We construct a set $H$ of orthogonal polynomial sequences that contains all the families in the Askey scheme and the $q$-Askey scheme. The polynomial sequences in $H$ are solutions of a generalized first-order difference equation which is determined by three linearly recurrent sequences of numbers. Two of these sequences are solutions of a difference equation of order three and the other sequence satisfies a related difference equation of order five.
We obtain explicit expressions for the coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials and for the generalized moments with respect to a basis of Newton type of the space of polynomials. We also obtain explicit formulas for the coefficients of the three-term recurrence relation satisfied by the polynomial sequences in $H$.
The set $H$ contains all the 15 families in the Askey scheme and all the 29 families in the $q$-Askey scheme. Each of these families is obtained by direct substitution of appropriate values for the parameters in our general formulas. The only cases that require some limits are the Hermite and continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials. We present the values of the parameters for some of the families.
We generalize generating functions for hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials, namely Jacobi, Gegenbauer, Laguerre, and Wilson polynomials. These generalizations of generating functions are accomplished through series rearrangement using connection relations with one free parameter for these orthogonal polynomials. We also use orthogonality relations to determine corresponding definite integrals.
The study of $-1$ orthogonal polynomials viewed as $q =-1$ limits of the $q$-orthogonal polynomials is pursued. This paper present the continuous polynomials part of the $-1$ analog of the $q$-Askey scheme. A compendium of the properties of all the continuous $-1$ hypergeometric polynomials and their connections is provided.
We list the so-called Askey-scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. In chapter 1 we give the definition, the orthogonality relation, the three term recurrence relation and generating functions of all classes of orthogonal polynomials in this scheme. In chapeter 2 we give all limit relation between different classes of orthogonal polynomials listed in the Askey-scheme. In chapter 3 we list the q-analogues of the polynomials in the Askey-scheme. We give their definition, orthogonality relation, three term recurrence relation and generating functions. In chapter 4 we give the limit relat…
We show how to obtain linear combinations of polynomials in an orthogonal sequence $\{P_n\}_{n\geq 0}$, such as $Q_{n,k}(x)=\sum\limits_{i=0}^k a_{n,i}P_{n-i}(x)$, $a_{n,0}a_{n,k}\neq0$, that characterize quasi-orthogonal polynomials of order $k\le n-1$. The polynomials in the sequence $\{Q_{n,k}\}_{n\geq 0}$ are obtained from $P_{n}$, by making use of parameter shifts. We use an algorithmic approach to find these linear combinations for each family applicable and these equations are used to prove quasi-orthogonality of order $k$. We also determine the location of the extreme zeros of the quas…
We present a method to obtain weight functions associated with linear and quadratic lattices that yield discrete orthogonality with respect to a quasi-definite moment functional of the orthogonal polynomial sequences in the Askey scheme, with the exception of the Jacobi, Bessel, Laguerre, and Hermite polynomials.
We derive generalized generating functions for basic hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials by applying connection relations with one free parameter to them. In particular, we generalize generating functions for the Askey-Wilson, continuous $q$-ultraspherical/Rogers, little $q$-Laguerre/Wall, and $q$-Laguerre polynomials. Depending on what type of orthogonality these polynomials satisfy, we derive corresponding definite integrals, infinite series, bilateral infinite series, and $q$-integrals.
We construct noncomplete orthogonal systems on the ray $[0,\infty)$ that look like Jacobi polynomials $P_n(x)$ after a shift of degree $n\mapsto n+a$, where $a$ is a real constant. These systems are solutions of some exotic Sturm-Liouville problem for hypergeometric differential operators. We obtain the explicit spectral decomposition for these problems.
We use connection relations and series rearrangement to generalize generating functions for several higher continuous orthogonal polynomials in the Askey scheme, namely the Wilson, continuous dual Hahn, continuous Hahn, and Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials. We also determine corresponding definite integrals using the orthogonality relations for these polynomials.
In this paper we study the following family of hypergeometric polynomials: $y_n(x) = \frac{ (-1)^ρ}{ n! } x^n {}_2 F_0(-n,ρ;-;-\frac{1}{x})$, depending on a parameter $ρ\in\mathbb{N}$. Differential equations of orders $ρ+1$ and $2$ for these polynomials are given. A recurrence relation for $y_n$ is derived as well. Polynomials $y_n$ are Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle with an explicit matrix measure.
