We study the Hardy space of translated Dirichlet series $\mathcal{H}_{+}$. It consists on those Dirichlet series $\sum a_n n^{-s}$ such that for some (equivalently, every) $1 \leq p < \infty$, the translation $\sum{a_{n}}n^{-(s+\frac{1}σ)}$ belongs to the Hardy space $\mathcal{H}^{p}$ for every $σ>0$. We prove that this set, endowed with the topology induced by the seminorms $\left\{\Vert\cdot\Vert_{2,k}\right\}_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ (where $\Vert\sum{a_{n}n^{-s}}\Vert_{2,k}$ is defined as $\big\Vert\sum{a_n n^{-(s+\frac{1}{k})}} \big\Vert_{\mathcal{H}^{2}}$), is a Fréchet space which is Schwartz and non nuclear. Moreover, the Dirichlet monomials $\{n^{-s}\}_{n \in \mathbb N}$ are an unconditional Schauder basis of $\mathcal H_+$. In the spirit of Gordon and Hedenmalm's work, we completely characterize the composition operator on the Hardy space of translated Dirichlet series. Moreover, we study the superposition operators on $\mathcal{H}_{+}$ and show that every polynomial defines an operator of this kind. We present certain sufficient conditions on the coefficients of an entire function to define a superposition operator. Relying on number theory techniques we exhibit some examples which do not provide superposition operators. We finally look at the action of the differentiation and integration operators on these spaces.
We revisit Hardy's inequality in the scope of regular Dirichlet forms following an analytical method. We shall give an alternative necessary and sufficient condition for the occurrence of Hardy's inequality. A special emphasis will be given for the case where the Dirichlet form under consideration is strongly local, extending therefore some known results in the Euclidean case.
A new and simple proof of the embedding of the Hardy--Hilbert space of Dirichlet series into a conformally invariant Hardy space of the half-plane is presented, and the optimal constant of the embedding is computed.
Hartman proved in 1939 that the width of the largest possible strip in the complex plane, on which a Dirichlet series $\sum_n a_n n^{-s}$ is uniformly a.s.-sign convergent (i.e., $\sum_n \varepsilon_n a_n n^{-s}$ converges uniformly for almost all sequences of signs $\varepsilon_n =\pm 1$) but does not convergent absolutely, equals $1/2$. We study this result from a more modern point of view within the framework of so called Hardy-type Dirichlet series with values in a Banach space.
Given a frequency $λ$, we study general Dirichlet series $\sum a_n e^{-λ_n s}$. First, we give a new condition on $λ$ which ensures that a somewhere convergent Dirichlet series defining a bounded holomorphic function in the right half-plane converges uniformly in this half-plane, improving classical results of Bohr and Landau. Then, following recent works of Defant and Schoolmann, we investigate Hardy spaces of these Dirichlet series. We get general results on almost sure convergence which have an harmonic analysis flavour. Nevertheless, we also exhibit examples showing that it seems hard to g…
The aim of this paper is to study when two composition operators on the Hilbert space of Dirichlet series with square summable coefficients belong to the same component or when their difference is compact. As a corollary we show that if a linear combination of composition operators with polynomial symbols of degree at most 2 is compact, then each composition operator is compact.
Given a frequency $λ=(λ_n)$, we study when almost all vertical limits of a $\mathcal{H}_1$-Dirichlet series $\sum a_n e^{-λ_ns}$ are Riesz-summable almost everywhere on the imaginary axis. Equivalently, this means to investigate almost everywhere convergence of Fourier series of $H_1$-functions on so-called $λ$-Dirichlet groups, and as our main technical tool we need to invent a weak-type $(1, \infty)$ Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator for such groups. Applications are given to $H_1$-functions on the infinite dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^\infty$, ordinary Dirichlet series $\sum a_n n^{-s}$, a…
The main purpose of this article is to survey on some key elements of a recent $\mathcal{H}_p$-theory of general Dirichlet series $\sum a_n e^{-λ_{n}s}$, which was mainly inspired by the work of Bayart and Helson on ordinary Dirichlet series $\sum a_n n^{-s}$. In view of an ingenious identification of Bohr, the $\mathcal{H}_p$-theory of ordinary Dirichlet series can be seen as a sub-theory of Fourier analysis on the infinite dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^\infty$. Extending these ideas, the $\mathcal{H}_p$-theory of $λ$-Dirichlet series is build as a sub-theory of Fourier analysis on what we ca…
By using the Schur test, we give some upper and lower estimates on the norm of a composition operator on $\mathcal{H}^2$, the space of Dirichlet series with square summable coefficients, for the inducing symbol $φ(s)=c_1+c_{q}q^{-s}$ where $q\geq 2$ is a fixed integer. We also give an estimate on the approximation numbers of such an operator.
