We describe the first results on weak gravitational lensing from the SuperCLASS survey: the first survey specifically designed to measure the weak lensing effect in radio-wavelength data, both alone and in cross-correlation with optical data. We analyse 1.53 square degrees of optical data from the Subaru telescope and 0.26 square degrees of radio data from the e-MERLIN and VLA telescopes (the DR1 data set). Using standard methodologies on the optical data only we make a significant (10 sigma) detection of the weak lensing signal (a shear power spectrum) due to the massive supercluster of galaxies in the targeted region. For the radio data we develop a new method to measure the shapes of galaxies from the interferometric data, and we construct a simulation pipeline to validate this method. We then apply this analysis to our radio observations, treating the e-MERLIN and VLA data independently. We achieve source densities of 0.5 per square arcmin in the VLA data and 0.06 per square arcmin in the e-MERLIN data, numbers which prove too small to allow a detection of a weak lensing signal in either the radio data alone or in cross-correlation with the optical data. Finally, we show preliminary results from a visibility-plane combination of the data from e-MERLIN and VLA which will be used for the forthcoming full SuperCLASS data release. This approach to data combination is expected to enhance both the number density of weak lensing sources available and the fidelity with which their shapes can be measured.
I outline the prospects for performing weak lensing studies with the new generation of radio telescopes that are coming online now and in the future. I include a description of a proposed technique to use polarization observations in radio weak lensing analyses which could prove extremely useful for removing a contaminating signal from intrinsic alignments. Ultimately, the Square Kilometre Array promises to be an exceptional instrument for performing weak lensing studies due to the high resolution, large area surveys which it will perform. In the nearer term, the e-MERLIN instrument in the UK …
We present optical and near-infrared imaging covering a $\sim$1.53 deg$^2$ region in the Super-Cluster Assisted Shear Survey (SuperCLASS) field, which aims to make the first robust weak lensing measurement at radio wavelengths. We derive photometric redshifts for $\approx$176,000 sources down to $i^\prime_{\rm AB}\sim24$ and present photometric redshifts for 1.4 GHz $e$-MERLIN and VLA detected radio sources found in the central 0.26 deg$^{2}$. We compile an initial catalog of 149 radio sources brighter than S$_{1.4}>75$ $μ$Jy and find their photometric redshifts span $0<z_{\rm phot}<4$ with ra…
We analyze the final release of the Planck satellite data to constrain the gravitational lensing potential in a model-independent manner. The amount of lensing determined from the smoothing of the acoustic peaks in the temperature and polarization power spectra is 2$σ$ too high when compared with the measurements using the lensing reconstruction and 2.8$σ$ too high when compared with $Λ$CDM expectation based on the "unlensed" portion of the temperature and polarization power spectra. The largest change from the previous data release is the $Λ$CDM expectation, driven by improved constraints to …
We study the shape of eight dynamically relaxed galaxy clusters observed with the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-Ray Observatory. Using strong and weak gravitational lensing, the shape of the Brightest Cluster Galaxy and the X-ray isophote we study the ellipticity of the cluster halo at four different radii. We find that the proxies probing the inner regions of the cluster are strongly coupled with the BCG shape correlated with both the shape predicted by strong gravitational lensing and the X-ray isophote. Conversely we find no such correlation between the shape as predicted by the weak…
We measure the cross-power spectrum between galaxy density from Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS) catalogues and gravitational lensing convergence from Planck data release 1 (2013) and 2 (2015). We investigate three main galaxy samples: $18.0<i_{\rm AB}<22.0$, $18.0<i_{\rm AB}<23.0$, $18.0<i_{\rm AB}<24.0$ in the redshift range $0.2<z<1.3$ in each of the four CFHTLenS wide fields. By comparing the measured cross-spectrum with model predictions, linear galaxy-dark matter biases of $b=0.82^{+0.24}_{-0.23}, 0.83^{+0.19}_{-0.18}, 0.82^{+0.16}_{-0.14}$ are inferred at signifi…
I cross-correlate the galaxy counts from the Canada-France Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS) galaxy catalogue and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) convergence from the Planck data release 1 (2013) and 2 (2015), following the work of Omori & Holder (2015). I improve their study by computing an analytic covariance from the Halo Model, implementing simulations to validate the theoretically estimated error bars and the reconstruction method, fitting both a galaxy bias and a cross-correlation amplitude using the joint cross and galaxy auto-correlation, and performing a series of null test…
Cross-correlations between galaxy weak lensing (WL) and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing are a powerful tool to probe matter fluctuations at intermediate redshifts and to detect residual systematics in either probe. In this paper, we study the cross-correlation of galaxy WL from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC) first data release and CMB lensing from the final Planck data release, for HSC source galaxies at 0.3< z < 1.5. HSC is the deepest Stage-III galaxy WL survey, and provides both a great opportunity to study the high-redshift universe and new challenges relate…
