We study the metastable equilibrium properties of the Potts model with heat-bath transition rates using a novel expansion. The method is especially powerful for large number of state spin variables and it is notably accurate in a rather wide range of temperatures around the phase transition.
We investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of the 2D Potts model on the square lattice after a quench below the discontinuous transition point. By means of numerical simulations of systems with q =12,24 and 48 we observe the onset of a stationary regime below the temperature-driven transition, in a temperature interval decreasing with the system size and increasing with q. These results obtained dynamically agree with those obtained from the analytical continuation of the free energy (Meunier and Morel, 2000), from which metastability in the 2D Potts model results to be a finite size effect.
For the first order transition of the Ising model below $T_c$, Isakov has proven that the free energy possesses an essential singularity in the applied field. Such a singularity in the control parameter, anticipated by condensation theory, is believed to be a generic feature of first order transitions, but too weak to be observable. We study these issues for the temperature driven transition of the $q$ states 2D Potts model at $q>q_c=4$. Adapting the droplet model to this case, we relate its parameters to the critical properties at $q_c$ and confront the free energy to the many informations br…
We implemented a GPU based parallel code to perform Monte Carlo simulations of the two dimensional q-state Potts model. The algorithm is based on a checkerboard update scheme and assigns independent random numbers generators to each thread. The implementation allows to simulate systems up to ~10^9 spins with an average time per spin flip of 0.147ns on the fastest GPU card tested, representing a speedup up to 155x, compared with an optimized serial code running on a high-end CPU. The possibility of performing high speed simulations at large enough system sizes allowed us to provide a positive n…
We study the low temperature quench dynamics of the two-dimensional Potts model in the limit of large number of states, q >> 1. We identify a q-independent crossover temperature (the pseudo spinodal) below which no high-temperature metastability stops the curvature driven coarsening process. At short length scales, the latter is decorated by freezing for some lattice geometries, notably the square one. With simple analytic arguments we evaluate the relevant time-scale in the coarsening regime, which turns out to be of Arrhenius form and independent of q for large q. Once taken into account dyn…
Langer theory of metastability provides a description of the lifetime and properties of the metastable phase of the Ising model field-driven transition, describing the magnetic field-driven transition in ferromagnets and the chemical potential-driven transition of fluids. An immediate further step is to apply it to the study of a transition driven by the temperature, as the one underwent by the two-dimensional Potts model. For this model a study based on the analytical continuation of the free energy (Meunier, Morel 2000) predicts the anomalous vanishing of the metastable temperature range in …
We present a phenomenological theory describing the finite-size evaporation-condensation transition of the $q$-state Potts model in the microcanonical ensemble. Our arguments rely on the existence of an exponent $σ$, relating the surface and the volume of the condensed phase droplet. The evaporation-condensation transition temperature and energy converge to their infinite-size values with the same power, $a=(1-σ)/(2-σ)$, of the inverse of the system size. For the 2D Potts model we show, by means of efficient simulations up to $q=24$ and $1024^2$ sites, that the exponent $a$ is compatible with …
We present exact calculations of the partition function for the q-state Potts model for general q, temperature and magnetic field on strips of the square lattices of width $L_{y}=2$ and arbitrary length $L_x = m $ with periodic longitudinal boundary conditions. A new representation of the transfer matrix for the q-state Potts model is introduced which can be used to calculate the determinant of the transfer matrix for an arbirary $m \times m$ lattice with periodic boundary conditions.
A closed-form exact analytical solution for the q-state Potts model on a ladder 2 x oo with arbitrary two-, three-, and four-site interactions in a unit cell is presented. Using the obtained solution it is shown that the finite-size internal energy equation yields an accurate value of the critical temperature for the triangular Potts lattice with three-site interactions in alternate triangular faces. It is argued that the above equation is exact at least for self-dual models on isotropic lattices.
