This paper proposes a simple yet effective method for human action recognition in video. The proposed method separately extracts local appearance and motion features using state-of-the-art three-dimensional convolutional neural networks from sampled snippets of a video. These local features are then concatenated to form global representations which are then used to train a linear SVM to perform the action classification using full context of the video, as partial context as used in previous works. The videos undergo two simple proposed preprocessing techniques, optical flow scaling and crop filling. We perform an extensive evaluation on three common benchmark dataset to empirically show the benefit of the SVM, and the two preprocessing steps.
Two-stream networks have achieved great success in video recognition. A two-stream network combines a spatial stream of RGB frames and a temporal stream of Optical Flow to make predictions. However, the temporal redundancy of RGB frames as well as the high-cost of optical flow computation creates challenges for both the performance and efficiency. Recent works instead use modern compressed video modalities as an alternative to the RGB spatial stream and improve the inference speed by orders of magnitudes. Previous works create one stream for each modality which are combined with an additional …
3D convolutional networks is a good means to perform tasks such as video segmentation into coherent spatio-temporal chunks and classification of them with regard to a target taxonomy. In the chapter we are interested in the classification of continuous video takes with repeatable actions, such as strokes of table tennis. Filmed in a free marker less ecological environment, these videos represent a challenge from both segmentation and classification point of view. The 3D convnets are an efficient tool for solving these problems with window-based approaches.
Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have been very successful in skeleton-based human action recognition where the sequence of skeletons is modeled as a graph. However, most of the GCN-based methods in this area train a deep feed-forward network with a fixed topology that leads to high computational complexity and restricts their application in low computation scenarios. In this paper, we propose a method to automatically find a compact and problem-specific topology for spatio-temporal graph convolutional networks in a progressive manner. Experimental results on two widely used datasets for sk…

Action recognition is an important research topic in computer vision. It is the basic work for visual understanding and has been applied in many fields. Since human actions can vary in different environments, it is difficult to infer actions in completely different states with a same structural model. For this case, we propose a Cross-Enhancement Transform Two-Stream 3D ConvNets algorithm, which considers the action distribution characteristics on the specific dataset. As a teaching model, stream with better performance in both streams is expected to assist in training another stream. In this …

We study the video super-resolution (SR) problem for facilitating video analytics tasks, e.g. action recognition, instead of for visual quality. The popular action recognition methods based on convolutional networks, exemplified by two-stream networks, are not directly applicable on video of low spatial resolution. This can be remedied by performing video SR prior to recognition, which motivates us to improve the SR procedure for recognition accuracy. Tailored for two-stream action recognition networks, we propose two video SR methods for the spatial and temporal streams respectively. On the o…

State-of-the-art methods for video action recognition commonly use an ensemble of two networks: the spatial stream, which takes RGB frames as input, and the temporal stream, which takes optical flow as input. In recent work, both of these streams consist of 3D Convolutional Neural Networks, which apply spatiotemporal filters to the video clip before performing classification. Conceptually, the temporal filters should allow the spatial stream to learn motion representations, making the temporal stream redundant. However, we still see significant benefits in action recognition performance by inc…
This paper proposes a two-stream flow-guided convolutional attention networks for action recognition in videos. The central idea is that optical flows, when properly compensated for the camera motion, can be used to guide attention to the human foreground. We thus develop cross-link layers from the temporal network (trained on flows) to the spatial network (trained on RGB frames). These cross-link layers guide the spatial-stream to pay more attention to the human foreground areas and be less affected by background clutter. We obtain promising performances with our approach on the UCF101, HMDB5…

Pose based hand gesture recognition has been widely studied in the recent years. Compared with full body action recognition, hand gesture involves joints that are more spatially closely distributed with stronger collaboration. This nature requires a different approach from action recognition to capturing the complex spatial features. Many gesture categories, such as "Grab" and "Pinch", have very similar motion or temporal patterns posing a challenge on temporal processing. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a two-stream neural network with one stream being a self-attention based …

We present a self-supervised approach using spatio-temporal signals between video frames for action recognition. A two-stream architecture is leveraged to tangle spatial and temporal representation learning. Our task is formulated as both a sequence verification and spatio-temporal alignment tasks. The former task requires motion temporal structure understanding while the latter couples the learned motion with the spatial representation. The self-supervised pre-trained weights effectiveness is validated on the action recognition task. Quantitative evaluation shows the self-supervised approach …