A great deal of attention has been given to the so-called Cold Spot in maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature. We present a similar analysis, searching for extremal spots in the CMB lensing convergence and lensing potential maps from the Planck 2018 data release. We perform a multi-scale and multi-filter analysis using the first three members of the Mexican-hat wavelet family to search for extremal features of different shapes and sizes. Although an initial analysis appears to show the existence of some extremal spots at scales below about 5 degree, we conclude, after margin…

We reconstruct the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing potential on the latest Planck CMB PR4 (NPIPE) maps, which include slightly more data than the 2018 PR3 release, and implement quadratic estimators using more optimal filtering. We increase the reconstruction signal to noise by almost $20\%$, constraining the amplitude of the CMB-marginalized lensing power spectrum in units of the Planck 2018 best-fit to $1.004 \pm 0.024$ ($68\%$ limits), which is the tightest constraint on the CMB lensing power spectrum to date. For a base $Λ$CDM cosmology we find $σ_8 Ω_m^{0.25} = 0.599\pm 0.016$ f…
Radio weak lensing, while a highly promising complementary probe to optical weak lensing, will require incredible precision in the measurement of galaxy shape parameters. In this paper, we extend the Bayesian Inference for Radio Observations model fitting approach to measure galaxy shapes directly from visibility data of radio continuum surveys, instead of from image data. We apply a Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) technique for sampling the posterior, which is more efficient than the standard Monte Carlo Markov Chain method when dealing with a large dimensional parameter space. Adopting the exp…
As the first paper in a series on the study of the galaxy-galaxy lensing from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7), we present our image processing pipeline that corrects the systematics primarily introduced by the Point Spread Function (PSF). Using this pipeline, we processed SDSS DR7 imaging data in $r$ band and generated a background galaxy catalog containing the shape information of each galaxy. Based on our own shape measurements of the galaxy images from SDSS DR7, we extract the galaxy-galaxy (GG) lensing signals around foreground spectroscopic galaxies binned in different …
HectoMAP is a dense, red-selected redshift survey to a limiting $r = 21.3$ covering 55 square degrees in a contiguous 1.5$^\circ$ strip across the northern sky. This region is also covered by the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) photometric survey enabling a range of applications that combine a dense foreground redshift survey with both strong and weak lensing maps. The median redshift of HectoMAP exceeds 0.3 throughout the survey region and the mean density of the redshift survey is $\sim 2000$ galaxies deg$^{-2}$. Here we report a total of 17,313 redshifts in a f…
Unbiased and precise mass calibration of galaxy clusters is crucial to fully exploit galaxy clusters as cosmological probes. Stacking of weak lensing signal allows us to measure observable-mass relations down to less massive halos halos without extrapolation. We propose a Bayesian inference method to constrain the intrinsic scatter of the mass proxy in stacked analyses. The scatter of the stacked data is rescaled with respect to the individual scatter based on the number of binned clusters. We apply this method to the galaxy clusters detected with the AMICO (Adaptive Matched Identifier of Clus…
We use the overlap between multiband photometry of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) and spectroscopic data based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) to infer the colour-magnitude relation of red-sequence galaxies. We then use this inferred relation to select luminous red galaxies (LRGs) in the redshift range of $0.1<z<0.7$ over the entire KiDS Data Release 3 footprint. We construct two samples of galaxies with different constant comoving densities and different luminosity thresholds. The selected red galaxies have photometric redshifts with typical photo-z e…
As the second paper of a series on studying galaxy-galaxy lensing signals using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7), we present our measurement and modelling of the lensing signals around groups of galaxies. We divide the groups into four halo mass bins, and measure the signals around four different halo-center tracers: brightest central galaxy (BCG), luminosity-weighted center, number-weighted center and X-ray peak position. For X-ray and SDSS DR7 cross identified groups, we further split the groups into low and high X-ray emission subsamples, both of which are assigned wit…
We report a $5.3σ$ detection of the gravitational lensing effect of cosmic voids from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic (BOSS) Data Release 12 seen in the $Planck$ 2018 cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing convergence map. To make this detection, we introduce new optimal techniques for void stacking and filtering of the CMB maps, such as binning voids by a combination of their observed galaxy density and size to separate those with distinctive lensing signatures. We calibrate theoretical expectations for the void-lensing signal using mock catalogs generated in a suite of 108 full-sky l…
We present VLT spectroscopic observations of 7 discovered galaxy groups between 0.3<z<0.7. The groups were selected from the Strong Lensing Legacy Survey (SL2S), a survey that consists in a systematic search for strong lensing systems in the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS). We give details about the target selection, spectroscopic observations and data reduction for the first release of confirmed SL2S groups. The dynamical analysis of the systems reveals that they are gravitationally bound structures, with at least 4 confirmed members and velocity dispersions between 300 …
