We establish spectral inclusion and mapping theorems for scalar type spectral operators, generalizing their counterparts for normal operators. Thereby, we extend a precise weak spectral mapping theorem, known to hold for $C_0$-semigroups of normal operators on complex Hilbert spaces, to the more general case of $C_0$-semigroups of scalar type spectral operators on complex Banach spaces. The finer spectrum structure is given itemized consideration.
In this paper we study fixed point properties for semitopological semigroup of nonexpansive mappings on a bounded closed convex subset of a Banach space. We also study a Schauder fixed point property for a semitopological semigroup of continuous mappings on a compact convex subset of a separated locally convex space. Such semigroups properly include the class of extremely left amenable semitopological semigroups, the free commutative semigroup on one generator and the bicyclic semigroup $S_1 = < a, b: ab = 1 >$.
In this paper, using Kronecker's theorem, we discuss the set of common fixed points of an n-parameter continuous semigroup of mappings. We also discuss convergence theorems to a common fixed point of an n-parameter nonexpansive semigroup.
In this paper, we prove the existence of a common fixed point in $C(K)$, the Chebyshev center of K, for a left reversible semigroup of isometry mappings. This existence result improves the results obtained by Lim et al. and Brodskii and Milman.
In this paper, we discuss characterizations of common fixed points of commutative semigroups of nonexpansive mappings. We next prove convergence theorems to a common fixed point. We finally discuss nonexpansive retractions onto the set of common fixed points. In our discussion, we may not assume the strict convexity of the Banach space.
In this note we study the differentiability with respect to the time-parameter of semigroups consisting of Lipschitzian or smooth self-mappings of a domain in a Banach space.
The purpose of this paper is to give an updated survey on various algebraic and analytic properties of semigroups related to fixed point properties of semigroup actions on a non-empty closed convex subset of a Banach space or, more generally, a locally convex topological vector space.
We show a few fixed point theorems for semigroups acting on weakly compact convex subsets of Banach spaces when $LUC(S), AP(S), WAP(S)$ or $WAP(S)\cap LUC(S)$ have a left invariant mean. In particular, we give a characterization of semitopological semigroups that have a left invariant mean on the space of weakly almost periodic functions in terms of a fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings. It answers, in the case of Banach spaces, Question 4 of [A.T.-M. Lau, Y. Zhang, J. Funct. Anal. 263 (2012), 2949--2977] in affirmative. We also extend the fixed point theorem of R. Hsu from left rev…
The main purpose of this paper is to prove the mean ergodic theorem for nonexpansive mappings and semigroups in locally compact Hadamard spaces, including finite dimensional Hadamard manifolds. The main tool for proving ergodic convergence is the almost periodicity of orbits of a nonexpansive mapping. Therefore, in the first part of the paper, we study almost periodicity (and as a special case, periodicity) in metric and Hadamard spaces. Then, we prove a mean ergodic theorem for nonexpansive mappings and continuous semigroups of contractions in locally compact Hadamard spaces. Finally, an appl…
Suppose that S is a left amenable semitopological semigroup. We prove that if ${T_{t}: t \in S}$ is a uniformly k-Lipschitzian semigroup on a bounded closed and convex subset C of a Hilbert space and $k<\sqrt{2}$, then the set of fixed points of this semigroup is a Hölder continuous retract of C. This gives a qualitative complement to the Ishihara-Takahashi fixed point existence theorem.
In this paper, we prove the following theorem: Let {T(t) : t >= 0} be a one-parameter continuous semigroup of mappings on a subset C of a Banach space E. The set of fixed points of T(t) is denoted by F(T(t)) for each t >= 0. Then cap_{t >= 0} F(T(t)) = F(T(1)) cap F(T(sqrt 2)) holds. Using this theorem, we discuss convergence theorems to a common fixed point of {T(t) : t >= 0}.
A well-known result of W. Ray asserts that if $C$ is an unbounded convex subset of a Hilbert space, then there is a nonexpansive mapping $T$: $C\to C$ that has no fixed point. In this paper we establish some common fixed point properties for a semitopological semigroup $S$ of nonexpansive mappings acting on a closed convex subset $C$ of a Hilbert space, assuming that there is a point $c\in C$ with a bounded orbit and assuming that certain subspace of $C_b(S)$ has a left invariant mean. Left invariant mean (or amenability) is an important notion in harmonic analysis of semigroups and groups int…
In this paper we obtain new inclusion and coincidence theorems for absolutely or multiple summing multilinear mappings. In particular, we derive optimal coincidence theorems of Bohnenblust-Hille type for multilinear forms on K-convex Banach spaces of cotype 2.
