We present the general conditions to realize a fourth order exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD) in two uniform (i.e., invariant along z) lossless and gainless coupled transmission lines (CTLs), namely, a degenerate band edge (DBE). Until now the DBE has been shown only in periodic structures. In contrast, the CTLs considered here are uniform and subdivided into four cases where the two TLs support combinations of forward propagation, backward propagation and evanescent modes (when neglecting the mutual coupling). We demonstrate for the first time that a DBE is supported in uniform CTLs when there is proper coupling between: (i) propagating modes and evanescent modes, (ii) forward and backward propagating modes, or (iii) four evanescent modes (two in each direction). We also show that the loaded quality factor of uniform CTLs exhibiting a fourth order EPD at k=0 is robust to series losses due to the fact that the degenerate modes do not advance in phase. We also provide a microstrip possible implementation of a uniform CTL exhibiting a DBE using periodic series capacitors with very sub-wavelength unit-cell length. Finally, we show an experimental verification of the existence DBE for a microstrip implementation of a CTL supporting coupled propagating and evanescent modes.
We reveal that the phenomenon of full transmission without phase accumulation commonly associated with epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials for a plane-wave does not require vanishing of permittivity. We theoretically connect the phenomenon with condition of the Brewster effect satisfied at the edges of stop bands (so called exceptional points of degeneracy) and show that the full transmission without phase accumulation can be observed in various one-dimensional periodic structures. Particularly, exploiting the manifold of exceptional points of degeneracy in one-dimensional all-dielectric periodi…
Abstract An exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD) is induced in a system made of an electron beam interacting with an electromagnetic (EM) guided mode. This enables a degenerate synchronous regime in backward wave oscillators (BWOs) where the electron beams provides distributed gain to the EM mode with distributed power extraction. Current particle-in-cell simulation results demonstrate that BWOs operating at an EPD have a starting-oscillation current that scales quadratically to a non-vanishing value for long interaction lengths and therefore have higher power conversion efficiency at arbitra…
We present the experimental demonstration of the occurrence of exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs) in a single resonator by introducing a linear time-periodic variation of one of its components, in contrast to EPDs in parity time (PT)-symmetric systems that require two coupled resonators with precise values of gain and loss. In the proposed scheme, only the tuning of the modulation frequency is required that is easily achieved in electronic systems. The EPD is a point in a system parameters' space at which two or more eigenstates coalesce, and this leads to unique properties not occurring …
We demonstrate how exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs) are induced in a single transmission line (TL) directly by applying periodic space-time modulation to the per-unit-length distributed capacitance. In such space-time modulated (STM)-TL, two eigenmodes coalesce into a single degenerate one, in their eigenvalues (wavenumbers) and eigenvectors (voltage-current states) when the system approaches the EPD condition. The EPD condition is achieved by tuning a parameter in the space-time modulation, such as spatial or temporal modulation frequency, or the modulation depth. We unequivocally demo…
We propose a scheme for obtaining highly-sensitive oscillators in a coupled-resonator system with an exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD) and a small instability. The oscillator with the exceptional degeneracy is realized by using two coupled resonators with an almost balanced small-signal gain and loss, that saturates due to nonlinear effects of the active component, resulting in an oscillation frequency that is very sensitive to a perturbation of the circuit. Two cases are investigated, with two parallel LC resonators with balanced small-signal gain and loss that are either coupled wireless…
We introduce a circuit topology based on a simple triple-ladder circuit realized with lumped reactive components that provides a sixth order degenerate band-edge (6DBE). The 6DBE is a special kind of sixth-order exceptional point of degeneracy in a lossless and gainless periodic ladder. This degeneracy provides a very flat band edge in the phase-frequency dispersion diagram. The proposed topology exhibits unique structured resonance features associated with a high loaded Q-factor. We investigate the Floquet-Bloch modes in an infinite-length periodic triple-ladder and their dispersion relation …
