For $α_0 = \left[a_0, a_1, \ldots\right]$ an infinite continued fraction and $σ$ a linear fractional transformation, we study the continued fraction expansion of $σ(α_0)$ and its convergents. We provide the continued fraction expansion of $σ(α_0)$ for four general families of continued fractions and when $\left|\det σ\right| = 2$. We also find nonlinear recurrence relations among the convergents of $σ(α_0)$ which allow us to highlight relations between convergents of $α_0$ and $σ(α_0)$. Finally, we apply our results to some special and well-studied continued fractions, like Hurwitzian and Tasoevian ones, giving a first study about leaping convergents having steps provided by nonlinear functions.
In this paper we define "a continued fraction expansion of the exponential integral $E_{1}(x)$ at infinity", which is analogous to the regular continued fraction expansion of real numbers, and prove that this expansion gives the same continued fraction. Moreover, we give concrete representations of rational functions which are obtained by truncating the continued fraction.
In this note, we show that any continued fraction convergent of the number $e = 2.71828...$ can be derived by approximating some integral $I_{n, m} := \int_{0}^{1} x^n (1 - x)^m e^x d x$ $(n, m \in \mathbb{N})$ by 0. In addition, we present a new way for finding again the well-known regular continued fraction expansion of $e$.

Let $\frak E$ denote be the ring of Eisenstein integers. Let $z\in \mathbb C$ and $p_n,q_n \in \frak E$ be such that $\{p_n/q_n\}$ is the sequence of convergents corresponding to the continued fraction expansion of $z$ with respect to the nearest integer algorithm. Then we show that for any $q\in \frak E$ such that $1\leq |q|\leq |q_n|$ and any $p\in \frak E$, $|qz-p|\geq \frac12 |q_nz-p_n|$. This enables us to conclude that $z\in \mathbb C$ is badly approximable, in terms of Eisenstein integers, if and only if the corresponding sequence of partial quotients is bounded.
In recent work, the first two authors constructed a generalized continued fraction called the $p$-continued fraction, characterized by the property that its convergents (a subsequence of the regular convergents) are best approximations with respect to the $L^p$ norm, where $p\geq 1$. We extend this construction to the region $0<p<1$, where now the $L^p$ quasinorm is non-convex. We prove that the approximation coefficients of the $p$-continued fraction are bounded above by $1/\sqrt{5}+\varepsilon_p$, where $\varepsilon_p\to 0$ as $p\to 0$. In light of Hurwitz's theorem, this upper bound is shar…
We introduce here a general framework for studying continued fraction expansions for complex numbers and establish some results on the convergence of the corresponding sequence of convergents. For continued fraction expansions with partial quotients in a discrete subring of $\mathbb C$ an analogue of the classical Lagrange theorem, characterising quadratic surds as numbers with eventually periodic continued fraction expansions, is proved. Monotonicity and exponential growth are established for the absolute values of the denominators of the convergents for a class of continued fraction algorith…
In this paper we give describe a new connection between the dilogarithm function and solutions to Pell's equation $x^2-ny^2 = \pm 1$. For each solution $x,y$ to Pell's equation we obtain a dilogarithm identity whose terms are given by the continued fraction expansion of the associated unit $x+y\sqrt{n} \in \Z[\sqrt{n}]$. We further show that Ramanujan's dilogarithm value-identities correspond to an identity for the regular ideal hyperbolic hexagon.
For a monic polynomial $D(X)$ of even degree, express $\sqrt D$ as a Laurent series in $X^{-1}$; this yields a continued fraction expansion (similar to continued fractions of real numbers): \[\sqrt D=a_0+\dfrac{1}{a_1+\dfrac{1}{a_2+\dfrac{1}{\ddots}}},\quad a_i\text{ polynomials in }X.\] Such continued fractions were first considered by Abel in 1826, and later by Chebyshev. It turns out they are rarely periodic unless $D$ is defined over a finite field. Around 2001 van der Poorten studied non-periodic continued fractions of $\sqrt D$, with $D$ defined over the rationals, and simultaneously the…
Rational approximations to a square root $\sqrt{k}$ can be produced by iterating the transformation $f(x) = (dx+k)/(x+d)$ starting from $\infty$ for any positive integer $d$. We show that these approximations coincide infinitely often with continued fraction convergents if and only if $4d^2/(k-d^2)$ is an integer, in which case the continued fraction has a rich structure. It consists of the concatenation of the continued fractions of certain explicitly definable rational numbers, and it belongs to one of infinitely many families of continued fractions whose terms vary linearly in two parameter…
We provide several results on the diophantine properties of continued fractions on the Heisenberg group, many of which are analogous to classical results for real continued fractions. In particular, we show an analog of Khinchin's theorem and that convergents are also best approximants up to a constant factor of the denominator.