In this paper, we investigate when weighted composition operators acting on Dirichlet spaces $\mathcal{D}(\mathbb{B}_{N})$ are complex symmetric with respect to some special conjugations, and provide some characterizations of Hermitian weighted composition operators on $\mathcal{D}(\mathbb{B}_{N})$. Furthermore, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for $J$-symmetric weighted composition operators on Hardy spaces $H^2(\mathbb{B}_{N})$ to be unitary or Hermitian, then some new examples of complex symmetric weighted composition operators on $H^2(\mathbb{B}_{N})$ are obtained. We also disc…
We obtain new results on Fourier multipliers for Dirichlet-Hardy spaces. As a consequence, we establish a Littlewood-Paley type inequality which yields a simple proof that the Dirichlet monomials form a Schauder basis for p>1.
In this paper, we completely characterize the order boundedness of weighted composition operators between different weighted Dirichlet spaces and different derivative Hardy spaces.
We consider continuous semigroups of analytic functions $\{Φ_t\}_{t\geq0}$ in the so-called Gordon-Hedenmalm class $\mathcal{G}$, that is, the family of analytic functions $Φ:\mathbb C_+\to \mathbb C_+$ giving rise to bounded composition operators in the Hardy space of Dirichlet series $\mathcal{H}^2$. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between continuous semigroups $\{Φ_{t}\}_{t\geq0}$ in the class $\mathcal G$ and strongly continuous semigroups of composition operators $\{T_t\}_{t\geq0}$, where $T_t(f)=f\circΦ_t$, $f\in\mathcal{H}^2$. We extend these results for the range $p\i…
We characterize the space of multipliers from the Hardy space of Dirichlet series $\mathcal H_p$ into $\mathcal H_q$ for every $1 \leq p,q \leq \infty$. For a fixed Dirichlet series, we also investigate some structural properties of its associated multiplication operator. In particular, we study the norm, the essential norm, and the spectrum for an operator of this kind. We exploit the existing natural identification of spaces of Dirichlet series with spaces of holomorphic functions in infinitely many variables and apply several methods from complex and harmonic analysis to obtain our results.…
This paper provides a complete characterization of quasicontractive $C_0$-semigroups on Hardy and Dirichlet space with a prescribed generator of the form $Af=Gf'$. We show that such semigroups are semigroups of composition operators and we give simple sufficient and necessary condition on $G$. Our techniques are based on ideas from semigroup theory, such as the use of numerical ranges.
For $0<p<\infty $, the Dirichlet-type space $\Dp$ consists of those analytic functions $f$ in the unit disc $\D$ such that $\int_\D|f'(z)|\sp p(1-|z|)^{p-1}\,dA(z)<\infty$. Motivated by operator theoretic differences between the Hardy space $H^p$ and $\Dp$, the integral operator {displaymath} T_g(f)(z)=\int_{0}^{z}f(ζ)\,g'(ζ)\,dζ,\quad z\in\D, {displaymath} acting from one of these spaces to another is studied. In particular, it is shown, on one hand, that $T_g:\Dp\to H^p$ is bounded if and only if $g\in\BMOA$ when $0<p\le 2$, and, on the other hand, that this equivalence is very far from bein…
A range of Hardy-like spaces of ordinary Dirichlet series, called the Dirichlet-Hardy spaces $\Hp^p$, $p \geq 1$, have been the focus of increasing interest among researchers following a paper of Hedenmalm, Lindqvist and Seip in Duke Math. J 86 (1997), 1-37. The Dirichlet series in these spaces converge on a certain half-plane, where one may also define the classical Hardy spaces $H^p$. In this paper, we compare the boundary behaviour of elements in $\Hp^p$ and $H^p$. Moreover, Carleson measures of the spaces $\Hp^p$ are studied. Our main result shows that for certain cases the following state…
We study Hardy spaces $H^p_ν$ of the conjugate Beltrami equation $\bar{\partial} f=ν\bar{\partial f}$ over Dini-smooth finitely connected domains, for real contractive $ν\in W^{1,r}$ with $r>2$, in the range $r/(r-1)<p<\infty$. We develop a theory of conjugate functions and apply it to solve Dirichlet and Neumann problems for the conductivity equation $\nabla.(σ\nabla u)=0$ where $σ=(1-ν)/(1+ν)$. In particular situations, we also consider some density properties of traces of solutions together with boundary approximation issues.
