Existing monocular 3D object detection methods have been demonstrated on rectilinear perspective images and fail in images with alternative projections such as those acquired by fisheye cameras. Previous works on object detection in fisheye images have focused on 2D object detection, partly due to the lack of 3D datasets of such images. In this work, we show how to use existing monocular 3D object detection models, trained only on rectilinear images, to detect 3D objects in images from fisheye cameras, without using any fisheye training data. We outperform the only existing method for monocular 3D object detection in panoramas on a benchmark of synthetic data, despite the fact that the existing method trains on the target non-rectilinear projection whereas we train only on rectilinear images. We also experiment with an internal dataset of real fisheye images.
We present two new fisheye image datasets for training face and object detection models: VOC-360 and Wider-360. The fisheye images are created by post-processing regular images collected from two well-known datasets, VOC2012 and Wider Face, using a model for mapping regular to fisheye images implemented in Matlab. VOC-360 contains 39,575 fisheye images for object detection, segmentation, and classification. Wider-360 contains 63,897 fisheye images for face detection. These datasets will be useful for developing face and object detectors as well as segmentation modules for fisheye images while …

There has been much recent interest in deep learning methods for monocular image based object pose estimation. While object pose estimation is an important problem for autonomous robot interaction with the physical world, and the application space for monocular-based methods is expansive, there has been little work on applying these methods with fisheye imaging systems. Also, little exists in the way of annotated fisheye image datasets on which these methods can be developed and tested. The research landscape is even more sparse for object detection methods applied in the underwater domain, fi…

We design a fast car detection and tracking algorithm for traffic monitoring fisheye video mounted on crossroads. We use ICIP 2020 VIP Cup dataset and adopt YOLOv5 as the object detection base model. The nighttime video of this dataset is very challenging, and the detection accuracy (AP50) of the base model is about 54%. We design a reliable car detection and tracking algorithm based on the concept of bounding box propagation among frames, which provides 17.9 percentage points (pp) and 6.2 pp. accuracy improvement over the base model for the nighttime and daytime videos, respectively. To speed…

The ability to detect pedestrians and other moving objects is crucial for an autonomous vehicle. This must be done in real-time with minimum system overhead. This paper discusses the implementation of a surround view system to identify moving as well as static objects that are close to the ego vehicle. The algorithm works on 4 views captured by fisheye cameras which are merged into a single frame. The moving object detection and tracking solution uses minimal system overhead to isolate regions of interest (ROIs) containing moving objects. These ROIs are then analyzed using a deep neural networ…
Surround-view fisheye cameras are commonly used for near-field sensing in automated driving. Four fisheye cameras on four sides of the vehicle are sufficient to cover 360° around the vehicle capturing the entire near-field region. Some primary use cases are automated parking, traffic jam assist, and urban driving. There are limited datasets and very little work on near-field perception tasks as the focus in automotive perception is on far-field perception. In contrast to far-field, surround-view perception poses additional challenges due to high precision object detection requirements of 10cm …

Object detection is a comprehensively studied problem in autonomous driving. However, it has been relatively less explored in the case of fisheye cameras. The standard bounding box fails in fisheye cameras due to the strong radial distortion, particularly in the image's periphery. We explore better representations like oriented bounding box, ellipse, and generic polygon for object detection in fisheye images in this work. We use the IoU metric to compare these representations using accurate instance segmentation ground truth. We design a novel curved bounding box model that has optimal propert…

Modern object detectors take advantage of rectangular bounding boxes as a conventional way to represent objects. When it comes to fisheye images, rectangular boxes involve more background noise rather than semantic information. Although multi-point representation has been proposed, both the regression accuracy and convergence still perform inferior to the widely used rectangular boxes. In order to further exploit the advantages of multi-point representation for distorted images, Concentric Rectangles Regression Strategy(CRRS) is proposed in this work. We adopt smoother mean loss to allocate we…
Fast binary descriptors build the core for many vision based applications with real-time demands like object detection, Visual Odometry or SLAM. Commonly it is assumed, that the acquired images and thus the patches extracted around keypoints originate from a perspective projection ignoring image distortion or completely different types of projections such as omnidirectional or fisheye. Usually the deviations from a perfect perspective projection are corrected by undistortion. Latter, however, introduces severe artifacts if the cameras field-of-view gets larger. In this paper, we propose a dist…
Automated Parking is a low speed manoeuvring scenario which is quite unstructured and complex, requiring full 360° near-field sensing around the vehicle. In this paper, we discuss the design and implementation of an automated parking system from the perspective of camera based deep learning algorithms. We provide a holistic overview of an industrial system covering the embedded system, use cases and the deep learning architecture. We demonstrate a real-time multi-task deep learning network called FisheyeMultiNet, which detects all the necessary objects for parking on a low-power embedded syste…