We present a general theory of exceptional points of degeneracy (EPD) in periodically time-variant systems that do not necessarily require the presence of loss or gain, and we show that even a single resonator with a time-periodic component may develop EPDs. An EPD is a special point in a system parameter space at which two or more eigenmodes coalesce in both their eigenvalues and eigenvectors into a single degenerate eigenmode. We demonstrate the conditions for EPDs to exist in time-periodic systems that are either lossless/gainless or with loss and/or gain and we show that a system with zero…
We exploit the premises of exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs) induced in linear time-periodic (LTP) systems to achieve extremely sensitive biosensors. The EPD is formed in a single LC resonator where the total capacitance is comprised of a time-varying capacitor in parallel to a biosensing capacitor. We use the time-periodic variation of a system parameter (e.g., capacitance) to achieve a second order EPD aiming at improving the sensitivity of liquid based radio frequency biosensors, leading to an intrinsic ultra sensitivity. We show the emergence of EPDs in such a system and the ultra se…
We show how an exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD) is formed in a system composed of an electron beam interacting with an electromagnetic mode guided in a slow wave structure (SWS) with distributed power extraction from the interaction zone. Based on this kind of EPD, a new regime of operation is devised for backward wave oscillators (BWOs) as a synchronous and degenerate regime between a backward electromagnetic mode and the charge wave modulating the electron beam. Degenerate synchronization under this EPD condition means that two complex modes of the interactive system do not share just t…
We demonstrate several new aspects of exceptional points of degeneracy (EPD) pertaining to propagation in two uniform coupled transmission-line structures. We describe an EPD using two different approaches - by solving an eigenvalue problem based on the system matrix, and as a singular point from bifurcation theory, and the link between these two disparate viewpoints. Cast as an eigenvalue problem, we show that eigenvalue degeneracies are always coincident with eigenvector degeneracies, so that all eigenvalue degeneracies are implicitly EPDs in two uniform coupled transmission lines. Furthermo…
We present a novel paradigm for dispersion engineering in coupled transmission lines (CTLs) based on exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs). We develop a theory for fourth-order EPDs consisting of four Floquet-Bloch eigenmodes coalescing into one degenerate eigenmode. We present unique wave propagation properties associated to the EPD and develop a figure of merit to assess the practical occurrence of fourth-order EPDs in CTLs with tolerances and losses. We experimentally verify for the first time the existence of a fourth EPD (the degenerate band edge), through dispersion and transmission me…
We demonstrate that exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs) are obtained in two coupled waveguides without resorting to gain and loss. We show the general concept that modes resulting from a proper coupling of forward and backward waves exhibit EPDs of order two and that there the group velocity vanishes. We verify our insight by using coupled mode theory and also by fullwave numerical simulations of light in a dielectric slab coupled to a grating, when one supports a forward wave whereas the other (the grating) supports a backward wave. We also demonstrate how to realize photonic indirect ban…
The dispersion of a three-way waveguide is engineered to exhibit exceptional modal characteristics. Two coupled waveguides with Parity-Time (PT) symmetry have been previously demonstrated to exhibit second order exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs). In this work, we introduce and investigate a particular class of EPDs, applicable from radio frequency to optical wavelengths, whereby three coupled waveguides satisfy Glide-Time (GT) symmetry to exhibit a third order modal degeneracy with a real-valued wavenumber. GT symmetry involves glide symmetry of lossless/gainless components of the wavegu…
We demonstrate that a periodic waveguide comprising of uniform lossless segments together with discrete gain and radiating elements supports exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs). We provide analytical expressions for all possible conditions that guarantee the occurrence of an EPD, i.e., the coalescence of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. We show that EPDs are not only achieved using symmetric gain and radiation periodic loading, but they are also obtained using asymmetric gain and radiation loss conditions. We illustrate the characteristics of the degenerate electromagnetic modes, showing the …
The concept of exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD) is used to conceive a degenerate synchronization regime that is able to enhance the level of output power and power conversion efficiency for backward wave oscillators (BWOs) operating at millimeter-wave and Terahertz frequencies. Standard BWOs operating at such high frequency ranges typically generate output power not exceeding tens of watts with very poor power conversion efficiency in the order of 1%. The novel concept of degenerate synchronization for the BWO based on a folded waveguide is implemented by engineering distributed gain and …
