Entanglement is a central subject in quantum mechanics. Due to its genuine relativistic behavior and fundamental nature, high-energy colliders are attractive systems for the experimental study of fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics. We propose the detection of entanglement between the spins of top-antitop-quark pairs at the LHC, representing the first proposal of entanglement detection in a pair of quarks, and also the entanglement observation at the highest energy scale so far. We show that entanglement can be observed by direct measurement of the angular separation between the leptons arising from the decay of the top-antitop pair. The detection can be achieved with high statistical significance, using the current data recorded during Run 2 at the LHC. In addition, we develop a simple protocol for the quantum tomography of the top-antitop pair. This experimental technique reconstructs the quantum state of the system, providing a new experimental tool to test theoretical predictions. Our work explicitly implements canonical experimental techniques in quantum information in a two-qubit high-energy system, paving the way to use high-energy colliders to also study quantum information aspects.
Entanglement in high energy and and nuclear reactions is receiving great attention. A proper description of these reactions uses density matrices, and the express of entanglement in terms of {\it separability}. Quantum tomography bypasses field-theoretic formalism to determine density matrices in terms of experimental observables. We review recent work applying quantum tomography to practical experimental data analysis. We discuss the relation between separability, as defined in quantum information science, and factorization, as defined in high energy physics. When factorization applies, it co…
Multipartite entanglement has been widely regarded as key resources in distributed quantum computing, for instance, multi-party cryptography, measurement based quantum computing, quantum algorithms. It also plays a fundamental role in quantum phase transitions, even responsible for transport efficiency in biological systems. Certifying multipartite entanglement is generally a fundamental task. Since an $N$ qubit state is parameterized by $4^N-1$ real numbers, one is interested to design a measurement setup that reveals multipartite entanglement with as little effort as possible, at least witho…
Quantum entangled states have shown distinguished features beyond any classical state. Many methods like quantum state tomography have been presented to verify entanglement. In this work, we aim to identify unknown entanglements with partial information of the state space by developing a nonlinear entanglement witness. The witness consists of a generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-like paradox expressed by Pauli observables, and a nonlinear inequality expressed by density matrix elements. First, we verify unknown bipartite entanglements and study the robustness of entanglement witnesses aga…
We present the prospects of detecting quantum entanglement and the violation of Bell inequalities in $t\bar{t}$ events at the LHC. We introduce a unique set of observables suitable for both measurements, and then perform the corresponding analyses using simulated events in the dilepton final state, reconstructing up to the unfolded level. We find that entanglement can be established at better than 5$σ$ both at threshold as well as at high $p_T$ already in the LHC Run 2 dataset. On the other hand, only very high-$p_T$ events are sensitive to a violation of Bell inequalities, making it significa…
Quantum entanglement provides a novel way to test short distance physics in the non-relativistic regime. We will provide a protocol to {\it potentially} test new physics by bringing two charged massive particle interferometers adjacent to each other. Being charged, the two superpositions will be entangled via electromagnetic interactions mediated by the photons, including the Coulomb and the Casimir-Polder potential. We will bring a method of {\it entanglement based tomography} to seek time evolution of very small entanglement phases to probe new physical effects mediated by {\it hitherto unkn…
We assess the quality of a source of allegedly pure two-qubit states using both standard tomography and methods inspired by device-independent self-testing. Even when the detection and locality loopholes are open, the latter methods can dispense with modelling of the system and the measurements. However, due to finite sample fluctuations, the estimated probability distribution usually does not satisfy the no-signaling conditions exactly. We implement data analysis that is robust against these fluctuations. We demonstrate a high ratio $f_s/f_t\approx 0.988$ between the fidelity estimated from s…
We present an experimentally feasible and efficient method for detecting entangled states with measurements that extend naturally to a tomographically complete set. Our detection criterion is based on measurements from subsets of a quantum 2-design, e.g., mutually unbiased bases or symmetric informationally complete states, and has several advantages over standard entanglement witnesses. First, as more detectors in the measurement are applied, there is a higher chance of witnessing a larger set of entangled states, in such a way that the measurement setting converges to a complete setup for qu…
