We show that the (torsional) nonrelativistic string sigma models on $ R\times S^2 $ can be mapped into \emph{deformed} Rosochatius like integrable models in one dimension. We also explore the associated Hamiltonian constrained structure by introducing appropriate Dirac brackets. These results show some solid evidence of the underlying integrable structure in the nonrelativistic sector of the gauge/string duality.
We propose the action for the nonrelativistic string invariant under general coordinate transformations on the string worldsheet. The Hamiltonian formulation for the nonrelativistic string is given. Particular solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations are found in the time gauge.
Nonrelativistic open string theory is defined by a worldsheet theory that produces a Galilean invariant string spectrum and is described at low energies by a nonrelativistic Yang-Mills theory. We study T-duality transformations in the path integral for the sigma model that describes nonrelativistic open string theory coupled to an arbitrary closed string background, described by a string Newton-Cartan geometry, Kalb-Ramond, and dilaton field. We prove that T-duality transformations map nonrelativistic open string theory to relativistic and noncommutative open string theory in the discrete ligh…
We study worldvolume actions for D-branes coupled to the worldvolume U(1) gauge field and Ramond-Ramond (RR) potentials in nonrelativistic string theory. This theory is a self-contained corner of relativistic string theory and has a string spectrum with a Galilean-invariant dispersion relation. We therefore refer to such D-branes in nonrelativistic string theory as nonrelativistic D-branes. We focus on the bosonic fields in spacetime and also couple the D-branes to general closed string geometry, Kalb-Ramond, and dilaton background fields. We dualize nonrelativistic D-branes by performing a du…
We continue the study of nonrelativistic string theory in background fields. Nonrelativistic string theory is described by a nonlinear sigma model that maps a relativistic worldsheet to a non-Lorentzian and non-Riemannian target space geometry, which is known to be string Newton-Cartan geometry. We develop the covariant background field method in this non-Riemannian geometry. We apply this background field method to compute the beta-functions of the nonlinear sigma model that describes nonrelativistic string theory on a string Newton-Cartan geometry background, in presence of a Kalb-Ramond two…
This paper is devoted to the canonical analysis of non-linear sigma model that describes motion of non-relativistic string on stringy Newton-Cartan background. We determine structure of constraints of this string and compare resulting Hamiltonian with previous proposal of non-relativistic string on Newton-Cartan background.
We formulate the stringy nonrelativistic limits of the flat space and AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ string as coset models, based on the string Bargmann and extended string Newton-Hooke algebras respectively. Our construction mimics the typical relativistic one, but differs in several interesting ways. Using our coset formulation we give a Lax representation of the equations of motion of both models.
We continue our study of the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) factorization of winding string amplitudes. In a toroidal compactification, amplitudes for winding closed string states factorize into products of amplitudes for open strings ending on an array of D-branes localized in the compactified directions; the specific D-brane configuration is determined by the closed string data. In this paper, we study a zero Regge slope limit of the KLT relations between winding string amplitudes. Such a limit of string theory requires a critically tuned Kalb-Ramond field in a compact direction, and leads to a se…
The classical and quantum worldsheet theory describing nonrelativistic open string theory in an arbitrary nonrelativistic open and closed string background is constructed. We show that the low energy dynamics of open strings ending on n coincident D-branes in flat spacetime is described by a Galilean invariant U(n) Yang-Mills theory. We also study nonrelativistic open string excitations with winding number and demonstrate that their dynamics can be encoded into a local gauge theory in one higher dimension. By demanding conformal invariance of the boundary couplings, the nonlinear equations of …
We explore nonrelativistic (NR) pulsating string configurations over torsion Newton-Cartan (TNC) geometry having topology $ R \times S^2 $ and check the corresponding analytic integrability criteria following Kovacic's algorithm. In the first part we consider pulsating strings propagating over TNC geometry whose world-sheet theory is described by relativistic CFTs. We compute conserved charges associated with the $ 2D $ sigma model and show that the classical phase space corresponding to these NR pulsating string configurations is Liouvillian integrable. Finally, we consider nonrelativisitc sc…
