Let $k \geq 2$ be an integer. Kouider and Lonc proved that the vertex set of every graph $G$ with $n \geq n_0(k)$ vertices and minimum degree at least $n/k$ can be covered by $k - 1$ cycles. Our main result states that for every $α> 0$ and $p = p(n) \in (0, 1]$, the same conclusion holds for graphs $G$ with minimum degree $(1/k + α)np$ that are sparse in the sense that \[
e_G(X,Y) \leq p|X||Y| + o(np\sqrt{|X||Y|}/\log^3 n) \qquad \forall X,Y\subseteq V(G). \] In particular, this allows us to determine the local resilience of random and pseudorandom graphs with respect to having a vertex cover by a fixed number of cycles. The proof uses a version of the absorbing method in sparse expander graphs.
We compute the number of equivalence classes of nonperiodic covering cycles of given length in a non oriented connected graph. A covering cycle is a closed path that traverses each edge of the graph at least once. A special case is the number of Euler cycles in the non oriented graph. An identity relating the numbers of covering cycles of any length in a graph to a product of determinants is obtained.
The problem of packing Hamilton cycles in random and pseudorandom graphs has been studied extensively. In this paper, we look at the dual question of covering all edges of a graph by Hamilton cycles and prove that if a graph with maximum degree $Δ$ satisfies some basic expansion properties and contains a family of $(1-o(1))Δ/2$ edge disjoint Hamilton cycles, then there also exists a covering of its edges by $(1+o(1))Δ/2$ Hamilton cycles. This implies that for every $α>0$ and every $p \geq n^{α-1}$ there exists a covering of all edges of $G(n,p)$ by $(1+o(1))np/2$ Hamilton cycles asymptotically…
Let $k$ be a positive integer. Let $G$ be a balanced bipartite graph of order $2n$ with bipartition $(X, Y)$, and $S$ a subset of $X$. Suppose that every pair of nonadjacent vertices $(x,y)$ with $x\in S, y\in Y$ satisfies $d(x)+d(y)\geq n+1$. We show that if $|S|\geq 2k+2$, then $G$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles covering $S$ such that each of the $k$ cycles contains at least two vertices of $S$. Here, both the degree condition and the lower bound of $|S|$ are best possible. And we also show that if $|S|=2k+1$, then $G$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles such that each of the $k$ cycles contains at l…
We observe two kinds of fractal approximating graphs, the background structures of the generalized Sierpinski Arrowhead Curve independently of the recursive curves. Both graphs related to the generalized Sierpinski Gasket and based on a checked triangular generator pattern. In the Overall Graph we connect the corners of the up facing neighbouring dark tiles. In the Inscribed Graph we connect their centroids. We describe their cardinalities in general case with recursive and explicit formulas, the numbers of their vertices and edges, their edge covering Hamiltonian-paths and -cycles, and their …
Given a weighted graph $G(V,E)$ with weight $\mathbf w: E\rightarrow Z^{|E|}_{+}$. A $k-$cycle covering is an edge subset $A$ of $E$ such that $G-A$ has no $k-$cycle. The minimum weight of $k-$cycle covering is the weighted covering number on $k-$cycle, denoted by $τ_{k}(G_{w})$. In this paper, we design a $k-1/2$ approximation algorithm for the weighted covering number on $k-$cycle when $k$ is odd. Given a weighted graph $G(V,E)$ with weight $\mathbf w: E\rightarrow Z^{|E|}_{+}$. A $k-$clique covering is an edge subset $A$ of $E$ such that $G-A$ has no $k-$clique. The minimum weight of $k-$cl…
An avoidance problem of configurations in 4-cycle systems is investigated by generalizing the notion of sparseness, which is originally from Erdős' r-sparse conjecture on Steiner triple systems. A 4-cycle system of order v, 4CS(v), is said to be r-sparse if for every integer j satisfying 1 < j < r+1 it contains no configurations consisting of j 4-cycles whose union contains precisely j+3 vertices. If an r-sparse 4CS(v) is also free from copies of a configuration on two 4-cycles sharing a diagonal, called the double-diamond, we say it is strictly r-sparse. In this paper, we show that for every …