Recent work about synthetic indoor datasets from perspective views has shown significant improvements of object detection results with Convolutional Neural Networks(CNNs). In this paper, we introduce THEODORE: a novel, large-scale indoor dataset containing 100,000 high-resolution diversified fisheye images with 14 classes. To this end, we create 3D virtual environments of living rooms, different human characters and interior textures. Beside capturing fisheye images from virtual environments we create annotations for semantic segmentation, instance masks and bounding boxes for object detection…
360-degree cameras offer the possibility to cover a large area, for example an entire room, without using multiple distributed vision sensors. However, geometric distortions introduced by their lenses make computer vision problems more challenging. In this paper we address face detection in 360-degree fisheye images. We show how a face detector trained on regular images can be re-trained for this purpose, and we also provide a 360-degree fisheye-like version of the popular FDDB face detection dataset, which we call FDDB-360.

Object detection is a comprehensively studied problem in autonomous driving. However, it has been relatively less explored in the case of fisheye cameras. The strong radial distortion breaks the translation invariance inductive bias of Convolutional Neural Networks. Thus, we present the WoodScape fisheye object detection challenge for autonomous driving which was held as part of the CVPR 2022 Workshop on Omnidirectional Computer Vision (OmniCV). This is one of the first competitions focused on fisheye camera object detection. We encouraged the participants to design models which work natively …

Pedestrian detection in images is a topic that has been studied extensively, but existing detectors designed for perspective images do not perform as successfully on images taken with top-view fisheye cameras, mainly due to the orientation variation of people in such images. In our proposed approach, several perspective views are generated from a fisheye image and then concatenated to form a composite image. As pedestrians in this composite image are more likely to be upright, existing detectors designed and trained for perspective images can be applied directly without additional training. We…
Recent methods for people detection in overhead, fisheye images either use radially-aligned bounding boxes to represent people, assuming people always appear along image radius or require significant pre-/post-processing which radically increases computational complexity. In this work, we develop an end-to-end rotation-aware people detection method, named RAPiD, that detects people using arbitrarily-oriented bounding boxes. Our fully-convolutional neural network directly regresses the angle of each bounding box using a periodic loss function, which accounts for angle periodicities. We have als…
The development in the field of autonomous driving goes hand in hand with ever new developments in the field of image processing and machine learning methods. In order to fully exploit the advantages of deep learning, it is necessary to have sufficient labeled training data available. This is especially not the case for omnidirectional fisheye cameras. As a solution, we propose in this paper to use synthetic training data based on Unity3D. A five-pass algorithm is used to create a virtual fisheye camera. This synthetic training data is evaluated for the application of free space detection for …
Line segment detection is essential for high-level tasks in computer vision and robotics. Currently, most stateof-the-art (SOTA) methods are dedicated to detecting straight line segments in undistorted pinhole images, thus distortions on fisheye or spherical images may largely degenerate their performance. Targeting at the unified line segment detection (ULSD) for both distorted and undistorted images, we propose to represent line segments with the Bezier curve model. Then the line segment detection is tackled by the Bezier curve regression with an end-to-end network, which is model-free and w…

Keypoint detection and description is a commonly used building block in computer vision systems particularly for robotics and autonomous driving. However, the majority of techniques to date have focused on standard cameras with little consideration given to fisheye cameras which are commonly used in urban driving and automated parking. We make use of SuperPoint as our baseline which is a self-supervised keypoint detector and descriptor that has achieved state-of-the-art results on homography estimation. We i…
In this paper, we introduce a moving object detection algorithm for fisheye cameras used in autonomous driving. We reformulate the three commonly used constraints in rectilinear images (epipolar, positive depth and positive height constraints) to spherical coordinates which is invariant to specific camera configuration once the calibration is known. One of the main challenging use case in autonomous driving is to detect parallel moving objects which suffer from motion-parallax ambiguity. To alleviate this, we formulate an additional fourth constraint, called the anti-parallel constraint, which…

The 3D visual perception for vehicles with the surround-view fisheye camera system is a critical and challenging task for low-cost urban autonomous driving. While existing monocular 3D object detection methods perform not well enough on the fisheye images for mass production, partly due to the lack of 3D datasets of such images. In this paper, we manage to overcome and avoid the difficulty of acquiring the large scale of accurate 3D labeled truth data, by breaking down the 3D object detection task into some sub-tasks, such as vehicle's contact point detection, type classification, re-identific…

