The main goal of this paper is to discuss the recent advancements of operator means for accretive matrices in a more general setting. In particular, we present the general form governing the well established definition of geometric mean, then we define arbitrary operator means and functional calculus for accretive matrices.
Applications of this new discussion involve generalizations of known inequalities from the setting of positive matrices to that of accretive matrices. This includes the arithmetic-harmonic mean comparisons, monotony of operator means, Ando's inequality, Choi's inequality, Ando-Zhan subadditive inequality and much more.
In this paper, we discuss new inequalities for accretive matrices through non standard domains. In particular, we present several relations for $A^r$ and $A\sharp_rB$, when $A,B$ are accretive and $r\in (-1,0)\cup (1,2).$ This complements the well established discussion of such quantities for accretive matrices when $r\in [0,1],$ and provides accretive versions of known results for positive matrices.
The concept of Loewner (partial) order for general complex matrices is introduced. After giving the definition of arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic mean for accretive-dissipative matrices, we study their basic properties. An AM-GM-HM inequality is established for two accretive-dissipative matrices in the sense of this extended Loewner order. We also compare the harmonic mean and parallel sum of two accretive-dissipative matrices, revealing an interesting relation between them. A number of examples are included.
The numerical radius of a matrix is a scalar quantity that has many applications in the study of matrix analysis. Due to the difficulty in computing the numerical radius, inequalities bounding it have received a considerable attention in the literature. In this article, we present many new bounds for the numerical radius of accretive matrices. The importance of this study is the presence of a new approach that treats a specific class of matrices, namely the accretive ones. The new bounds provide a new set of inequalities, some of which can be considered as refinements of other existing ones, w…
Let $A={bmatrix} A_{11} &A_{12} A_{21} & A_{22} {bmatrix}$ be an $n\times n$ accretive-dissipative matrix, $k$ and l be the orders of $A_{11}$ and $A_{22}$, respectively, and let $m=\min\{k,l\}$. Then $$|\det A|\le a|\det A_{11}|\cdot|\det A_{22}|,$$ where $a=\{{array}{l l} 2^{3m/2}, & \text{if} m\le n/3; 2^{n/2}, & \text{if} n/3<m\le n/2. {array}.$ This improves a result of Ikramov.
To better understand the algebra $\mathcal{M}_n$ of all $n\times n$ complex matrices, we explore the class of accretive matrices. This class has received renowned attention in recent years due to its role in complementing those results known for positive definite matrices. More precisely, we have several results that allow a better understanding of accretive matrices. Among many results, we present order-preserving results, Choi-Davis-type inequalities, mean-convex inequalities, sub-multiplicative results for the real part, and new bounds of the absolute value of accretive matrices. These resu…
Let $A$ and $B$ be two accretive operators. We first introduce the weighted geometric mean of $A$ and $B$ together with some related properties. Afterwards, we define the relative entropy as well as the Tsallis entropy of $A$ and $B$. The present definitions and their related results extend those already introduced in the literature for positive invertible operators.
It is known that every complex square matrix with nonnegative determinant is the product of positive semi-definite matrices. There are characterizations of matrices that require two or five positive semi-definite matrices in the product. However, the characterizations of matrices that require three or four positive semi-definite matrices in the product are lacking. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of these two types of matrices. With these results, we give an algorithm to determine whether a square matrix can be expressed as the product of $k$ positive semi-definite matrices …
We show how positive unital linear maps can be used to obtain lower bounds for the maximum distance between the eigenvalues of two normal matrices. Some related bounds for the spread and condition number of Hermitian matrices are also discussed here.
We consider generalized Hausdorff operators with positive definite and permutable perturbation matrices on Lebesgue spaces and prove that such operators are not Riesz operators provided they are non-zero.
We prove majorization inequalities for different means of positive definite matrices. These include the Cartan mean (the Karcher mean), the log Euclidean mean, the Wasserstein mean and the power mean.
We obtain several norm and eigenvalue inequalities for positive matrices partitioned into four blocks. The results involve the numerical range of the off-diagonal block X, especially the distance from 0 to W(X).
We prove tight bounds for the $\infty$-norm of the inverse of symmetric, diagonally dominant positive matrices. We also prove a new lower-bound form of Hadamard's inequality for the determinant of diagonally dominant positive matrices and an improved upper bound for diagonally balanced positive matrices. Applications of our results include numerical stability for linear systems, bounds on inverses of differentiable functions, and consistency of the maximum likelihood equations for maximum entropy graph distributions.
In this note we prove that Tr (MN+ PQ)>= 0 when the following two conditions are met: (i) the matrices M, N, P, Q are structured as follows: M = A -B, N = inv(B)-inv(A), P = C-D, Q =inv (B+D)-inv(A+C), where inv(X) denotes the inverse matrix of X (ii) A, B are positive definite matrices and C, D are positive semidefinite matrices.
We define a new average - termed the resolvent average - for positive semidefinite matrices. For positive definite matrices, the resolvent average enjoys self-duality and it interpolates between the harmonic and the arithmetic averages, which it approaches when taking appropriate limits. We compare the resolvent average to the geometric mean. Some applications to matrix functions are also given.
