Vehicle tracking has become one of the key applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in the fields of rescue, surveillance, traffic monitoring, etc. However, the increased tracking accuracy requires more energy consumption. In this letter, a decentralized vehicle tracking strategy is conceived for improving both tracking accuracy and energy saving, which is based on adjusting the intersection area between the fixed sensing area and the dynamic activation area. Then, two deep reinforcement learning (DRL) aided solutions are proposed relying on the dynamic selection of the activation area radius. Finally, simulation results show the superiority of our DRL aided design.

Underactuated vehicles have gained much attention in the recent years due to the increasing amount of aerial and underwater vehicles as well as nanosatellites. Trajectory tracking control of these vehicles is a substantial aspect for an increasing range of application domains. However, external disturbances and parts of the internal dynamics are often unknown or very time-consuming to model. To overcome this issue, we present a tracking control law for underactuated rigid-body dynamics using an online learning-based oracle for the prediction of the unknown dynamics. We show that Gaussian proce…

In this paper, we present a space-and-time-synchronized control method with application to the simultaneous tracking/formation. In the framework of polar coordinates, through correlating and decoupling the reference/actual kinematics between the self vehicle and target, time and space are separated, controlled independently. As such, the specified state can be achieved at the predetermined terminal time, meanwhile, the relative trajectory in space is independent of time. In addition, for the stabilization before the predesigned time, a cascaded prescribed-time control theorem is provided as th…
In this paper, we present a data-driven Model Predictive Controller that leverages a Gaussian Process to generate optimal motion policies for connected autonomous vehicles in regions with uncertainty in the wireless channel. The communication channel between the vehicles of a platoon can be easily influenced by numerous factors, e.g. the surrounding environment, and the relative states of the connected vehicles, etc. In addition, the trajectories of the vehicles depend significantly on the motion policies of the preceding vehicle shared via the wireless channel and any delay can impact the saf…

This paper proposes a new robust trajectory tracking error-based control approach for unmanned ground vehicles. A trajectory tracking error-based model is used to design a linear model predictive controller and its control action is combined with feedforward and robust control actions. The experimental results show that the proposed control structure is capable to let a tractor-trailer system track both linear and curvilinear target trajectories with low tracking error.

Wireless charging technology provides a solution to the insufficient battery life of electric vehicles (EVs). However, the conflict of interests between wireless charging lanes (WCLs) and EVs is difficult to resolve. In the day-ahead electricity market, considering the revenue of WCLs caused by the deviation between actual electricity sales and pre-purchased electricity, as well as endurance and traveling experience of EVs, this paper proposes a charging scheduling algorithm based on a double-layer game model. In lower layer, the potential game is used to model the multi-vehicle game of vehicl…
This paper presents a control method and trajectory planner for vehicles with first-order nonholonomic constraints that guarantee asymptotic convergence to a time-indexed trajectory. To overcome the nonholonomic constraint, a fixed point in front of the vehicle can be controlled to track a desired trajectory, albeit with a steady-state error. To eliminate steady state error, a sufficiently smooth trajectory is reformulated for the new reference point such that, when tracking the new trajectory, the vehicle asymptotically converges to the original trajectory. The resulting zero-error tracking l…

Model predictive control (MPC) is widely used for path tracking of autonomous vehicles due to its ability to handle various types of constraints. However, a considerable predictive error exists because of the error of mathematics model or the model linearization. In this paper, we propose a framework combining the MPC with a learning-based error estimator and a feedforward compensator to improve the path tracking accuracy. An extreme learning machine is implemented to estimate the model based predictive error from vehicle state feedback information. Offline training data is collected from a ve…

About 26% of total U.S. energy consumption is used in the transportation sector. Conventional vehicles use fuels such as gasoline, emit harmful gases, and have adverse effects on the environment. Electric vehicles (EVs) provide an alternative solution that decreases the dependency on traditional fuels such as gasoline and reduces hazardous gas emissions. EVs can drive longer distances by employing dynamic wireless power transfer systems (DWPT) without increasing their battery size or having stopovers. Additionally, developing a decision system that avoids an excessive load on the power grid is…
The unknown sharp changes of vehicle acceleration rates, also called the unknown jerk dynamics, may significantly affect the driving performance of the leader vehicle in a platoon, resulting in more drastic car-following movements in platooning tracking control, which could cause safety and traffic capacity concerns. To address these issues, in this paper, we investigate cooperative platooning tracking control and intermittent optimization problems for connected automated vehicles (CAVs) with a nonlinear car-following model. We assume that the external inputs of the leader CAV contain unknown …
This paper investigates the problem of bidirectional energy exchange between electric vehicles (EVs) and road lanes embedded with wireless power transfer technologies called wireless charging-discharging lanes (WCDLs). As such, EVs could provide better services to the grid, especially for balancing the supply-demand, while bringing convenience for EV users, because no cables and EV stops are needed. To enable this EV--WCDL energy exchange, a novel decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) trading mechanism is proposed, in which EVs directly negotiate with a WCDL to reach consensus on the energy price a…

The MT can be an emergency ambulance and need a secure wireless communication link for continuous monitoring…
Full drive-by-wire electric vehicles (FDWEV) with X-by-wire technology can achieve independent driving, braking, and steering of each wheel, providing a good application platform for autonomous driving technology. Path planning and tracking control, in particular, are critical components of autonomous driving. Then, a novel sliding mode control is proposed, which is capable of providing smooth and continuous torque commands free from chattering. In comparative studies, the proposed combined hybrid control strategy has ensured contro…
An intelligent control strategy is proposed to eliminate the actuator saturation problem that exists in the trajectory tracking process of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV). The control strategy consists of two parts: for the kinematic modeling part, a fuzzy logic-refined backstepping control is developed to achieve control velocities within acceptable ranges and errors of small fluctuations; on the basis of the velocities deducted by the improved kinematic control, the sliding mode control (SMC) is introduced in the dynamic modeling to obtain corresponding torques and forces that should be a…

This paper proposes a life-long adaptive path tracking policy learning method for autonomous vehicles that can self-evolve and self-adapt with multi-task knowledge. Firstly, the proposed method can learn a model-free control policy for path tracking directly from the historical driving experience, where the property of vehicle dynamics and corresponding control strategy can be learned simultaneously. Secondly, by utilizing the life-long learning method, the proposed method can learn the policy with task-incremental knowledge without encountering catastrophic forgetting. Thus, with continual mu…
With the ubiquity of touchscreens, touch input modality has become a popular way of interaction. However, current touchscreen technology is limiting in its design as it restricts touch interactions to specially instrumented touch surfaces. Surface contaminants like water can also hinder proper interactions. In this paper, we propose the use of magnetic field sensing to enable finger tracking on a surface with minimal instrumentation. Our system, MagSurface, turns everyday surfaces into a touch medium, thus allowing more flexibility in the types of touch surfaces. The evaluation of our system c…
This paper concentrates on the collaborative target tracking control of a pair of tracking vehicles with formation constraints. The proposed controller requires only distance measurements between tracking vehicles and the target. Its novelty lies in two aspects: 1) the elliptic coordinates are used to represent an arbitrary tracking formation without singularity, which can be deduced from inter-agent distances, and 2) the regulation of the tracking vehicle system obeys a binocular coordination principle, which simplifies the design of the control law by leveraging rich physical meanings of ell…
