The search of high-order periodic orbits has been typically restricted to problems with symmetries that help to reduce the dimension of the search space. Well-known examples include reversible maps with symmetry lines. The present work proposes a new method to compute high-order periodic orbits in twist maps without the use of symmetries. The method is a combination of the parameterization method in Fourier space and a Newton-Gauss multiple shooting scheme. The parameterization method has been successfully used in the past to compute quasi-periodic invariant circles. However, this is the first time that this method is used in the context of periodic orbits. Numerical examples are presented showing the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method. The method is also applied to verify the renormalization prediction of the residues' convergence at criticality (extensively studied in reversible maps) in the relatively unexplored case of maps without symmetries.
In this paper, we prove a criterion for the local ergodicity of non-uniformly hyperbolic symplectic maps with singularities. Our result is an extension of a theorem of Liverani and Wojtkowski.
We prove that symplectic twist maps defined on the cotangent bundle of the d-dimensional torus that have no conjugate points are $C^0$ integrable, i.e. the cotangent bundle is continuously foliated by a family of invariant Lagrangian graphs.
The KAM (Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser) theorem guarantees the stability of quasi-periodic invariant tori by perturbation in some Hamiltonian systems. Michel Herman proved a similar result for quasi-periodic motions, with $k$-dimensional involutive manifolds in Hamiltonian systems with $n$ degrees of freedom $n \leq k < 2n $. In this paper, we extend this result to the case of a quasi-periodic motion on symplectic tori $k = 2n$.
We establish sharp bounds on the mixing rates of a class of two dimensional non-uniformly hyperbolic symplectic maps. This provides a primer on how to investigate such questions in a concrete example and, at the same time, it solves a controversy between previous rigorous results and numerical experiments.
We investigate a class of area preserving non-uniformly hyperbolic maps of the two torus. First we establish some results on the regularity of the invariant foliations, then we use this knowledge to estimate the rate of mixing.
We study the dynamics of a symplectic twist map without conjugate points. We show that in a neighborhood of a totally periodic Lagrangian manifold, there exists a large family of invariant Lagrangian tori on which the twist map is conjugated to a translation of non-resonant vector.
We construct a $C^2$ symplectic twist map f of the annulus that has an essential invariant curve C such that: - C is not differentiable; - the dynamics of f restricted to C is conjugated to the one of a Denjoy counter-example; - C is at the boundary of an instability zone for f.
We study bifurcations of cubic homoclinic tangencies in two-dimensional symplectic maps. We distinguish two types of cubic homoclinic tangencies, and each type gives different first return maps derived to diverse conservative cubic Hénon maps with quite different bifurcation diagrams. In this way, we establish the structure of bifurcations of periodic orbits in two parameter general unfoldings generalizing to the conservative case the results previously obtained for the dissipative case. We also consider the problem of 1:4 resonance for the conservative cubic Hénon maps.
We consider a sequences of symplectic twist maps corresponding to Frenkel Kontorova variational functional. For such a sequence without conjugate points we construct an invariant Lagrangian subbundle. Using the ideas by E.Hopf from Riemannian geometry we show that absence of conjugate points is a rare property for this class of maps.
We study iteration maps of recurrence relations arising from mutation periodic quivers of arbitrary period. Combining tools from cluster algebra theory and (pre)symplectic geometry, we show that these cluster iteration maps can be reduced to symplectic maps on a lower dimensional submanifold, provided the matrix representing the quiver is singular. The reduced iteration map is explicitly computed for several new periodic quivers.
This paper concentrates on optical Hamiltonian systems of $T*\T^n$, i.e. those for which $\Hpp$ is a positive definite matrix, and their relationship with symplectic twist maps. We present theorems of decomposition by symplectic twist maps and existence of periodic orbits for these systems. The novelty of these results resides in the fact that no explicit asymptotic condition is imposed on the system. We also present a theorem of suspension by Hamiltonian systems for the class of symplectic twist map that emerges in our study. Finally, we extend our results to manifolds of negative curvature.