Object detection has recently experienced substantial progress. Yet, the widely adopted horizontal bounding box representation is not appropriate for ubiquitous oriented objects such as objects in aerial images and scene texts. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective framework to detect multi-oriented objects. Instead of directly regressing the four vertices, we glide the vertex of the horizontal bounding box on each corresponding side to accurately describe a multi-oriented object. Specifically, We regress four length ratios characterizing the relative gliding offset on each correspo…

Moving Object Detection (MOD) is an important task for achieving robust autonomous driving. An autonomous vehicle has to estimate collision risk with other interacting objects in the environment and calculate an optional trajectory. Collision risk is typically higher for moving objects than static ones due to the need to estimate the future states and poses of the objects for decision making. This is particularly important for near-range objects around the vehicle which are typically detected by a fisheye surround-view system that captures a 360° view of the scene. In this work, we propose a C…

Conventional convolution neural networks (CNNs) trained on narrow Field-of-View (FoV) images are the state-of-the-art approaches for object recognition tasks. Some methods proposed the adaptation of CNNs to ultra-wide FoV images by learning deformable kernels. However, they are limited by the Euclidean geometry and their accuracy degrades under strong distortions caused by fisheye projections. In this work, we demonstrate that learning the shape of convolution kernels in non-Euclidean spaces is better than existing deformable kernel methods. In particular, we propose a new approach that learns…
We propose a novel 3D human pose detector using two panoramic cameras. We show that transforming fisheye perspectives to rectilinear views allows a direct application of two-dimensional deep-learning pose estimation methods, without the explicit need for a costly re-training step to compensate for fisheye image distortions. By utilizing panoramic cameras, our method is capable of accurately estimating human poses over a large field of view. This renders our method suitable for ergonomic analyses and other pose based assessments.

This paper proposes an efficient autonomous valet parking system utilizing only cameras which are the most widely used sensor. To capture more information instantaneously and respond rapidly to changes in the surrounding environment, fisheye cameras which have a wider angle of view compared to pinhole cameras are used. Accordingly, visual simultaneous localization and mapping is used to identify the layout of the parking lot and track the location of the vehicle. In addition, the input image frames are converted into around view monitor images to resolve the distortion of fisheye lens because …

People detection in top-view, fish-eye images is challenging as people in fish-eye images often appear in arbitrary directions and are distorted differently. Due to this unique radial geometry, axis-aligned people detectors often work poorly on fish-eye frames. Recent works account for this variability by modifying existing anchor-based detectors or relying on complex pre/post-processing. Anchor-based methods spread a set of pre-defined bounding boxes on the input image, most of which are invalid. In addition to being inefficient, this approach could lead to a significant imbalance between the…

Near field depth estimation around a self driving car is an important function that can be achieved by four wide angle fisheye cameras having a field of view of over 180. Depth estimation based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) produce state of the art results, but progress is hindered because depth annotation cannot be obtained manually. Synthetic datasets are commonly used but they have limitations. For instance, they do not capture the extensive variability in the appearance of objects like vehicles present in real datasets. There is also a domain shift while performing inference on n…

Dual-fisheye lens cameras have been increasingly used for 360-degree immersive imaging. However, the limited overlapping field of views and misalignment between the two lenses give rise to visible discontinuities in the stitching boundaries. This paper introduces a novel method for dual-fisheye camera stitching that adaptively minimizes the discontinuities in the overlapping regions to generate full spherical 360-degree images. Results show that this approach can produce good quality stitched images for Samsung Gear 360 -- a dual-fisheye camera, even with hard-to-stitch objects in the stitchin…

Estimating the pose of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or drone is a challenging task. It is useful for many applications such as navigation, surveillance, tracking objects on the ground, and 3D reconstruction. In this work, we present a LiDAR-camera-based relative pose estimation method between a drone and a ground vehicle, using a LiDAR sensor and a fisheye camera on the vehicle's roof and another fisheye camera mounted under the drone. The LiDAR sensor directly observes the drone and measures its position, and the two cameras estimate the relative orientation using indirect observation of …
Distortion rectification is often required for fisheye images. The generation-based method is one mainstream solution due to its label-free property, but its naive skip-connection and overburdened decoder will cause blur and incomplete correction. First, the skip-connection directly transfers the image features, which may introduce distortion and cause incomplete correction. Second, the decoder is overburdened during simultaneously reconstructing the content and structure of the image, resulting in vague performance. To solve these two problems, in this paper, we focus on the interpretable cor…
