In this paper we formulate the relationship between force-free electrodynamics and foliations. The background metric, is considered predetermined and electrically neutral, but otherwise arbitrary. As it turns out, solutions to force-free electrodynamics is intimately connected to the existence of foliations of a spacetime with prescribed properties. We also prove a local existence and uniqueness theorem and provide a recipe for constructing the unique solution/class of solutions when certain conditions are met. We clarify the theorem with examples. We are also able to also prove a singularity theorem for when non-null solutions approach the null limit. Here too, we construct an explicit example to illustrate the singularity theorem.
The present paper has a number of distinct purposes. First is to give a description of a class of electromagnetic knots from the perspective of foliation theory. Knotted solutions are then interpreted in terms of two codimension-2 foliations whose knotted leaves intersect orthogonally everywhere in spacetime. Secondly, we show how the foliations give rise to field lines and how the topological invariants emerge. The machinery used here emphasizes intrinsic properties of the leaves instead of observer dependent quantities - such as a time function, a local rest frame or a Cauchy hypersurface. F…
We solve the spacelike, spherically symmetric, constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in the maximally extended Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime with the charge smaller than the mass. Based on these results, we construct constant mean curvature foliations with fixed or varied mean curvature in each slice in this spacetime.
This paper describes the electrodynamics of a null and force-free field in completely geometric terms. As was previously established in \cite{Menon_FF20}, solutions to force-free electrodynamics are governed by the existence of certain special types of foliations of spacetime. Here the nature of the foliations in a coordinate-free formalism in the null case is prescribed. All of the general results are illustrated by constructing a null, force-free electrodynamic field in a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson- Walker (FLRW) spacetime.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of the Dirichlet problem for spacelike, spherically symmetric, constant mean curvature equation with symmetric boundary data in the extended Schwarzschild spacetime. As an application, we completely solve the CMC foliation conjecture which is posted by Malec and O Murchadha in 2003.
We construct a $T$-axisymmetric, spacelike, spherically symmetric, constant mean curvature hypersurfaces foliation in the Kruskal extension with properties that the mean curvature varies in each slice and ranges from minus infinity to plus infinity. This family of hypersurfaces extends the CMC foliation discussions posted by Malec and Ó Murchadha in 2009.
We consider open globally hyperbolic spacetimes $N$ of dimension $n+1$, $n\ge 3$, which are spatially asymptotic to a Robertson-Walker spacetime or an open Friedmann universe with spatial curvature $\tildeκ= 0,-1$ and prove, under reasonable assumptions, that there exists a unique foliation by hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature and that the mean curvature function $τ$ is a smooth time function if $N$ is smooth. Moreover, among the Friedmann universes which satisfy the necessary conditions are those that reflect the present assumptions of the development of the universe.
We propose a new foliation of asymptotically Euclidean initial data sets by 2-spheres of constant spacetime mean curvature (STCMC). The leaves of the foliation have the STCMC-property regardless of the initial data set in which the foliation is constructed which asserts that there is a plethora of STCMC 2-spheres in a neighborhood of spatial infinity of any asymptotically flat spacetime. The STCMC-foliation can be understood as a covariant relativistic generalization of the CMC-foliation suggested by Huisken and Yau. We show that a unique STCMC-foliation exists near infinity of any asymptotica…
In this work, a method for constructing null foliations of spacetime is presented. This method is used to specify equivalence classes of null generators, whose representatives can be associated lightlike co-normals that are locally affine geodesic and thus locally orthogonal to embedded null hypersurfaces of spacetime. The main benefit of the proposed procedure is the fact that it is less geometrically restrictive than the traditional dual-null approaches to general relativity, but nevertheless allows for the conclusion that spacetimes can be foliated by suitable pairs of normalized null geode…
It is well known that static spherically symmetric spacetimes can admit foliations by flat spacelike hypersurfaces, which are best described in terms of the Painlevè--Gullstrand coordinates. The uniqueness and existence of such foliations were addressed earlier. In this paper, we prove, purely geometrically, that any possible foliation of a static spherically symmetric spacetime by an arbitrary codimension-one spherical spacelike geometry, up to time translation and rotation, is unique, and we find the algebraic condition under which it exists. This leads us to what can be considered as the mo…
We identify certain general geometric conditions on a foliation of a spacetime (M,g) by timelike curves that will impede the existence of null geodesic lines, especially if (M,g) possesses a compact Cauchy hypersurface. The absence of such lines, in turn, yields well-known restrictions on the geometry of cosmological spacetimes, in the context of Bartnik's splitting conjecture. Since the (non)existence of null lines is actually a conformally invariant property, such conditions only need to apply for some suitable conformal rescaling of g.