For any real number $x \in [0,1)$, we denote by $q_n(x)$ the denominator of the $n$-th convergent of the continued fraction expansion of $x$ $(n \in \mathbb{N})$. It is well-known that the Lebesgue measure of the set of points $x \in [0,1)$ for which $\log q_n(x)/n$ deviates away from $π^2/(12\log2)$ decays to zero as $n$ tends to infinity. In this paper, we study the rate of this decay by giving an upper bound and a lower bound. What is interesting is that the upper bound is closely related to the Hausdorff dimensions of the level sets for $\log q_n(x)/n$. As a consequence, we obtain a large …
We give continued fraction expansions of the generating functions of Bernoulli numbers, Cauchy numbers, Euler numbers, harmonic numbers, and their generalized or related numbers. In particular, we focus on explicit forms of the convergents of these continued fraction expansions. Linear fractional transformations of such continued fractions are also discussed. We show more continued fraction expansion for different numbers and types, in particular, on Cauchy numbers.
Motivated by applications in noncommutative geometry we prove several value range estimates for even convergents and tails, and odd reverse sequences of Stieltjes type continued fractions with bounded ratio of consecutive elements, and show how those estimates control growth of solutions of a system of discrete Dirac equations.
We use the Schmidt Subspace Theorem to establish the transcendence of a class of quasi-periodic continued fractions. This improves earlier works of Maillet and of A. Baker. We also improve an old result of Davenport and Roth on the rate of increase of the denominators of the convergents to any real algebraic number.
The study of combinatorial properties of mathematical objects is a very important research field and continued fractions have been deeply studied in this sense. However, multidimensional continued fractions, which are a generalization arising from an algorithm due to Jacobi, have been poorly investigated in this sense, up to now. In this paper, we propose a combinatorial interpretation of the convergents of multidimensional continued fractions in terms of counting some particular tilings, generalizing some results that hold for classical continued fractions.
The Rosen fractions are an infinite set of continued fraction algorithms, each giving expansions of real numbers in terms of certain algebraic integers. For each, we give a best possible upper bound for the minimum in appropriate consecutive blocks of approximation coefficients (in the sense of Diophantine approximation by continued fraction convergents). We also obtain metrical results for large blocks of ``bad'' approximations.
For a complex polynomial $D(t)$ of even degree, one may define the continued fraction of $\sqrt{D(t)}$. This was found relevant already by Abel in 1826, and later by Chebyshev, concerning integration of (hyperelliptic) differentials; they realized that, contrary to the classical case of square roots of positive integers treated by Lagrange and Galois, we do not always have pre-periodicity of the partial quotients. In this paper we shall prove that, however, a correct analogue of Lagrange's theorem still exists in full generality: pre-periodicity of the {\it degrees} of the partial quotients al…
We study the Kronecker symbol $\left(\frac st\right)$ for the sequence of the convergents $s/t$ of a purely periodic continued fraction expansion. Whereas the corresponding sequence of Jacobi symbols is always periodic, it turns out that the sequence of Kronecker symbols may be aperiodic. Our main result describes the period length in the periodic case in terms of the period length of the sequence of Jacobi symbols and gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the occurrence of the aperiodic case.