Many limits are known for hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials that occur in the Askey scheme. We show how asymptotic representations can be derived by using the generating functions of the polynomials. For example, we discuss the asymptotic representation of the Meixner-Pollaczek, Jacobi, Meixner, and Krawtchouk polynomials in terms of Laguerre polynomials.
We investigate the recurrence coefficients of discrete orthogonal polynomials on the non-negative integers with hypergeometric weights and show that they satisfy a system of non-linear difference equations and a non-linear second order differential equation in one of the parameters of the weights. The non-linear difference equations form a pair of discrete Painlevé equations and the differential equation is the $σ$-form of the sixth Painlevé equation. We briefly investigate the asymptotic behavior of the recurrence coefficients as $n\to \infty$ using the discrete Painlevé equations.
We introduce and analyse a new family of multiple orthogonal polynomials of hypergeometric type with respect to two measures supported on the positive real line which can be described in terms of confluent hypergeometric functions of the second kind. These two measures form a Nikishin system. Our focus is on the multiple orthogonal polynomials for indices on the step line. The sequences of the derivatives of both type I and type II polynomials with respect to these indices are again multiple orthogonal and they correspond to the original sequences with shifted parameters. For the type I polyno…
We describe the utility of integral representations for sums of basic hypergeometric functions. In particular we use these to derive an infinite sequence of transformations for symmetrizations over certain variables which the functions possess. These integral representations were studied by Bailey, Slater, Askey, Roy, Gasper and Rahman and were also used to facilitate the computation of certain outstanding problems in the theory of basic hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials in the $q$-Askey scheme. We also generalize and give consequences and transformation formulas for some fundamental integ…
Orthogonal polynomials for the multivariate hypergeometric distribution are defined on lattices in polyhedral domains in $\RR^d$. Their structures are studied through a detailed analysis of classical Hahn polynomials with negative integer parameters. Factorization of the Hahn polynomials is explored and used to explain the relation between the index set of orthogonal polynomials and the lattice set in polyhedral domain. In the multivariate case, these constructions lead to nontrivial families of hypergeometric polynomials vanishing on lattice polyhedra. The generating functions and bispectral …
We introduce the notion of "hypergeometric" polynomials with respect to Newtonian bases. These polynomials are eigenfunctions ($L P_n(x) = λ_n P_n(x)$) of some abstract operator $L$ which is 2-diagonal in the Newtonian basis $φ_n(x)$: $L φ_n(x) = λ_n φ_n(x) + τ_n(x) φ_{n-1}(x)$ with some coefficients $λ_n$, $τ_n$. We find the necessary and sufficient conditions for the polynomials $P_n(x)$ to be orthogonal. For the special cases where the sets $λ_n$ correspond to the classical grids, we find the complete solution to these conditions and observe that it leads to the most general Askey-Wilson po…
We produce two-dimensional contiguous relations for generalized hypergeometric functions by starting with linearization coefficients for some continuous generalized hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials in the Askey-scheme.
We first show how one can obtain Al-Salam--Chihara polynomials, continuous dual $q$-Hahn polynomials, and Askey--Wilson polynomials from the little $q$-Laguerre and the little $q$-Jacobi polynomials by using special transformations. This procedure is then extended to obtain multiple Askey--Wilson, multiple continuous dual $q$-Hahn, and multiple Al-Salam--Chihara polynomials from the multiple little $q$-Laguerre and the multiple little $q$-Jacobi polynomials.
Explicit solutions for the three-term recurrence satisfied by associated continuous dual $q$-Hahn polynomials are obtained. A minimal solution is identified and an explicit expression for the related continued fraction is derived. The absolutely continuous component of the spectral measure is obtained. Eleven limit cases are discussed in some detail. These include associated big $q$-Laguerre , associated Wall, associated Al-Salam-Chihara, associated Al-Salam-Carlitz I, and associated continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials.
