In \citep{Qin+}, we attempted to reconstruct the weak lensing convergence map $\hatκ$ from cosmic magnification by linearly weighting the DECaLS galaxy overdensities in different magnitude bins of $grz$ photometry bands. The $\hatκ$ map is correlated with cosmic shear at 20-$σ$ significance. However, the low galaxy number density in the DECaLS survey prohibits the measurement of $\hatκ$ auto-correlation. In this paper, we apply the reconstruction method to the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (DES Y3) galaxies from the DES Data Release 2 (DR2). With greater survey depth and higher galaxy number density, convergence-shear cross-correlation signals are detected with $S/N\approx 9,16,20$ at $0.4<z_κ<0.6,0.6<z_κ<0.8$ and $0.8<z_κ<1.0$ respectively. More remarkably, the $\hatκ-\hatκ$ correlations of the $0.4<z_κ<0.6$ and $0.6<z_κ<0.8$ bins show reasonably good agreement with predictions based on theoretical interpretation of $\hatκ-γ$ measurement. This result takes a step further towards the cosmological application of our lensing reconstruction method.
In paper I of this series (Yang et al. 2017, ApJ), we proposed an analytical method of blind separation ({\bf ABS}) to extract the cosmic magnification signal in galaxy number distribution and reconstruct the weak lensing power spectrum. Here we report a new version of the ABS method, with significantly improved performance. This version is characterized by a shift parameter $\mathcal{S}$, with the special case of $\mathcal{S}=0$ corresponding to the original ABS method. We have tested this new version, compared to the previous one, and confirmed its supreme performance in all investigated sit…
Dark matter cannot be observed directly, but its weak gravitational lensing slightly distorts the apparent shapes of background galaxies, making weak lensing one of the most promising probes of cosmology. Several observational studies have measured the effect, and there are currently running, and planned efforts to provide even larger, and higher resolution weak lensing maps. Due to nonlinearities on small scales, the traditional analysis with two-point statistics does not fully capture all the underlying information. Multiple inference methods were proposed to extract more details based on hi…
Fast Calculation of the Weak Lensing Aperture Mass Statistic
We derive the essentials of the skewed weak lensing likelihood via a simple Hierarchical Model. Our likelihood passes four objective and cosmology-independent tests which a standard Gaussian likelihood fails. We demonstrate that sound weak lensing analyses are naturally biased low, and this does not indicate any new physics such as deviations from $Λ$CDM. Mathematically, the biases arise because noisy two-point functions follow skewed distributions. This form of bias is already known from CMB analyses, where the low multipoles have asymmetric error bars. Weak lensing is more strongly affected …
I describe a method to estimate response matrices of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing power spectra estimators to the true sky power under realistic conditions. Applicable to all lensing reconstruction pipelines based on quadratic estimators (QE), it uses a small number of Gaussian CMB Monte-Carlos and specially designed QE's in order to obtain sufficiently accurate matrices with little computational effort. This method may be used to improve the modelling of CMB lensing band-powers by incorporating at least some of the non-idealities encountered in CMB lensing reconstruction. These n…
We introduce a new estimator of the CMB lensing power spectrum, together with its likelihood, based on iterative lensing reconstruction. Despite the increased complexity of the lensing maps, this estimator shares similarities with the standard quadratic estimator. Most importantly, it is unbiased towards the assumptions done on the noise and cosmology for the lensing reconstruction. This new spectrum estimator can double the constraints on the lensing amplitude compared to the quadratic estimator, while keeping numerical cost under control and being robust to errors.