We discuss whether massive neutrinos (either active or sterile) can reconcile some of the tensions within cosmological data that have been brought into focus by the recently released {\it Planck} data. We point out that a discrepancy is present when comparing the primary CMB and lensing measurements both from the CMB and galaxy lensing data using CFHTLenS, similar to that which arises when comparing CMB measurements and SZ cluster counts. A consistent picture emerges and including a prior for the cluster constraints and BAOs we find that: for an active neutrino model with 3 degenerate neutrino…
We present a method that accurately propagates residual uncertainties in photometric redshift distributions into the cosmological inference from weak lensing measurements. The redshift distributions of tomographic redshift bins are parameterised using a flexible modified Gaussian mixture model. We fit this model to pre-calibrated redshift distributions and implement an analytic marginalisation over the potentially several hundred redshift nuisance parameters in the weak lensing likelihood, which is demonstrated to accurately recover the cosmological posterior. By iteratively fitting cosmologic…
We present the first public release of ShapePipe, an open-source and modular weak-lensing measurement, analysis, and validation pipeline written in Python. We describe the design of the software and justify the choices made. We provide a brief description of all the modules currently available and summarise how the pipeline has been applied to real Ultraviolet Near-Infrared Optical Northern Survey data. Finally, we mention plans for future applications and development. The code and accompanying documentation are publicly available on GitHub.
We use the emulation framework CosmoPower to construct and publicly release neural network emulators of cosmological observables, including the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarization power spectra, matter power spectrum, distance-redshift relation, baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and redshift-space distortion (RSD) observables, and derived parameters. We train our emulators on Einstein-Boltzmann calculations obtained with high-precision numerical convergence settings, for a wide range of cosmological models including $Λ$CDM, $w$CDM, $Λ$CDM+$N_\mathrm{eff}$, and $Λ$CDM…
A joint analysis of the clustering of galaxies and their weak gravitational lensing signal is well-suited to simultaneously constrain the galaxy-halo connection as well as the cosmological parameters by breaking the degeneracy between galaxy bias and the amplitude of clustering signal. In a series of two papers, we perform such an analysis at the highest redshift ($z\sim0.53$) in the literature using CMASS galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Eleventh Data Release (SDSS-III/BOSS DR11) catalog spanning 8300~deg$^2$. In this paper, we present detai…

We simultaneously present constraints on the stellar-to-halo mass relation for central and satellite galaxies through a weak lensing analysis of spectroscopically classified galaxies. Using overlapping data from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), and the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA), we find that satellite galaxies are hosted by halo masses that are $0.53 \pm 0.39$ dex (68\% confidence, $3σ$ detection) smaller than those of central galaxies of the same stellar mass (for a stellar mass of $\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) = 10.6$). This is consistent with galaxy format…
We present new constraints on extended cosmological scenarios using the recent data from the Planck 2018 Legacy release. In addition to the six parameters of the standard LCDM model, we also simultaneously vary the dark energy equation of state, the neutrino mass, the neutrino effective number, the running of the spectral index and the lensing amplitude $A_L$. We confirm that a resolution of the Hubble tension is given by a dark energy equation of state with w<-1, ruling out quintessence models at high statistical significance. This solution is, however, not supported by BAO and Pantheon data.…
We present the weak lensing analysis of 279 CODEX clusters using imaging data from 4200 $\text{deg}^{2}$ of the DECam Legacy Survey (DECaLS) Data Release 3. The cluster sample results from a joint selection in X-ray, optical richness in the range $20 \leq λ< 110$, and redshift in the range $0.1 \leq z \leq 0.2$. We model the cluster mass ($M_{\rm 200c}$) and the richness relation with the expression $\left\langle M_{\rm 200c} | λ\right\rangle \propto M_{0} \, (λ/ 40)^{F_λ}$. By measuring the CODEX cluster sample as an individual cluster, we obtain the best-fit values, $M_{0} = 3.24^{+0.29}_{-0…
The Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) is an ongoing optical wide-field imaging survey with the OmegaCAM camera at the VLT Survey Telescope. It aims to image 1500 square degrees in four filters (ugri). The core science driver is mapping the large-scale matter distribution in the Universe, using weak lensing shear and photometric redshift measurements. Further science cases include galaxy evolution, Milky Way structure, detection of high-redshift clusters, and finding rare sources such as strong lenses and quasars. Here we present the third public data release (DR3) and several associated data products,…