We obtain θ_p(q) = 2θ_s(q) for one-dimensional q-state ferromagnetic Potts models evolving under parallel dynamics at zero temperature from an initially disordered state, where θ_p(q) is the persistence exponent for parallel dynamics and θ_s(q) = -{1/8}+ \frac{2}{π^2}[cos^{-1}{(2-q)/q\sqrt{2}}]^2 [PRL, {\bf 75}, 751, (1995)], the persistence exponent under serial dynamics. This result is a consequence of an exact, albeit non-trivial, mapping of the evolution of configurations of Potts spins under parallel dynamics to the dynamics of two decoupled reaction diffusion systems.
We calculate the partition function of the $q$-state Potts model on arbitrary-length cyclic ladder graphs of the square and triangular lattices, with a generalized external magnetic field that favors or disfavors a subset of spin values $\{1,...,s\}$ with $s \le q$. For the case of antiferromagnet spin-spin coupling, these provide exactly solved models that exhibit an onset of frustration and competing interactions in the context of a novel type of tensor-product $S_s \otimes S_{q-s}$ global symmetry, where $S_s$ is the permutation group on $s$ objects.
We present exact calculations of partition function $Z$ of the $q$-state Potts model with next-nearest-neighbor spin-spin couplings, both for the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic case, for arbitrary temperature, on $n$-vertex strip graphs of width $L_y=2$ of the square lattice with free, cyclic, and Möbius longitudinal boundary conditions. The free energy is calculated exactly for the infinite-length limit of these strip graphs and the thermodynamics is discussed. Considering the full generalization to arbitrary complex $q$ and temperature, we determine the singular locus ${\cal B}$ in the …
The exact solution of a general Z(4) gauge Potts model with a single and double plaquette representation of the action is found on a subspace of gauge-coupling parameters on the square and triangular lattices. The two Ising-type critical lines of a second-order phase transition for the model on a square lattice are found. For the model on a triangular lattice the two critical surfaces of an Ising-type and two nontrivial lines of a second-order phase transition with different critical behavior than on the critical surfaces are found. It is shown that a two dimensional (2D) general Z(4) gauge Po…
The Yang-Lee zeros of the Q-state Potts model are investigated in 1, 2 and 3 dimensions. Analytical results derived from the transfer matrix for the one-dimensional model reveal a systematic behavior of the locus of zeros as a function of Q. For 1<Q<2 the zeros in the complex $x=\exp(βH_q)$ plane lie inside the unit circle, while for Q>2 they lie outside the unit circle for finite temperature. In the special case Q=2 the zeros lie exactly on the unit circle as proved by Lee and Yang. In two and three dimensions the zeros are calculated numerically and behave in the same way. Results are also p…
We present exact results on the partition function of the $q$-state Potts model on various families of graphs $G$ in a generalized external magnetic field that favors or disfavors spin values in a subset $I_s = \{1,...,s\}$ of the total set of possible spin values, $Z(G,q,s,v,w)$, where $v$ and $w$ are temperature- and field-dependent Boltzmann variables. We remark on differences in thermodynamic behavior between our model with a generalized external magnetic field and the Potts model with a conventional magnetic field that favors or disfavors a single spin value. Exact results are also given …
We derive exact relations between the Potts model partition function, or equivalently the Tutte polynomial, for a network (graph) $G$ and a network obtained from $G$ by (i) by replacing each edge (i.e., bond) of $G$ by two or more edges joining the same vertices, and (ii) by inserting one or more degree-2 vertices on edges of $G$. These processes are called edge and vertex inflation, respectively. The physical effects of these edge and vertex inflations are discussed. We also present exact calculations of these polynomials for families of networks obtained via the operation (ii) on a subset of…
The properties of the partition function zeros in the complex temperature plane (Fisher zeros) and in the complex $Q$ plane (Potts zeros) are investigated for the $Q$-state Potts model in an arbitrary nonzero external magnetic field $H_q$, using the exact partition function of the one-dimensional model.
We present exact calculations of the partition function of the $q$-state Potts model on (i) open, (ii) cyclic, and (iii) Möbius strips of the honeycomb (brick) lattice of width $L_y=2$ and arbitrarily great length. In the infinite-length limit the thermodynamic properties are discussed. The continuous locus of singularities of the free energy is determined in the $q$ plane for fixed temperature and in the complex temperature plane for fixed $q$ values. We also give exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function (chromatic polynomial) and $W(q)$, the exponent of the ground-state …
The critical exponents of the four-state Potts model are directly derived from the exact expressions for the latent heat, the spontaneous magnetization, and the correlation length at the transition temperature of the model.