Multidimensional continued fractions generalize classical continued fractions with the aim of providing periodic representations of algebraic irrationalities by means of integer sequences. However, there does not exist any algorithm that provides a periodic multidimensional continued fraction when algebraic irrationalities are given as inputs. In this paper, we provide a characterization for periodicity of Jacobi--Perron algorithm by means of linear recurrence sequences. In particular, we prove that partial quotients of a multidimensional continued fraction are periodic if and only if numerato…
Let $z$ be a real quadratic irrational. We compare the asymptotic behavior of Dedekind sums $S(p_k,q_k)$ belonging to convergents $p_k/q_k$ of the {\em regular} continued fraction expansion of $z$ with that of Dedekind sums $S(s_j/t_j)$ belonging to convergents $s_j/t_j$ of the {\em negative regular} continued fraction expansion of $z$. Whereas the three main cases of this behavior are closely related, a more detailed study of the most interesting case (in which the Dedekind sums remain bounded) exhibits some marked differences, since the cluster points depend on the respective periods of thes…
We study the generalized continued fraction expansions of complex numbers in term of elements from Euclidean subrings, especially Gaussian or Eisenstein integers, in a general framework as pursued in [3] and [1]. We introduce a common approach to studying the continued fraction expansions of zeroes of binary forms, via consideration of the action of the general linear group, and apply it to discuss expansions of quadratic surds on the one hand and of badly approximable numbers on the other hand. Also, we generalize the property of the simple continued fraction expansions that the convergents a…
In this article, for a certain subset $\mathcal{X}$ of the extended set of rational numbers, we introduce the notion of {\it best $\mathcal{X}$-approximations} of a real number. The notion of best $\mathcal{X}$-approximation is analogous to that of best rational approximation. We explore these approximations with the help of $\mathcal{F}_{p^l}$-continued fractions, where $p$ is a prime and $l\in\mathbb{N}$, we show that the convergents of the $\mathcal{F}_{p^l}$-continued fraction expansion of a real number $x$ satisfying certain maximal conditions are exactly the best $\mathcal{F}_{p^l}$-appr…
Fundamental to the theory of continued fractions is the fact that every infinite continued fraction with positive integer coefficients converges; however, it is unknown precisely which continued fractions with integer coefficients (not necessarily positive) converge. Here we present a simple test that determines whether an integer continued fraction converges or diverges. In addition, for convergent continued fractions the test specifies whether the limit is rational or irrational. An attractive way to visualise integer continued fractions is to model them as paths on the Farey graph, which is…
We give an elementary geometric proof using Ford circles that the convergents of the continued fraction expansion of a real number $α$ coincide with the rationals that are best approximations of the second kind of $α$.
Several years ago the second author playing with different "recognizers of real constants", e.g., the LLL algorithm, the Plouffe inverter, etc. found empirically the following formula. Let $p_n/q_n$ denote the $n$th convergent of the continued fraction of the constant $e$, then $$ \sum_{n \geq 0} |q_n e - p_n| = \frac{e}{4} \left(- 1 + 10 \sum_{n \geq 0} \frac{(-1)^n}{(n+1)! (2n^2 + 7n + 3)}\right). $$ The purpose of the present paper is to prove this formula and to give similar formulas for some powers of $e$.
We define a continued fraction map associated with the $\mathfrak o(\sqrt{-3})$-module $\mathcal J = η\cdot\mathfrak o(\sqrt{-3})$, $η= \frac{3 + \sqrt{-3}}{2}$, which is an Eisenstein field version of the continued fraction map associated with $\mathfrak o(\sqrt{-1}) \cdot (1 + i)$ defined by J.~Hurwitz in the case of the Gaussian field. Together with $T$, we show that all complex numbers $z$ can be expanded as $\mathcal J$-coefficients. We discuss some basic properties of these continued fraction expansions such as the monotonicity of the absolutely value of the principal convergent $q_{n}$ …
We prove a quantitative distortion theorem for iterated function systems that generate sets of continued fractions. As a consequence, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of any set of real or complex continued fractions. These bounds are solutions to Moran-type equations in the convergents that can be easily implemented in a computer algebra system.
Let $D,Q$ be natural numbers, $(D,Q)=1$, such that $D/Q>1$ and $D/Q$ is not a square. Let $q$ be the smallest divisor of $Q$ such that $Q|\, q^2$. We show that the units $>1$ of the ring $\mathbb Z[\sqrt{Dq^2/Q}]$ are connected with certain convergents of $\sqrt{D/Q}$. Among these units, the units of $\mathbb Z[\sqrt{DQ}]$ play a special role, inasmuch as they correspond to the convergents of $\sqrt{D/Q}$ that occur just before the end of each period. We also show that the last-mentioned units allow reading the (periodic) continued fraction expansion of certain quadratic irrationals from the (…
A continued fractions based verification of the Hurwitz values for the Hecke triangle groups is given, completing a program of Lehner's. Ergodic theory shows that Diophantine approximation by mediant convergents of the Rosen continued fractions is sufficient to determine the values that Haas and Series found by hyperbolic geometry.
