The ability to detect pedestrians and other moving objects is crucial for an autonomous vehicle. This must be done in real-time with minimum system overhead. This paper discusses the implementation of a surround view system to identify moving as well as static objects that are close to the ego vehicle. The algorithm works on 4 views captured by fisheye cameras which are merged into a single frame. The moving object detection and tracking solution uses minimal system overhead to isolate regions of interest (ROIs) containing moving objects. These ROIs are then analyzed using a deep neural network (DNN) to categorize the moving object. With deployment and testing on a real car in urban environments, we have demonstrated the practical feasibility of the solution. The video demos of our algorithm have been uploaded to Youtube: https://youtu.be/vpoCfC724iA, https://youtu.be/2X4aqH2bMBs

We design a fast car detection and tracking algorithm for traffic monitoring fisheye video mounted on crossroads. We use ICIP 2020 VIP Cup dataset and adopt YOLOv5 as the object detection base model. The nighttime video of this dataset is very challenging, and the detection accuracy (AP50) of the base model is about 54%. We design a reliable car detection and tracking algorithm based on the concept of bounding box propagation among frames, which provides 17.9 percentage points (pp) and 6.2 pp. accuracy improvement over the base model for the nighttime and daytime videos, respectively. To speed…
In this paper, we introduce a moving object detection algorithm for fisheye cameras used in autonomous driving. We reformulate the three commonly used constraints in rectilinear images (epipolar, positive depth and positive height constraints) to spherical coordinates which is invariant to specific camera configuration once the calibration is known. One of the main challenging use case in autonomous driving is to detect parallel moving objects which suffer from motion-parallax ambiguity. To alleviate this, we formulate an additional fourth constraint, called the anti-parallel constraint, which…

It is an important task to reliably detect and track multiple moving objects for video surveillance and monitoring. However, when occlusion occurs in nonlinear motion scenarios, many existing methods often fail to continuously track multiple moving objects of interest. In this paper we propose an effective approach for detection and tracking of multiple moving objects with occlusion. Moving targets are initially detected using a simple yet efficient block matching technique, providing rough location information for multiple object tracking. More accurate location information is then estimated …

Event-based vision sensors, such as the Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS), are ideally suited for real-time motion analysis. The unique properties encompassed in the readings of such sensors provide high temporal resolution, superior sensitivity to light and low latency. These properties provide the grounds to estimate motion extremely reliably in the most sophisticated scenarios but they come at a price - modern event-based vision sensors have extremely low resolution and produce a lot of noise. Moreover, the asynchronous nature of the event stream calls for novel algorithms. This paper presents a …

Moving Object Detection (MOD) is an important task for achieving robust autonomous driving. An autonomous vehicle has to estimate collision risk with other interacting objects in the environment and calculate an optional trajectory. Collision risk is typically higher for moving objects than static ones due to the need to estimate the future states and poses of the objects for decision making. This is particularly important for near-range objects around the vehicle which are typically detected by a fisheye surround-view system that captures a 360° view of the scene. In this work, we propose a C…

In this paper we propose a novel approach for detecting and tracking objects in videos with variable background i.e. videos captured by moving cameras without any additional sensor. In a video captured by a moving camera, both the background and foreground are changing in each frame of the image sequence. So for these videos, modeling a single background with traditional background modeling methods is infeasible and thus the detection of actual moving object in a variable background is a challenging task. To detect actual moving object in this work, spatio-temporal blobs have been generated in…
This paper proposes a novel approach to create an automated visual surveillance system which is very efficient in detecting and tracking moving objects in a video captured by moving camera without any apriori information about the captured scene. Separating foreground from the background is challenging job in videos captured by moving camera as both foreground and background information change in every consecutive frames of the image sequence; thus a pseudo-motion is perceptive in background. In the proposed algorithm, the pseudo-motion in background is estimated and compensated using phase co…

