We propose a two-spin quantum-mechanical model with applied magnetic fields acting on the Poincaré-Bloch sphere, to reveal a new class of topological energy bands with Chern number one half for each spin-1/2. The mechanism behind this fractional topology is a two-spin product state at the north pole and a maximally entangled state close to the south pole. The fractional Chern number of each spin can be measured through the magnetizations at the poles. We study a precise protocol where the spin dynamics in time reflects the Landau-Zener physics associated with energy band crossing effects. We show a correspondence between the two-spin system and topological bilayer models on a honeycomb lattice. These models describe semimetals with a nodal ring surrounding the region of entanglement.
We show that, quite generically, a [111] slab of spin-orbit coupled pyrochlore lattice exhibits surface states whose constant energy curves take the shape of Fermi arcs, localized to different surfaces depending on their quasimomentum. Remarkably, these persist independently of the existence of Weyl points in the bulk. Considering interacting electrons in slabs of finite thickness, we find a plethora of known fractional Chern insulating phases, to which we add the discovery of a new higher Chern number state which is likely a generalization of the Moore-Read fermionic fractional quantum Hall s…
We give a simple toy model to study a famous Jahn-Teller type molecule. Finite lifetime due to non-adiabatic coupling and finite temperature effect results in the effective Hamiltonian to be non-Hermitian. This effect pulls a conical intersection into a pair of connected Weyl points, bridged by a Fermi arc. The length of the Fermi arc depends on the strength of non-hermicity. This is a unique feature of non-Hermitian topology with no Hermitian analogue. We predict the existence of Weyl points in molecules which cause anomalous Jahn-Teller effects and fractional quantum number.
We study the entanglement spectrum (ES) of two-dimensional $C_{n}$-symmetric second-order topological insulators (TIs). We show that some characteristic higher order topological observables, e.g., the filling anomaly and its associated fractional corner charge, can be determined from the ES of atomic and fragile TIs. By constructing the relationship between the configuration of Wannier orbitals and the number of protected in-gap states in the ES for different symmetric cuts in real space, we express the fractional corner charge in terms of the number of protected in-gap states of the ES. We sh…
Lattice generalizations of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems, called fractional Chern insulators (FCIs), have been extensively investigated in strongly correlated systems. Despite many efforts, previous studies have not revealed all of the guiding principles for the FCI search. In this paper, we investigate a relationship between the topological band structure in the two-particle problem and the FCI ground states in the many-body problem. We first formulate the two-particle problem of a bosonic on-site interaction projected onto the lowest band of a given tight-binding Hamiltonian. We intr…
Spectral measurements of boundary localized in-gap modes are commonly used to identify topological insulators via the bulk-boundary correspondence. This can be extended to high-order topological insulators for which the most striking feature is in-gap modes at boundaries of higher co-dimension, e.g. the corners of a 2D material. Unfortunately, this spectroscopic approach is not always viable since the energies of the topological modes are not protected and they can often overlap the bulk bands, leading to potential misidentification. Since the topology of a material is a collective product of …
Topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) can exhibit unique, quantized electric phenomena such as fractional electric polarization and boundary-localized fractional charge. This quantized fractional charge is the generic observable for identification of TCIs that lack robust spectral features, including ones having higher-order topology. It has been predicted that fractional charges can also manifest where crystallographic defects disrupt the lattice structure of TCIs, potentially providing a bulk probe of crystalline topology. However, this capability has not yet been confirmed in experiment…
We study the ground state and low-energy subgap excitations of a finite wire of a time-reversal-invariant topological superconductor (TRITOPS) with spin-orbit coupling. We solve the problem analytically for a long chain of a specific one-dimensional lattice model in the electron-hole symmetric configuration and numerically for other cases of the same model. We present results for the spin density of excitations in long chains with an odd number of particles. The total spin projection along the axis of the spin-orbit coupling $S_z= \pm 1/2$ is distributed with fractions $\pm 1/4$ localized at b…
We study the quench dynamics of a topologically trivial one-dimensional gapless wire following its sudden coupling to topological bound states. We find that as the bound states leak into and propagate through the wire, signatures of their topological nature survive and remain measurable over a long lifetime. Thus, the quench dynamically induces topological properties in the gapless wire. Specifically, we study a gapless wire coupled to fractionally charged solitons or Majorana fermions and characterize the dynamically induced topology in the wire, in the presence of disorder and short-range in…
Fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) are lattice generalizations of the conventional fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in two-dimensional (2D) electron gases. They typically arise in a 2D lattice without time-reversal symmetry when a nearly flat Bloch band with nonzero Chern number is partially occupied by strongly interacting particles. Band topology and interactions endow FCIs exotic topological orders which are characterized by the precisely quantized Hall conductance, robust ground-state degeneracy on high-genus manifolds, and fractionalized quasiparticles. Since in principle FCIs can ex…
