Many problems in science and engineering can be formulated in terms of geometric patterns in high-dimensional spaces. We present high-dimensional convolutional networks (ConvNets) for pattern recognition problems that arise in the context of geometric registration. We first study the effectiveness of convolutional networks in detecting linear subspaces in high-dimensional spaces with up to 32 dimensions: much higher dimensionality than prior applications of ConvNets. We then apply high-dimensional ConvNets to 3D registration under rigid motions and image correspondence estimation. Experiments indicate that our high-dimensional ConvNets outperform prior approaches that relied on deep networks based on global pooling operators.

Convolution Neural Networks (CNN) have recently achieved state-of-the art performance on handwritten Chinese character recognition (HCCR). However, most of CNN models employ the SoftMax activation function and minimize cross entropy loss, which may cause loss of inter-class information. To cope with this problem, we propose to combine cross entropy with similarity ranking function and use it as loss function. The experiments results show that the combination loss functions produce higher accuracy in HCCR. This report briefly reviews cross entropy loss function, a typical similarity ranking fun…
We study the adaptation of convolutional neural networks to the complex temporal radio signal domain. We compare the efficacy of radio modulation classification using naively learned features against using expert features which are widely used in the field today and we show significant performance improvements. We show that blind temporal learning on large and densely encoded time series using deep convolutional neural networks is viable and a strong candidate approach for this task especially at low signal to noise ratio.
The goal of the present study is to explore the application of deep convolutional network features to emotion recognition. Results indicate that they perform similarly to other published models at a best recognition rate of 94.4%, and do so with a single still image rather than a video stream. An implementation of an affective feedback game is also described, where a classifier using these features tracks the facial expressions of a player in real-time.
3D convolutional networks is a good means to perform tasks such as video segmentation into coherent spatio-temporal chunks and classification of them with regard to a target taxonomy. In the chapter we are interested in the classification of continuous video takes with repeatable actions, such as strokes of table tennis. Filmed in a free marker less ecological environment, these videos represent a challenge from both segmentation and classification point of view. The 3D convnets are an efficient tool for solving these problems with window-based approaches.
Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have been very successful in skeleton-based human action recognition where the sequence of skeletons is modeled as a graph. In this paper, we propose a method to automatically find a compact and problem-specific topology for spatio-temporal graph convolutional networks in a progressive manner.