A Hamilton cycle in a digraph is a cycle that passes through all the vertices, where all the arcs are oriented in the same direction. The problem of finding Hamilton cycles in directed graphs is well studied and is known to be hard. One of the main reasons for this, is that there is no general tool for finding Hamilton cycles in directed graphs comparable to the so called Pos?a `rotation-extension' technique for the undirected analogue. Let ${\mathcal D}(n,p)$ denote the random digraph on vertex set $[n]$, obtained by adding each directed edge independently with probability $p$. Here, we prese…
We prove a homology vanishing theorem for graphs with positive Bakry-Émery curvature, analogous to a classic result of Bochner on manifolds \cite{Bochner}. Specifically, we prove that if a graph has positive curvature at every vertex, then its first homology group is trivial, where the notion of homology that we use for graphs is the path homology developed by Grigor'yan, Lin, Muranov, and Yau \cite{Grigoryan2}. %\Hm{added the fundamental group curvature relation} We moreover prove that the fundamental group is finite for graphs with positive Bakry-Émery curvature, analogous to a classic resul…
We prove that there exists a positive constant εsuch that if \log n / n \le p \le n^{-1+ε}, then asymptotically almost surely the random graph G ~ G(n,p) contains a collection of \lfloor δ(G)/2 \rfloor edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles.
In this paper, two open conjectures are disproved. One conjecture regards independent coverings of sparse partite graphs, whereas the other conjecture regards orthogonal colourings of tree graphs. A relation between independent coverings and orthogonal colourings is established. This relation is applied to find independent coverings of some sparse partite graphs. Additionally, a degree condition providing the existence of an independent covering in the case where the graph has a square number of vertices is found.
An Euler tour in a hypergraph (also called a rank-2 universal cycle or 1-overlap cycle in the context of designs) is a closed walk that traverses every edge exactly once. In this paper, we define a covering $k$-hypergraph to be a non-empty $k$-uniform hypergraph in which every $(k-1)$-subset of vertices appear together in at least one edge. We then show that every covering $k$-hypergraph, for $k\geq 3$, admits an Euler tour if and only if it has at least two edges.
Let $L_{c,n}$ denote the size of the longest cycle in $G(n,{c}/{n})$, $c>1$ constant. We show that there exists a continuous function $f(c)$ such that $ L_{c,n}/n \to f(c)$ a.s. for $c\geq 20$, thus extending a result of the author and Frieze to smaller values of $c$. Thereafter, for $c\geq 20$, we determine the limit of the probability that $G(n,c/n)$ contains cycles of every length between the length of its shortest and its longest cycles as $n\to \infty$.
The notion of robust expansion has played a central role in the solution of several conjectures involving the packing of Hamilton cycles in graphs and directed graphs. These and other results usually rely on the fact that every robustly expanding (di)graph with suitably large minimum degree contains a Hamilton cycle. Previous proofs of this require Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma and so this fact can only be applied to dense, sufficiently large robust expanders. We give a proof that does not use the Regularity Lemma and, indeed, we can apply our result to suitable sparse robustly expanding digrap…
A new ordering, extending the notion of universal cycles of Chung {\em et al.} (1992), is proposed for the blocks of $k$-uniform set systems. Existence of minimum coverings of pairs by triples that possess such an ordering is established for all orders. Application to the construction of short 2-radius sequences is given, with some new 2-radius sequences found through computer search.