In this paper, we investigate a new notion of accretive mappings called generalized $αβ$-$H((.,.),(.,.))$-mixed accretive mappings in Banach spaces. We extend the concept of proximal-point mappings associated with generalized $m$-accretive mappings to the generalized $αβ$-$H((.,.),(.,.))$-mixed accretive mappings and prove that the proximal-point mapping associated with generalized $αβ$-$H((.,.),(.,.))$-mixed accretive mapping is single-valued and Lipschitz continuous. Some examples are given to justify the definition of generalized $αβ$-$H((.,.),(.,.))$-mixed accretive mappings. Further, by u…
A mapping $f:(G_1,[ ]_1)\to (G_2,[ ]_2)$ between ternary semigroups will be called a ternary homomorphism if $f([xyz]_1)=[f(x)f(y)f(z)]_2$. In this paper, we prove the generalized Hyers--Ulam--Rassias stability of mappings of commutative semigroups into Banach spaces. In addition, we establish the superstability of ternary homomorphisms into Banach algebras endowed with multiplicative norms.
We investigate uniform, strong, weak and almost weak stability of multiplication semigroups on Banach space valued $L^p$-spaces. We show that, under certain conditions, these properties can be characterized by analogous ones of the pointwise semigroups. Using techniques from selector theory, we prove a spectral mapping theorem for the point spectra of the pointwise and global semigroups and apply this as a major tool for determining almost weak stability.
This paper proves some results concerning the polar factorisation of an integrable vector-valued function u into the composition of the gradient of a convex function with a measure-preserving mapping. Not every integrable function has a polar factorisation; we extend the class of counterexamples. We introduce a generalisation: u has a polar inclusion if u(x) belongs to the subdifferential of the convex function at y for almost every pair (x,y) with respect to a measure-preserving plan. Given a regularity assumption, we show that such measure-preserving plans are exactly the minimisers of a Mon…
We present a spectral mapping theorem for semigroups on any Banach space $E$. From this, we obtain a characterization of exponential dichotomy for nonautonomous differential equations for $E$-valued functions. This characterization is given in terms of the spectrum of the generator of the semigroup of evolutionary operators.
We present a spectral mapping theorem for continuous semigroups of operators on any Banach space $E$. The condition for the hyperbolicity of a semigroup on $E$ is given in terms of the generator of an evolutionary semigroup acting in the space of $E$-valued functions. The evolutionary semigroup generated by the propagator of a nonautonomous differential equation in $E$ is also studied. A ``discrete'' technique for the investigating of the evolutionary semigroup is developed and applied to describe the hyperbolicity (exponential dichotomy) of the nonautonomuos equation. The present paper is devoted to semigroups of nonexpansive mappings on metric spaces of nonpositive curvature. We show that the Mosco convergence of a sequence of convex lsc functions implies convergence of the corresponding resolvents and convergence of the gradient flow semigroups. This extends the classical results of Attouch, Brezis and Pazy into spaces with no linear structure. The same method can be further used to show the convergence of semigroups on a sequence of spaces, which solves a problem of [Kuwae and Shioya, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 2008].
Let $M$ be a finite von Neumann algebra. In the first part, we give asymptotic results about $M$-stable sequences of weak*-continuous mappings which are related with operators belonging to $M$. In the second part, we extend, by a shorter way, similarity results given in [CaFa2] to unbounded semigroups of operators contained in a finite von Neumann algebra.
Let $S$ be a semitopological semigroup, and let $C$ be a nonempty closed convex subset of a reflexive Banach space. Under some amenability conditions on $S$, we provide existence results of fixed points for several Bregman nonexpansive type actions $S\times C\to C$, $(s,x)\mapsto T_s x$, of $S$ on $C$. The mappings $T_s$ we discuss include those being Bregman generalized hybrid, Bregman nonspreading, and Bregman left asymptotically nonexpansive.
In the present paper, several properties concerning generalized derivatives of multifunctions implicitly defined by set-valued inclusions are studied by techniques of variational analysis. Set-valued inclusions are problems formalizing the robust fulfilment of cone constraint systems, whose data are affected by a "crude knowledge" of uncertain elements, so they can not be casted in traditional generalized equations. The focus of this study in on the first-order behaviour of the solution mapping associated with a parameterized set-valued inclusion, starting with Lipschitzian properties and then…
We prove that a general version of the quantified Ingham-Karamata theorem for $C_0$-semigroups is sharp under mild conditions on the resolvent growth, thus generalising the results contained in a recent paper by the same authors. It follows in particular that the well-known Batty-Duyckaerts theorem is optimal even for bounded $C_0$-semigroups whose generator has subpolynomial resolvent growth. Our proof is based on an elegant application of the open mapping theorem, which we complement by a crucial technical lemma allowing us to strengthen our earlier results.