We give explicit and asymptotic lower bounds for the quantity $|e^{s/t}-M/N|$ by studying a generalized continued fraction expansion of $e^{s/t}$. In cases $|s|\geq 3$ we improve existing results by extracting a large common factor from the numerators and the denominators of the convergents of that generalized continued fraction.
We consider new series expansions for variants of the so-termed ordinary geometric square series generating functions originally defined in the recent article titled "Square Series Generating Function Transformations" (arXiv: 1609.02803). Whereas the original square series transformations article adapts known generating function transformations to construct integral representations for these square series functions enumerating the square powers of $q^{n^2}$ for some fixed non-zero $q$ with $|q| < 1$, we study the expansions of these special series through power series generated by Jacobi-type …
We describe various properties of continued fraction expansions of complex numbers in terms of Gaussian integers. Numerous distinct such expansions are possible for a complex number. They can be arrived at through various algorithms, as also in a more general way from what we call "iteration sequences". We consider in this broader context the analogues of the Lagrange theorem characterizing quadratic surds, the growth properties of the denominators of the convergents, and the overall relation between sequences satisfying certain conditions, in terms of nonoccurrence of certain finite blocks, a…
This paper is a sequel to our previous work in which we found a combinatorial realization of continued fractions as quotients of the number of perfect matchings of snake graphs. We show how this realization reflects the convergents of the continued fractions as well as the Euclidean division algorithm. We apply our findings to establish results on sums of squares, palindromic continued fractions, Markov numbers and other statements in elementary number theory.
Euler gave recipes for converting alternating series of two types, I and II, into equivalent continued fractions, i.e., ones whose convergents equal the partial sums. A condition we prove for irrationality of a continued fraction then allows easy proofs that $e,\sin1$, and the primorial constant are irrational. Our main result is that, if a series of type II is equivalent to a simple continued fraction, then the sum is transcendental and its irrationality measure exceeds $2$. We construct all $\aleph_0^{\aleph_0}=\mathfrak{c}$ such series and recover the transcendence of the Davison--Shallit a…
A landmark theorem in the metric theory of continued fractions begins this way: Select a non-negative real function $f$ defined on the positive integers and a real number $x$, and form the partial sums $s_n$ of $f$ evaluated at the partial quotients $a_1,..., a_n$ in the continued fraction expansion for $x$. Does the sequence $\{s_n/n\}$ have a limit as $n\rar\infty$? In 1935 A. Y. Khinchin proved that the answer is yes for almost every $x$, provided that the function $f$ does not grow too quickly. In this paper we are going to explore a natural reformulation of this problem in which the funct…
We study the strong convergence of certain multidimensional continued fraction algorithms. In particular, in the two-dimensional case, we prove that the second Lyapunov exponent of Selmer's algorithm is negative and bound it away from zero. Moreover, we give heuristic results on several other continued fraction algorithms. Our results indicate that all classical multidimensional continued fraction algorithms cease to be strongly convergent for high dimensions. The only exception seems to be the Arnoux-Rauzy algorithm which, however, is defined only on a set of measure zero.