We present weak lensing shear catalogues from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey, KiDS-1000, spanning 1006 square degrees of deep and high-resolution imaging. Our `gold-sample' of galaxies, with well-calibrated photometric redshift distributions, consists of 21 million galaxies with an effective number density of $6.17$ galaxies per square arcminute. We quantify the accuracy of the spatial, temporal, and flux-dependent point-spread function (PSF) model, verifying that the model meets our requirements to induce less than a $0.1σ$ change in the inferred cosmic shear constraints on…
We present a strong lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 370 (z=0.375) based on the recent multicolor ACS images obtained as part of the Early Release Observation (ERO) that followed the Hubble Service Mission #4. Back in 1987, the giant gravitational arc (z=0.725) in Abell 370 was one of the first pieces of evidence that massive clusters are dense enough to act as strong gravitational lenses. The new observations reveal in detail its disklike morphology, and we show that it can be interpreted as a complex five-image configuration, with a total magnification factor of 32+/-4. Moreover,…
We study the weak gravitational lensing effects caused by a stochastic distribution of dark matter halos. We develop a simple approach to calculate the magnification probability distribution function which allows us to easily compute the magnitude bias and dispersion for an arbitrary data sample and a given universe model. As an application we consider the effects of single-mass large-scale cosmic inhomogeneities to the SNe magnitude-redshift relation, and conclude that such structures could bias the PDF enough to affect the extraction of cosmological parameters from the limited size of presen…

The masses of galaxy clusters can be measured using data obtained exclusively from wide photometric surveys in one of two ways: directly from the amplitude of the weak lensing signal or, indirectly, through the use of scaling relations calibrated using binned lensing measurements. In this paper, we build on a recently proposed idea and implement an alternative method based on the radial profile of the satellite distribution. This technique relies on splashback, a feature associated with the apocenter of recently accreted galaxies that offers a clear window into the phase-space structure of clu…
On 2022 July 8, NASA shared$^{a}$ the list of five public showcase targets which have been observed with the new \textit{James Webb Space Telescope} (JWST), and whose data are expected to be released to the public around Tuesday, July 12. One of these targets is the galaxy cluster SMACS~J0723.3-7327 which acts as a gravitational lens and was recently imaged with the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} in the framework of the \textit{Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey} program (RELICS). To facilitate studies by the community with the upcoming JWST data, we publish here a lens model for SMACS0723 -…
The nominal mission maps from the Planck satellite contain a wealth of information about secondary anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), including those induced by the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect and gravitational lensing. As both the tSZ and CMB lensing signals trace the large-scale matter density field, the anisotropies sourced by these processes are expected to be correlated. We report the first detection of this cross-correlation signal, which we measure at 6.2 sigma significance using the Planck data. We take advantage of Planck's multifrequency coverage to co…

A key goal of the Stage IV dark energy experiments Euclid, LSST and WFIRST is to measure the growth of structure with cosmic time from weak lensing analysis over large regions of the sky. Weak lensing cosmology will be challenging: in addition to highly accurate galaxy shape measurements, statistically robust and accurate photometric redshift (photo-z) estimates for billions of faint galaxies will be needed in order to reconstruct the three-dimensional matter distribution. Here we present an overview of and initial results from the Complete Calibration of the Color-Redshift Relation (C3R2) sur…

We perform a joint analysis of the abundance, the clustering and the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal of galaxies measured from Data Release 11 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (SDSS III-BOSS) in our companion paper, Miyatake et al. (2014). The lensing signal was obtained by using the shape catalog of background galaxies from the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey, which was made publicly available by the CFHTLenS collaboration, with an area overlap of about 105 deg$^2$. We analyse the data in the framework of the halo model in order to fit halo…
If properly calibrated, the shapes of galaxy clusters can be used to investigate many physical processes: from feedback and quenching of star formation, to the nature of dark matter. Theorists frequently measure shapes using moments of inertia of simulated particles'. We instead create mock (optical, X-ray, strong- and weak-lensing) observations of the twenty-two most massive ($\sim10^{14.7}\,M_\odot$) relaxed clusters in the BAHAMAS simulations. We find that observable measures of shape are rounder. Even when moments of inertia are projected into 2D and evaluated at matched radius, they overe…
We present data products from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS). CFHTLenS is based on the Wide component of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS). It encompasses 154 deg^2 of deep, optical, high-quality, sub-arcsecond imaging data in the five optical filters u^*g'r'i'z'. The article presents our data processing of the complete CFHTLenS data set. We were able to obtain a data set with very good image quality and high-quality astrometric and photometric calibration. Our external astrometric accuracy is between 60-70 mas with respect to SDSS data and…