We present the exact solution of the 1D classical short-range Potts model with invisible states. Besides the $q$ states of the ordinary Potts model, this possesses $r$ additional states which contribute to the entropy, but not to the interaction energy. We determine the partition function, using the transfer-matrix method, in the general case of two ordering fields: $h_1$ acting on a visible state and $h_2$ on an invisible state. We analyse its zeros in the complex-temperature plane in the case that $h_1=0$. When ${\rm Im}\, h_2=0$ and $r\ge 0$, these zeros accumulate along a line that interse…
The $(2+1)$-dimensional $q=3$ Potts model was simulated with the exact diagonalization method. In the ordered phase, the elementary excitations (magnons) are attractive, forming a series of bound states in the low-energy spectrum. We investigate the low-lying spectrum through a dynamical susceptibility, which is readily tractable with the exact diagonalization method via the continued-fraction expansion. As a result, we estimate the series of (scaled) mass gaps, $m_{2,3,4}/m_1$ ($m_1$: single-magnon mass), in proximity to the transition point.
We present exact calculations of the Potts model partition function $Z(G,q,v)$ for arbitrary $q$ and temperature-like variable $v$ on $n$-vertex square-lattice strip graphs $G$ for a variety of transverse widths $L_t$ and for arbitrarily great length $L_\ell$, with free longitudinal boundary conditions and free and periodic transverse boundary conditions. These have the form $Z(G,q,v)=\sum_{j=1}^{N_{Z,G,λ}} c_{Z,G,j}(λ_{Z,G,j})^{L_\ell}$. We give general formulas for $N_{Z,G,j}$ and its specialization to $v=-1$ for arbitrary $L_t$ for both types of boundary conditions, as well as other general…
We present exact calculations of the Potts model partition function Z(G,q,v) for arbitrary q and temperature-like variable v on n-vertex strip graphs G of the triangular lattice for a variety of transverse widths equal to L vertices and for arbitrarily great length equal to m vertices, with free longitudinal boundary conditions and free and periodic transverse boundary conditions. These have the form Z(G,q,v)=\sum_{j=1}^{N_{Z,G,λ}} c_{Z,G,j}(λ_{Z,G,j})^{m-1}. We give general formulas for N_{Z,G,j} and its specialization to v=-1 for arbitrary L. The free energy is calculated exactly for the inf…
We report on numerical investigation of fractal properties of critical interfaces in two-dimensional Potts models. Algorithms for finding percolating interfaces of Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters, their external perimeters and interfaces of spin clusters are presented. Fractal dimensions are measured and compared to exact theoretical predictions.
A continuous 3-state Potts model with an analog of spherical constraints is proposed and is shown to have an exact solution in the case of infinite-ranged interactions. "Spherical" 3-state Potts spin glass model is solved using the known properties of a large random matrix. For this model the results are identical to those obtained by the replica approach for replica symmetric solution.
The value of the internal energy per spin is independent of the strip width for a certain class of spin systems on two dimensional infinite strips. It is verified that the Ising model on the kagome lattice belongs to this class through an exact transfer-matrix calculation of the internal energy for the two smallest widths. More generally, one can suggest an upper bound for the critical coupling strength $K_c(q)$ for the $q$-state Potts model from exact calculations of the internal energy for the two smallest strip widths. Combining this with the corresponding calculation for the dual lattice a…
We present exact calculations of the Potts model partition function $Z(G,q,v)$ for arbitrary $q$ and temperature-like variable $v$ on $n$-vertex strip graphs $G$ of the honeycomb lattice for a variety of transverse widths equal to $L_y$ vertices and for arbitrarily great length, with free longitudinal boundary conditions and free and periodic transverse boundary conditions. These partition functions have the form $Z(G,q,v)=\sum_{j=1}^{N_{Z,G,λ}} c_{Z,G,j}(λ_{Z,G,j})^m$, where $m$ denotes the number of repeated subgraphs in the longitudinal direction. We give general formulas for $N_{Z,G,j}$ fo…
The kinetics of the q-state Potts model in the zero temperature limit in one dimension is analyzed exactly through a generalization of the method of empty intervals, previously used for the analysis of diffusion-limited coalescence, A+A->A. In this new approach, the q-state Potts model, coalescence, and annihilation (A+A->0) all satisfy the same diffusion equation, and differ only in the imposed initial condition.