In this paper, we prove that for every compact set of the unit disk of logarithmic capacity 0, there exists a Schur function both in the disk algebra and in the Dirichlet space such that the associated composition operator is in all Schatten classes (of the Dirichlet space), and for which the set of points whose image touches the unit circle is equal to this compact set. We show that for every bounded composition operator on the Dirichlet space and for every point of the unit circle, the logarithmic capacity of the set of point having this point as image is 0. We show that every compact compos…
Given a Banach space $X$ and $1 \leq p \leq \infty$, it is well known that the two Hardy spaces $H_p(\mathbb{T},X)$ ($\mathbb{T}$ the torus) and $H_p(\mathbb{D},X)$ ($\mathbb{D}$ the disk) have to be distinguished carefully. This motivates us to define and study two different types of Hardy spaces $\mathcal{H}_p(X)$ and $\mathcal{H}^+_p(X)$ of Dirichlet series $\sum_n a_n n^{-s}$ with coefficients in $X$. We characterize them in terms of summing operators as well as holomorphic functions in infinitely many variables, and prove that they coincide whenever $X$ has the analytic Radon-Nikodým Prop…
A result of Helson on general Dirichlet series $\sum a_{n} e^{-λ_{n}s}$ states that, whenever $(a_{n})$ is $2$-summable and $λ=(λ_{n})$ satisfies a certain condition introduced by Bohr, then for almost all homomorphism $ω\colon (\mathbb{R},+) \to \mathbb{T}$ the Dirichlet series $\sum a_{n} ω(λ_{n})e^{-λ_{n}s}$ converges on the open right half plane $[Re>0]$. For ordinary Dirichlet series $\sum a_n n^{-s}$ Hedenmalm and Saksman related this result with the famous Carleson-Hunt theorem on pointwise convergence of Fourier series, and Bayart extended it within his theory of Hardy spaces $\mathcal…
The Bohr-Bohnenblust-Hille Theorem states that the width of the strip in the complex plane on which an ordinary Dirichlet series $\sum_n a_n n^{-s}$ converges uniformly but not absolutely is less than or equal to 1/2, and this estimate is optimal. Equivalently, the supremum of the absolute convergence abscissas of all Dirichlet series in the Hardy space $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ equals 1/2. By a surprising fact of Bayart the same result holds true if $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ is replaced by any Hardy space $\mathcal{H}_p$, $1 \le p < \infty$, of Dirichlet series. For Dirichlet series with coefficients i…
In this article, methods from sub-Hardy Hilbert spaces such as the de Branges-Rovnyak spaces and local Dirichlet spaces are used to investigate Báez-Duarte's Hilbert space reformulation of the Riemann hypothesis (RH).
The Hardy-Rellich inequality given here generalizes a Hardy inequality of Davies (1984), from the case of the Dirichlet Laplacian of a region $Ω\subseteq\real^N$ to that of the higher order polyharmonic operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The inequality yields some immediate spectral information for the polyharmonic operators and also bounds on the trace of the associated semigroups and resolvents.
A theorem of Henry Helson shows that for every ordinary Dirichlet series $\sum a_n n^{-s}$ with a square summable sequence $(a_n)$ of coefficients, almost all vertical limits $\sum a_n χ(n) n^{-s}$, where $χ: \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{T}$ is a completely multiplicative arithmetic function, converge on the right half-plane. We survey on recent improvements and extensions of this result within Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series -- relating it with some classical work of Bohr, Banach, Carleson-Hunt, Cesàro, Hardy-Littlewood, Hardy-Riesz, Menchoff-Rademacher, and Riemann.
We compute the spectra and the essential spectra of bounded linear fractional composition operators acting on the Hardy and weighted Bergman spaces of the upper half-plane. We are also able to extend the results to weighted Dirichlet spaces of the upper half-plane.