Positive semidefinite matrices partitioned into a small number of Hermitian blocks have a remarkable property. Such a matrix may be written in a simple way from the sum of its diagonal blocks
In this paper the geometric mean of partial positive definite matrices with missing entries is considered. The weighted geometric mean of two sets of positive matrices is defined, and we show whether such a geometric mean holds certain properties which the weighted geometric mean of two positive definite matrices satisfies. Additionally, counterexamples demonstrate that certain properties do not hold. A Loewner order on partial Hermitian matrices is also defined. The known results for the maximum determinant positive completion are developed with an integral representation, and the results are…
Positive bi-linear maps between matrix algebras play important roles to detect tri-partite entanglement by the duality between bi-linear maps and tri-tensor products. We exhibit indecomposable positive bi-linear maps between $2\times 2$ matrices which generate extreme rays in the cone of all positive bi-linear maps. In fact, they are exposed, and so detect entanglement of positive partial transpose whose volume is nonzero.
Given two positive definite matrices $A$ and $B$, a well known result by Gelfand, Naimark and Lidskii establishes a relationship between the eigenvalues of $A$ and $B$ and those of $AB$ by means of majorization inequalities. In this work we make a local study focused in the spectrum of the matrices that achieve the equality in those inequalities. As an application, we complete some previous results concerning Procustes problems for unitarily invariant norms in the manifold of positive definite matrices.
We prove some eigenvalue inequalities for positive semidefinite matrices partitioned into four blocks. The inradius of the numerical range of the off-diagonal block contributes to these estimates. Some related norm inequalities are given and a conjecture is proposed.
We bring in some new notions associated with $2\times 2$ block positive semidefinite matrices. These notions concern the inequalities between the singular values of the off diagonal blocks and the eigenvalues of the arithmetic mean or geometric mean of the diagonal blocks. We investigate some relations between them. Many examples are included to illustrate these relations.
Let H be a positive semidefinite matrix partitioned into Hermitian blocks. Then, up to a direct sum operation, H is the average of matrices isometrically congruent to its partial trace. A few corollaries are given, related to important inequalities in quantum information theory such as the Nielsen-Kempe separability criterion.
The objective of this manuscript is to understand the structure of an invertible linear map on the space of real symmetric matrices $\mathcal{S}^n$ that leaves invariant the closed convex cones of copositive and completely positive matrices ($COP_n$ and $CP_n$). A description of an invertible linear map on $\mathcal{S}^2$ such that $L(CP_2) \subset CP_2$ is completely determined.
For $k=1,\ldots,K$, let $A_k$ and $B_k$ be positive semidefinite matrices such that, for each $k$, $A_k$ commutes with $B_k$. We show that, for any unitarily invariant norm, \[ |||\sum_{k=1}^K A_kB_k||| \le ||| (\sum_{k=1}^K A_k)\;(\sum_{k=1}^K B_k)|||. \]
We study the class of Hankel matrices for which the $k\times k$-block-matrices are positive semi-definite. We prove that a $k\times k$-block-matrix has non zero determinant if and only if all $k\times k$-block matrices have non zero determinant. We use this result to extend the notion of propagation phenomena to $k$-hyponormal weighted shifts. Finally we give a study on invariance of $k$-hyponormal weighted shifts under one rank perturbation.
For a positive linear map F and a normal matrix N, we show that |F(N)| is bounded by some simple linear combinations in the unitary orbit of F(|N|). Several elegant sharp inequalities are derived, especially for the Schur product.
If $f$ is a symmetric complex-valued function on the $m$-fold Cartesian product of the set of non-negative reals and $A$ is a positive semi-definite $m\times m$ matrix with eigenvalues $λ_j$, we set $f(A):=f(λ_1,\dotsc,λ_m)$. It is shown that if $[f(A_{αβ})]$ is positive semi-definite whenever $[A_{αβ}]$ is a positive semi-definite matrix with positive semi-definite entries $A_{αβ}$, then $f$ has a power series expansion with positive coefficients.
We introduce a class of flows on the Wasserstein space of probability measures with finite first moment on the Cartan-Hadamard Riemannian manifold of positive definite matrices, and consider the problem of differentiability of the corresponding Cartan barycentric trajectory. As a consequence we have a version of Lie-Trotter formula and a related unitarily invariant norm inequality. Furthermore, a fixed point theorem related to the Karcher equation and the Cartan barycentric trajectory is also presented as an application.
Let $H$ be a positive semi-definite matrix partitioned in $β\times β$ Hermitian blocks, $H=[A_{s,t}]$, $1\le s,t,\le β$. Then, for all symmetric norms, {equation*} \| H \| \le \| \sum_{s=1}^β A_{s,s} \|. {equation*} The proof uses a nice decomposition for positive matrices and unitary congruences with the generators of a Clifford algebra. A few corollaries are given, in particular the partial trace operation increases norms of separable states on a real Hilbert space, leading to a conjecture for usual complex Hilbert spaces.