Rigidity, arising in discrete geometry, is the property of a structure that does not flex. Laman provides a combinatorial characterization of rigid graphs in the Euclidean plane, and thus rigid graphs in the Euclidean plane have applications in graph theory. We discover a sufficient partition condition of packing spanning rigid subgraphs and spanning trees. As a corollary, we show that a simple graph $G$ contains a packing of $k$ spanning rigid subgraphs and $l$ spanning trees if $G$ is $(4k+2l)$-edge-connected, and $G-Z$ is essentially $(6k+2l - 2k|Z|)$-edge-connected for every $Z\subset V(G)…
We describe an algorithm for finding Hamilton cycles in random graphs. Our model is the random graph $G=\gc$. In this model $G$ is drawn uniformly from graphs with vertex set $[n]$, $m$ edges and minimum degree at least three. We focus on the case where $m=cn$ for constant $c$. If $c$ is sufficiently large then our algorithm runs in $O(n^{1+o(1)})$ time and succeeds w.h.p.
We show that any $3$-connected cubic plane graph on $n$ vertices, with all faces of size at most $6$, can be made bipartite by deleting no more than $\sqrt{(p+3t)n/5}$ edges, where $p$ and $t$ are the numbers of pentagonal and triangular faces, respectively. In particular, any such graph can be made bipartite by deleting at most $\sqrt{12n/5}$ edges. This bound is tight, and we characterise the extremal graphs. We deduce tight lower bounds on the size of a maximum cut and a maximum independent set for this class of graphs. This extends and sharpens the results of Faria, Klein and Stehlik [SIAM…
In a recent work, Allen, Böttcher, Hàn, Kohayakawa, and Person provided a first general analogue of the blow-up lemma applicable to sparse (pseudo)random graphs thus generalising the classic tool of Komlós, Sárközy, and Szemerédi. Roughly speaking, they showed that with high probability in the random graph $G_{n,p}$ for $p \geq C(\log n/n)^{1/Δ}$, sparse regular pairs behave similarly as complete bipartite graphs with respect to embedding a spanning graph $H$ with $Δ(H) \leq Δ$. However, this is typically only optimal when $Δ\in \{2,3\}$ and $H$ either contains a triangle ($Δ= 2$) or many copi…
We discuss the length $\vec{L}_{c,n}$ of the longest directed cycle in the sparse random digraph $D_{n,p},p=c/n$, $c$ constant. We show that for large $c$ there exists a function $\vec{f}(c)$ such that $\vec{L}_{c,n}/n\to \vec{f}(c)$ a.s. The function $\vec{f}(c)=1-\sum_{k=1}^\infty p_k(c)e^{-kc}$ where $p_k$ is a polynomial in $c$. We are only able to explicitly give the values $p_1,p_2$, although we could in principle compute any $p_k$.

We see immediately that the length of the longest path is also asymptotic to $f(c)n$ w.h.p.
In 1985, Arjeh Cohen and Jacques Tits proved the existence of a 4-cycle-free 2-fold cover of the hypercube. This Cohen-Tits cover is closely related to the signed adjacency matrix that Hao Huang used last year in his proof of the Sensitivity Conjecture. Terence Tao observed that Huang's signed adjacency matrix can be understood by lifting functions on an elementary abelian 2-group to functions on a central extension. Inspired by Tao's observation, we generalize the Cohen-Tits cover by constructing, as Cayley graphs for extraspecial p-groups, two infinite families of 4-cycle-free p-fold covers …
The {\em independence ratio} of a graph $G$ is defined by \[ ι(G) := \sup_{X \subset V(G)} \frac{|X|}{α(X)},\] where $α(X)$ is the independence number of the subgraph of $G$ induced by $X$. The independence ratio is a relaxation of the chromatic number $χ(G)$ in the sense that $χ(G) \geq ι(G)$ for every graph $G$, while for many natural classes of graphs these quantities are almost equal. In this paper, we address two old conjectures of Erdős on cycles in graphs with large chromatic number and a conjecture of Erdős and Hajnal on graphs with infinite chromatic number.