We show nonrelativistic (NR) giant magnon dispersion relations by probing the torsional Newton Cartan (TNC) geometry with (semi)classical nonrelativistic rigidly rotating strings. We construct NR sigma models over $ R \times S^2 $ and consider two specific limiting cases those are of particular interest. Both of these limiting conditions give rise to what we identify as the \emph{small} momentum limit of the giant magnon dispersion relation in the dual SMT at \emph{strong} coupling. We further generalize our results in the presence of background NS-NS fluxes. Our analysis reveals that unlike i…
Nonrelativistic string theory is a self-contained corner of string theory, with its string spectrum enjoying a Galilean-invariant dispersion relation. This theory is unitary and ultraviolet complete, and can be studied from first principles. In these notes, we focus on the bosonic closed string sector. In curved spacetime, nonrelativistic string theory is defined by a renormalizable quantum nonlinear sigma model in background fields, following certain symmetry principles that disallow any deformation towards relativistic string theory. We review previous proposals of such symmetry principles a…
We construct nonrelativistic spinning string solutions corresponding to $ SU(1,2|3) $ Spin-Matrix theory (SMT) limit of strings in $ AdS_5 \times S^5 $. Considering various nonrelativistic spinning string configurations both in $ AdS_5 $ as well as $ S^5 $ we obtain corresponding dispersion relations in the strong coupling regime of SMT where the strong coupling ($ \sim \sqrt{\mathfrak{g}} $) corrections near the BPS bound have been estimated in the slow spinning limit of strings in $ AdS_5 $. We generalize our results explicitly by constructing three spin folded string configurations that has…
Nonrelativistic string theory is a unitary, ultraviolet finite quantum gravity theory with a nonrelativistic string spectrum. The vertex operators of the worldsheet theory determine the spacetime geometry of nonrelativistic string theory, known as the string Newton-Cartan geometry. We compute the Weyl anomaly of the nonrelativistic string worldsheet sigma model describing strings propagating in a string Newton-Cartan geometry, Kalb-Ramond and dilaton background. We derive the equations of motion that dictate the backgrounds on which nonrelativistic string theory can be consistently defined qua…
We carry out the formulation of nonrelativistic (NR) F-string theory for $ \mathcal{N}=2 $ Gaiotto-Maldacena class of geometries in type IIA supergravity. Considering the NS-NS sector, we reduce the type IIA theory into the NR sigma models those are formulated over the nonrelativistic target space geometries known as the torsional String Newton-Cartan (TSNC) backgrounds. Using these TSNC data, we write down the sigma model action and explore several properties in the semiclassical limit. In particular, we carry out the \emph{canonical} analysis of the T-duality transformation rules in TSNC bac…
We review recent developments on nonrelativistic string theory. In flat spacetime, the theory is defined by a two-dimensional relativistic quantum field theory with nonrelativistic global symmetries acting on the worldsheet fields. This theory arises as a self-contained corner of relativistic string theory. It has a string spectrum with a Galilean dispersion relation, and a spacetime S-matrix with nonrelativistic symmetry. This string theory also gives a unitary and ultraviolet complete framework that connects different corners of string theory, including matrix string theory and noncommutativ…
Nonrelativistic string theory in flat spacetime is described by a two-dimensional quantum field theory with a nonrelativistic global symmetry acting on the worldsheet fields. Nonrelativistic string theory is unitary, ultraviolet complete and has a string spectrum and spacetime S-matrix enjoying nonrelativistic symmetry. The worldsheet theory of nonrelativistic string theory is coupled to a curved spacetime background and to a Kalb-Ramond two-form and dilaton field. The appropriate spacetime geometry for nonrelativistic string theory is dubbed string Newton-Cartan geometry, which is distinct fr…
We consider the geometric entropy of free nonrelativistic fermions in two dimensions and show that it is ultraviolet finite for finite fermi energies, but divergent in the infrared. In terms of the corresponding collective field theory this is a {\em nonperturbative} effect and is related to the soft behaviour of the usual thermodynamic entropy at high temperatures. We then show that thermodynamic entropy of the singlet sector of the one dimensional matrix model at high temperatures is governed by nonperturbative effects of the underlying string theory. In the high temperature limit the ``exac…
