We study the root distribution of some univariate polynomials satisfying a recurrence of order two with linear and quadratic polynomial coefficients. We show that the set of non-isolated limits of zeros of the polynomials is the closure of an arc, a circle, an interval or its exterior under the real line, the union of at most two different shapes of the above cases expect the union of an arc and a circle, and some degenerate forms.
Using the minimal parameter sequence of a given chain sequence, we introduce the concept of complementary chain sequences, which we view as perturbations of chain sequences. Using the relation between these complementary chain sequences and the corresponding Verblunsky coefficients, the para-orthogonal polynomials and the associated Szegö polynomials are analyzed. Two illustrations, one involving Gaussian hypergeometric functions and the other involving Carathéodory functions are also provided. A connection between these two illustrations by means of complementary chain sequences is also obser…
We give a brief exposition of the proof of the Cayley-Salmon theorem and its recent role in incidence geometry. Even when we don't use the properties of ruled surfaces explicitly, the regime in which we have interesting results in point-line incidence problems often coincides with the regime in which lines are organized into ruled surfaces.
The main perpose of this paper is to sudy the roots of a familly of polynomials that arise from a linear recurrences associated to Pascal's triangle and their zero attractor, using an analytical methods based on conformal mappings.
In this paper, we study the root distribution of some univariate polynomials satisfying a recurrence of order two with linear polynomial coefficients. We show that the set of non-isolated limits of zeros of the polynomials is either an arc, or a circle, or a "lollipop", or an interval. As an application, we discover a sufficient and necessary condition for the universal real-rootedness of the polynomials, subject to certain sign condition on the coefficients of the recurrence. Moreover, we obtain the sharp bound for all the zeros when they are real.
We consider a class of operators defined by taking averages along polynomial sequences in discrete nilpotent groups. In this paper we prove $L^2$ boundedness of discrete singular Radon transforms along general polynomial sequences in discrete nilpotent groups of step 2.
We apply a symbolic approach of the general quadratic decomposition of polynomial sequences - presented in a previous article referenced herein - to polynomial sequences fulfilling specific orthogonal conditions towards two given functionals $u_{0},u_{1}$ belonging to the dual of the vector space of polynomials with coefficients in $\mathbb{C}$. The general quadratic decomposition produces four new sets of polynomials whose properties are investigated with the help of the mentioned symbolic approach together with further commands which inquire relevant features, as for instance, the classical …
Given $\{P_n \}$ a sequence of monic orthogonal polynomials, we analyze their linear combinations $\{Q_n \}$with constant coefficients and fixed length $k+1$. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the orthogonality of the monic sequence $\{Q_n \}$ as well as an interesting interpretation in terms of the Jacobi matrices associated with $\{P_n \}$ and $\{Q_n \}$. Moreover, in the case $k=2$, we characterize the families $\{P_n \}$ such that the corresponding polynomials $\{Q_n \}$ are also orthogonal.
Let $Λ$ be a finite set of nonnegative integers, and let $\mathcal P(Λ)$ be the linear hull of the monomials $z^k$ with $k\inΛ$, viewed as a subspace of $L^1$ on the unit circle. We characterize the extreme and exposed points of the unit ball in $\mathcal P(Λ)$.
Motivated by the effective impact of the Pascal functional and the Wronskian matrices, we investigate several identities and differential equation for the Sheffer-Appell polynomial sequence by using matrix algebra. The matrix approach, which we have used in this article, is convenient to derive the generating functions of the Sheffer-Appell polynomial sequence. By means of examples, we apply and also illustrate our results to an extended class of polynomial sequences.
We present a method to obtain weight functions associated with linear and quadratic lattices that yield discrete orthogonality with respect to a quasi-definite moment functional of the orthogonal polynomial sequences in the Askey scheme, with the exception of the Jacobi, Bessel, Laguerre, and Hermite polynomials.
We obtain new explicit formulas for the recurrence coefficients of the q-orthogonal polynomial sequences in a class that extends the q-Askey scheme. Our formulas express the recurrence coefficients in terms of four parameters that determine the zeroes and poles. By direct substitution of particular values for the four parameters we obtain all the polynomial sequences in the q-Askey scheme, including the Askey-Wilson and the Racah polynomials. We also obtain some families of sequences that may be new.
We obtain weight functions associated with $q$-linear and $q$-quadratic lattices that yield discrete orthogonality with respect to a quasi-definite moment functional for the Askey-Wilson polynomials and all the polynomial sequences in the q-Askey scheme, with the exception of the continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials.
