Human actions comprise of joint motion of articulated body parts or `gestures'. Human skeleton is intuitively represented as a sparse graph with joints as nodes and natural connections between them as edges. Graph convolutional networks have been used to recognize actions from skeletal videos. We introduce a part-based graph convolutional network (PB-GCN) for this task, inspired by Deformable Part-based Models (DPMs). We divide the skeleton graph into four subgraphs with joints shared across them and learn a recognition model using a part-based graph convolutional network. We show that such a model improves performance of recognition, compared to a model using entire skeleton graph. Instead of using 3D joint coordinates as node features, we show that using relative coordinates and temporal displacements boosts performance. Our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on two challenging benchmark datasets NTURGB+D and HDM05, for skeletal action recognition.

This paper proposes a new graph convolutional operator called central difference graph convolution (CDGC) for skeleton based action recognition. It is not only able to aggregate node information like a vanilla graph convolutional operation but also gradient information. Without introducing any additional parameters, CDGC can replace vanilla graph convolution in any existing Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs). In addition, an accelerated version of the CDGC is developed which greatly improves the speed of training. Experiments on two popular large-scale datasets NTU RGB+D 60 & 120 have demonst…

Human action recognition is one of the challenging tasks in computer vision. The current action recognition methods use computationally expensive models for learning spatio-temporal dependencies of the action. Models utilizing RGB channels and optical flow separately, models using a two-stream fusion technique, and models consisting of both convolutional neural network (CNN) and long-short term memory (LSTM) network are few examples of such complex models. Moreover, fine-tuning such complex models is computationally expensive as well. This paper proposes a deep neural network architecture for …
This paper investigates body bones from skeleton data for skeleton based action recognition. Body joints, as the direct result of mature pose estimation technologies, are always the key concerns of traditional action recognition methods. However, instead of joints, we humans naturally identify how the human body moves according to shapes, lengths and places of bones, which are more obvious and stable for observation. Hence given graphs generated from skeleton data, we propose to develop convolutions over graph edges that correspond to bones in human skeleton. We describe an edge by integrating…
This paper attempts at improving the accuracy of Human Action Recognition (HAR) by fusion of depth and inertial sensor data. Firstly, we transform the depth data into Sequential Front view Images(SFI) and fine-tune the pre-trained AlexNet on these images. Then, inertial data is converted into Signal Images (SI) and another convolutional neural network (CNN) is trained on these images. Finally, learned features are extracted from both CNN, fused together to make a shared feature layer, and these features are fed to the classifier. We experiment with two classifiers, namely Support Vector Machin…
Learning graph convolutional networks (GCNs) is an emerging field which aims at generalizing convolutional operations to arbitrary non-regular domains. In particular, GCNs operating on spatial domains show superior performances compared to spectral ones, however their success is highly dependent on how the topology of input graphs is defined. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework for graph convolutional networks that learns the topological properties of graphs. The design principle of our method is based on the optimization of a constrained objective function which learns not only the …
Dynamics of human body skeletons convey significant information for human action recognition. Conventional approaches for modeling skeletons usually rely on hand-crafted parts or traversal rules, thus resulting in limited expressive power and difficulties of generalization. In this work, we propose a novel model of dynamic skeletons called Spatial-Temporal Graph Convolutional Networks (ST-GCN), which moves beyond the limitations of previous methods by automatically learning both the spatial and temporal patterns from data. This formulation not only leads to greater expressive power but also st…
This paper proposes a two-stream flow-guided convolutional attention networks for action recognition in videos. The central idea is that optical flows, when properly compensated for the camera motion, can be used to guide attention to the human foreground. We thus develop cross-link layers from the temporal network (trained on flows) to the spatial network (trained on RGB frames). These cross-link layers guide the spatial-stream to pay more attention to the human foreground areas and be less affected by background clutter. We obtain promising performances with our approach on the UCF101, HMDB5…
3D convolutional networks is a good means to perform tasks such as video segmentation into coherent spatio-temporal chunks and classification of them with regard to a target taxonomy. In the chapter we are interested in the classification of continuous video takes with repeatable actions, such as strokes of table tennis. Filmed in a free marker less ecological environment, these videos represent a challenge from both segmentation and classification point of view. The 3D convnets are an efficient tool for solving these problems with window-based approaches.

Skeleton-based action recognition receives increasing attention because the skeleton representations reduce the amount of training data by eliminating visual information irrelevant to actions. To further improve the sample efficiency, meta-learning-based one-shot learning solutions were developed for skeleton-based action recognition. However, such measurement holds unstable representativity due to inadequate generalized learning on local invariant and noisy features, while intu…

However, most of the GCN-based methods in this area train a deep feed-forward network with a fixed topology that leads to high computational complexity and restricts their application in low computation scenarios. In this paper, we propose a method to automatically find a compact and problem-specific topology for spatio-temporal graph convolutional networks in a progressive manner. In recent years, graph convolutional networks (GCNs) play an increasingly critical role in skeleton-based human action recognition. However, most GCN-based methods still have two main limitations: 1) They only consider the motion information of the joints or process the joints and bones separately, which are unable to fully explore the latent functional correlation between joints and bones for action recognition. 2) Most of these works are performed in the supervised learning way, which heavily relies on massive labeled training data. To address these issues, we propose a semi-supervised skele…

In this paper, we therefore propose a highly efficient graph convolutional network that addresses the limitations of previous works. This is achieved by a parallel …
Graph convolutional networks (GCNs), which generalize CNNs to more generic non-Euclidean structures, have achieved remarkable performance for skeleton-based action recognition. However, there still exist several issues in the previous GCN-based models. First, the topology of the graph is set heuristically and fixed over all the model layers and input data. This may not be suitable for the hierarchy of the GCN model and the diversity of the data in action recognition tasks. Second, the second-order information of the skeleton data, i.e., the length and orientation of the bones, is rarely invest…

However, in most existing Graph Convolutional Networks, the local attention mask is defined based on natural connections of human skeleton joints and ignores the dynamic relations for example between head, hands and feet joints. In addition, the attention mechanism has been proven effective in Natural Language Processing and image description, which is rarely investigated in existing methods. In thi…