Estimating the pose of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or drone is a challenging task. It is useful for many applications such as navigation, surveillance, tracking objects on the ground, and 3D reconstruction. In this work, we present a LiDAR-camera-based relative pose estimation method between a drone and a ground vehicle, using a LiDAR sensor and a fisheye camera on the vehicle's roof and another fisheye camera mounted under the drone. The LiDAR sensor directly observes the drone and measures its position, and the two cameras estimate the relative orientation using indirect observation of …
We present MaskFusion, a real-time, object-aware, semantic and dynamic RGB-D SLAM system that goes beyond traditional systems which output a purely geometric map of a static scene. MaskFusion recognizes, segments and assigns semantic class labels to different objects in the scene, while tracking and reconstructing them even when they move independently from the camera. As an RGB-D camera scans a cluttered scene, image-based instance-level semantic segmentation creates semantic object masks that enable real-time object recognition and the creation of an object-level representation for the world…

From the captured egocentric live stream, our CNN based 3D pose estimation approach runs at 60H…

Tracking fast moving objects, which appear as blurred streaks in video sequences, is a difficult task for standard trackers as the object position does not overlap in consecutive video frames and texture information of the objects is blurred. Up-to-date approaches tuned for this task are based on background subtraction with static background and slow deblurring algorithms. In this paper, we present a tracking-by-segmentation approach implemented using state-of-the-art deep learning methods that performs near-realtime tracking on real-world video sequences. Most tracking-by-detection methods employ a local search window around the predicted object location in the current frame assuming the previous location is accurate, the trajectory is smooth, and the computational capacity permits a search radius that can accommodate the maximum speed yet small enough to reduce mismatches. These, however, may not be valid always, in particular for fast and irregularly moving objects. Here, we present an object tracker that is not limited to a local search window and has ability to probe efficiently the entire frame. Our method generates a small number of "high…

We present a novel non-rigid reconstruction method using a moving RGB-D camera. Current approaches use only non-rigid part of the scene and completely ignore the rigid background. Non-rigid parts often lack sufficient geometric and photometric information for tracking large frame-to-frame motion. Our approach uses camera pose estimated from the rigid background for foreground tracking. This enables robust foreground tracking in situations where large frame-to-frame motion occurs. Moreover, we are proposing a multi-scale deformation graph which improves non-rigid tracking without compromising t…
We propose an unsupervised method for detecting and tracking moving objects in 3D, in unlabelled RGB-D videos. The method begins with classic handcrafted techniques for segmenting objects using motion cues: we estimate optical flow and camera motion, and conservatively segment regions that appear to be moving independently of the background. Treating these initial segments as pseudo-labels, we learn an ensemble of appearance-based 2D and 3D detectors, under heavy data augmentation. We use this ensemble to detect new instances of the "moving" type, even if they are not moving, and add these as …
This paper proposes an approach to detect moving objects in Wide Area Motion Imagery (WAMI), in which the objects are both small and well separated. Identifying the objects only using foreground appearance is difficult since a $100-$pixel vehicle is hard to distinguish from objects comprising the background. In order to reliably detect low contrast and small objects, we configure the background subtraction to extract foreground regions that might be objects of in…

Detecting and tracking moving targets through foliage is difficult, and for many cases even impossible in regular aerial images and videos. We present an initial light-weight and drone-operated 1D camera array that supports parallel synthetic aperture aerial imaging. Our main finding is that color anomaly detection benefits significantly from image integration when compared to conventional raw images or video frames (on average 97% vs. 42% in precision in our field experiments). We demonstrate, that these two contributions can lead to the detection and tracking of moving people through densely…

The crux of long-term tracking lies in the difficulty of tracking the target with discontinuous moving caused by out-of-view or occlusion. Existing long-term tracking methods follow two typical strategies. The first strategy employs a local tracker to perform smooth tracking and uses another re-detector to detect the target when the target is lost. While it can exploit the temporal context like historical appearances and locations of the target, a potential limitation of such strategy is that the local tracker tends to misidentify a nearby distractor as the target instead of activating the re-…

Moving target shadows among video synthetic aperture radar (Video-SAR) images are always interfered by low scattering backgrounds and cluttered noises, causing poor detec-tion-tracking accuracy. Thus, a shadow-background-noise 3D spatial decomposition (SBN-3D-SD) model is proposed to enhance shadows for higher detection-tracking accuracy. It leverages the sparse property of shadows, the low-rank property of back-grounds, and the Gaussian property of noises to perform 3D spatial three-decomposition. It separates shadows from back-grounds and noises by the alternating direction method of multi-p…