In this article, a new approach based on linear algebra is adopted to study a hybrid Sheffer polynomial sequences. The recurrence relations and differential equation for these polynomials are derived by using the properties and relationships between the Pascal functional matrices and the Wronskian matrices. The corresponding results for some mixed type Sheffer polynomials are also obtained.
We present some families of polynomials related to the moments of weight functions of hypergeometric type. We also consider different types of generating functions, and give several examples.
In recent years, chain sequences and their perturbations have played a significant role in characterising the orthogonal polynomials both on the real line as well as on the unit circle. In this note, a particular disturbance of the chain sequence related to orthogonal polynomials having their true interval of orthogonality as a subset of $[0,\infty)$ is studied leading to an important consequence related to the kernel polynomials. Such perturbations are shown to be related to transformations of symmetric measures. An illustration using the generalized Laguerre polynomials is also provided.
In this paper, certain mixed special polynomial families associated with Appell sequences are introduced and their properties are established. Further, operational rules providing connections between these families and the known special polynomials are established, which are used to derive the identities and results for the members of these new families. Determinantal definitions of the polynomials associated with Appell family is also derived. The approach presented is general.
In this article, we give a sequence of operators for producing an approximation result. The relation between the rate of approximation of sequence operators including Dunkl variant of exponential function with first and second-order modulus of continuity are shown. A specific application of sequence of operators which include Gould-Hopper type polynomials is constructed.
By means of the Bessel operator a polynomial sequence is constructed to which several properties are given. Among them, its explicit expression, the connection with the Euler numbers, its integral representation via the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform. Despite its non-orthogonality, it is possible to associate to the canonical element of its dual sequence a positive-definite measure as long as certain stronger constraints are imposed.
The large $n$ behaviour of the hypergeometric polynomial $$\FFF{-n}{\sfrac12}{\sfrac12}{\sfrac12-n}{\sfrac12-n}{-1}$$ is considered by using integral representations of this polynomial. This ${}_3F_2$ polynomial is associated with the Catalan-Larcombe-French sequence. Several other representations are mentioned, with references to the literature, and another asymptotic method is described by using a generating function of the sequence. The results are similar to those obtained by Clark (2004) who used a binomial sum for obtaining an asymptotic expansion.
We construct a set $H$ of orthogonal polynomial sequences that contains all the families in the Askey scheme and the $q$-Askey scheme. The polynomial sequences in $H$ are solutions of a generalized first-order difference equation which is determined by three linearly recurrent sequences of numbers. Two of these sequences are solutions of a difference equation of order three and the other sequence satisfies a related difference equation of order five. We obtain explicit expressions for the coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials and for the generalized moments with respect to a basis of Newt…
We present a study of a specific kind of lowering operator, herein called $Λ$, which is defined as a finite sum of lowering operators, proving that this configuration can be altered, for instance, by the use of Stirling numbers. We characterize the polynomial sequences fulfilling an Appell relation with respect to $Λ$, and considering a concrete cubic decomposition of a simple Appell sequence, we prove that the polynomial component sequences are $Λ$-Appell, with $Λ$ defined as previously, although by a three term sum. Ultimately, we prove the non-existence of orthogonal polynomial sequences wh…
Let $μ$ be a probability measure with an infinite compact support on $\mathbb{R}$. Let us further assume that $(F_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ is a sequence of orthogonal polynomials for $μ$ where $(f_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ is a sequence of nonlinear polynomials and $F_n:=f_n\circ\dots\circ f_1$ for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We prove that if there is an $s_0\in\mathbb{N}$ such that $0$ is a root of $f_n^\prime$ for each $n>s_0$ then the distance between any two zeros of an orthogonal polynomial for $μ$ of a given degree greater than $1$ has a lower bound in terms of the distance between the set of critical points a…
In the present paper we consider $F_k(x)=x^{k}-\sum_{t=0}^{k-1}x^t,$ the characteristic polynomial of the $k$-th order Fibonacci sequence, the latter denoted $G(k,l).$ We determine the limits of the real roots of certain odd and even degree polynomials related to the derivatives and integrals of $F_k(x),$ that form infinite sequences of polynomials, of increasing degree. In particular, as $k \to \infty,$ the limiting values of the zeros are determined, for both odd and even cases. It is also shown, in both cases, that the convergence is monotone for sufficiently large degree. We give an upper …