The $q$-state Potts model has stood at the frontier of research in statistical mechanics for many years. In the absence of a closed-form solution, much of the past efforts have focused on locating its critical manifold, trajectory in the parameter $\{q, e^J\}$ space where $J$ is the reduced interaction, along which the free energy is singular. However, except in isolated cases, antiferromagnetic (AF) models with $J<0$ have been largely neglected. In this paper we consider the Potts model with AF interactions focusing on deducing its critical manifold in exact and/or closed-form expressions. We…
The q-state ferromagnetic Potts model under a non-zero magnetic field coupled with the 0^th Potts state was investigated by an exact real-space renormalization group approach. The model was defined on a family of diamond hierarchical lattices of several fractal dimensions d_F. On these lattices, the renormalization group transformations became exact for such a model when a correlation coupling that singles out the 0^th Potts state was included in the Hamiltonian. The rich criticality presented by the model with q=3 and d_F=2 was fully analyzed. Apart from the Potts criticality for the zero fie…
In this paper, we propose a stochastic cellular automaton model of traffic flow extending two exactly solvable stochastic models, i.e., the asymmetric simple exclusion process and the zero range process. Moreover it is regarded as a stochastic extension of the optimal velocity model. In the fundamental diagram (flux-density diagram), our model exhibits several regions of density where more than one stable state coexists at the same density in spite of the stochastic nature of its dynamical rule. Moreover, we observe that two long-lived metastable states appear for a transitional period, and th…
Site energy of the five-state ferromagnetic Potts model is numerically calculated at the first-order transition temperature using corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) method. The calculated energy of the disordered phase $U^{+}$ is clearly different from that of the ordered phase $U^{-}$. The obtained latent heat $L = U^{-} - U^{+}$ is 0.027, which quantitatively agrees with the exact solution.
We show how to couple two critical Q-state Potts models to yield a new self-dual critical point. We also present strong evidence of a dense critical phase near this critical point when the Potts models are defined in their completely packed loop representations. In the continuum limit, the new critical point is described by an SU(2) coset conformal field theory, while in this limit of the the critical phase, the two loop models decouple. Using a combination of exact results and numerics, we also obtain the phase diagram in the presence of vacancies. We generalize these results to coupling two …
We present exact solutions for the zero-temperature partition function of the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet (equivalently, the chromatic polynomial $P$) on tube sections of the simple cubic lattice of fixed transverse size $L_x \times L_y$ and arbitrarily great length $L_z$, for sizes $L_x \times L_y = 2 \times 3$ and $2 \times 4$ and boundary conditions (a) $(FBC_x,FBC_y,FBC_z)$ and (b) $(PBC_x,FBC_y,FBC_z)$, where $FBC$ ($PBC$) denote free (periodic) boundary conditions. In the limit of infinite-length, $L_z \to \infty$, we calculate the resultant ground state degeneracy per site $W$ (= ex…
We present exact calculations of Potts model partition functions and the equivalent Tutte polynomials for polygon chain graphs with open and cyclic boundary conditions. Special cases of the results that yield flow and reliability polynomials are discussed. We also analyze special cases of the Tutte polynomials that determine various quantities of graph-theoretic interest.
We propose exact expressions for the conformal anomaly and for three critical exponents of the tricritical O(n) loop model as a function of n in the range $-2 \leq n \leq 3/2$. These findings are based on an analogy with known relations between Potts and O(n) models, and on an exact solution of a 'tri-tricritical' Potts model described in the literature. We verify the exact expressions for the tricritical O(n) model by means of a finite-size scaling analysis based on numerical transfer-matrix calculations.
