We give a short proof of a recent result by Bernik, Mastnak, and Radjavi, stating that an irreducible group of complex matrices with nonnegative diagonal entries is diagonally similar to a group of nonnegative monomial matrices. We also explore the problem when an irreducible matrix semigroup in which each member is diagonally similar to a nonnegative matrix is diagonally similar to a semigroup of nonnegative matrices.
Some new characterizations of nonnegative Hamiltonian operator matrices are given. Several necessary and sufficient conditions for an unbounded nonnegative Hamiltonian operators to be invertible are obtained; so that the main results in the previously published papers are corollaries of the new theorems. Most of all we want to stress the method of proof. It is based on the connections between Pauli operator matrices and nonnegative Hamiltonian matrices.
We consider nonnegative r-potent matrices with finite dimensions and study their decomposability. We derive the precise conditions under which an r-potent matrix is decomposable. We further determine a general structure for the r-potent matrices based on their decomposability. Finally, we establish that semigroups of r-potent matrices are also decomposable.
This paper explicitly details the relation between $M$-matrices, nonnegative roots of nonnegative matrices, and the embedding problem for finite-state stationary Markov chains. The set of nonsingular nonnegative matrices with arbitrary nonnegative roots is shown to be the closure of the set of matrices with matrix roots in $\mathcal{IM}$. The methods presented here employ nothing beyond basic matrix analysis, however it answers a question regarding $M$-matrices posed over 30 years ago and as an application, a new characterization of the set of all embeddable stochastic matrices is obtained as …
We prove new explicit asymptotic formulae between (geometric) eigenvalues in max-algebra and classical distinguished eigenvalues of nonnegative matrices, which are useful tools for transferring results between both settings. We establish new inequalities for both types of eigenvalues of Hadamard products and Hadamard weighted geometric means of nonnegative matrices. Moreover, a version of the spectral mapping theorem for the distinguished spectrum is pointed out.
Euclidean distance matrices (EDM) are symmetric nonnegative matrices with several interesting properties. In this article, we introduce a wider class of matrices called generalized Euclidean distance matrices (GDMs) that include EDMs. Each GDM is an entry-wise nonnegative matrix. A GDM is not symmetric unless it is an EDM. By some new techniques, we show that many significant results on Euclidean distance matrices can be extended to generalized Euclidean distance matrices. These contain results about eigenvalues, inverse, determinant, spectral radius, Moore-Penrose inverse and some majorizatio…
A sofic measure is the image of a Markov probability measure by a continuous morphism, and can be represented by means of products of matrices $A_n$ that belong to a finite set of nonnegative matrices. To prove that the multifractal formalism holds for such a measure, it is necessary to know whenever the sequence $n\mapsto\frac{A_1\cdots A_nv}{\Vert A_1\cdots A_nv\Vert}$ converges when $v$ is a positive vector. We give a sufficient condition for this convergence, that we use for the study of one Bernoulli convolution.

We give an effective bound of the joint spectral radius $ρ(Σ)$ for a finite set $Σ$ of nonnegative matrices: For every $n$, \[ \sqrt[n]{\left(\frac{V}{UD}\right)^{D} \max_C \max_{i,j\in C} \max_{A_1,\dots,A_n\inΣ}(A_1\dots A_n)_{i,j}} \le ρ(Σ) \le \sqrt[n]{D \max_C \max_{i,j\in C} \max_{A_1,\dots,A_n\inΣ}(A_1\dots A_n)_{i,j}}, \] where $D\times D$ is the dimension of the matrices, $U,V$ are respectively the largest entry and the smallest entry over all the positive entries of the matrices in $Σ$, and $C$ is taken over all strongly connected components in the dependency graph. The dependency gr…
Let $A = [a_{i j}]_{i,j=1}^n$ be a nonnegative matrix with $a_{1 1} = 0$. We prove some lower bounds for the spread $s(A)$ of $A$ that is defined as the maximum distance between any two eigenvalues of $A$. If $A$ has only two distinct eigenvalues, then $s(A) \ge \frac{n}{2(n-1)} \, r(A)$, where $r(A)$ is the spectral radius of $A$. Moreover, this lower bound is the best possible.
We introduce the concept of shape partition of a tensor and formulate a general tensor eigenvalue problem that includes all previously studied eigenvalue problems as special cases. We formulate irreducibility and symmetry properties of a nonnegative tensor $T$ in terms of the associated shape partition. We recast the eigenvalue problem for $T$ as a fixed point problem on a suitable product of projective spaces. This allows us to use the theory of multi-homogeneous order-preserving maps to derive a new and unifying Perron-Frobenius theorem for nonnegative tensors which either implies earlier re…