The metric $d(A,B)=\left[ \tr\, A+\tr\, B-2\tr(A^{1/2}BA^{1/2})^{1/2}\right]^{1/2}$ on the manifold of $n\times n$ positive definite matrices arises in various optimisation problems, in quantum information and in the theory of optimal transport. It is also related to Riemannian geometry. In the first part of this paper we study this metric from the perspective of matrix analysis, simplifying and unifying various proofs. Then we develop a theory of a mean of two, and a barycentre of several, positive definite matrices with respect to this metric. We explain some recent work on a fixed point ite…
This short note, in part of expository nature, points out several new or recent consequences of a quite nice decomposition for positive semi-definite matrices.
For a singular probability measure $μ$ on the circle, we show the existence of positive matrices on the unit disc which admit a boundary representation on the unit circle with respect to $μ$. These positive matrices are constructed in several different ways using the Kaczmarz algorithm. Some of these positive matrices correspond to the projection of the Szegő kernel on the disc to certain subspaces of the Hardy space corresponding to the normalized Cauchy transform of $μ$. Other positive matrices are obtained which correspond to subspaces of the Hardy space after a renormalization, and so are …
Recently a spectral Favard theorem for bounded banded lower Hessenberg matrices that admit a positive bidiagonal factorization was presented. In this paper conditions, in terms of continued fractions, for an oscillatory tetradiagonal Hessenberg matrix to have such positive bidiagonal factorization are found. Oscillatory tetradiagonal Toeplitz matrices are taken as a case study of matrix that admits a positive bidiagonal factorization. Moreover, it is proved that oscillatory banded Hessenberg matrices are organized in rays, with the origin of the ray not having the positive bidiagonal factoriza…
Gerstenhaber's theorem states that the dimension of the unital algebra generated by two commuting $n\times n$ matrices is at most $n$. We study the analog of this question for positive matrices with a positive commutator. We show that the dimension of the unital algebra generated by the matrices is at most $\frac{n(n+1)}{2}$ and that this bound can be attained. We also consider the corresponding question if one of the matrices is a permutation or a companion matrix or both of them are idempotents. In these cases, the upper bound for the dimension can be reduced significantly. In particular, th…
For positive semi-definite block-matrix $M,$ we say that $M$ is P.S.D. and we write $M=\begin{pmatrix} A \& X\\ {X^*} \& B\end{pmatrix} \in {\mathbb{M}}\_{n+m}^+$, with $A\in {\mathbb{M}}\_n^+$, $B \in {\mathbb{M}}\_m^+.$ The focus is on studying the consequences of a decomposition lemma due to C.~Bourrin and the main result is extending the class of P.S.D. matrices $M$ written by blocks of same size that satisfies the inequality: $\|M\|\le \|A+B\|$ for all symmetric norms.
We prove that all injective maps on positive complex matrices which preserve order and shrink spectrum are implemented by unitary or antiunitary conjugations. We show by counterexamples that all assumptions are indispensable. The result easily generalizes to maps on hermitian matrices.
Positivity properties of the Hadamard powers of the matrix $\begin{bmatrix}1+x_ix_j\end{bmatrix}$ for distinct positive real numbers $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ and the matrix $\begin{bmatrix}|\cos((i-j)π/n)|\end{bmatrix}$ are studied. In particular, it is shown that $\begin{bmatrix}(1+x_ix_j)^r\end{bmatrix}$ is not positive semidefinite for any positive real number $r<n-2$ that is not an integer, and $\begin{bmatrix}|\cos((i-j)π/n)|^r\end{bmatrix}$ is positive semidefinite for every odd integer $n\ge 3$ and $n-3\le r<n-2.$
We study basic spectral properties of J-self-adjoint $2\times 2$ block operator matrices. Using the linear resolvent growth condition, we obtain simple necessary conditions for the regularity of the critical point $\infty$. In particular, we present simple examples of operators having the singular critical point $\infty$. Also, we apply our results to the linearized operator arising in the study of soliton type solutions to the nonlinear relativistic Ginzburg-Landau equation.
Some real functions f induce mean of positive numbers and the matrix monotonicity gives a possibility for means of positive definite matrices. Moreover, such a function f can define linear mapping beta on matrices (which is basic in the constructions of monotone metrics). The present subject is to check the complete positivity of beta in the case of a few concrete functions f. This problem has been motivated by applications in quantum information.
Spectral and factorization properties of oscillatory matrices leads to a spectral Favard theorem for bounded banded matrices, that admit a positive bidiagonal factorization, in terms of sequences of mixed multiple orthogonal polynomials with respect to a set positive Lebesgue-Stieltjes measures. A mixed multiple Gauss quadrature formula with corresponding degrees of precision is given.
In this paper we determine those bijective maps of the set of all positive definite $n\times n$ complex matrices which preserve a given Bregman divergence corresponding to a differentiable convex function that satisfies certain conditions. We cover the cases of the most important Bregman divergences and present the precise structure of the mentioned transformations. Similar results concerning Jensen divergences and their preservers are also given.