We review and extend high energy string BCJ relations in both the fixed angle and Regge regimes. We then give an explicit proof of four point string BCJ relations for all energy. This calculation provides an alternative proof of the one based on monodromy of integration in string amplitude calculation. In addition, we calculate both s-t and t-u channel nonrelativistic low energy string scattering amplitudes of three tachyons and one leading trojectory string state at arbitrary mass levels. We discover that the mass and spin dependent nonrelativistic string BCJ relations can be expressed in ter…
Nonrelativistic string theory is described by a sigma model with a relativistic worldsheet and a nonrelativistic target spacetime geometry, that is called string Newton-Cartan geometry. In this paper we obtain string Newton-Cartan geometry as a limit of the Riemannian geometry of General Relativity with a fluxless two-form field. We then apply the same limit to relativistic string theory in curved background fields and show that it leads to nonrelativistic string theory in a string Newton-Cartan geometry coupled to a Kalb-Ramond and dilaton field background. Finally, we use our limiting proced…
The nonrelativistic bosonic string theory in a curved manifold is formulated here using gauging of symmetry approach ( Galilean Gauge theory ) . The corresponding model in flat space has some global symmetries . By localizing these symmetries as per Galilean Gauge theory , the action for the nonrelativistic string interacting with gravity is obtained. A canonical analysis of the model has been performed which demonstrate that the transformations of the basic field variables under gauge transformations in phase space are equivalent to the diffeomorphism parameters by an exact mapping. Thus comp…
A model for planar phenomena introduced by Jackiw and Pi and described by a Lagrangian including a Chern-Simons term is considered. The associated equations of motion, among which a 2+1 gauged nonlinear Schrödinger equation, are rewritten into a gauge independent form involving the modulus of the matter field. Application of a Painlevé analysis, as adapted to partial differential equations by Weiss, Tabor and Carnevale, shows up resonance values that are all integer. However, compatibility conditions need be considered which cannot be satisfied consistently in general. Such a result suggests t…
A new approach to the study of nonrelativistic bosonic string in flat space time is introduced, basing on a holistic hamiltonian analysis of the minimal action for the string. This leads to a structurally new form of the action which is, however, equivalent to the known results since, under appropriate limits, it interpolates between the minimal action (Nambu Goto type) where the string metric is taken to be that induced by the embedding and the Polyakov type of action where the world sheet metric components are independent fields. The equivalence among different actions is established by a de…
We further develop the string $1/c^2$ expansion of closed bosonic string theory, where $c$ is the speed of light. The expansion will be performed up to and including the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). We show that the next-to-leading order (NLO) theory is equal to the Gomis--Ooguri string, generalised to a curved target space, provided the target space geometry admits a certain class of co-dimension-2 foliations. We compute the energy of the string up to NNLO for a flat target space with a circle that must be wound by the string, and we show that it agrees with the $1/c^2$ expansion of …
The present Letter derives multispin nonrelativistic magnon spectrum considering various near BPS corners within $ SU(1,2|3) $ Spin-Matrix theory (SMT) limit of strings on $ AdS_5 \times S^5 $. In particular, we focus on some typical rotating string solutions those correspond to two spin as well as three spin configurations in the bulk and identify the associated nonrelativistic magnon like excitations in these models.
We explore nonrelativistic limits of $\mathcal{N}=1$ quiver gauge theories in 5d. The stringy counterpart of these SCFTs is characterised by torsional string Newton-Cartan (TSNC) sigma models those are defined over non-Lorentzian manifolds. We further show that under transverse T-duality, these TSNC sigma models are mapped into another new class of nonrelativistic sigma models those are defined over a T-dual TSNC background. Considering nonrelativistic limits of various field theory observables in a holographic set up, we further estimate corresponding entities in the TSNC limit of $ \mathcal{…
We present a string theory realization for the correspondence between quantum integrable models and supersymmetric gauge theories. The quantization results from summing the effects of fundamental strings winding around a compact direction. We discuss the examples of the XXZ gauge/Bethe correspondence and five-dimensional Ω--deformed SYM on M x S^1.