We propose an optomechanical design, consisting of a parity-time symmetric multilayer structure tuned at exceptional-point degeneracy (EPD), with an adjustable layer that is coupled to micromechanical springs. The deflections of this layer in response to accelerations $α$, lead to square-root resonance detuning $Δω\equivω-ω_{EPD}\propto \sqrtα$ - thus dramatically enhancing the probe of ultra-small accelerations $α\ll1$. Our design is scalable and can, in principle, support higher $N$ order EPDs with sensitivity $Δω\propto\sqrt[n]α$. It also provides a pathway towards a new generation of on-ch…
We demonstrate that a circuit comprising two unstable LC resonators coupled via a gyrator supports an exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD) with purely real eigenfrequency. Each of the two resonators includes either a capacitor or an inductor with a negative value, showing purely imaginary resonance frequency when not coupled to the other via the gyrator. With external perturbation imposed on the system, we show analytically that the resonance frequency response of the circuit follows the square-root dependence on perturbation, leading to possible sensor applications. Furthermore, the effect o…
A laser exhibits both controllable gain and loss and, under proper design conditions, is an ideal non-Hermitian system allowing the direct observation and engineering of spectral singularities such as exceptional points (EPs). A dual section distributed feedback (DFB) quantum cascade laser (QCL) is a prototype of such a system, allowing the controlled coupling of a ladder of cavity Fabry-Perot (FP) modes to a quarter wave shifted DFB mode. Tuning the coupling strength and the gain difference between these two set of modes enables probing the regimes from weak coupling to strong coupling and th…

We present the observation of diabolic points in Hermitian and non-Hermitian electronics dimers. The condition of unbreakable Parity-time symmetry is established for both PT-symmetric ZRC and RLC dimers. We show how appears non-Hermitian degeneracy points in the spectrum and how they are protected against a Hermitian perturbation. When a non- Hermitian perturbation is added in the setup, the non-Hermitian diabolic point (NHDP) turns into a ring of exceptional points as in some Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Some experimental simulations of oscillations around these particular points in LTspice are…
Hexagonal warping (HW) in three-dimensional topological insulators is, by now, well-known. We show that non-Hermitian (NH) loss/gain can generate an exceptional HW effect in double Weyl-semimetals (DWSM). This unique feature of DWSMs has distinctive effects on Fermi surface topology. Importantly, in the presence of such a $k^3$ spin orbit coupling mimicking term, the symmetry associated with the DWSMs is changed, leading to four exceptional points, among which two are degenerate. Introducing a driving field removes this degeneracy. The combined action of the NH warping and driving parameters l…
A large class of phononic crystals and mechanical metamaterials exhibit glide symmetry that dictates their functionality or exceptional performance. The glide symmetry gives rise to a number of intriguing phenomena like sticking-bands and degeneracy in the phononic band structures. Fully understanding of these phenomena demands analysis of the phonon modes' symmetry property, which is, however, a challenging task since it involves nonsymmorphic space group analysis and special treatment to the Brillouin zone boundary. Therefore, this work introduces a systematic group-theoretical procedure det…
Unconventional Weyl points with topological charges higher than 1 can transform into various complex unconventional Weyl exceptional contours under non-Hermitian perturbations. However, theoretical studies of these exceptional contours have been limited to tight-binding models. Here, we propose to realize unconventional Weyl exceptional contours in photonic continua -- non-Hermitian anisotropic chiral plasma, based on ab initio calculation by Maxwell's equations. By perturbing in-plane permittivity, an unconventional Weyl point can transform into a quadratic Weyl exceptional circle, a Type-I W…
The past few years have witnessed growing interests in exceptional points (EPs) in various domains, including photonics, acoustics and electronics. However, EPs have mainly been realized based on the degeneracy of resonances of physical systems; distinct degeneracies occur relating to the absorption properties of waves, with distinct physical manifestations. Here we demonstrate this physically different kind of exceptional point, by engineering degeneracies in the absorption spectrum of optical microcavities with dissipation. We experimentally distinguish the conditions to realize a resonant E…