We give some structural formulas for the family of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials of size $2\times 2$ introduced by C. Calderón et al. in an earlier work, which are common eigenfunctions of a differential operator of hypergeometric type. Specifically, we give a Rodrigues formula that allows us to write this family of polynomials explicitly in terms of the classical Jacobi polynomials, and write, for the sequence of orthonormal polynomials, the three-term recurrence relation and the Christoffel-Darboux identity. We obtain a Pearson equation, which enables us to prove that the sequence of …
We find all polynomials solutions $P_n(x)$ of the abstract "hypergeometric" equation $L P_n(x) = λ_n P_n(x)$, where $L$ is a linear operator sending any polynomial of degree $n$ to a polynomial of the same degree with the property that $L$ is two-diagonal in the monomial basis, i.e. $L x^n = λ_n x^n + μ_n x^{n-1}$ with arbitrary nonzero coefficients $λ_n, μ_n$ . Under obvious nondegenerate conditions, the polynomial eigensolutions $L P_n(x) = λ_n P_n(x)$ are unique. The main result of the paper is a classification of all {\it orthogonal} polynomials $P_n(x)$ of such type, i.e. $P_n(x)$ are ass…
It turned out that the partial sums $g_n(z) = \sum_{k=0}^n \frac{(a_1)_k ... (a_p)_k}{(b_1)_k ... (b_q)_k} \frac{z^k}{k!}$, of the generalized hypergeometric series ${}_p F_q(a_1,...,a_p; b_1,...,b_q;z)$, with parameters $a_j,b_l\in\mathbb{C}\backslash\{ 0,-1,-2,... \}$, are Sobolev orthogonal polynomials. The corresponding monic polynomials $G_n(z)$ are polynomials of $R_I$ type, and therefore they are related to biorthogonal rational functions. Polynomials $g_n$ possess a differential equation (in $z$), and a recurrence relation (in $n$). We study integral representations for $g_n$, and some…
A new set of multiple orthogonal polynomials of both type I and type II with respect to two weight functions involving Gauss' hypergeometric function on the interval $(0,1)$ is studied. This type of polynomials have direct applications in the investigation of singular values of products of Ginibre matrices, in the analysis of rational solutions to Painlevé equations and are connected with branched continued fractions and total positivity problems in combinatorics. The pair of orthogonality measures is shown to be a Nikishin system and to satisfy a matrix Pearson-type differential equation. The…
The sequence $\{\,_2ϕ_1(q^{-k},q^{b+1};\,q^{-\overline{b}-k+1};\, q, q^{-\overline{b}+1/2} z)\}_{k \geq 0}$ of basic hypergeometric polynomials is known to be orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to the weight function $|(q^{1/2}e^{iθ};\,q)_{\infty}/(q^{b+1/2}e^{iθ};\,q)_{\infty}|^2$. This result, where one must take the parameters $q$ and $b$ to be $0 < q < 1$ and $\Re(b) > -1/2$, is due to P.I. Pastro \cite{Pastro-1985}. In the present manuscript we deal with the orthogonal polynomials $\hatΦ_{n}(b;.)$ and $\checkΦ_{n}(b;.)$ on the unit circle with respect to the two parametric familie…
Explicit expressions for the Hahn multiple polynomials of type I, in terms of Kampé de Fériet hypergeometric series, are given. Orthogonal and biorthogonal relations are proven. Then, part of the Askey scheme for multiple orthogonal polynomials type I is completed. In particular, explicit expressions in terms of generalized hypergeometric series and Kampé de Fériet hypergeometric series, are given for the multiple orthogonal polynomials of type I for the Jacobi-Piñeiro, Meixner I, Meixner II, Kravchuk, Laguerre I, Laguerre II and Charlier families.
We present some families of polynomials related to the moments of weight functions of hypergeometric type. We also consider different types of generating functions, and give several examples.
Via the solutions of systems of algebraic equations of Bethe Ansatz type, we arrive at bounds for the zeros of orthogonal (basic) hypergeometric polynomials belonging to the Askey-Wilson, Wilson and continuous Hahn families.
For little q-Jacobi polynomials and q-Hahn polynomials we give particular q-hypergeometric series representations in which the termwise q=0 limit can be taken. When rewritten in matrix form, these series representations can be viewed as LU factorizations. We develop a general theory of LU factorizations related to complete systems of orthogonal polynomials with discrete orthogonality relations which admit a dual system of orthogonal polynomials. For the q=0 orthogonal limit functions we discuss interpretations on p-adic spaces. In the little 0-Jacobi case we also discuss product formulas.
In this contribution we consider sequences of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to a Sobolev-type inner product \[ \langle f,g \rangle _{S}:= \langle {\bf u}, f g\rangle +N (\mathscr D_q f)(α) (\mathscr D _{q}g)(α),\qquad α\in \mathbb R, \quad N\ge 0, \] where $\bf u$ is a $q$-classical linear functional and $\mathscr D _{q}$ is the $q$-derivative operator. We obtain some algebraic properties of these polynomials such as an explicit representation, a five-term recurrence relation as well as a second order linear $q$-difference holonomic equation fulfilled by such polynomials. We presen…
The Cholesky factorization of the moment matrix is considered for discrete orthogonal polynomials of hypergeometrical type. We derive the Laguerre-Freud equations when the first moments of the weights are given by the ${}_1F_2$, ${}_2F_2$ and ${}_3F_2$ generalized hypergeometrical functions.
