Some real functions f induce mean of positive numbers and the matrix monotonicity gives a possibility for means of positive definite matrices. Moreover, such a function f can define linear mapping beta on matrices (which is basic in the constructions of monotone metrics). The present subject is to check the complete positivity of beta in the case of a few concrete functions f. This problem has been motivated by applications in quantum information.
The objective of this manuscript is to understand the structure of an invertible linear map on the space of real symmetric matrices $\mathcal{S}^n$ that leaves invariant the closed convex cones of copositive and completely positive matrices ($COP_n$ and $CP_n$). A description of an invertible linear map on $\mathcal{S}^2$ such that $L(CP_2) \subset CP_2$ is completely determined.
In \cite{CMW19}, the authors introduced $k$-entanglement breaking linear maps to understand the entanglement breaking property of completely positive maps on taking composition. In this article, we do a systematic study of $k$-entanglement breaking maps. We prove many equivalent conditions for a $k$-positive linear map to be $k$-entanglement breaking, thereby study the mapping cone structure of $k$-entanglement breaking maps. We discuss examples of $k$-entanglement breaking maps and some of their significance. As an application of our study, we characterize completely positive maps that reduce…
We establish connections between Schur parameters of the Schur class operator-valued functions, the corresponding simple conservative realizations, lower triangular Toeplitz matrices, and Kre\uın shorted operators. By means of Schur parameters or shorted operators for defect operators of Toeplitz matrices necessary and sufficient conditions for a simple conservative discrete-time system to be controllable/observable and for a completely non-unitary contraction to be completely non-isometric/completely non-co-isometric are obtained. For the Schur problem a characterization of central solution a…
We study the global inversion of a continuous nonsmooth mapping $f: \mathbb{R}^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^n$, which may be non-locally Lipschitz. To this end, we use the notion of pseudo-Jacobian map associated to f, introduced by Jeyakumar and Luc, and we consider a related index of regularity for f. We obtain a characterization of global inversion in terms of its index of regularity. Furthermore, we prove that the Hadamard integral condition has a natural counterpart in this setting, providing a sufficient condition for global invertibility.
We introduce a concept of bilinear ideal of jointly completely bounded mappings between operator spaces. In particular, we study the bilinear ideals $\mathcal{N}$ of completely nuclear, $\mathcal{I }$ of completely integral, $\mathcal{E}$ of completely extendible bilinear mappings, $\mathcal{MB}$ multiplicatively bounded and its symmetrization $\mathcal{SMB}$. We prove some basic properties of them, one of which is the fact that $\mathcal{I}$ is naturally identified with the ideal of (linear) completely integral mappings on the injective operator space tensor product.
We study the dual relationship between quantum group convolution maps $L^1(\mathbb{G})\rightarrow L^{\infty}(\mathbb{G})$ and completely bounded multipliers of $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}$. For a large class of locally compact quantum groups $\mathbb{G}$ we completely isomorphically identify the mapping ideal of row Hilbert space factorizable convolution maps with $M_{cb}(L^1(\widehat{\mathbb{G}}))$, yielding a quantum Gilbert representation for completely bounded multipliers. We also identify the mapping ideals of completely integral and completely nuclear convolution maps, the latter case coincidi…
Assume that $A_{1},...,A_{s}$ are complex $n\times n$ matrices. We give a computable criterion for existence of a common eigenvector of $A_{i}$ which generalize the result of D. Shemesh established for two matrices. We use this criterion to prove some necessary and sufficient condition for $A_{i}$ to have a common invariant subspace of dimension $d$, $2\leq d<n$, if every $A_{i}$ has pairwise different eigenvalues. Finally, we observe that the set of all matrices having multiple eigevalues has Lebesgue measure 0 and thus the condition is sufficient in practical applications. Being motivated by…
As part of the search for the value of the smallest upper bound of the best constant for the famous Grothendieck inequality, the so-called Grothendieck constant (a hard open problem - unsolved since 1953), we provide a further approach, primarily built on functions which map correlation matrices entrywise to correlation matrices by means of the Schur product, multivariate Gaussian analysis, copulas and inversion of suitable Taylor series. We summarise first results and point towards related open problems and topics for future research.