We revisit the problem of introducing an a priori control for devices that can be modeled via a symplectic map in a neighborhood of an elliptic equilibrium. Using a technique based on Lie transform methods we produce a normal form algorithm that avoids the usual step of interpolating the map with a flow. The formal algorithm is completed with quantitative estimates that bring into evidence the asymptotic character of the normal form transformation. Then we perform an heuristic analysis of the dynamical behavior of the map using the invariant function for the normalized map. Finally, we discuss…
The goal of the article is to characterize the conservative homeomorphisms of a closed orientable surface $S$ of genus $\geq 2$, that have finitely many periodic points. By conservative, we mean a map with no wandering point. As a particular case, when $S$ is furnished with a symplectic form, we characterize the symplectic diffeomorphisms of $S$ with finitely many periodic points.
For Hamiltonian flows we establish the existence of periodic orbits on a sequence of level sets approaching a Bott-nondegenerate symplectic extremum of the Hamiltonian. As a consequence, we show that a charge on a compact manifold with a nondegenerate (i.e. symplectic) magnetic field has periodic orbits on a sequence of energy levels converging to zero.
We generalize symplectic convexity theorems for Hamiltonian actions with proper momentum maps to symplectic actions on orbifolds with mod-$Γ$ proper momentum maps.
We study quadratic, volume preserving diffeomorphisms whose inverse is also quadratic. Such maps generalize the Hénon area preserving map and the family of symplectic quadratic maps studied by Moser. In particular, we investigate a family of quadratic volume preserving maps in three space for which we find a normal form and study invariant sets. We also give an alternative proof of a theorem by Moser classifying quadratic symplectic maps.
We prove that a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\R^n$ with smooth boundary has a periodic billiard trajectory with at most $n+1$ bounce times and of length less than $C_n r(Ω)$, where $C_n$ is a positive constant which depends only on $n$, and $r(Ω)$ is the supremum of radius of balls in $Ω$. This result improves the result by C.Viterbo, which asserts that $Ω$ has a periodic billiard trajectory of length less than $C'_n \vol(Ω)^{1/n}$. To prove this result, we study symplectic capacity of Liouville domains, which is defined via symplectic homology.
There is a $C^1$-residual (Baire second class) subset $\mathcal{R}$ of symplectic diffeomorphisms on $2d$-dimensional manifold, $d\geq 1$, such that for every non-Anosov $f$ in $\mathcal{R}$ its topological entropy is lower bounded by the supremum of the Lyapunov exponents of their hyperbolic periodic points in the \emph{unbreakable central subbundle} (i.e., central direction with no dominated splitting) of $f$. The previous result deals with the fact that for $f$ in a residual set $\tilde{\mathcal{R}}$ of symplectic diffeomorphisms (containing $\mathcal{R}$) satisfies a trichotomy: or $f$ is …
We study Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of closed symplectic manifolds with non-contractible periodic orbits. In a variety of settings, we show that the presence of one non-contractible periodic orbit of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed toroidally monotone or toroidally negative monotone symplectic manifold implies the existence of infinitely many non-contractible periodic orbits in a specific collection of free homotopy classes. The main new ingredient in the proofs of these results is a filtration of Floer homology by the so-called augmented action. This action is independent of capping…
For a symplectic twist map, we prove that there is a choice of weak K.A.M. solutions that depend in a continuous way on the cohomology class. We thus obtain a continuous function $u(θ, c)$ in two variables: the angle $θ$ and the cohomology class $c$. As a result, we prove that the Aubry-Mather sets are contained in pseudographs that are vertically ordered by their rotation numbers. Then we characterize the $C^0$ integrable twist maps in terms of regularity of $u$ that allows to see $u$ as a generating function. We also obtain some results for the Lipschitz integrable twist maps. With an exampl…
We discuss $C^0$-continuous homogeneous quasi-morphisms on the identity component of the group of compactly supported symplectomorphisms of a symplectic manifold. Such quasi-morphisms extend to the $C^0$-closure of this group inside the homeomorphism group. We show that for standard symplectic balls of any dimension, as well as for compact oriented surfaces, other than the sphere, the space of such quasi-morphisms is infinite-dimensional. In the case of surfaces, we give a user-friendly topological characterization of such quasi-morphisms. We also present an application to Hofer's geometry on …
The study of fixed points is a classical subject in geometry and dynamics. If the circle acts in a Hamiltonian fashion on a compact symplectic manifold M, then it is classically known that there are at least 1 + dim(M)/2 fixed points; this follows from Morse theory for the momentum map of the action. In this paper we use Atiyah-Bott-Berline-Vergne (ABBV) localization in equivariant cohomology to prove that this conclusion also holds for symplectic circle actions with non-empty fixed sets, as long as the Chern class map is somewhere injective -- the Chern class map assigns to a fixed point the …
In the case of a linear symplectic map A of the 2d-torus, semiclassical measures are A-invariant probability measures associated to sequences of high energy quantum states. Our main result is an explicit lower bound on the entropy of any semiclassical measure of a given quantizable matrix A in Sp(2d,Z). In particular, our result implies that if A has an eigenvalue outside the unit circle, then a semiclassical measure cannot be carried by a closed orbit of A.