A correlation function of the classical orthogonal polynomials is defined and determined. The correlation function obeys a second order difference equation in two variables. The correlation function for the Gegenbauer, Chebyshev and Legendre polynomials can be written as a 4F3 hypergeometric function. For the Jacobi polynomials the result is an F2 Appell function. For the Generalized Laguerre polynomials the result is a confluent hypergeometric function and for the Hermite polynomials there rests only a single term.
The second order hypergeometric q-difference operator is studied for the value c=-q. For certain parameter regimes the corresponding recurrence relation can be related to a symmetric operator on the Hilbert space l^2(Z). The operator has deficiency indices (1,1) and we describe as explicitly as possible the spectral resolutions of the self-adjoint extensions. This gives rise to one-parameter orthogonality relations for sums of two 2\phi1-series. In particular, we find that the Ismail-Zhang q-analogue of the exponential function satisfies certain orthogonality relations analogous to the Fourier…
The spectral decomposition for an explicit second-order differential operator $T$ is determined. The spectrum consists of a continuous part with multiplicity two, a continuous part with multiplicity one, and a finite discrete part with multiplicity one. The spectral analysis gives rise to a generalized Fourier transform with an explicit hypergeometric function as a kernel. Using Jacobi polynomials the operator $T$ can also be realized as a five-diagonal operator, hence leading to orthogonality relations for $2\times 2$-matrix-valued polynomials. These matrix-valued polynomials can be considere…
We write spectral decomposition of the hypergeometric differential operator on the contour $Re z=1/2$ (multiplicity of spectrum is 2). As a result, we obtain an integral transform that differs from the Jacobi (or Olevsky) transform. We also try to do a step towards vector-valued special functions and construct a 3F2 orthogonal basis in the space of functions having values in 2-dimensional space. This basis is lying in an analytic continuation of continuous dual Hahn polynomials with respect to number $n$ of a polynomial. In Addendum, we discuss a vector-value analog of the Meixner--Pollachek o…
Limiting cases are studied of the Koornwinder-Macdonald multivariable generalization of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. We recover recently and not so recently introduced families of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials in several variables consisting of multivariable Wilson, continuous Hahn and Jacobi type polynomials, respectively. For each class of polynomials we provide systems of difference (or differential) equations, recurrence relations, and expressions for the norms of the polynomials in terms of the norm of the constant polynomial.
We use a method based on the division algorithm to determine all the values of the real parameters $b$ and $c$ for which the hypergeometric polynomials $_2F_1(-n, b; c; z)$ have $n$ real, simple zeros. Furthermore, we use the quasi-orthogonality of Jacobi polynomials to determine the intervals on the real line where the zeros are located.
In the lecture notes we start off with an introduction to the $q$-hypergeometric series, or basic hypergeometric series, and we derive some elementary summation and transformation results. Then the $q$-hypergeometric difference equation is studied, and in particular we study solutions given in terms of power series at $0$ and at $\infty$. Factorisations of the corresponding operator are considered in terms of a lowering operator, which is the $q$-derivative, and the related raising operator. Next we consider the $q$-hypergeometric operator in a special case, and we show that there is a natural…
Morales-Mendoza et al. present in 2013 a new class of discrete orthogonal polynomials. They use these polynomials to design an unbiased FIR filter. In their paper they make the statement that a representation of the polynomials via hypergeometric functions is unknown. However Shakibaei Asli et al. found in 2017 a $_3F_2$ hypergeometric function representation. In this paper it is shown that the "new" orthogonal polynomials belong to the class of the Hahn polynomials. The transfer function of the unbiased FIR filter has been determined. In the second part, an orthogonal unbiased FIR filter is d…
In this article we present a method to implement orthogonal polynomials and many other special functions in Computer Algebra systems enabling the user to work with those functions appropriately, and in particular to verify different types of identities for those functions. Some of these identities like differential equations, power series representations, and hypergeometric representations can even dealt with algorithmically, i.\ e.\ they can be computed by the Computer Algebra system, rather than only verified. The types of functions that can be treated by the given technique cover the genera…
