background, we define an AKSZ sigma model, which, upon globalization through notions of formal geometry extended appropriately to our case, is shown to reduce to the Rozansky-Witten model. The relations with other relevant constructions in the literature are discussed. Moreover, we split the model as a $BF$-like theory and we construct a perturbative quantization of the model in th…
Using the Pauli-Villars regularization, we make a perturbative analysis of the quantum master equation (QME), $Σ=0$, for the Wilsonian effective action. It is found that the QME for the UV action determines whether exact gauge symmetry is realized along the renormalization group (RG) flow. The basic task of solving the QME can be reduced to compute the Troost-van Niuwenhuizen-Van Proyen jacobian factor for the classical UV action. When the QME cannot be satisfied, the non-vanishing $Σ$ is proportional to a BRS anomaly, which is shown to be preserved along the RG flow. To see how the UV action …
We revisit the problem of perturbations of Schwarzschild-AdS$_4$ black holes by using a combination of the Martel-Poisson formalism for perturbations of four-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetimes and the Kodama-Ishibashi formalism. We clarify the relationship between both formalisms and express the Brown-York-Balasubramanian-Krauss boundary stress-energy tensor, $\bar{T}_{μν}$, on a finite-$r$ surface purely in terms of the even and odd master functions. Then, on these surfaces we find that the spacelike components of the conservation equation $\bar{\mathcal{D}}^μ\bar{T}_{μν} =0$ are eq…
In the framework of perturbative quantum field theory (QFT) we propose a new, universal (re)normalization condition (called 'master Ward identity') which expresses the symmetries of the underlying classical theory. It implies for example the field equations, energy-momentum, charge- and ghost-number conservation, renormalized equal-time commutation relations and BRST-symmetry. It seems that the master Ward identity can nearly always be satisfied, the only exceptions we know are the usual anomalies. We prove the compatibility of the master Ward identity with the other (re)normalization conditio…
We construct a gauge invariant action for the Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond sectors of open superstring field theory realizing a cyclic $A_\infty$ structure, providing the first complete and fully explicit solution to the classical Batalin-Vilkovisky master equation in superstring field theory. We also demonstrate the equivalence of our action to the Wess-Zumino-Witten-based construction of Kunitomo and one of the authors.
The integral $\int_{-\infty}^{\infty} e^{- x^2 - g x^4} dx $ is used as an introductory learning tool in the study of Quantum Field Theory and path integrals. Typically it is analysed via perturbation theory. Close form solutions have been quoted but it is not clear how they were derived. So I set about deriving the close form solution on my own and using the same methodology obtain closed form expressions for the even positive integer moments.
Polyakov's spin factor enters as a weight in the path-integral description of particle-like modes propagating in Euclidean space-times, accounting for particle spin. The Fock-Feynman-Schwinger path integral applied to QCD accomodates Polyakov's spin factor in a natural manner while, at the same time, it identifies Wilson line (loop) operators as sole agents of interaction dynamics among matter and gauge field quanta. A direct application of such a separation between spin content and dynamics is the emergence of master expressions for the perturbative series involving either open or closed ferm…
I characterize the structure of the master field for $F^{0}_{z \bar z}$ in $SU(\infty)$-$YM_4$ on a product of two Riemann surfaces $Z \times W$ in the gauge $F^{ch}_{z \bar z}=0$ as the sum of a `bulk' constant term and of delta-like `contact' terms.\\ The contact terms may occur because the localization of the functional integral at $N=\infty$ on a master orbit of a constant connection under the action of singular gauge transformations is still compatible with the large-$N$ factorization and translational invariance.\\ In addition I argue that if the gauge group is unbroken and there is a ma…
In this Letter we consider the perturbative quantum gravity on the super-manifold which remains invariant under absolutely anticommuting BRST and anti-BRST transformations. In addition to that the theory posses one more symmetry known as shift symmetry. The BRST invariant Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) action for perturbative quantum gravity is realized as a translation in Grassmann coordinate. Further we show that the quantum master equation of the BV quantization method at one-loop order can be translated to have a superfield structure for the action. However, the BRST as well as anti-BRST invarian…
The motion of a small compact object (SCO) in a background spacetime is investigated further in a class of model nonlinear scalar field theories having a perturbative structure analogous to the General Relativistic description of extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs). We derive regular expressions for the scalar perturbations generated by the SCO's motion valid through third order in $ε$, the size of the SCO to the background curvature length scale. Our expressions are compared to those calculated through second order in $ε$ by Rosenthal in [E. Rosenthal, CQG 22, S859 (2005)] and found to agree…
Commutative Yang-Mills theories in 1+1 dimensions exhibit an interesting interplay between geometrical properties and U(N) gauge structures: in the exact expression of a Wilson loop with $n$ windings a non trivial scaling intertwines $n$ and $N$. In the non-commutative case the interplay becomes tighter owing to the merging of space-time and ``internal'' symmetries in a larger gauge group $U(\infty)$. We perform an explicit perturbative calculation of such a loop up to ${\cal O}(g^6)$; rather surprisingly, we find that in the contribution from the crossed graphs (the genuine non-commutative te…
In this work we present an algebraic approach to the dynamics and perturbation theory at tree-level for gauge theories coupled to matter. The field theories we will consider are: Chern-Simons-Matter, Quantum Chromodynamics, and scalar Quantum Chromodynamics. Starting with the construction of the master action in the classical Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism, we will extract the $L_{\infty}$-algebra that allow us to recursively calculate the perturbiner expansion from its minimal model. The Maurer-Cartan action obtained in this procedure will then motivate a generating function for all the tree-le…
We review some aspects of the non-perturbative formulation of 2-dim. string theory in terms of non-relativistic fermions. We derive the bosonization using $W_\infty$ coherent states in the path-integral formulation. We discuss the classical limit and indicate the precise nature of the truncation of the full theory that leads to collective field theory. As applications we briefly discuss classical solutions reponsible for stringy non-perturbative effects and the 2-dim. black-hole.