We calculate the internal energy of the Potts model on the triangular lattice with two- and three-body interactions at the transition point satisfying certain conditions for coupling constants. The method is a duality transformation. Therefore we have to make assumptions on uniqueness of the transition point and that the transition is of second order. These assumptions have been verified to hold by numerical simulations for q=2, 3 and 4, and our results for the internal energy are expected to be exact in these cases.
We consider the Potts model in a magnetic field on an arbitrary graph $G$. Using a formula of F. Y. Wu for the partition function $Z$ of this model as a sum over spanning subgraphs of $G$, we prove some properties of $Z$ concerning factorization, monotonicity, and zeros. A generalization of the Tutte polynomial is presented that corresponds to this partition function. In this context we formulate and discuss two weighted graph-coloring problems. We also give a general structural result for $Z$ for cyclic strip graphs.
In a recent paper (arXiv:0911.2514), one of us (FYW) considered the Potts model and bond and site percolation on two general classes of two-dimensional lattices, the triangular-type and kagome-type lattices, and obtained closed-form expressions for the critical frontier with applications to various lattice models. For the triangular-type lattices Wu's result is exact, and for the kagome-type lattices Wu's expression is under a homogeneity assumption. The purpose of the present paper is two-fold: First, an essential step in Wu's analysis is the derivation of lattice-dependent constants $A, B, C…
We comment on the article by Fujimoto (1997 J. Phys. A: Math. Gen., Vol. 30, 3779), where the exact equilibrium crystal shape (ECS) in the critical Q-state Potts model on the square lattice was calculated, and its equivalence with ECS in the Ising model was established. We confirm these results, giving their alternative derivation applying the transformation properties of the one-particle dispersion relation in the six-vertex model. It is shown, that this dispersion relation is identical with that in the Ising model on the square lattice.
We generalize the classical one dimensional Potts model to the case where the symmetry group is a non-Abelian finite group. It turns out that this new model has a quantum nature in that its spectrum of energy eigenstates consists of entangled states. We determine the complete energy spectrum, i.e. the ground states and all the excited states with their degeneracy structure. We calculate the partition function by two different algebraic and combinatorial methods. We also determine the entanglement properties of its ground states.
We consider a Potts model diluted by fully frustrated Ising spins. The model corresponds to a fully frustrated Potts model with variables having an integer absolute value and a sign. This model presents precursor phenomena of a glass transition in the high-temperature region. We show that the onset of these phenomena can be related to a thermodynamic transition. Furthermore this transition can be mapped onto a percolation transition. We numerically study the phase diagram in 2 dimensions (2D) for this model with frustration and {\em without} disorder and we compare it to the phase diagram of $…
We derive an exact renormalization group recursion relation for the Loschmidt amplitude of the quantum $Q$-state clock model and the quantum $Q$-state Potts model in one dimension. The renormalization group flow is discussed in detail. The fixed-points of the renormalization group flow are found to be complex in general. These fixed-points control the dynamical phases of the two models, giving rise to non-analyticities in its Loschmidt rate function, for both the pure and the disordered system. For the quench protocols studied, dynamical quantum phase transitions are found to occur in the cloc…
We consider the general p-state Potts model on random networks with a given degree distribution (random Bethe lattices). We find the effect of the suppression of a first order phase transition in this model when the degree distribution of the network is fat-tailed, that is, in more precise terms, when the second moment of the distribution diverges. In this situation the transition is continuous and of infinite order, and size effect is anomalously strong. In particular, in the case of $p=1$, we arrive at the exact solution, which coincides with the known solution of the percolation problem on …
We consider the critical behavior of the random q-state Potts model in the large-q limit with different types of disorder leading to either the nonfrustrated random ferromagnet regime or the frustrated spin glass regime. The model is studied on the diamond hierarchical lattice for which the Migdal-Kadanoff real-space renormalization is exact. It is shown to have a ferromagnetic and a paramagnetic phase and the phase transition is controlled by four different fixed points. The state of the system is characterized by the distribution of the interface free energy P(I) which is shown to satisfy di…
We present exact calculations of the partition function $Z$ of the $q$-state Potts model and its generalization to real $q$, the random cluster model, for arbitrary temperature on $n$-vertex ladder graphs with free, cyclic, and Möbius longitudinal boundary conditions. These partition functions are equivalent to Tutte/Whitney polynomials for these graphs. The free energy is calculated exactly for the infinite-length limit of these ladder graphs and the thermodynamics is discussed.