Proof of Positive Energy Theorem by spacetime foliations
(Positivity of total energy in广义相对论,Physical Review D { \bf 36}(1987),1041-4)。我们简要总结了这些结果并提出了一种新的叶理规。
The subject of cosmological backreaction in General Relativity is often approached by coordinate-dependent and metric-based analyses. We present in this letter an averaging formalism for the scalar parts of Einstein's equations that is coordinate-independent and only functionally depends on a metric. This formalism is applicable to general 3+1 foliations of spacetime for an arbitrary fluid with tilted flow. We clarify the dependence on spacetime foliation and argue that this dependence is weak in cosmological settings. We also introduce a new set of averaged equations that feature a global cos…
Motivated by situations with temporal evolution and spatial symmetries both singled out, we develop a new 2+1+1 decomposition of spacetime, based on a nonorthogonal double foliation. Time evolution proceeds along the leaves of the spatial foliation. We identify the gravitational variables in the velocity phase-space as the 2-metric (induced on the intersection $Σ_{tχ}$ of the hypersurfaces of the foliations), the 2+1 components of the spatial shift vector, together with the extrinsic curvature, normal fundamental form and normal fundamental scalar of $Σ_{tχ}$, all constructed with the normal t…
We introduce a new method for analyzing nonlinear wave-Klein-Gordon systems and establishing global-in-time existence results for the Cauchy problem when the initial data need not have compact support. This method, which we call the Euclidian-Hyperboidal Foliation Method (EHFM), relies on the construction of a spacetime foliation obtained by glueing together asymptotically Euclidian and asymptotically hyperboloidal hypersurfaces. Well-chosen frames of vector fields (null-semi-hyperboloidal, Euclidian-hyperboloidal) allow us to exhibit the structure of the equations under consideration and anal…
We study the linearised perturbation of the constant mass aspect function foliation in a Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. In particular, we investigate the linearised perturbation of the asymptotic geometry of the foliation at null infinity. We show that there is a 4-dimensional linear space for the linearised perturbation of the initial leaf inside the event horizon, corresponding to which the linearised perturbation of the asymptotic geometry of the foliation at null infinity is preserved to be round. For such a linearised perturbation of the initial leaf in this 4-dimensional linear spac…
We develop a framework that facilitates the study of the causal structure of spacetimes with a causally preferred foliation. Such spacetimes may arise as solutions of Lorentz-violating theories, e.g. Horava gravity. Our framework allows us to rigorously define concepts such as black/white holes and to formalize the notion of a `universal horizon', that has been previously introduced in the simpler setting of static and spherically symmetric geometries. We also touch upon the issue of development and prove that universal horizons are Cauchy horizons when evolution depends on boundary data or as…

We investigate a foliation of Schwarzschild spacetime determined by observers freely falling in the radial direction. This is described using a generalisation of Gullstrand-Painlevé coordinates which allows for any possible radial velocity. This foliation provides a contrast with the usual static foliation implied by Schwarzschild coordinates. The $3$-dimensional spaces are distinct for the static and falling observers, so the embedding diagrams, spatial measurement, simultaneity, and time at infinity are also distinct, though the $4$-dimensional spacetime is unchanged. Our motivation is conce…
We consider the self-interaction phenomenon in the framework of the Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics. In the present paper, we obtain the self-interaction potential energy of a charge at rest for the spacetimes with topological defects of two types: for the axially symmetric spacetime of the straight cosmic string and the spherically symmetric global monopole spacetime. It is shown that the behavior of this expression depends essentially on the angular defect, in spite of the Bopp-Podolsky model parameter, which plays the role of a scale factor. In contrast with the usual Maxwell electrodynamics,…