The perturbative prepotential and the Kähler metric of the vector multiplets of the N=2 effective low-energy heterotic strings is calculated directly in N=1 six-dimensional toroidal compactifications of the heterotic string vacua. This method provides the solution for the one loop correction to the N=2 vector multiplet prepotential for compactifications of the heterotic string for any rank three and four models, as well for compactifications on $K_3 \times T^2$. In addition, we complete previous calculations, derived from string amplitudes, by deriving the differential equation for the third d…
Master equations are commonly employed in cosmology to model the effect of additional degrees of freedom, treated as an "environment", onto a given "system". However, they rely on assumptions that are not necessarily satisfied in cosmology, where the environment may be out of equilibrium and the background is dynamical. In this work, we apply the master-equation program to a model that is exactly solvable, and which consists of two linearly coupled scalar fields evolving on a cosmological background. The light field plays the role of the system and the heavy field is the environment. By compar…
We present a new perturbative formulation of non-equilibrium thermal field theory, based upon non-homogeneous free propagators and time-dependent vertices. The resulting time-dependent diagrammatic perturbation series are free of pinch singularities without the need for quasi-particle approximation or effective resummation of finite widths. After arriving at a physically meaningful definition of particle number densities, we derive master time evolution equations for statistical distribution functions, which are valid to all orders in perturbation theory and to all orders in a gradient expansi…
We show that in four or more spacetime dimensions, the Einstein equations for gravitational perturbations of maximally symmetric vacuum black holes can be reduced to a single 2nd-order wave equation in a two-dimensional static spacetime for a gauge-invariant master variable, irrespective of the mode of perturbations. Our formulation applies to the case of vanishing as well as non-vanishing cosmological constant Lambda. The sign of the sectional curvature K of each spatial section of equipotential surfaces is also kept general. In the four-dimensional Schwarzschild background, this master equat…
We compute the quasinormal frequencies of $d$-dimensional spherically symmetric black holes with leading string $α'$ corrections for tensorial gravitational perturbations in the highly damped regime. We solve perturbatively the master differential equation and we compute the monodromies of the master perturbation variable (analytically continued to the complex plane) in different contours, in order to obtain the quasinormal mode spectra. We proceed analogously for the quasinormal modes of test scalar fields. Differently than in Einstein gravity, we obtain distinct results for the two cases.
We discuss an application of the known in QCD large $N$ expansion to strings and supermembranes in the strong coupling. In particular we use the recently obtained master field describing $ SU(\infty)$ gauge theory to argue that quantum extreme black holes obey quantum Boltzmann (infinite) statistics. This supports a topological argument by Strominger that black holes obey infinite statistics. We also speculate on a formulation of $X$-theory of strings and p-branes as theory of Grothendieck's motives. The partition function is expressed in terms of $L$-function of a motive. The Beilinson conjec…

In this paper, we revisit a number of issues in Vasiliev's theory related to gauge functions, ordering schemes, and the embedding of Fronsdal fields into master fields. First, we parametrize a broad equivalence class of linearized solutions using gauge functions and integration constants, and show explicitly how Fronsdal fields and their Weyl tensors arise from these data in accordance with Vasiliev's central on mass shell theorem. We then gauge transform the linearized piece of exact solutions, obtained in a convenient gauge in Weyl order, to the aforementioned class, where we land in normal …
We present a method to solve the master equation for the Wilsonian action in the antifield formalism. This is based on a representation theory for cutoff dependent global symmetries along the Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) flow. For the chiral symmetry, the master equation for the free theory yields a continuum version of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. We construct chiral invariant operators describing fermionic self-interactions. The use of canonically transformed variables is shown to simplify the underlying algebraic structure of the symmetry. We also give another non-trivial example, …