We present exact calculations of the Potts model partition function $Z(G,q,v)$ for arbitrary $q$ and temperature-like variable $v$ on self-dual strip graphs $G$ of the square lattice with fixed width $L_y$ and arbitrarily great length $L_x$ with two types of boundary conditions. Letting $L_x \to \infty$, we compute the resultant free energy and complex-temperature phase diagram, including the locus ${\cal B}$ where the free energy is nonanalytic. Results are analyzed for widths $L_y=1,2,3$. We use these results to study the approach to the large-q limit of ${\cal B}$.
By relating the ground state of Temperley-Lieb hamiltonians to partition functions of 2D statistical mechanics systems on a half plane, and using a boundary Coulomb gas formalism, we obtain in closed form the valence bond entanglement entropy as well as the valence bond probability distribution in these ground states. We find in particular that for the XXX spin chain, the number N_c of valence bonds connecting a subsystem of size L to the outside goes, in the thermodynamic limit, as <N_c> = (4/pi^2) ln L, disproving a recent conjecture that this should be related with the von Neumann entropy, …
We present an exact renormalization group analysis of the Loschmidt amplitude of the quantum $N$-state Potts chain with random quench-disordered nearest neighbor bonds, under the extreme dynamical quantum quench. We prove that the phase transition of the Loschmidt rate function remains sharp in general. For typical bond distributions, the phase transition is found to be a linear-cusp, as in the pure model. For some special discrete bond distributions, however, the rate function exhibits logarithmic divergences. These singularities are due to the competition between the non-critical dynamical p…
We introduce the concept of stationary metastable states (SMS's) in the presence of another more stable state. The stationary nature allows us to study SMS's by using a restricted partition function formalism as advocated by Penrose and Lebowitz and requires continuing the free energy. The formalism ensures that SMS free energy satisfies the requirement of thermodynamic stability everywhere including T=0, but need not represent a pysically observable metastable state over the range where the entropy under continuation becomes negative. We consider a 1-dimensional m-component axis-spin model in…
We present an exact solution of the q-state Potts model on a class of generalized Sierpinski fractal lattices. The model is shown to possess an ordered phase at low temperatures and a continuous transition to the high temperature disordered phase at any q>=1. Multicriticality is observed in the presence of a symmetry-breaking field. Exact renormalization group analysis yields the phase diagram of the model and a complete set of critical exponents at various transitions.
The use of combinatorial optimization algorithms has contributed substantially to the major progress that has occurred in recent years in the understanding of the physics of disordered systems, such as the random-field Ising model. While for this system exact ground states can be computed efficiently in polynomial time, the related random-field Potts model is {\em NP\} hard computationally. While thus exact ground states cannot be computed for large systems in this case, approximation schemes based on graph cuts and related techniques can be used. Here we show how a combination of such methods…
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function of the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet on arbitrarily long strips of the square, triangular, and kagomé lattices with width $L_y=2$ or 3 vertices and with periodic longitudinal boundary conditions. From these, in the limit of infinite length, we obtain the exact ground-state entropy $S_0=k_B \ln W$. These results are of interest since this model exhibits nonzero ground state entropy $S_0 > 0$ for sufficiently large $q$ and hence is an exception to the third law of thermodynamics. We also include results for homeomorphic e…
In this paper we present exact calculations of the partition function $Z$ of the $q$-state Potts model and its generalization to real $q$, for arbitrary temperature on $n$-vertex strip graphs, of width $L_y=2$ and arbitrary length, of the triangular lattice with free, cyclic, and Möbius longitudinal boundary conditions. These partition functions are equivalent to Tutte/Whitney polynomials for these graphs. The free energy is calculated exactly for the infinite-length limit of the graphs, and the thermodynamics is discussed. Considering the full generalization to arbitrary complex $q$ and tempe…