A converse method to the Construction of Salem (1945) of convergent families of Salem numbers is investigated in terms of an association between Salem polynomials and Hurwitz quotients via expansive polynomials of small Mahler measure. This association makes use of Bertin-Boyd's Theorem A (1995) of interlacing of conjugates on the unit circle; in this context, a Salem number $β$ is produced and coded by an m-tuple of positive rational numbers characterizing the (SITZ) Stieltjes continued fraction of the corresponding Hurwitz quotient (alternant). The subset of Stieltjes continued fractions ove…
We investigate two Stieltjes continued fractions given by the paperfolding sequence and the Rudin-Shapiro sequence. By explicitly describing certain subsequences of the convergents $P_n(x)/Q_n(x)$ modulo $4$, we give the formal power series expansions (modulo $4$) of these two continued fractions and prove that they are congruent modulo $4$ to algebraic series in $\mathbb{Z}[[x]]$. Therefore, the coefficient sequences of the formal power series expansions are $2$-automatic. Write $Q_{n}(x)=\sum_{i\ge 0}a_{n,i}x^{i}$. Then $(Q_{n}(x))_{n\ge 0}$ defines a two-dimensional coefficient sequence $(a…
Multidimensional continued fractions (MCFs) were introduced by Jacobi and Perron in order to generalize the classical continued fractions. In this paper, we propose an introductive fundamental study about MCFs in the field of the $p$--adic numbers $\mathbb Q_p$. First, we introduce them from a formal point of view, i.e., without considering a specific algorithm that produces the partial quotients of a MCF, and we perform a general study about their convergence in $\mathbb Q_p$. In particular, we derive some conditions about their convergence and we prove that convergent MCFs always strongly co…
We show that the growth rate of denominator $Q_n$ of the $n$-th convergent of negative expansion of $x$ and the rate of approximation: $$ \frac{\log{n}}{n}\log{\left|x-\frac{P_n}{Q_n}\right|}\rightarrow -\frac{π^2}{3} \quad \text{in measure.} $$ for a.e. $x$. In the course of the proof, we reprove known inspiring results that arithmetic mean of digits of negative continued fraction converges to 3 in measure, although the limit inferior is 2, and the limit superior is infinite almost everywhere.
Let the continued fraction expansion of any irrational number $t \in (0,1)$ be denoted by $[0,a_{1}(t),a_{2}(t),...]$ and let the i-th convergent of this continued fraction expansion be denoted by $c_{i}(t)/d_{i}(t)$. Let \[ S=\{t \in (0,1): a_{i+1}(t) \geq ϕ^{d_{i}(t)} \text{infinitely often}\}, \] where $ϕ= (\sqrt{5}+1)/2$. Let $Y_{S} =\{\exp(2 πi t): t \in S \}$. It is shown that if $y \in Y_{S}$ then the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, R(y), diverges at y. S is an uncountable set of measure zero. It is also shown that there is an uncountable set of points, $G \subset Y_{S}$, such that…
Extending the classical Legendre's result, we describe all solutions of the inequality |x - a/b| < c/b^2 in terms of convergents of continued fraction expansion of x. Namely, we show that a/b = (rp_{m+1} +- sp_m) / (rq_{m+1} +- sq_m) for some nonnegative integers m,r,s such that rs < 2c. As an application of this result, we describe a modification of Verheul and van Tilborg variant of Wiener's attack on RSA cryptosystem with small secret exponent.
The present paper is in a sense a continuation of \cite{PLS}, it relies on the notation and some results. The problem tackled in both papers is the nature of the continued fraction expansion of $\sqrt[3]{2}$: are the partial quotients bounded or not. Numerical experiments suggest an even stronger result on the lines of Kuzmin statistics. Here we apply different sets of bases for the vector space $V$, where the adjunction ring $\ZZ\lbrack \sqrt[3]{2} \rbrack$ lives. And as a result we get a criterion for continued fraction convergents in terms of the coefficient vector from a lattice.
We look at the rate of growth of the partial quotients of the infinite continued fraction expansion of an irrational number relative to the rate of approximation of the number by its convergents. In non-generic cases the Hausdorff dimension of some exceptional sets is computed.
Hermite best approximation vectors of a real number $θ$ were introduced by Lagarias. A nonzero vector (p, q) $\in$ Z x N is a Hermite best approximation vector of $θ$ if there exists $Δ$ > 0 such that (p -- q$θ$) 2 + q 2 /$Δ$ $\le$ (a -- b$θ$) 2 + b 2 /$Δ$ for all nonzero (a, b) $\in$ Z 2. Hermite observed that if q > 0 then the fraction p/q must be a convergent of the continued fraction expansion of $θ$ and Lagarias pointed out that some convergents are not associated with a Hermite best approximation vectors. In this note we show that the almost sure proportion of Hermite best approximation …
We have calculated on the computer the sum $\bar{\BB}_M$ of reciprocals of all 47 known Mersenne primes with the accuracy of over 12000000 decimal digits. Next we developed $\bar{\BB}_M$ into the continued fraction and calculated geometrical means of the partial denominators of the continued fraction expansion of $\bar{\BB}_M$. We get values converging to the Khinchin's constant. Next we calculated the $n$-th square roots of the denominators of the $n$-th convergents of these continued fractions obtaining values approaching the Khinchin-L{è}vy constant. These two results suggests that the sum …