We prove that any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed symplectic manifold equipped with an atoroidal symplectic form has simple non-contractible periodic orbits of arbitrarily large period, provided that the diffeomorphism has a non-degenerate (or even isolated and homologically non-trivial) periodic orbit with non-zero homology class and the set of one-periodic orbits in that class is finite.
Chaotic transport in Hamiltonian systems is often restricted due to the presence of partial barriers, leading to a limited flux between different regions in phase phase. Typically, the most restrictive partial barrier in a 2D symplectic map is based on a cantorus, the Cantor set remnants of a broken 1D torus. For a 4D symplectic map we establish a partial barrier based on what we call a cantorus-NHIM, a normally hyperbolic invariant manifold (NHIM) with the structure of a cantorus. Using a flux formula, we determine the global 4D flux across a partial barrier based on a cantorus-NHIM by approx…
The regular structures of a generic 4D symplectic map with a mixed phase space are organized by one-parameter families of elliptic 1D-tori. Such families show prominent bends, gaps, and new branches. We explain these features in terms of bifurcations of the families when crossing a resonance. For these bifurcations no external parameter has to be varied. Instead, the longitudinal frequency, which varies along the family, plays the role of the bifurcation parameter. As an example we study two coupled standard maps by visualizing the elliptic and hyperbolic 1D-tori in a 3D phase-space slice, loc…
In the present paper we study two sequences of real numbers associated to a symplectic diffeomorphism: the uniform norm of the differential of its n-th iteration and the word length of its n-th iteration. In the latter case we assume that our diffeomorphism lies in a finitely generated group of symplectic diffeomorphisms. We find lower bounds on the growth rates of these sequences in a number of situations. These bounds depend on the symplectic geometry of the manifold rather than on the specific choice of a diffeomorphism. They are obtained by using recent results of Schwarz on Floer homology…
In this paper, we firstly generalize the Brunn-Minkowski type inequality for Ekeland-Hofer-Zehnder symplectic capacity of bounded convex domains established by Artstein-Avidan-Ostrover in 2008 to extended symplectic capacities of bounded convex domains constructed by authors based on a class of Hamiltonian non-periodic boundary value problems recently. Then we introduce a class of non-periodic billiards in convex domains, and for them we prove some corresponding results to those for periodic billiards in convex domains obtained by Artstein-Avidan-Ostrover in 2012.
We show that the existence of one simple closed Reeb orbit of a particular type (a symplectically degenerate maximum) forces the Reeb flow to have infinitely many periodic orbits. We use this result to give a different proof of a recent theorem of Cristofaro-Gardiner and Hutchings asserting that every Reeb flow on the standard contact three-sphere has at least two periodic orbits. Our methods are based on adapting the machinery originally developed for proving the Hamiltonian Conley conjecture to the contact setting.
The main theme of this paper is a relative version of the almost existence theorem for periodic orbits of autonomous Hamiltonian systems. We show that almost all low levels of a function on a geometrically bounded symplectically aspherical manifold carry contractible periodic orbits of the Hamiltonian flow, provided that the function attains its minimum along a closed symplectic submanifold. As an immediate consequence, we obtain the existence of contractible periodic orbits on almost all low energy levels for twisted geodesic flows with symplectic magnetic field. We give examples of functions…
In this paper we establish the existence of periodic orbits belonging to any $σ$-atoroidal free homotopy class for Hamiltonian systems in the twisted disc bundle, provided that the compactly supported time-dependent Hamiltonian function is sufficiently large over the zero section and the magnitude of the weakly exact $2$-form $σ$ admitting a primitive with at most linear growth on the universal cover is sufficiently small. The proof relies on showing the invariance of Floer homology under symplectic deformations and on the computation of Floer homology for the cotangent bundle endowed with its…
According to the Arnold conjectures and Floer's proofs, there are non-trivial lower bounds for the number of periodic solutions of Hamiltonian differential equations on a closed symplectic manifold whose symplectic form vanishes on spheres. We use an iterated graph construction and Lagrangian Floer homology to show that these lower bounds also hold for certain Hamiltonian delay equations.