The Askey-Wilson polynomials are orthogonal polynomials in $x = \cos θ$, which are given as a terminating $_4ϕ_3$ basic hypergeometric series. The non-symmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials are Laurent polynomials in $z=e^{iθ}$, which are given as a sum of two terminating $_4ϕ_3$'s. They satisfy a biorthogonality relation. In this paper new orthogonality relations for single $_4ϕ_3$'s which are Laurent polynomials in $z$ are given, which imply the non-symmetric Askey-Wilson biorthogonality. These results include discrete orthogonality relations. They can be considered as a classical analytic study…
The main objects of the investigation presented in this paper are branched-continued-fraction representations of ratios of contiguous hypergeometric series and type II multiple orthogonal polynomials on the step-line with respect to linear functionals or measures whose moments are ratios of products of Pochhammer symbols. This is an interesting case study of the recently found connection between multiple orthogonal polynomials and branched continued fractions that gives a clear example of how this connection leads to considerable advances on both topics. We obtain new results about generating …
Orthogonal polynomial solutions of an admissible potentially self-adjoint linear second-order partial $q$-difference equation of the hypergeometric type in two variables on $q$-linear lattices are analyzed. A $q$-Pearson's system for the orthogonality weight function, as well as for the difference derivatives of the solutions are presented, giving rise to a solution of the $q$-difference equation under study in terms of a Rodrigues-type formula. The monic orthogonal polynomial solutions are treated in detail, giving explicit formulae for the matrices in the corresponding recurrence relations t…
Two families (type $A$ and type $B$) of confluent hypergeometric polynomials in several variables are studied. We describe the orthogonality properties, differential equations, and Pieri type recurrence formulas for these families. In the one-variable case, the polynomials in question reduce to the Hermite polynomials (type $A$) and the Laguerre polynomials (type $B$), respectively. The multivariable confluent hypergeometric families considered here may be used to diagonalize the rational quantum Calogero models with harmonic confinement (for the classical root systems) and are closely connect…
We establish a new connection between moments of $n \times n$ random matrices $X_n$ and hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. Specifically, we consider moments $\mathbb{E}\mathrm{Tr} X_n^{-s}$ as a function of the complex variable $s \in \mathbb{C}$, whose analytic structure we describe completely. We discover several remarkable features, including a reflection symmetry (or functional equation), zeros on a critical line in the complex plane, and orthogonality relations. An application of the theory resolves part of an integrality conjecture of Cunden et al. [F. D. Cunden, F. Mezzadri, N. J. S…
The Cholesky factorization of the moment matrix is applied to discrete orthogonal polynomials on the homogeneous lattice. In particular, semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials, which are built in terms of a discrete Pearson equation, are studied. The Laguerre-Freud structure semi-infinite matrix that models the shifts by $\pm 1$ in the independent variable of the set of orthogonal polynomials is introduced. In the semiclassical case it is proven that this Laguerre-Freud matrix is banded. From the well known fact that moments of the semiclassical weights are logarithmic derivatives of ge…
Six families of generalized hypergeometric series in a variable $x$ and an arbitrary number of parameters are considered. Each of them is indexed by an integer $n$. Linear recurrence relations in $n$ relate these functions and their product by the variable $x$. We give explicit factorizations of these equations as products of first order recurrence operators. Related recurrences are also derived for the derivative with respect to $x$. These formulas generalize well-known properties of the classical orthogonal polynomials.
In 1971 Griffiths used a generating function to define polynomials in d variables orthogonal with respect to the multinomial distribution. The polynomials possess a duality between the discrete variables and the degree indices. In 2004 Mizukawa and Tanaka related these polynomials to character algebras and the Gelfand hypergeometric series. Using this approach they clarified the duality and obtained a new proof of the orthogonality. In the present paper, we interpret these polynomials within the context of the Lie algebra sl_{d+1}. Our approach yields yet another proof of the orthogonality. It…
The purpose of this article is to bring structure to (basic) hypergeometric biorthogonal systems, in particular to the q-Askey scheme of basic hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. We aim to achieve this by looking at the limits as p->0 of the elliptic hypergeometric biorthogonal functions from Spiridonov, with parameters which depend in varying ways on p. As a result we get 38 systems of biorthogonal functions with for each system at least one explicit measure for the bilinear form. Amongst these we indeed recover the q-Askey scheme. Each system consists of (basic hypergeometric) rational fu…