We completely characterize the higher rank numerical range of the matrices of the form $J_n(α)\oplusβI_m$, where $J_n(α)$ is the $n\times n$ Jordan block with eigenvalue $α$. Our characterization allows us to obtain concrete examples of several extreme properties of higher rank numerical ranges.
In this paper, we fully characterize the duality mapping over the space of matrices that are equipped with Schatten norms. Our approach is based on the analysis of the saturation of the Hölder inequality for Schatten norms. We prove in our main result that, for $p\in (1,\infty)$, the duality mapping over the space of real-valued matrices with Schatten-$p$ norm is a continuous and single-valued function and provide an explicit form for its computation. For the special case $p = 1$, the mapping is set-valued; by adding a rank constraint, we show that it can be reduced to a Borel-measurable singl…
Given commuting families of Hermitian matrices {A1, ..., Ak} and {B1, ...., Bk}, conditions for the existence of a completely positive map L, such that L(Aj) = Bj for j = 1, ...,k, are studied. Additional properties such as unital or / and trace preserving on the map ? are also considered. Connections of the study to dilation theory, matrix inequalities, unitary orbits, and quantum information science are mentioned.
We prove that generalized matrix functions satisfy a block-matrix strong superadditivity inequality over the cone of positive semidefinite matrices. Our result extends a recent result of Paksoy-Turkmen-Zhang (V. Paksoy, R. Turkmen, F. Zhang, Inequalities of generalized matrix functions via tensor products, Electron. J. Linear Algebra 27 (2014) 332-341.). As an application, we obtain a short proof of a classical inequality of Thompson (1961) on block matrix determinants.
A linear map $Φ:\mathbb{M}_n \to \mathbb{M}_k$ is called completely copositive if the resulting matrix $[Φ(A_{j,i})]_{i,j=1}^m$ is positive semidefinite for any integer $m$ and positive semidefinite matrix $[A_{i,j}]_{i,j=1}^m$. In this paper, we present some applications of the completely copositive maps $Φ(X)=(\mathrm{tr} X)I+X$ and $Ψ(X)= (\mathrm{tr} X)I-X$. Some new extensions about traces inequalities of positive semidefinite $3\times 3$ block matrices are included.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of completely positive matrix of linear maps on Hilbert $A$-modules over locally $C^{*}$-algebras and prove an analogue of Stinespring theorem for it. We show that any two minimal Stinespring representations for such matrices are unitarily equivalent. Finally, we prove an analogue of the Radon--Nikodym theorem for this type of completely positive $n\times n$ matrices.
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we define the new spaces and investigate some topological and structural properties. Also, we compute dual spaces of new spaces which are help us in the characterization of matrix mappings. Second, we give some examples related to new spaces.
We establish a fixed point theorem for mappings of square matrices of all sizes which respect the matrix sizes and direct sums of matrices. The conclusions are stronger if such a mapping also respects matrix similarities, i.e., is a noncommutative function. As a special case, we prove the corresponding contractive mapping theorem which can be viewed as a new version of the Banach Fixed Point Theorem. This result is then applied to prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution of the initial value problem for ODEs in noncommutative spaces. As a by-product of the ideas developed in this paper…
Let (M,N) be a pair of von Neumann algebras, or of dual operator spaces with at least one of them having property S_σ, and let T be an arbitrary completely bounded mapping on M. We present an explicit construction of an amplification of T to a completely bounded mapping on the w^*-spatial tensor product of M and N. Our approach makes essential use of the description of the predual of the latter given by Effros and Ruan in terms of the projective operator space tensor product and is further based on the concept of slice maps as introduced by Tomiyama. We discuss several properties of an amplifi…
A linear map between matrix spaces is positive if it maps positive semidefinite matrices to positive semidefinite ones, and is called completely positive if all its ampliations are positive. In this article quantitative bounds on the fraction of positive maps that are completely positive are proved. A main tool are real algebraic geometry techniques developed by Blekherman to study the gap between positive polynomials and sums of squares. Finally, an algorithm to produce positive maps which are not completely positive is given.