A bounded linear operator $T$ acting on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is said to be recurrent if for every non-empty open subset $U\subset \mathcal{H}$ there is an integer $n$ such that $T^n (U)\cap U\neq\emptyset$. In this paper, we completely characterize the recurrence of scalar multiples of composition operators, induced by linear fractional self maps of the unit disk, acting on weighted Dirichlet spaces $S_ν$; in particular on the Bergman space, the Hardy space, and the Dirichlet space. Consequently, we complete a previous work of Costakis et al. \cite{costakis} on recurrence of linear fr…
We present an abstract approach to the abscissas of convergence of vector-valued Dirichlet series. As a consequence we deduce that the abscissas for Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series are all equal. We also introduce and study weak versions of the abscissas for scalar-valued Dirichlet series.
We prove a Bernstein-type inequality involving the Bergman and the Hardy norms, for rational functions in the unit disc \mathbb{D} having at most n poles all outside of \frac{1}{r}\mathbb{D}, 0
We consider composition operators $\mathscr{C}_φ$ on the Hardy space of Dirichlet series $\mathscr{H}^2$, generated by Dirichlet series symbols $φ$. We prove two different subordination principles for such operators. One concerns affine symbols only, and is based on an arithmetical condition on the coefficients of $φ$. The other concerns general symbols, and is based on a geometrical condition on the boundary values of $φ$. Both principles are strict, in the sense that they characterize the composition operators of maximal norm generated by symbols having given mapping properties. In particula…
Let $γ_{-1}$ be the absolutely continuous measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$ whose density is the reciprocal of a Gaussian and consider the natural weighted Laplacian $\mathcal{A}$ on $L^2(γ_{-1})$. In this paper, we prove boundedness and unboundedness results for the purely imaginary powers and the first order Riesz transforms associated with the translated operators $\mathcal{A}+λI$, $λ\geq0$, from certain new Hardy-type spaces adapted to $γ_{-1}$ to $L^1(γ_{-1})$. We also investigate the weak type $(1,1)$ of these operators.
We present some open problems and describe briefly some possible research directions in the emerging theory of Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series and their intimate counterparts, Hardy spaces on the infinite-dimensional torus. Links to number theory are emphasized throughout the paper.
We study the boundary behavior of functions in the Hardy spaces HD^p for ordinary Dirichlet series. Our main result, answering a question of H. Hedenmalm, shows that the classical F. Carlson theorem on integral means does not extend to the imaginary axis for functions in HD^\infty, i.e., for ordinary Dirichlet series in H^\infty of the right half-plane. We discuss an important embedding problem for HD^p, the solution of which is only known when p is an even integer. Viewing HD^p as Hardy spaces of the infinite-dimensional polydisc, we also present analogues of Fatou's theorem.
We give a version of the Montel theorem for Hardy spaces of holomorphic functions on an infinite dimensional space. As a by-product, we provide a Montel-type theorem for the Hardy space of Dirichlet series. This approach also gives an elementary proof of Montel theorem for the classical one-variable Hardy spaces.
For a Dirichlet series symbol $g(s) = \sum_{n \geq 1} b_n n^{-s}$, the associated Volterra operator $\mathbf{T}_g$ acting on a Dirichlet series $f(s)=\sum_{n\ge 1} a_n n^{-s}$ is defined by the integral $f\mapsto -\int_{s}^{+\infty} f(w)g'(w)\,dw$. We show that $\mathbf{T}_g$ is a bounded operator on the Hardy space $\mathcal{H}^p$ of Dirichlet series with $0 < p < \infty$ if and only if the symbol $g$ satisfies a Carleson measure condition. When appropriately restricted to one complex variable, our condition coincides with the standard Carleson measure characterization of ${\operatorname{BMOA…
Let $n\ge2$ and $Ω$ be a bounded non-tangentially accessible domain (for short, NTA domain) of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Assume that $L_D$ is a second-order divergence form elliptic operator having real-valued, bounded, measurable coefficients on $L^2(Ω)$ with the Dirichlet boundary condition. The main aim of this article is threefold. First, the authors prove that the heat kernels $\{K_t^{L_D}\}_{t>0}$ generated by $L_D$ are Hölder continuous. Second, for any $p\in(0,1]$, the authors introduce the `geometrical' Hardy space $H^p_r(Ω)$ by restricting any element of the Hardy space $H^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to …