Analyzing videos of human actions involves understanding the temporal relationships among video frames. State-of-the-art action recognition approaches rely on traditional optical flow estimation methods to pre-compute motion information for CNNs. Such a two-stage approach is computationally expensive, storage demanding, and not end-to-end trainable. In this paper, we present a novel CNN architecture that implicitly captures motion information between adjacent frames. We name our approach hidden two-stream CNNs because it only takes raw video frames as input and directly predicts action classes…

Each convolution block consist of three sequential convolution operations: a 2D spatial convolution followed by spatio-temporal convolutions in the hor…
It remains a challenge to efficiently extract spatialtemporal information from skeleton sequences for 3D human action recognition. Although most recent action recognition methods are based on Recurrent Neural Networks which present outstanding performance, one of the shortcomings of these methods is the tendency to overemphasize the temporal information. Since 3D convolutional neural network(3D CNN) is a powerful tool to simultaneously learn features from both spatial and temporal dimensions through capturing the correlations between three dimensional signals, this paper proposes a novel two-s…
This paper investigates body bones from skeleton data for skeleton based action recognition. Body joints, as the direct result of mature pose estimation technologies, are always the key concerns of traditional action recognition methods. However, instead of joints, we humans naturally identify how the human body moves according to shapes, lengths and places of bones, which are more obvious and stable for observation. Hence given graphs generated from skeleton data, we propose to develop convolutions over graph edges that correspond to bones in human skeleton. We describe an edge by integrating…

Learning the spatial-temporal representation of motion information is crucial to human action recognition. Nevertheless, most of the existing features or descriptors cannot capture motion information effectively, especially for long-term motion. To address this problem, this paper proposes a long-term motion descriptor called sequential Deep Trajectory Descriptor (sDTD). Specifically, we project dense trajectories into two-dimensional planes, and subsequently a CNN-RNN network is employed to learn an effective representation for long-term motion. For the two-stream style methods in action recognition, fusing the two streams' predictions is always by the weighted averaging scheme. This fusion method with fixed weights lacks of pertinence to different action videos and always needs trial and error on the validation set. In order to enhance the adaptability of two-stream ConvNets and improve its performance, an end-to-end trainable gated fusion method, namely gating ConvNet, for the two-stream ConvNets is proposed in this paper based on the MoE (Mixture of Experts) theory. Furthermore, we show that factorizing the 3D convolutional filters into separate spatial and temporal components yields significantly advantages in accuracy. Our empirical study lead…

Deep convolutional networks have achieved great success for object recognition in still images. However, for action recognition in videos, the improvement of deep convolutional networks is not so evident. We argue that there are two reasons that could probably explain this result. First the current network architectures (e.g. Two-stream ConvNets) are relatively shallow compared with those very deep models in image domain (e.g. VGGNet, GoogLeNet), and therefore their modeling capacity is constrained by their depth. Second, probably more importantly, the training dataset of action recognition is…

For this, we propose a novel Contrastive GCN-Transformer Network (ConGT) which fuses the spatial and temporal modules in a parallel way. In skeleton-based action recognition, graph convolutional networks (GCNs), which model the human body skeletons as spatiotemporal graphs, have achieved remarkable performance. However, in existing GCN-based methods, the topology of the graph is set manually, and it is fixed over all layers and input samples. This may not be optimal for the hierarchical GCN and diverse samples in action recognition tasks. In addition, the second-order information (the lengths and directions of bones) of the skeleton data, which is naturally more informative and discriminative for action recognition, is rarely i…

Pose-based action recognition is predominantly tackled by approaches which treat the input skeleton in a monolithic fashion, i.e. joints in the pose tree are processed as a whole. However, such approaches ignore the fact that action categories are often characterized by localized action dynamics involving only small subsets of part joint groups involving hands (e.g. `Thumbs up') or legs (e.g. `Kicking'). Although part-grouping based approaches exist, each part group is not considered within the global pose frame, causing such methods to fall short. Further, conventional approaches employ indep…
Recognising human activities from streaming videos poses unique challenges to learning algorithms: predictive models need to be scalable, incrementally trainable, and must remain bounded in size even when the data stream is arbitrarily long. Furthermore, as parameter tuning is problematic in a streaming setting, suitable approaches should be parameterless, and make no assumptions on what class labels may occur in the stream. We present here an approach to the recognition of human actions from streaming data which meets all these requirements by: (1) incrementally learning a model which adaptiv…