Let D(n,p) be the random directed graph on n vertices where each of the n(n-1) possible arcs is present independently with probability p. A celebrated result of Frieze shows that if $p\ge(\log n+ω(1))/n$ then D(n,p) typically has a directed Hamilton cycle, and this is best possible. In this paper, we obtain a strengthening of this result, showing that under the same condition, the number of directed Hamilton cycles in D(n,p) is typically $n!(p(1+o(1)))^{n}$. We also prove a hitting-time version of this statement, showing that in the random directed graph process, as soon as every vertex has in…
Given a set $R$, a hypergraph is $R$-uniform if the size of every hyperedge belongs to $R$. A hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called \textit{covering} if every vertex pair is contained in some hyperedge in $\mathcal{H}$. In this note, we show that every covering $[3]$-uniform hypergraph on $n\geq 6$ vertices contains a Berge cycle $C_s$ for any $3\leq s\leq n$. As an application, we determine the maximum Lagrangian of $k$-uniform Berge-$C_{t}$-free hypergraphs and Berge-$P_{t}$-free hypergraphs.
Let $L$ be subset of $\{3,4,\dots\}$ and let $X_{n,M}^{(L)}$ be the number of cycles belonging to unicyclic components whose length is in $L$ in the random graph $G(n,M)$. We find the limiting distribution of $X_{n,M}^{(L)}$ in the subcritical regime $M=cn$ with $c<1/2$ and the critical regime $M=\frac{n}{2}\left(1+μn^{-1/3}\right)$ with $μ=O(1)$. Depending on the regime and a condition involving the series $\sum_{l \in L} \frac{z^l}{2l}$, we obtain in the limit either a Poisson or a normal distribution as $n\to\infty$.
We introduce the concept of constant $2$-labelling of a weighted graph and show how it can be used to obtain perfect weighted coverings. Roughly speaking, a constant $2$-labelling of a weighted graph is a $2$-colouring of its vertex set which preserves the sum of the weights of black vertices under some automorphisms. We study this problem on four types of weighted cycles. Our results on cycles allow us to determine $(r,a,b)$-codes in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ whenever $|a-b|>4$, $r\ge2$ and we give the precise values of $a$ and $b$. This is a refinement of Axenovich's theorem proved in 2003.
In this paper we investigate results of the form "every graph $G$ has a cycle $C$ such that the induced subgraph of $G$ on $V(G)\setminus V(C)$ has small maximum degree." Such results haven't been studied before, but are motivated by the Bessy and Thomassé Theorem which states that the vertices of any graph $G$ can be covered by a cycle $C_1$ in $G$ and disjoint cycle $C_2$ in the complement of $G$. There are two main theorems in this paper. The first is that every graph has a cycle with $Δ(G[V(G)\setminus V(C)])\leq \frac12(|V(G)\setminus V(C)|-1)$. The bound on the maximum degree $Δ(G[V(G)\s…
Long paths and cycles in sparse random graphs and digraphs were studied intensively in the 1980's. It was finally shown by Frieze in 1986 that the random graph $\cG(n,p)$ with $p=c/n$ has a cycle on at all but at most $(1+ε)ce^{-c}n$ vertices with high probability, where $ε=ε(c)\to 0$ as $c\to\infty$. This estimate on the number of uncovered vertices is essentially tight due to vertices of degree 1. However, for the random digraph $\cD(n,p)$ no tight result was known and the best estimate was a factor of $c/2$ away from the corresponding lower bound. In this work we close this gap and show tha…
A de Bruijn covering code is a q-ary string S so that every q-ary string is at most R symbol changes from some n-word appearing consecutively in S. We introduce these codes and prove that they can have length close to the smallest possible covering code. The proof employs tools from field theory, probability, and linear algebra. We also prove a number of ``spectral'' results on de Bruijn covering codes. Included is a table of the best known bounds on the lengths of small binary de Bruijn covering codes, up to R=11 and n=13, followed by several open questions in this area.