For the case of generic 4D symplectic maps with a mixed phase space we investigate the global organization of regular tori. For this we compute elliptic 1-tori of two coupled standard maps and display them in a 3D phase-space slice. This visualizes how all regular 2-tori are organized around a skeleton of elliptic 1-tori in the 4D phase space. The 1-tori occur in two types of one-parameter families: (a) Lyapunov families emanating from elliptic-elliptic periodic orbits, which are observed to exist even far away from them and beyond major resonance gaps, and (b) families originating from rank-1…
We consider the learning and prediction of nonlinear time series generated by a latent symplectic map. A special case is (not necessarily separable) Hamiltonian systems, whose solution flows give such symplectic maps. For this special case, both generic approaches based on learning the vector field of the latent ODE and specialized approaches based on learning the Hamiltonian that generates the vector field exist. Our method, however, is different as it does not rely on the vector field nor assume its existence; instead, it directly learns the symplectic evolution map in discrete time. Moreove…
Since Moser's seminal work it is well known that the invariant curves of smooth nearly integrable twist maps of the cylinder with Diophantine rotation number are preserved under perturbation. In this paper we show that, in the analytic class, the result extends to Bryuno rotation numbers. First, we will show that the series expansion for the invariant curves in powers of the perturbation parameter can be formally defined, then we shall prove that the series converges absolutely in a neighbourhood of the origin. This will be achieved using multiscale analysis and renormalisation group technique…
We generalize the Weinstein-Moser theorem on the existence of nonlinear normal modes (i.e., periodic orbits) near an equilibrium in a Hamiltonian system to a theorem on the existence of relative periodic orbits near a relative equilibrium in a Hamiltonian system with continuous symmetries. More specifically we significantly improve a result proved earlier jointly with Tokieda (math.SG/9901102): we remove a technical hypothesis which amounted to an assumption that the symmetry group is a torus.
We prove the existence of infinitely many periodic points of symplectomorphisms isotopic to the identity if they admit at least one (non-contractible) hyperbolic periodic orbit and satisfy some condition on its flux. The obtained periodic points correspond to periodic orbits whose free homotopy classes are formed by iterations of the hyperbolic periodic orbit. Our result is proved for a certain class of closed symplectic manifolds and the main tool we use is a variation of Floer theory for non-contractible periodic orbits and symplectomorphisms, the Floer-Novikov theory. For a certain class of…
We show that if K: P \to R is an autonomous Hamiltonian on a symplectic manifold (P,Ω) which attains 0 as a Morse-Bott nondegenerate minimum along a symplectic submanifold M, and if c_1(TP)|_M vanishes in real cohomology, then the Hamiltonian flow of K has contractible periodic orbits with bounded period on all sufficiently small energy levels. As a special case, if the geodesic flow on the cotangent bundle of M is twisted by a symplectic magnetic field form, then the resulting flow has contractible periodic orbits on all low energy levels. These results were proven by Ginzburg and Gürel when …
Several new mutation-periodic quivers of period higher than 1 are introduced as well as the associated discrete dynamical systems. The reduction of these systems is developed using either a presymplectic or a Poisson approach. The presymplectic approach leads to a reduced system whose iteration map is symplectic with respect to a log symplectic form. In the Poisson approach we build a Poisson structure invariant under the iteration map, leading to a reduced system whose variables are the Casimirs of such structure.
A new fast multiple-shooting method for computing periodic orbits in symplectic maps leveraging simultaneous Floquet vector computation to avoid large linear systems
We generalize the concept of global moment maps to local moment maps, whose different branches are labelled by the elements of the fundamental group of the underlying symplectic manifold. These branches can be smoothly glued together by employing fundamental-group-valued \u Cech cocycles on the phase space. In the course of this work we prove a couple of theorems on the liftability of group actions to symplectic covering spaces, and examine the possible extensions of the original group by the fundamental group of the quotient phase space. It it shown how the splitting of multiplets, this being…
