We study numerically the ordering kinetics in a two-dimensional Ising model with random coupling where the fraction of antiferromagnetic links $a$ can be gradually tuned. We show that, upon increasing such fraction, the behavior changes in a radical way. Small $a$ does not prevent the system from a complete ordering, but this occurs in an extremely (logarithmically) slow manner. However, larger values of this parameter destroy complete ordering, due to frustration, and the evolution is comparatively faster (algebraic). Our study shows a precise correspondence between the kind of developing order, ferromagnetic versus frustrated, and the speed of evolution. The aging properties of the system are studied by focusing on the scaling properties of two-time quantities, the autocorrelation and linear response functions. We find that the contribution of equilibrium and an aging part to these functions occurs differently in the various regions of the phase diagram of the model. When quenching inside the ferromagnetic phase, the two-time quantities are obtained by the addition of these parts. Instead, in the paramagnetic phase, these two contributions enter multiplicatively. Both of the scaling forms are shown with excellent accuracy, and the corresponding scaling functions and exponents have been determined and discussed.
The current understanding of aging phenomena is mainly confined to the study of systems with short-ranged interactions. Little is known about the aging of long-ranged systems. Here, the aging in the phase-ordering kinetics of the two-dimensional Ising model with power-law long-range interactions is studied via Monte Carlo simulations. The dynamical scaling of the two-time spin-spin autocorrelator is well described by simple aging for all interaction ranges studied. The autocorrelation exponents are consistent with $λ=1.25$ in the effectively short-range regime, while for stronger long-range in…
Granular materials jam when developing a network of contact forces able to resist the applied stresses. Through numerical simulations of the dynamics of the jamming process, we show that the jamming transition does not occur when the kinetic energy vanishes. Rather, as the system jams, the kinetic energy becomes dominated by rattlers particles, that scatter withing their cages. The relaxation of the kinetic energy in the jammed configuration exhibits a double power-law decay, which we interpret in terms of the interplay between backbone and rattlers particles.
Aging in a two dimensional suspension containing rods was studied by means of kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. An off-lattice model with continuous positional and orientational degrees of freedom was considered. The initial state was produced using a random sequential adsorption model. During the aging, the rods underwent translational and rotational Brownian motions. The simulations were run at different values of number density (the number of rods per unit area), $ρ$, and of the initial orientation order parameter, $S_i$. The rods were assumed to have core---shell structures. The evolutions …
We study numerically the two-dimensional Ising model with non-conserved dynamics quenched from an initial equilibrium state at the temperature $T_i\ge T_c$ to a final temperature $T_f$ below the critical one. By considering processes initiating both from a disordered state at infinite temperature $T_i=\infty$ and from the critical configurations at $T_i=T_c$ and spanning the range of final temperatures $T_f\in [0,T_c[$ we elucidate the role played by $T_i$ and $T_f$ on the aging properties and, in particular, on the behavior of the autocorrelation $C$ and of the integrated response function $χ…
We study far-from-equilibrium dynamics in models of freely cooling granular gas and ballistically aggregating compact clusters. For both the cases, from event driven molecular dynamics simulations we have presented detailed results on structure and dynamics in space dimensions $d=1$ and $2$. Via appropriate analyses it has been confirmed that the ballistic aggregation mechanism applies in $d=1$ granular gases as well. Aging phenomena for this mechanism, in both the dimensions, have been studied via the two-time density autocorrelation function. This quantity is demonstrated to exhibit scaling …
Following quenches of initial configurations having long range spatial correlations, prepared at the demixing critical point, to points inside the miscibility gap, we study aging phenomena in solid binary mixtures. Results on the decay of the two-time order-parameter autocorrelation functions, obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional Ising model, with Kawasaki exchange kinetics, are analyzed via state-of-the art methods. The outcome is compared with that obtained for the ordering in uniaxial ferromagnets. For the latter, we have performed Monte Carlo simulations of the same…
The complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with additive noise is a stochastic partial differential equation that describes a remarkably wide range of physical systems which include coupled non-linear oscillators subject to external noise near a Hopf bifurcation instability and spontaneous structure formation in non-equilibrium systems, e.g., in cyclically competing populations or oscillatory chemical reactions. We employ a finite-difference method to numerically solve the noisy complex Ginzburg-Landau equation on a two-dimensional domain with the goal to investigate its non-equilibrium dynamics whe…
We present comparative results from simulations of a lattice and an off-lattice model of a homopolymer, in the context of kinetics of the collapse transition. Scaling laws related to the collapse time, cluster coarsening and aging behavior are compared. Although in both models the cluster growth is independent of temperature, the related exponents turn out to be different. Conversely, the aging and associated scaling properties are found to be universal, with the nonequilibrium autocorrelation exponent obeying a recently derived bound.
We employ Monte Carlo simulations to study the relaxation properties of the two-dimensional Coulomb glass in disordered semiconductors and the three-dimensional Bose glass in type-II superconductors in the presence of extended linear defects. We investigate the effects of adding non-zero random on-site energies from different distributions on the properties of the correlation-induced Coulomb gap in the density of states (DOS) and on the non-equilibrium aging kinetics highlighted by the density autocorrelation functions. We also probe the sensitivity of the system's equilibrium and non-equilibr…
We utilize Langevin molecular dynamics simulations to study dynamical critical behavior of magnetic flux lines near the depinning transition in type-II superconductors subject to randomly distributed attractive point defects. We employ a coarse-grained elastic line Hamiltonian for the mutually repulsive vortices and purely relaxational kinetics. In order to infer the stationary-state critical exponents for the continuous non-equilibrium depinning transition at zero temperature T = 0 and at the critical driving current density j_c, we explore two-parameter scaling laws for the flux lines' gyrat…
We study phase ordering dynamics in the three-dimensional nearest-neighbor Ising model, following rapid quenches from infinite to zero temperature. Results on various aspects, viz., domain growth, persistence, aging and pattern, have been obtained via the Glauber Monte Carlo simulations of the model on simple cubic lattice. These are analyzed via state-of-the-art methods, including the finite-size scaling, and compared with those for quenches to a temperature above the roughening transition. Each of these properties exhibit remarkably different behavior at the above mentioned final temperature…
Mixtures of glass-forming fluids sometimes exhibit glass-glass phase separation at low temperatures. Here, we use a molecular dynamics simulation to study one of the simplest examples of the glass-glass phase separation. We consider a mixture composed of type A and B particles, in which the A-A and B-B interactions are the identical Lennard-Jones interactions and the A-B interaction is repulsive only. To avoid crystallization, we also introduce the polydispersity in the particle sizes for each component. We study the phase separation kinetics of this model at a 50:50 concentration at various t…
We consider a gauge theory of the glass transition in the frustrated XY model being simplest model containing topologically nontrivial excitations. We describe the transition kinetics and find that the three-dimensional system exhibits the Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman criticality heralding its freezing into a spin glass. We analytically show that the system demonstrates all glass transition properties, like the logarithmic relaxation, and corresponding behavior of linear and non-linear susceptibility. The mode-coupling theory equation in the Zwanziger-Mori representation also is derived in framework o…