We discuss different formulations and approaches to string theory and $ 2d$ quantum gravity. The generic idea to get a unique description of {\it many} different string vacua altogether is demonstrated on the examples in $ 2d$ conformal, topological and matrix formulations. The last one naturally brings us to the appearance of classical integrable systems in string theory. Physical meaning of the appearing structures is discussed and some attempts to find directions of possible generalizations to ``higher-dimensional" models are made. We also speculate on the possible appearence of quantum int…
The shape and dynamics of the nonrelativistic gauge vortex string in the parity-broken media is considered, upon reducing the problem to finding the extremum of the Abelian Higgs model effective action with the fixed B-type helicity of the gauge field. It is shown that in contrast with the case of the fixed A-type helicity, the static solution of the Ginzburg-Landau energy functional in the London limit is the helix with the specific relation between the curvature and torsion of the vortex line depending on the strength of the space parity violating contribution of the Lifshitz invariant. A no…
In these notes we review the method to construct integrable deformations of the compactified c=1 bosonic string theory by primary fields (momentum or winding modes), developed recently in collaboration with S. Alexandrov and V. Kazakov. The method is based on the formulation of the string theory as a matrix model. The flows generated by either momentum or winding modes (but not both) are integrable and satisfy the Toda lattice hierarchy.
We consider Penrose limits of the Klebanov-Strassler and Maldacena-Nunez holographic duals to N =1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills. By focusing in on the IR region we obtain exactly solvable string theory models. These represent the nonrelativistic motion and low-lying excitations of heavy hadrons with mass proportional to a large global charge. We argue that these hadrons, both physically and mathematically, take the form of heavy nonrelativistic strings; we term them "annulons." A simple toy model of a string boosted along a compact circle allows us considerable insight into their properties. We a…
We discuss an integrable model of string on AdS$_3$xS$^3$xT$^4$ in a thermodynamical bath. We show that scattering of the excitations above equilibrium states has some novel features. Thermodynamics points to interesting deformation of the original model for which we discuss finite size effect through mirror TBA equations.
This contribution is based on a talk given by the author at the "Dualities and Generalized Geometries" session of the Corfu Summer Institute 2018 workshops. We overview the results of [1], focusing our attention on integrable $λ$-deformations of WZW models with boundaries.
We review the status of integrable models from the point of view of their dynamics and integrability conditions. Some integrable models are discussed in detail. We comment on the use it is made of them in string theory. We also discuss the Bethe Ansatz solution of the SO(6) symmetric Hamiltonian with SO(6) boundary. This work is especially prepared for the seventieth anniversaries of André Swieca (in memoriam) and Roland Köberle.
The effective action of N=2 Yang-Mills theory with adjoint matter is shown to be governed by an integrable spin model with spectral parameter on an elliptic curve. We sketch a route to deriving this effective dynamics from the underlying Yang-Mills theory. Natural generalizations of this structure to all N=2 models, and to string theory, are suggested.
We put forward an idea that the boundary entropy associated with integrable massless flow of thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) is identified with tachyon action of boundary string field theory. We show that the temperature parameterizing a massless flow in the TBA formalism can be identified with tachyon energy for the classical action at least near the ultraviolet fixed point, i.e. the open string vacuum.
We consider the three-parameter integrable deformation of the $AdS_3\times S^3$ superstring background constructed in arXiv:1811.00453. Working on the string worldsheet in uniform lightcone gauge, we find the tree-level bosonic S matrix of the model and study some of its limits.