The $L^q$ norm of a Dirichlet polynomial $F(s)=\sum_{n=1}^{N} a_n n^{-s}$ is defined as \[\| F\|_q:=(\lim_{T\to\infty}\frac{1}{T}\int_{0}^T |F(it)|^qdt)^{1/q}\] for $0<q<\infty$. It is shown that \[ (\sum_{n=1}^{N} |a_n|^2|μ(n)|[d(n)]^{\frac{\log q}{\log 2} -1})^{1/2}\le \| F\|_q \] when $0<q<2$; here $μ$ is the Möbius function and $d$ the divisor function. This result is used to prove that the $L^q$ norm of $D_N(s):=\sum_{n=1}^{N} n^{-1/2-s}$ satisfies $\|D_N\|_q\gg (\log N)^{q/4}$ for $0<q<\infty$. By Helson's generalization of the M. Riesz theorem on the conjugation operator, the reverse in…
Let $Ω$ be either $\mathbb{R}^n$ or a strongly Lipschitz domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, and $ω\in A_{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ (the class of Muckenhoupt weights). Let $L$ be a second order divergence form elliptic operator on $L^2 (Ω)$ with the Dirichlet or Neumann boundary condition, and assume that the heat semigroup generated by $L$ has the Gaussian property $(G_1)$ with the regularity of their kernels measured by $μ\in(0,1]$. Let $Φ$ be a continuous, strictly increasing, subadditive, positive and concave function on $(0,\infty)$ of critical lower type index $p_Φ^-\in(0,1]$. In this paper, the auth…
We investigate the compactness of composition operators on the Hardy space of Dirichlet series induced by a map $φ(s)=c_0s+φ_0(s)$, where $φ_0$ is a Dirichlet polynomial. Our results depend heavily on the characteristic $c_0$ of $φ$ and, when $c_0=0$, on both the degree of $φ_0$ and its local behaviour near a boundary point. We also study the approximation numbers for some of these operators. Our methods involve geometric estimates of Carleson measures and tools from differential geometry.
Inspired by the work of Hedenmalm, Lindqvist and Seip, we consider different properties of dilations systems of a fixed function $φ\in L^2(0,1)$. More precisely, we study when the system $\{φ(nx)\}_n$ is a Bessel sequence, a Riesz sequence, or it satisfies the lower frame bound. We are able to characterize these properties in terms of multipliers of the Hardy space $\mathcal{H}^2$ of Dirichtet series and, also, in terms of Hardy spaces on the infinite polytorus. We also address the multivariate case.
We give analytic description for the completion of $C_0^\infty ( \mathbf{R}_+)$ in Dirichlet space $D^{1,p}(\mathbf{R}_+, ω):= \{ u:\mathbf{R}_+\rightarrow \mathbf{R}: u\ \hbox{ is locally absolutely continuous on} \ \mathbf{R}_+ \ {\rm and}\ \| u^{'}\|_{L^p(\mathbf{R}_+, ω)}<\infty \}$, for given continuous weight $ω$, in terms of the local $B_p$ conditions due to Kufner and Opic, where $1<p<\infty$. Moreover, we propose applications of our results to: analysis of Hardy inequalities, boundary value problems, complex interpolation theory, and to derivation of new Morrey type inequalities.
The Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series denoted by ${\cal H}^p$ ($p\ge1$) have been studied in [12] when p = 2 and in [3] for the general case. In this paper we study some Lp-generalizations of spaces of Dirichlet series, particularly two families of Bergman spaces denoted ${\cal A}^p$ and ${\cal B}^p$. We recover classical properties of spaces of analytic functions: boundedness of point evaluation, embeddings between these spaces and "Littlewood-Paley" formulas when p = 2. We also show that the ${\cal B}^p$ spaces have properties similar to the classical Bergman spaces of the unit disk while the…
Inspired by results of Bayart on ordinary Dirichlet series $\sum a_n n^{-s}$, the main purpose of this article is to start an $\mathcal{H}_p$-theory of general Dirichlet series $\sum a_n e^{-λ_{n}s}$. Whereas the $\mathcal{H}_p$-theory of ordinary Dirichlet series, in view of an ingenious identification of Bohr, can be seen as a sub-theory of Fourier analysis on the infinite dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^\infty$, the $\mathcal{H}_p$-theory of general Dirichlet series is build as a sub-theory of Fourier analysis on certain compact abelian groups, including the Bohr compactification $\overline{\…
We consider cyclic $m$-isometries on a complex separable Hilbert space. Such operators are characterized in terms of shifts on abstract spaces of weighted Dirichlet type. Our results resemble those of Agler and Stankus, but our model spaces are described in terms of Dirichlet integrals rather than analytic Dirichlet operators. The chosen point of view allows us to construct a variety of examples. An interesting feature among all of these is that the corresponding model spaces are contained in a certain subspace of the Hardy space $H^2$, depending only on the order of the corresponding operator…