Generally, the topological corner state in two-dimensional second-order topological insulator (2D SOTI) is equivalent to the well-known domain wall state, originated from the mass-inversion between two adjacent edges with phase shift of pi. In this work, go beyond this conventional physical picture, we report a fractional mass-kink induced 2D SOTI in monolayer FeSe with canted checkerboard antiferromagnetic (AFM) order by analytic model and first-principles calculations. The canted spin associated in-plane Zeeman field can gap out the quantum spin Hall edge state of FeSe, forming a fractional …
We present universal characteristics of quantum entanglement and topology through virtual entanglement modes that fluctuate into existence in subsystem measurements. For generic interacting systems and extensive conserved quantities, these modes give rise to a statistical uncertainty which corresponds to entanglement entropies. Consequently, the measurement-induced modes provide directly observable route to entanglement and its scaling laws. Moreover, in topological systems, the measurement-induced edge modes give rise to quantized and non-analytic uncertainties, providing easily accessible si…
The signatures of Majorana zero-energy mode leaking into a spin-charge entangled double quantum dot are investigated theoretically in the strong electron correlation regime. The considered setup consists of two capacitively coupled quantum dots attached to external contacts and side-attached to topological superconducting wire hosting Majorana quasiparticles. We show that the presence of Majorana mode gives rise to unique features in the local density of states in the $SU(4)$ Kondo regime. Moreover, it greatly modifies the gate voltage dependence of the linear conductance, leading to fractiona…
We propose the generation of entangled qubits by utilizing the properties of edge states appearing at one end of a periodically driven (Floquet) superconducting qubit chain. Such qubits are naturally protected by the system's topology and their manipulation is possible through adiabatic control of the system parameters. By utilizing a Y-junction geometry, we then develop a protocol to perform high-fidelity transfer of entangled qubits from one end to another end of a qubit chain. Our quantum state transfer protocol is found to be robust against disorder and imperfection in the system parameter…
We extend the notion of fragile topology to periodically-driven systems. We demonstrate driving-induced fragile topology in two different models, namely, the Floquet honeycomb model and the Floquet $π$-flux square-lattice model. In both cases, we discover a rich phase diagram that includes Floquet fragile topological phases protected by crystalline rotation or mirror symmetries, Floquet Chern insulators, and trivial atomic phases, with distinct boundary features. Remarkably, the transitions between different phases can be feasibly achieved by simply tuning the driving amplitudes, which is a un…
Transport through edge-channels is responsible for conduction in quantum Hall (QH) phases. Topology dictates quantization of both charge and thermal transport coefficients. These turn out to approach robust quantized values when incoherent equilibration processes become dominant. Here, we report on measurements of both electrical and thermal conductances of integer and fractional quantum Hall (FQH) phases, realized in hBN encapsulated graphite gated bilayer graphene devices. Remarkably, for the complex edge at filling factors $ν=5/3$ and $ν=8/3$, which correspond to the paradigmatic hole-conju…

Topology is a central notion in the classification of band insulators and characterization of entangled many-body quantum states. In some cases, it manifests as quantized observables such as quantum Hall conductance. However, being inherently a global property depending on the entirety of the system, its direct measurement has remained elusive to local experimental probes in many cases. Here, we demonstrate that various topological band indices can be directly probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. Specifically, we show that the crystalline symmetry eigenvalues at the high-symmetry mom…
We introduce an effective edge network theory to characterize the boundary topology of coupled edge states generated from various types of topological insulators. Two examples studied are a two-dimensional second-order topological insulator and three-dimensional topological fullerenes, which involve multi-leg junctions. As a consequence of bulk-edge correspondence, these edge networks can faithfully predict properties such as the energy and fractional charge related to the bound states (edge solitons) in the aforementioned systems, including several aspects that were previously complicated or …
We theoretically study the Hall response of a lattice system following a quench where the topology of a filled band is suddenly changed. In the limit where the physics is dominated by a single Dirac cone, we find that the change in the Hall conductivity is two-thirds of the quantum of conductivity. We explore this universal behavior in the Haldane model, and discuss cold-atom experiments for its observation. Beyond linear response, the Hall effect crosses over from fractional to integer values. We investigate finite-size effects, and the role of the harmonic confinement.
We show a generic formation of the primary magnetorotons in the collective modes of the observed "unconventional" fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) states of the composite fermions at the filling factors 4/11, 4/13, 5/13, 5/17, and 3/8 at very low wavevectors with {\em anomalously} low energies which do not have any analogue to the conventional fractional quantum Hall states. Rather slow decay of the oscillations of the pair-correlation functions in these states are responsible for the low-energy magnetorotons. This is a manifestation of the distinct topology predicted before for these FQH…
We establish the correspondence between the fractional charge bound to a vortex in a textured lattice and the relevant bulk band topology in two-dimensional (2D) topological crystalline insulators. As a representative example, we consider the Kekule textured graphene whose bulk band topology is characterized by a 2D $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological invariant $ν_{\rm 2D}$ protected by inversion symmetry. The fractional charge localized at a vortex in the Kekule texture is shown to be related to the change in the bulk topological invariant $ν_{\rm 2D}$ around the vortex, as in the case of the Su-Sch…