We answer two extremal questions about odd cycles that naturally arise in the study of sparse pseudorandom graphs. Let $Γ$ be an $(n,d,λ)$-graph, i.e., $n$-vertex, $d$-regular graphs with all nontrivial eigenvalues in the interval $[-λ,λ]$. Krivelevich, Lee, and Sudakov conjectured that, whenever $λ^{2k-1}\ll d^{2k}/n$, every subgraph $G$ of $Γ$ with $(1/2+o(1))e(Γ)$ edges contains an odd cycle $C_{2k+1}$. Aigner-Horev, Hàn, and the third author proved a weaker statement by allowing an extra polylogarithmic factor in the assumption $λ^{2k-1}\ll d^{2k}/n$, but we completely remove it and hence …
In 1962, Pósa conjectured that a graph $G=(V, E)$ contains a square of a Hamiltonian cycle if $δ(G)\ge 2n/3$. Only more than thirty years later Komlós, Sárkőzy, and Szemerédi proved this conjecture using the so-called Blow-Up Lemma. Here we extend their result to a random graph setting. We show that for every $ε> 0$ and $p=n^{-1/2+ε}$ a.a.s. every subgraph of $G_{n,p}$ with minimum degree at least $(2/3+ε)np$ contains the square of a cycle on $(1-o(1))n$ vertices. This is almost best possible in three ways: (1) for $p\ll n^{-1/2}$ the random graph will not contain any square of a long cycle (2…

Given $3 \leq k \leq s$, we say that a $k$-uniform hypergraph $C^k_s$ is a tight cycle on $s$ vertices if there is a cyclic ordering of the vertices of $C^k_s$ such that every $k$ consecutive vertices under this ordering form an edge. We prove that if $k \ge 3$ and $s \ge 2k^2$, then every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $(1/2 + o(1))n$ has the property that every vertex is covered by a copy of $C^k_s$. Our result is asymptotically best possible for infinitely many pairs of $s$ and $k$, e.g. when $s$ and $k$ are coprime. A perfect $C^k_s$-tiling is a spann…
We consider extremal problems for subgraphs of pseudorandom graphs. For graphs $F$ and $Γ$ the generalized Turán density $π_F(Γ)$ denotes the density of a maximum subgraph of $Γ$, which contains no copy of~$F$. Extending classical Turán type results for odd cycles, we show that $π_{F}(Γ)=1/2$ provided $F$ is an odd cycle and $Γ$ is a sufficiently pseudorandom graph. In particular, for $(n,d,λ)$-graphs $Γ$, i.e., $n$-vertex, $d$-regular graphs with all non-trivial eigenvalues in the interval $[-λ,λ]$, our result holds for odd cycles of length $\ell$, provided \[ λ^{\ell-2}\ll \frac{d^{\ell-1}}n…
We prove that the number of Hamilton cycles in the random graph G(n,p) is n!p^n(1+o(1))^n a.a.s., provided that p\geq (ln n+ln ln n+ω(1))/n. Furthermore, we prove the hitting-time version of this statement, showing that in the random graph process, the edge that creates a graph of minimum degree 2 creates (ln n/e)^n(1+o(1))^n Hamilton cycles a.a.s.
Motivated by understanding the quality of tractable convex relaxations of intractable polytopes, Ko et al. gave a closed-form expression for the volume of a standard relaxation $\mathscr{Q}(G)$ of the boolean quadric polytope (also known as the (full) correlation polytope) $\mathscr{P}(G)$ of the complete graph $G=K_n$. We extend this work to structured sparse graphs, giving: (i) an efficient algorithm for $vol(\mathscr{Q}(G))$ when $G$ has bounded tree width, (ii) closed-form expressions (and asymptotic behaviors) for $vol(\mathscr{Q}(G))$ for all stars, paths, and cycles, and (iii) a closed-…
Building on the techniques from the breakthrough paper of Harel, Mousset and Samotij, which solved the upper tail problem for cliques, we compute the asymptotics of the upper tail for the number of induced copies of the 4-cycle in the binomial random graph $G_{n,p}$. We observe a new phenomenon in the theory of large deviations of subgraph counts. This phenomenon is that, in a certain (large) range of $p$, the upper tail of the induced 4-cycle does not admit a naive mean-field approximation.