Building on arXiv:1804.01998 we investigate the integrable structure of the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model describing closed strings on $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$. Using the recently-proposed integrable S matrix we show analytically that all wrapping corrections cancel and that the theory has a natural spin-chain interpretation. We construct the integrable spin chain and discuss its relation with the WZW description. Finally we compute the spin-chain spectrum in closed form and show that it matches the WZW prediction on the nose.
The exact effective field equations of motion, corresponding to the perturbative mixed theory of open and closed (2,2) world-sheet supersymmetric strings, are investigated. It is shown that they are only integrable in the case of an abelian gauge group. The gravitational equations are then stationary with respect to the Born-Infeld-type effective action.
Non-relativistic ABJM theory is defined by Galilean limit of mass-deformed N=6 Chern-Simons theory. Holographic string theory dual to the theory is not known yet. To understand features candidate gravity dual might exhibit, we examine local and nonlocal physical observables and their correlations in the non-relativistic ABJM theory. We show that gauge invariant local observables correspond to zero-norm states and that correlation functions among them are trivial. We also show that a particular class of nonlocal observables, Wilson loops, are topological in the sense that their correlation func…
All symmetric space $AdS_n$ solutions of type II supergravity have recently been found for $n>2$. For the supersymmetric solutions (and their T-duals) it is known that the Green-Schwarz string is classically integrable. We complete the classification by ruling out integrability for the remaining non-supersymmetric solutions. This is achieved by showing that tree-level scattering on the worldsheet of a GKP or BMN string fails to factorize for these cases.
The integrable structure of open--closed string theories in the $(p,q)$ conformal minimal model backgrounds is presented. The relation between the $τ$--function of the closed string theory and that of the open--closed string theory is uncovered. The resulting description of the open--closed string theory is shown to fit very naturally into the framework of the $sl(q,{\rm C})$ KdV hierarchies. In particular, the twisted bosons which underlie and organise the structure of the closed string theory play a similar role here and may be employed to derive loop equations and correlation function recur…
Many Ramond-Ramond backgrounds which arise in the AdS/CFT correspondence are described by integrable sigma-models. The equations of motion for classical spinning strings in these backgrounds are exactly solvable by finite-gap integration techniques. We review the finite-gap integral equations and algebraic curves for coset sigma-models, and then apply the results to the AdS(d+1) backgrounds with d=4,3,2,1.
We use the reduction of the string dynamics on AdS_4 x CP^3 to the Neumann-Rosochatius integrable system. All constraints can be expressed simply in terms of a few parameters. We analyze the giant magnon and single spike solutions on R_t x CP^3 with two angular momenta in detail and find the energy-charge relations. The finite-size effects of the giant magnon and single spike solutions are analyzed.
It was suggested in hep-th/0002106, that semiclassically, a partition function of a string theory in the 5 dimensional constant negative curvature space with a boundary condition at the absolute satisfy the loop equation with respect to varying the boundary condition, and thus the partition function of the string gives the expectation value of a Wilson loop in the 4 dimensional QCD. In the paper, we present the geometrical framework, which reveals that the equations of motion of such string theory are integrable, in the sense that they can be written via a Lax pair with a spectral parameter. W…
We study the two-matrix model which represents the sum over closed and open random surfaces coupled to an Ising Model. The boundary conditions are characterized by the fact that the Ising spins sitting at the vertices of the boundaries are all in the same state. We obtain the string equation and discuss the results. (No change in physics, only some misprints are corrected)
This is mainly a brief review of some key achievements in a `hot'' area of theoretical and mathematical physics. The principal aim is to outline the basic structures underlying {\em integrable} quantum field theory models with {\em infinite-dimensional} symmetry groups which display a radically new type of {\em quantum group} symmetries. Certain particular aspects are elaborated upon with some detail: integrable systems of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili type and their reductions appearing in matrix models of strings; Hamiltonian approach to Lie-Poisson symmetries; quantum field theory approach to two-…