We provide a new and significantly shorter optimality proof of recent quantified Tauberian theorems, both in the setting of vector-valued functions and of $C_0$-semigroups, and in fact our results are also more general than those currently available in the literature. Our approach relies on a novel application of the open mapping theorem.
We consider Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators perturbed by a radial potential. Under weak assumptions we prove a spectral mapping theorem for the generated semigroup. The proof relies on a perturbative construction of the resolvent, based on angular separation, and the Gearhart-Prüß Theorem.
In this paper several joint spectra for a finite commuting family of closed operators in Banach space are considered, some new relations between these spectra established (earlier only the inclusion of the Taylor spectrum in the commutant one was known), and in the case of semigroup generators spectral mapping theorems for such spectra are proved. Several of this theorems are generalizations of preceding results due to the author. Applications to stability of multiparametric semigroups are given.
In this paper, we prove a mean ergodic theorem for nonexpansive mappings in Hadamard (nonpositive curvature metric) spaces, which extends the Baillon nonlinear ergodic theorem. The main result shows that the sequence given by the Karcher means of iterations of a nonexpansive mapping with a nonempty fixed point set converges weakly to a fixed point of the mapping. This result also remains true for a 1-parameter continuous semigroup of contractions.
The multidimensional functional calculus of semigroup generators, based on the class of Bernstein functions in several variables is developed, the spectral mapping theorems for joint spectra have been stated, the condition for holomorphy of semigroups, generated by operators which arises in the calculus is given, and the moment inequality for such operators is proved.
We discuss the multiple summability of a multilinear map $T:X_1\times\cdots\times X_m\to Y$ when we have informations on the summability of the maps it induces on each coordinate. Our methods have applications to inclusion theorems for multiple summing multilinear mappings and to the product of $p$-Sidon sets.
In this note, we answer a question raised by Johnson and Schechtman \cite{JS}, about the hypercontractive semigroup on $\{-1,1\}^{\NN}$. More generally, we prove the folllowing theorem. Let $1<p<2$. Let $(T(t))_{t>0}$ be a holomorphic semigroup on $L_p$ (relative to a probability space). Assume the following mild form of hypercontractivity: for some large enough number $s>0$, $T(s)$ is bounded from $L_p$ to $L_2$. Then for any $t>0$, $T(t)$ is in the norm closure in $B(L_p)$ (denoted by $\bar{Γ_2}$) of the subset (denoted by ${Γ_2}$) formed by the operators mapping $L_p$ to $L_2$ (a fortiori t…
It is shown that if $S$ is a commuting family of weak$^{\ast }$ continuous nonexpansive mappings acting on a weak$^{\ast }$ compact convex subset $C$ of the dual Banach space $E$, then the set of common fixed points of $S$ is a nonempty nonexpansive retract of $C$. This partially solves a long-standing open problem in metric fixed point theory in the case of commutative semigroups.
The paper is devoted to the implicit function theorem involving singular mappings. We also discuss the form of the tangent cone to the solution set of the generalized equations in singular case and give some examples of applications to nonlinear programming and complementarity problems.
This article summarises the theory of several bounded functional calculi for unbounded operators that have recently been discovered. The extend the Hille--Phillips calculus for (negative) generators $A$ of certain bounded $C_0$-semigroups, in particular for bounded semigroups on Hilbert spaces and bounded holomorphic semigroups on Banach spaces. They include functions outside the Hille-Phillips class, and they generally give sharper bounds for the norms of the resulting operators $f(A)$. The calculi are mostly based on appropriate reproducing formulas for the relevant classes of functions, and…
We obtain integral representations for the resolvent of $ψ(A)$, where $ψ$ is a holomorphic function mapping the right half-plane and the right half-axis into themselves, and $A$ is a sectorial operator on a Banach space. As a corollary, for a wide class of functions $ψ$, we show that the operator $-ψ(A)$ generates a sectorially bounded holomorphic $C_0$-semigroup on a Banach space whenever $-A$ does, and the sectorial angle of $A$ is preserved. When $ψ$ is a Bernstein function, this was recently proved by Gomilko and Tomilov, but the proof here is more direct. Moreover, we prove that such a pe…