Let C(G) denote the set of lengths of cycles in a graph G. In the first part of this paper, we study the minimum possible value of |C(G)| over all graphs G of average degree d and girth g. Erdos conjectured that |C(G)| =Ω(d^{\lfloor (g-1)/2\rfloor}) for all such graphs, and we prove this conjecture. In particular, the longest cycle in a graph of average degree d and girth g has length Ω(d^{\lfloor (g-1)/2\rfloor}). The study of this problem was initiated by Ore in 1967 and our result improves all previously known lower bounds on the length of the longest cycle. Moreover, our bound cannot be im…

We investigate the emergence of spanning structures in sparse pseudo-random $k$-uniform hypergraphs, using the following comparatively weak notion of pseudo-randomness. A $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices is called $(p,α,ε)$-pseudo-random if for all (not necessarily disjoint) vertex subsets $A_1,\dots, A_k{\subseteq} V(H)$ with $|A_1|\cdots |A_k|{\geq}αn^{k}$ we have $$e(A_1,\dots, A_k)=(1\pmε)p |A_1|\cdots |A_k|.$$ For any linear $k$-uniform $F$ we provide a bound on $α=α(n)$ in terms of $p=p(n)$ and $F$, such that (under natural divisibility assumptions on $n$) any $k$-uniform $\big…
A classic result of Erdős, Gyárfás and Pyber states that for every coloring of the edges of $K_n$ with $r$ colors, there is a cover of its vertex set by at most $f(r) = O(r^2 \log r)$ vertex-disjoint monochromatic cycles. In particular, the minimum number of such covering cycles does not depend on the size of $K_n$ but only on the number of colors. We initiate the study of this phenomena in the case where $K_n$ is replaced by the random graph $\mathcal G(n,p)$. Given a fixed integer $r$ and $p =p(n) \ge n^{-1/r + \varepsilon}$, we show that with high probability the random graph $G \sim \mathc…
It was shown by Grohe et al. that nowhere dense classes of graphs admit sparse neighbourhood covers of small degree. We show that a monotone graph class admits sparse neighbourhood covers if and only if it is nowhere dense. The existence of such covers for nowhere dense classes is established through bounds on so-called weak colouring numbers. The core results of this paper are various lower and upper bounds on the weak colouring numbers and other, closely related generalised colouring numbers. We prove tight bounds for these numbers on graphs of bounded tree width. We clarify and tighten the …
The problem of decomposing a complete tripartite graph into 5-cycles was first proposed in 1995 by Mahmoodian and Mirzakhani and since then many attempts have been made to decompose such graphs into 5-cycles. Such attempts were partially successful but parts of the problem still remain open. In this paper, we investigate the problem deeper, decompose more tripartite graphs into 5-cycles, and introduce the Graph Adjacency Matrix (GAM) method for cycle decomposition in general. GAM method transforms the cycle decomposition problem to covering squares with certain polygons. This new formulation i…
A Hamiltonian decomposition of $G$ is a partition of its edge set into disjoint Hamilton cycles. Manikandan and Paulraja conjectured that if $G$ and $H$ are Hamilton cycle decomposable circulant graphs with at least one of them is nonbipartite, then their tensor product is Hamilton cycle decomposable. In this paper, we have proved that, if $G$ is a Hamilton cycle decomposable circulant graph with certain properties and $H$ is a Hamilton cycle decomposable multigraph, then their tensor product is Hamilton cycle decomposable. In particular, tensor products of certain sparse Hamilton cycle decomp…
We give a new deterministic construction of integer sensing matrices that can be used for the recovery of integer-valued signals in compressed sensing. This is a family of $n \times d$ integer matrices, $d \geq n$, with bounded sup-norm and the property that no $\ell$ column vectors are linearly dependent, $\ell \leq n$. Further, if $\ell \leq o(\log n)$ then $d/n \to \infty$ as $n \to \infty$. Our construction comes from particular sets of difference vectors of point-sets in $\mathbb R^n$ that cannot be covered by few parallel hyperplanes. We construct examples of such sets on the $0, \pm 1$ …