Strong gravitational lensing provides unique opportunities to investigate the mass distribution at the cores of galaxy clusters and to study high redshift galaxies. Using $94$ strong lensing models of $74$ cluster fields from the \textit{Hubble} Frontier Fields (HFF), Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS), and Sloan Giant Arcs Survey (SGAS), modeled with three parametric approaches, we evaluate the lensing strength of each cluster (area with $|μ|\geq3$ for $z_s=9$). We assess how large scale mass, projected inner core mass, and the inner slope of the projected mass density profile relat…
We forecast constraints on the amplitude of matter clustering sigma_8(z) achievable with the combination of cluster weak lensing and number counts, in current and next-generation weak lensing surveys. We advocate an approach, analogous to galaxy-galaxy lensing, in which the observables in each redshift bin are the mean number counts and the mean weak lensing profile of clusters above a mass proxy threshold. The primary astrophysical nuisance parameter is the logarithmic scatter between the mass proxy and true mass near the threshold. For surveys similar to the Dark Energy Survey (DES), the Rom…
Precise reconstruction of the cosmic microwave background lensing potential can be achieved with deep polarization surveys by iteratively removing lensing-induced $B$ modes. We introduce a lensing spectrum estimator and its likelihood for such optimal iterative reconstruction. Our modelling share similarities to the state-of-the-art likelihoods for quadratic estimator-based (QE) lensing reconstruction. In particular, we generalize the $N_L^{(0)}$ and $N_L^{(1)}$ lensing biases, and design a realization-dependent spectrum debiaser, making this estimator robust to uncertainties in the data model…
Dark matter halos represent the highest density peaks in the matter distribution. Conversely, cosmic voids are under-dense patches of the universe. Probing the mass distribution of the universe requires various approaches, including weak gravitational lensing that subtly modifies the shape of distant sources, and Doppler lensing that changes the apparent size and magnitude of objects due to peculiar velocities. In this work, we adopt both gravitational and Doppler lensing effects to study the underlying matter distribution in and around cosmic voids/halos. We use the relativistic $N$-body code…
The imprints of large-scale structures on the Cosmic Microwave Background can be studied via the CMB lensing and Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) signals. In particular, the stacked ISW signal around supervoids has been claimed in several works to be anomalously high. In this study, we find cluster and void superstructures using four tomographic redshift bins with $0<z<0.8$ from the DESI Legacy Survey, and measure the stacked CMB lensing and ISW signals around them. To compare our measurements with $Λ$CDM model predictions, we construct a mock catalogue with matched galaxy number density and bias,…
Advances in upcoming weak lensing surveys pose new challenges for an accurate modeling of the lensing observables. The wide sky coverage of Euclid makes angular scales down to $l_\mathrm{min}=10$ accessible. At such large angular scales, general relativistic effects manifest themselves, and the lensing magnification cannot be correctly described by the standard lensing convergence only. The impact of line-of-sight velocities on the magnification angular power spectrum, referred to as the Doppler magnification, is already well recognized in literature. In particular, it was suggested that the D…

We investigate whether the shapes of galaxy clusters inferred from weak gravitational lensing can be used as a test of the nature of dark matter. We analyse mock weak lensing data, with gravitational lenses extracted from cosmological simulations run with two different dark matter models (CDM and SIDM). We fit elliptical NFW profiles to the shear fields of the simulated clusters. Despite large differences in the distribution of 3D shapes between CDM and SIDM, we find that the distributions of weak-lensing-inferred cluster shapes are almost indistinguishable. We trace this information loss to t…
We present the first reconstruction of dark matter maps from weak lensing observational data using deep learning. We train a convolution neural network (CNN) with a Unet based architecture on over $3.6\times10^5$ simulated data realizations with non-Gaussian shape noise and with cosmological parameters varying over a broad prior distribution. We interpret our newly created DES SV map as an approximation of the posterior mean $P(κ| γ)$ of the convergence given observed shear. Our DeepMass method is substantially more accurate than existing mass-mapping methods. With a validation set of 8000 sim…
We measure the cross-correlation between galaxy groups constructed from DESI Legacy Imaging Survey DR8 and \emph{Planck} CMB lensing, over overlapping sky area of 16876 $\rm deg^2$. The detections are significant and consistent with the expected signal of the large-scale structure of the universe, over group samples of various redshift, mass, richness $N_{\rm g}$ and over various scale cuts. The overall S/N is 40 for a conservative sample with $N_{\rm g}\geq 5$, and increases to $50$ for the sample with $N_{\rm g}\geq 2$. Adopting the \emph{Planck} 2018 cosmology, we constrain the density bias…
We derive the complete super-sample covariance (SSC) of the matter and weak lensing convergence power spectra using the power spectrum response formalism to accurately describe the coupling of super- to sub-survey modes. The SSC term is completely characterized by the survey window function, the nonlinear matter power spectrum and the full first-order nonlinear power spectrum response function, which describes the response to super-survey density and tidal field perturbations. Generalized separate universe simulations can efficiently measure these responses in the nonlinear regime of structure…
Cross-correlations between the lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and other tracers of large-scale structure provide a unique way to reconstruct the growth of dark matter, break degeneracies between cosmology and galaxy physics, and test theories of modified gravity. We detect a cross-correlation between DESI-like luminous red galaxies (LRGs) selected from DECaLS imaging and CMB lensing maps reconstructed with the Planck satellite at a significance of $S/N = 27.2$ over scales $\ell_{\rm min} = 30$, $\ell_{\rm max} = 1000$. To correct for magnification bias, we determine the slope…
We study the impact of neglecting lensing magnification in galaxy clustering analyses for future galaxy surveys, considering the LambdaCDM model and two extensions: massive neutrinos and modifications of General Relativity. Our study focuses on the biases on the constraints and on the estimation of the cosmological parameters. We perform a comprehensive investigation of these two effects for the upcoming photometric and spectroscopic galaxy surveys Euclid and SKA for different redshift binning configurations. We also provide a fitting formula for the magnification bias of SKA. Our results show…