Multipartite entanglement tomography, namely the quantum Fisher information (QFI) calculated with respect to different collective operators, allows to fully characterize the phase diagram of the quantum Ising chain in a transverse field with variable-range coupling. In particular, it recognizes the phase stemming from long-range antiferromagnetic coupling, a capability also shared by the spin squeezing. Furthermore, the QFI locates the quantum critical points, both with vanishing and nonvanishing mass gap. In this case, we also relate the finite-size power-law exponent of the QFI to the critic…
Entanglement is the crucial ingredient of quantum many-body physics, and characterizing and quantifying entanglement in closed system dynamics of quantum simulators is an outstanding challenge in today's era of intermediate scale quantum devices. Here we discuss an efficient tomographic protocol for reconstructing reduced density matrices and entanglement spectra for spin systems. The key step is a parametrization of the reduced density matrix in terms of an entanglement Hamiltonian involving only quasi local few-body terms. This ansatz is fitted to, and can be independently verified from, a s…
Quantum entanglement is a fundamental property of coherent quantum states and an essential resource for quantum computing. While two-qubit entanglement has been demonstrated for spins in silicon, creation of multipartite entanglement, a first step toward implementing quantum error correction, has remained challenging due to the difficulties in controlling a multi-qubit array, such as device disorder, magnetic and electrical noises and exacting exchange controls. Here, we show operation of a fully functional three-qubit array in silicon and generation of a three-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinge…

We investigate how decoherence affects the entanglement established between two quantum dots in micro cavities, and propose a tomographic scheme able to measure the entangled state. The scheme we consider establishes the entanglement via the exchange and measurement of a photon. Making the realistic assumption of noise dominated by pure-dephasing processes, we find that the photon must be exchanged and measured on timescales shorter than the quantum dots' characteristic dephasing time for appreciable levels of entanglement to be achieved. The tomographic scheme is able to reconstruct the full …
The generation of quantum entangled states of many particles is a central goal of quantum information science. Characterizing such states is a complex task that demands exponentially large resources as particles are being added. Previously, we demonstrated a resource efficient source that can generate, in principal, entanglement between any number of photons. This source recursively fuse photon pairs generated by a pulsed laser into a multiphoton entangled state. In the current work, we perform quantum state tomography on the photon pair source and quantum process tomography on the fusion oper…
We present a novel method for quantum tomography of multi-qubit states. We apply the method to spin-multi-photon states, which we produce by periodic excitation of a semiconductor quantum-dot- confined spin every 1/4 of its coherent precession period. These timed excitations lead to the deterministic generation of strings of entangled photons in a cluster state. We show that our method can be used for characterizing the periodic process map, which produces the photonic cluster. From the measured process map, we quantify the robustness of the entanglement in the cluster. The 3-fold enhanced gen…
We propose a continuous variable quantum state tomography protocol of electrons which result from the ionization of atoms or molecules by the absorption of extreme ultraviolet light pulses. Our protocol is benchmarked against a direct calculation of the quantum state of photoelectrons ejected from helium and argon in the vicinity of a Fano resonance. In the latter case, we furthermore distill ion-photoelectron entanglement due to spin-orbit splitting. This opens new routes towards the investigation of quantum coherence and entanglement properties on the ultrafast timescale.
Quantifying entanglement in a quantum system generally requires a complete quantum tomography followed by the NP-hard computation of an entanglement monotone --- requirements that rapidly become intractable at higher dimensions. Observing entanglement in large quantum systems has consequently been relegated to witnesses that only verify its existence. In this article, we show that the violation of recent entropic witnesses of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox also provides tight lower bounds to multiple entanglement measures, such as the entanglement of formation and the distillable entangle…
In this article, we introduce a framework for entanglement characterization by time-resolved single-photon counting with measurement operators defined in the time domain. For a quantum system with unitary dynamics, we generate time-continuous measurements by shifting from the Schrodinger picture to the Heisenberg representation. In particular, we discuss this approach in reference to photonic tomography. To make the measurement scheme realistic, we impose timing uncertainty on photon counts along with the Poisson noise. Then, the framework is tested numerically on quantum tomography of qubits.…