We investigate the integrable structures in an N=2 superconfomal Sp(N) Yang-Mills theory with matter, which is dual to an open+closed string system. We restrict ourselves to the BMN operators that correspond to free string states. In the closed string sector, an integrable structure is inherited from its parent theory, N=4 SYM. For the open string sector, the planar one-loop mixing matrix for gauge invariant holomorphic operators is identified with the Hamiltonian of an integrable SU(3) open spin chain. Using the K-matrix formalism we identify the integrable open-chain boundary conditions that…
By starting from the modified Maxwell theory coupled to gravity, the arising of geometric quantum phases in the relativistic and nonrelativistic quantum dynamics of a Dirac neutral particle from the effects of the violation of the Lorentz symmetry in the cosmic string spacetime is investigated. It is shown that the Dirac equation can be written in terms of an effective metric and a relativistic geometric phase stems from the topology of the cosmic string spacetime and the Lorentz symmetry breaking effects. Further, the nonrelativistic limit of the Dirac equation is discussed and it is shown th…
In this letter we discuss the relation of four-dimensional, $N=2$ supersymmetric string backgrounds to integrable models. In particular we show that non-Kählerian gravitational backgrounds with one $U(1)$ isometry plus non-trivial antisymmetric tensor and dilaton fields arise as the solutions of the Liouville equation or, for the case of vanishing central charge deficit, as the solutions of the continual Toda equation. When performing an Abelian duality transformation, a particular class of solutions of the continual Toda equation leads to the well-known gravitational Eguchi-Hanson instanton b…
We claim that the dynamics of noncritical string theories in two dimensions is related to an underlying noncritical version of M-theory, which we define in terms of a double-scaled nonrelativistic Fermi liquid in 2+1 dimensions. After reproducing Type 0A and 0B string theories as solutions, we study the natural M-theory vacuum. The vacuum energy of this solution can be evaluated exactly, its form suggesting a duality to the Debye model of phonons in a melting solid, and a possible topological nature of the theory. The physical spacetime is emergent in this theory, only for states that admit a …
After reviewing the $β$-function equations for consistent string backgrounds in the $σ$-model approach, including metric and antisymmetric tensor, dilaton and tachyon potential, we apply this formalism to WZW models. We particularly emphasize the case where the WZW model is perturbed by an integrable marginal tachyon potential operator leading to the non-abelian Toda theories. Already in the simplest such theory, there is a large non-linear and non-local chiral algebra that extends the Virasoro algebra. This theory is shown to have two formulations, one being a classical reduction of the other…
We study integrable deformations of AdS/CFT by focusing upon three kinds of warped AdS_3 geometries, 1) space-like warped AdS_3, 2) time-like warped AdS_3 and 3) null warped AdS_3. These geometries are embedded into type IIB supergravity solutions and are regarded as consistent string backgrounds. By restricting the classical motion of strings on the warped AdS_3xS^1 subspace, the Landau-Lifshitz sigma models are derived by taking the fast-moving limit. The first two warped AdS_3 spaces correspond to anisotropic deformations of the sl(2) spin chain and the last one to Jordanian deformations. A…
Instanton matrix models (IMM) for two dimensional string theories are obtained from the matrix quantum mechanics (MQM) of the T-dual theory. In this paper we study the connection between the IMM and MQM, which amounts to understand T-duality from the viewpoint of matrix models. We show that type 0A and type 0B matrix models perturbed by purely closed string momentum modes (or purely winding modes) have the integrable structure of Toda hierarchies, extending the well known results for c=1 string. In particular, we show that type 0A(0B) MQM perturbed by momentum modes has the same integrable str…
There is a close relation between duality in $N=2$ SUSY gauge theories and integrable models. In particular, the quantum moduli space of vacua of $N=2$ SUSY $SU(3)$ gauge theories coupled to two flavors of massless quarks in the fundamental representation can be related to the spectral curve of the Goryachev-Chaplygin top. Generalizing this to the cases with {\it massive} quarks, and $N_f = 0,1,2$, we find a corresponding integrable system in seven dimensional phase space where a hyperelliptic curve appears in the Painlevé test. To understand the stringy origin of the integrability of these th…
